so when some of these choices start showing up in popular hip hop songs a year or two from now, what'll you do?

think timbaland beat you to the ann peebles.
so much good music on this thread. love the Jacqueline Taieb, and yeah that psychfurs would go, sounds like newscast intro sting, real dramatic...

Timbaland sampled that same Ann Peebles song!? When?

Moka, Sunday, 23 August 2009 00:59 (fourteen years ago) link

pretty sure.
isn't there a track on "so addictive"?

don't know if u guys are joking about Timbo I am down this rabbithole so long. If not then The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) is maybe the greatest single and video ever imo so youtube is worth it in this instance, but you know, maybe yall are being super ironic I CAN'T TELL ANYMORE!

A quick google search tells he used it for Missy's 'Supa Dupa Fly'. Honestly had no idea it had been used, first time I hear the song. Really nice use of the sample, something a tad similar to what I had in mind :P

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_5GXwbzuy0

We should erase the whole thread before Timbaland finds it.

I've been playing around with Alan Parsons Project's "Games People Play" (just the part after it kicks in, but before it goes to the verse), slowing it down to about 75%. If I could throw a beat on top of what's there, it would sound pretty sweet.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 August 2009 03:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I've done the same, slightly slowed down the beat of Michael Sembello's "Maniac". I actually have a finished track now... that doesn't sound all that different from "Maniac". :/

Good question. Random list:

  • Al Green, Belle
  • Art Pepper, Tin Tin Deo
  • Bee Gees, Spirits Having Flown
  • Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby (Take 2)
  • Blind Willie Johnson, Dark Was The Night/Cold Was The Ground
  • The Chantells, Children of Jah
  • Duke Ellington, Acht O’Clock Rock
  • Johnny Clarke, In The Roots of the Ghetto
  • Journey, Girl Can’t Help It
  • Low, Silver Rider (the wordless chorus)
  • Neil Young, See The Sky About To Rain (the bluesy guitar line)
  • Planet P Project, Why Me?
  • The Psychedelic Furs, Pretty In Pink (the Talk Talk Talk version)
  • Prince Alla, Stone
  • R.E.M., Laughing (the jangle-y guitar line or a snippet of the baseline)
  • Rachid Taha, Rani
  • Sammy Johns, Chevy Van (hard to make this one “cool,” I suppose)
  • Steely Dan, Hey 19
  • Sugar Minott, So Much Trouble (the vocal chorus or snake-y synth line)
  • Sylford Walker, Deuteronomy
  • Raul Seixas, Metamorfose Ambulante
  • The Boris Gardiner Happening, Ghetto Funk
  • Sweet, Fox On The Run
  • Universals, New Generation
  • George McRae, I Get Lifted (this has probably been sampled 1000 times already)
  • Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maestros, Dododo (Ekassa No. 1) (the rising organ in the chorus)
  • The Professionals, A Part Of Being With You
  • WEB, The Same Old Me
  • Harmonettes, Shame Shame Shame (cover version)
  • Olivia Newton-John, Magic
The foregoing list serves only to prove how crappy a producer I’d be, but there it is.

fuuuuuuuuuck!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not being replayed, it's a sample lifted from 'Quero Sambal Meu Bem' from Tom Ze as well. He uses the same riff in both songs.

That's it. I'm dropping off of university to pursue my dream of becoming a producer.

I don't know how there isn't a 20-minute cosmic beats+echo edit of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" out there. (Maybe there is, but I haven't found it yet.)

Once I thought I was really clever and sampled the drum intro to Amon Duul II's "Archangels Thunderbird" and sped it up to a dnb-ish tempo and it sounded really familiar. Has this break already done the rounds or does it just sound like a bunch of others?

"the brief transcendent moments of a hundred mediocre indie songs"

the brief part of the intro to "like a fool" by Superchunk, where the main riff drops out and there's an angelic guitar strumming chords right before *BOOM*, the song drops. That little angelic bit is something I'd like to use. There's a track on the new Low album that reminds me of it--track 6 or 7, with a straightforward guitar riff, two chords strummed, kinda bittersweet.

Here’s several intros I’ve been looping which would make a great sample imho - they’re also great songs:

Melodies:
Omara Portuondo - noche cubana
https://youtu.be/frgbtk8mOhM

John Frusciante - outside space
https://youtu.be/nX4q6r0-TWQ

Montero - BC
https://youtu.be/XzI4EcFFBtY

Beats (this have been sampled already I guess)

Trevor Dandy - is there any love

Bernard Estardy - cha tatch ka

Barbatuques - baiao destemperado
https://youtu.be/zZfN3YaSRNQ

Joe Farrel - upon this rock

This one seems ripe to be a deep house song, surprised this hasn’t been taken yet (that I’m aware of):

I didn't either bc till now I hadn't watched the show beyond the first three seasons, which lack that intro. It's weird how the intro is all minor and synthy and then the main part of the theme comes in all major and jaunty, with a melody - as I saw someone online point out - quite a bit similar to a 1908 composition called "The Yama Yama Man."
