the original mix of "hard day" was the b-side to the 12-inch versions of "i want your sex". the pettibone remix got released in its own right (on 12-inch only afaict) at around the same time as "faith" in the states, which brought it back to the dance/club chart and onto the r&b chart

"Hard Day" got R&B airplay in fall '87, exactly the background he wanted to build to earn a #1 song on the R&B chart in a few months.
