Yeah, he plays bass. I think he just likes hanging out.

And Phil likes having him around for the redneck cred. Kinda like Kid Rock and Hank Jr. It's like wearing the ultimate trucker hat.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 August 2004 13:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Superjoint's Ozzfest set was the fucking worst. 40 percent music, 60 percent Phil bullshitting while the band let their guitars feed back and waited around for him to finish so they could play another 90-second song.

Does anyone have a copy of the Kerrang! article where Phil goes on about how he has mates in white power etc? I can't seem to find it online, but I do remember reading it in the actual magazine some years ago(maybe 8 or 9?) Kerrang got so many angry letters they stopped covering the band for a while and Phil Anselmo refused to speak to Kerrang either.
Funny thing about the interview: It was Anselmo's 1st kerrang interview in a year or 2 because he refused to speak with them after they published photos of him and pantera all glammed up, after he said they were only a glam/big hair band before he joined.
Pantera Big Hair Photos Here..

Anselmo's always been a big dumbass.

100% correct there.

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't imagine editing an Anselmo interview. Have you ever heard him talk? Every other word he says is "fucking," it's hilarious.

Before editing:
I mean fucking, yeah, fucking we are a country, we are fucking people who are allowed a fucking opinion. 9/11 fucking was a horrific thing, fucking definitely the lowest point in fucking American history, as far as us fucking taking one on the chops. Fucking I cannot help but be fucking sympathetic to families who fucking lost fucking people in that fucking tragedy, fucking on the planes and fucking in the buildings.

Theres a Pantera video where basically Phil Anselmo and Dimebag Darrell just swear every word. It's hard to say who is the thickest...but i've never heard Darrell say any racist shit so...

"I mean, sure, he wore a shirt to an eMpTyVee interview which sported the insignia of a foreign neo-nazi group. He didn't seem to mind letting rumors float around for a while to bring the band notice.

I honestly believe he's not a skinhead, but he excels at being a fake."

"Fuck Superjoint Ritual. Fuck Phil Anselmo. Fuck Pantera. Mid-set, Phil lifts his straight right arm Sieg Heil style, yells “you know what I can’t say’, and then mouths “White Power.” Superjoint finished their set with my ass in my seat and my middle finger raised in the air. If you any tolerate this skinhead nonsense, fuck you too."

Paulo J, Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, he's always been kinda stupid. In interviews, he comes across as a highly uneducated, mush-mouthed Matt Dillon-in-the-Outsiders type of guy. I read something once where he said he can't be racist because all of his heros are black boxers. (!?!?!) I'd go as far as to say he's an embarrassmnet to the metal community, but...

This is my favorite part: "Fuck them! I mean, if you know the facts about the al Qaeda, they come across like a bunch of paranoid homosexual fucking Arabs, whatever the hell they are."

Almost Onion-worthy, that quote.

That said, I'm really sensitive to the ILX witch-hunting when it comes to 'racism' around here. No one bats an eye when Bobby Gillespie talks all his retarded communist shit. Shit, even famous hooker-torturer Rick James gets a lot of unconditional love around here. Basically, how does Phil Anselmo being racist affect any of you at all? Who cares? I think Superjoint Ritual are a pretty great band, fwiw, and so is Down, and so was Pantera, in their prime. I doubt many of you would have agreed much with Miles Davis's politics, either. And what about all the Krishna-conscious jazz cats, and the Farrakhaun-quoting Muslim rappers we all love and adore?

Let's not be so quick to tar and feather, boys and girls. Righteousness is in the eye of the beholder.

I think that Viking Crown record, Banished Rhythmic Hate, is the only thing I actually own by him. It's a hoot!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Bobby Gillespie's "retarded communist shit" might be badly thought out, but is at least on the side of Humanity. Not that a buffoon like Anselmo is worth taking seriously either, but the positions are hardly equal.

flatword jigga what jigga who? (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, man, if anything, Gillespie's ideas are way more 'dangerous' as far as I'm concerned.

(and yeah, he's a dumbass. It's part of his charm.)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Bobby G has never idolised or even mentioned Stalin.
His father was a trade unionist and those views of Gillespie's are very common in the Glasgow "red clydesiders" area. None of them espoused stalinism...

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure exactly how much Bobby has sided with Stalin. Surely not as much as Robert Wyatt, who I've never seen picked up on it.

I was just saying that Communism can be advocated much more comfortably by humanists than Fascism, since the former doesn't involve hatred of necessity.

I'm pretty sure Gillespie embraces the utopian ideal of communism, which means he just doesn't think out his ideas. He's an E'd up goof but harmless. Anselmo sounds like an asshole. Considering the current climate I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Anselmo is probably speaking for the dumber end of his fan-base, rather than influencing the ones that can read.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Anselmo seems to exemplify the typical confused, contradictory, incoherent stance on race and politics that a lot of rednecks have.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i wouldn't worry about that. He does weild a lot of influence, but any Anselmo fans who get into White Power shit because of him were probably predisposed to asshattery anyway

That said, I'm really sensitive to the ILX witch-hunting when it comes to 'racism' around here.

I've always thought that witch-hunting is a term best used when talking about ppl accusing and condemning others for stuff that they haven't actually done/views they don't actually have, as opposed to accusing and condemning ppl based on actions that they have taken and views that they have endorsed.

But which one resonates with more evil in our current political climate? Which ideology is more dangerous right now? Communism or plain old American bigotry?

One of my editors interviewed him when Ozzfest hit Ohio; he said there was a roadie sitting next to Anselmo for the whole interview whose job seemed to be to literally kick Phil awake when he nodded off. So he may well be back on the smack.

A Lethal Dose Of American Hatred is a very good album. So's Ted Nugent's Craveman. I listen to both all the time. And when I saw Nugent at Irving Plaza in January 2001, I wished he'd shut the fuck up between songs, too.

Look, as much as I love Pantera's second album, Phil Anselmo -- and his former bandmates would invariably agree with me -- is, was, and always will be an utter fucking moron. To stick a microhphone in his gob and ask him to sound off on current events confirms as much.

Hahahaha.

"To every person who is anti-war, I have to point out the importance of us definitely showing a very, very strong front, not looking vulnerable,"

By saying this, Phil accidentally makes a case against his own side of the coin. He backhandedly implies here that the war is for reasons of maintaining an image and Rambo-esque chest beating to keep the rest of the world in its place in case they decide to try anything, rather than for actual reasons of necessity :)

two weeks pass...
Blabbermouth reports: Cleveland, Ohio's "The Metal Show"
(TheMetalShow.com), which airs on 92.3 FM WXTM (Xtreme Radio), recently asked former
PANTERA and current SUPERJOINT RITUAL frontman Philip Anselmo to record
a message for the troops overseas. A transcript of the audio message
follows: "You guys, overseas... My Lord, this is Philip H. Anselmo from
SUPERJOINT RITUAL. And I do nothing - nothing - as of late but write
about our situations in a military light, in a political light. We are
backed into a corner, and the reason I say 'we' is because there's a lot
of people out there that want to protest the war, and this and that,
what-not… Look, the Middle East has been a pile of shit for over… seven
decades? I don't know, I have no idea [maybe] it's longer than that. I
guess all we're trying to do is show them… first of all, there is a way,
there is a way to make your country work. Secondly, if you don't catch
on to the way, we'll kick your ass some more. And as far as your !
terrorists and that [goes]. Only that, and pretty much that only, is
going to get even deeper and deeper into the Middle East, and WE - WILL
- KICK - YOUR - ASS. Deep into the Middle East. I suggest you take heed
- any of you - and if you are out there, and you're a plotter, and
you're with the al Qaeda, you are my enemy, and I dare you to face me one
on one - EVER! 'Cause I will fucking destroy you. Thank you."

Oh man, just listened to it. What a smacked out loser. Incidentally, his speech pattern/syntax, etc. is almost exactly that of the 13 year old Pantera fans who picked on me in junior high. Guess they could relate to his dumbassity.

If Phil ODs and dies anytime soon I won't shed any tears. He finished making whatever interesting music he was going to make over a decade ago.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 22:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's brilliant. I love how it's supposed to be message of support to the troops, but he ends up inadvertantly accusing them all of being Al Qaeda collaborators. Good old Phil.

Independent Mosow-based verification of US going deeper and deeper into the Middle East to KICK - AN - ASS:

"Iraq and Afghanistan are only the first moves of the U.S. offensive in the "big Middle East" from Morocco to China, while Russia and its rusting military are left to sulk on the sidelines."
— Pavel Felgenhauer, an independent Moscow-based defense analyst

Ha ha. Anyway, I'd like to add that Anselmo did already OD and die circa 1995, when Pantera made the mistake of letting him hire EYEHATEGOD as opening act. He was revived, EHG were immediately kicked off the tour, and the Cobain/Morrison/Shakur matyrdom trinity was preserved.

I think really where the use of the rebel flag or Confederate flag with us really came from was from our love of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and whatnot — shit like that, you know. There was never a time when it was okay to promote hate without a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek. It was never this blatant thing, unless I was completely out of my mind, which I was at points in time. I’ll own that for damn sure, but that was a long ass-time ago.

I’m coming up on 47 years old, and I think that if it’s upsetting enough to people in general — this is tough to say without taking any side — I can see where if people see it as a symbol of hate these days. I wouldn’t want anything to fucking do with it. I wouldn’t want much to fucking do with it at all. You see a Confederate flag out there that says “Heritage, not hate.” I’m not so sure I’m buying into that, you know?…

In hindsight, you know what, I would have not used it.
