The Two Johns! (aka They Might Be Giants in their early years)

For the most part, Prince and the Revolution. Bobby Z was nominally the drummer, but it's 90% a Linn LM-1 on the records.

Do metal bands like Mysticum, Ildjarn or Summoning count?

Siegbran, Thursday, 21 March 2024 22:21 (one month ago) link

[x] was nominally the drummer, but it's 90% a [drum machine] on the records.

you specifically want drum machine so Hugo Largo who didn't have a drummer but did otherwise have rock instrumentation with electric violin wouldn't count or Sam Gopal who had an even more rock oriented instrumental line up with Lemmy on guitar and hand drums instead of a kit either.

Go-Betweens for about 3 albums
Only discovered recently that it's Simmons kit on George Best by The Wedding Present (albeit played live)

Young Gods? maybe they got a drummer later?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 23 March 2024 20:37 (one month ago) link

Young Gods always had a drummer, no? Certainly did the multiple times I saw them.

Yeah didn't they always have a drummer? Like that was the one conventional "rock" aspect of their lineup.

Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 23 March 2024 21:04 (one month ago) link

Checking their lineup and yes, it seems they have always had a drummer, I must have got mixed up with the keyboards as guitars thing they used to do.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 23 March 2024 21:16 (one month ago) link

i saw the Young Gods once.
i was behind a bunch of leathered up bikers who were all discussing the band re the bands rock noise.
the curtains opened revealing a drum kit and a keyboard.
the looks on their faces was a bit of moment.
they clearly expected a Proper Rock Band.

Mecca normal?

Tetes Noires (early on), Plastics, and Social Climbers, but all of those stretch the definition of traditional rock band quite a bit.
