guarantee there'll be an ITV drama about the Quality St wrapper SCANDAL

kinder, Thursday, 11 January 2024 14:59 (four months ago) link

(aren't they meant to be more recycleable? i think all ours ended up in the same bin as always. who recycles 2" square bits of paper?)

koogs, Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:07 (four months ago) link

I'm sure Starmer's team's working on a response.

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:08 (four months ago) link

I think the wrappers are biodegradable rather than recyclable

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:22 (four months ago) link

https://www.qualitystreet.co.uk/sustainability

interesting bits:

"we are returning to our roots, introducing paper wrappers similar to those which appeared in the first selection in 1936!"

"Recycling works best when small pieces of packaging, like our Quality Street® wrappers, are bundled together:
i) Scrunch foil wraps into a fist sized ball with other foil.
ii) Scrunch new paper wrappers into a fist sized ball with other paper or put into a paper envelope."

turns out the previous cellulose wrappers (the outsides i guess) were compostable, the new paper ones are recycleable and the foil was always recycleable.

- What's your favourite Quality Street?
- Woke-o-nut Eclair!*

* actually no-one likes the Coconut Eclair, always a blue pile left at the bottom of the tin come Boxing Day

where did the times go (Matt #2), Thursday, 11 January 2024 16:35 (four months ago) link

i like it, you should send them all to me

mark s, Thursday, 11 January 2024 16:37 (four months ago) link

^^^ proper recycling

craning to be leather (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 January 2024 16:39 (four months ago) link

When I was growing up, no-one else would touch the blue ones, which was great because I'd eat them. Then the dregs of the tin would be the toffee sticks and pennies, which was great because I'd eat them. Although in days of yore when we were flush enough to have two tins over the holidays, there'd be an awkward day or two stand off because my father would refuse to open the second tin before the first one was empty.

I do wonder whether the quality of the chocolate has significantly decreased or if it's just that I've now spoiled my palate with non-shit chocolate and there's no going back.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:07 (four months ago) link

Quality Street have always been fairly rubbish imo

craning to be leather (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:09 (four months ago) link

the roses recipe changed from last year to this, and the tubs are 50g lighter (and cost 10% more)

koogs, Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:09 (four months ago) link

(qs tubs still 600g)

koogs, Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:09 (four months ago) link

Quality Street seems the same as it's always been? Roses definitely a half-step above Sainsbury's own brand chocolates. They even look similar and I wouldn't be surprised if they were made in the same factory. #oldfart

Roses are way better than QS, good opportunity for a confusingly limited interest poll

craning to be leather (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:13 (four months ago) link

the other thing i learnt over Christmas:

QS 11 flavours
Roses just 9

Someone gave me Celebrations and I made it easier on myself by removing all the mini Bounty bars and chucking them.

hazelnut cracknell is the worst ever quality stretch choc imo, glad it is on the dustbin of history

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 January 2024 20:20 (four months ago) link

xp I like those, but the cocanut is rougher and gets stuck in my teeth more than the full size bars.

xp I see your Quality Street Hazelnut Cracknell and raise you Roses Peanut Cracknell - was only in the selection for a couple of years but was like eating the glass from a broken test tube.

Difficult to choose between Heroes which has Crunchie Bits or Celebrations which has the Malteser Teasers.

Someone gave me Celebrations and I made it easier on myself by removing all the mini Bounty bars and chucking them.

Quite right, Bounty bars are vile.

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 January 2024 20:25 (four months ago) link

I absolutely hate desiccated coconut to the point I find it disgusting and struggle to swallow anything with a noticeable amount of it in which I'm pretty sure stems from puking after eating half a Bounty when I was 6. tbf I also remember puking after being forced to eat sausages at school when I was the same age and I still eat sausages. although that might explain why I was so surprised to read that people exist that actually like Richmond sausages, because they remind me of shitty school dinners sausages.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 11 January 2024 20:34 (four months ago) link

not sure why you're chucking them when you could be sending them to me, seems rude

mark s, Thursday, 11 January 2024 20:39 (four months ago) link

The greatest sporting moment of the last 10 years was when they installed cameras in the changing rooms of snooker players for some reason, and when they checked in on Shaun Murphy he was just sitting there eating Mini Cheddars pic.twitter.com/3V7dgCguGI

I wish the Celebrations Bounty were plain chocolate like the red wrappered full size bars.

they discontinued dark chocolate bounties last year, rip

i enjoy the occasional Celebrations-sized Bounty but i'd never buy a whole one

craning to be leather (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 11 January 2024 20:51 (four months ago) link

I have a theory that Bounty bars would be quite palatable if you melted them down, but haven't as yet put it to the test

exactly, only broken glass would stick in your teeth a bit less, just a vile product.
all cracknell is bad apart from sarah.

bounties probably the best celebrations tbh, I will go for the galaxy caramels first but they will make me feel a bit sick

I don’t really like the UK Milky Way bars because: filler but they’re less offensive than the coconut in Bounty bars.

I did not throw the Bounties away, but they were removed from the Celebrations box and put to one side.

Heroes Dinky Decker has the texture of dirt mixed with chocolate but I like them anyway.

I like Bounty - it's one of the ones I can confidently bite into with a high level of certainty that my caps and fillings will still be glued to my teeth when I've finished eating it.

Unlike the Crunchie bar I assume

toffee penny is the #1 dental extractor choc

Not eaten milk chocolate in about three years but I sometimes crave a Bounty.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 11 January 2024 21:24 (four months ago) link

Highland Toffee (replete with tartan packaging) trumps toffee penney for filling extraction.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 11 January 2024 21:25 (four months ago) link

I can handle Crunchie, but after a tooth shattering while biting into a pizza crust I'm still a bit shook. And there is a filling that is more like a reconstructed tooth - that even the dentist who'd just charged me fortune said try not to use it too much. And the hard toffees in quality street, well I daren't even look at them.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 11 January 2024 21:26 (four months ago) link

this made me look up what remains of proper old-fashioned fillings-nuisance chewy toffee (since toffos were discontinued in 2005) and i discovered something called oor wullie's braw chew bar
