maria did really well. the guy who told her should could sell stuff for more didn't sell anything and was amazed when she started stacking up empty crates. some dealer came up at the very end and asked if he could get two records for $7 instead of $10 and she said: no, put one back. haha! that's my gal!

xp I don't understand this custom (which I have also witnessed). Is the idea that the vulture dealers are going straight back to their own tables to mark up those very same records for sale that day? What kind of profit could they actually gain from this? A few bucks? If they sell? Maybe I'm dumb.

Woops meant to just express my lols at your story Scott.
"Is the idea that the vulture dealers are going straight back to their own tables to mark up those very same records"
nah, they'll mark them up for the next show. these guys don't always find good stuff on their own. they rely on shows to find cheap stuff.
― scott seward, Sunday, 14 April 2024 23:15 (three weeks ago) link
oh god and heaven forbid some normal citizen decides to sell at a show and prices everything really low. its like locusts. all of a sudden the poor guy is just standing there with empty boxes and no clothes on.
― scott seward, Sunday, 14 April 2024 23:16 (three weeks ago) link
seen that too

i have a friend who goes to shows to stock his store and i honestly don't know how he does it. he buys good stuff! at high prices. but his bins look nice and shiny for a week. it works for him somehow. he bought a ton of my stuff today. but during the show. like a person. i don't begrudge that. i buy lots of store stuff during shows. i mostly look for cheap funk and soul because i don't get a lot of it where i am. and nobody wants the cheap stuff like that at shows. so, it works out for everyone.
― scott seward, Sunday, 14 April 2024 23:20 (three weeks ago) link
i don't mind sellers taking a look at my records before the show opens. you get there so early, it's one of the perks. if somebody is hoovering up records to resell, though, it's a different thing.
― budo jeru, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:17 (three weeks ago) link
i just mean if one of my friends comes over and wants something, it's like -- yeah. you can buy it. i'm not going to make you wait until 9am sharp.
― budo jeru, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:18 (three weeks ago) link
the problem for me is that if I reveal them at all, the human vacuum cleaners swarm the table instantly
I literally have to keep them covered with sheets
― I painted my teeth (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 April 2024 16:29 (three weeks ago) link
and I don't even really care that they might resell them, I just don't like dealers cleaning out my bins before regular people get a chance to dig

especially this year when I am pricing to sell sell sell
I just bought a used four-CD box set released by Charly Records in the UK through Discogs. It's easy to find in the UK and EU and it's a budget item - not expensive at all, especially for a multi-disc set - but it was nice to be able to buy it in the U.S. rather than deal with expensive shipping charges or wait until my next trip to the UK (whenever that will be).
Problem is, after receiving it, I discovered it was missing its 48-page booklet, complete with session and liner notes plus photos. Huge bummer, but an honest mistake, the seller didn't think it was missing. He said he could give a partial refund, which I'd be okay with, but what's a fair price? The box set was $15 + tax plus an additional shipping charge of $6 via media mail. Should I ask for $5 or $6?
― birdistheword, Wednesday, 8 May 2024 23:31 (two days ago) link
just ask what would make you feel good as the buyer. you didn't slip up, so it's on the seller to accommodate you imo. the difference between 5 or 6 dollars isn't very big.
alternatively you could check the sales history and see if it's ever been sold sans booklet in the past

Yeah, going to check. Theres a number of red flags in the order. Has appeared on my orders timeline, but still want to check.

They're phishing you for personal or credit card info... it's likely that they either hacked that account or are simply using it as a Trojan horse by purchasing cheap items and then sending this message in conjunction with it.

that is a scam, I've had one, there are loads of them going round - just report it to Discogs support, they will cancel the order and ban the scam account, then you can relist the item

stuff like this is why I stopped selling on ebay and never sold on discogs. I just do IRL shows and a private FB group (btw somebody from here ilxmailed me abt that FB group, but I lost the email, if it was you please resend)

Has eBay seen an uptick in used vinyl traffic, given Discogs is in this state?
I would be using Discogs more if I had the patience to work out the postal quotes. That had to have chased off a lot of small-timers.
― maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 10 May 2024 18:02 (two hours ago) link
It definitely put me off for a long time, but back up and running now. I need to get rid of so much stuff
― Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2024 18:07 (two hours ago) link
I'm more just trying to keep up a one-in/one-out kind of thing. I would not be able to get a record fair table even. I'll see if I can sort through the rates again one day soon. Canada Post just did some increases so that should be good for a few months....

All cancelled now. Been selling for a dozen years and first time this has happened. Suspect I won’t have to wait so long for next attempt.
