I once got the four CD set of Blorp Essette in a three dollar bin! This was in San Diego!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

jack made me a 2cdr comp a couple years ago of this stuff that is awesome.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Dude, Skot, you need the box!! You will need it to write Noize Annoys.

But yeah, I immediately thought of JC. He da LAFMS man.

i got blorp esette for $2! and i sold it on ebay for $30!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I have the Darker Scratcher LP and a 2-LP album from either the Doo Doo Ettes or Le Forte Four (maybe a split?) that I don't have much remembrance of. DS is very good, it's like their stab at commerciality (or as commercial as a record can be with a Non cut on it).

LAFMS had a "float" in the Pasadena Doo Dah parade about 25 years ago that consisted of some metal poles forming a big cube over which they had stretched black plastic. They walked inside the cube, playing some instruments (horns, maybe a drum and guitar).

Wait, did Jack Cole ever see this? (Or Elvis Telecom for that matter.) I picked up one of those Decayes CDs a few months back at Poo-Bah...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 07:15 (seventeen years ago) link

never saw it. Poo-Bah just reissued Dennis Duck's "Dennis Does Disco" which is freaking great turntable manipulation. A classic brought back. How was the Decayes, ned? i've been tempted since Duck plays on that.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 08:39 (seventeen years ago) link

The Airway alb has just been reished on CD:

How was the Decayes, ned?

I liked it well enough on first listen though I should go back! I've finally been digging into all the LAFMS a bit after knowing about 'em for years and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

scott, email me offlist if you are still looking to trade for some of this stuff. I don't have much to add right now except that I wish the box had included more of the actual releases instead of two whole discs of Recchion and Potter's home recordings.

I'd probably write a bit more but I'm off to work.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow - just out:

*Artist: DUCK, DENNIS
Title: Dennis Duck Goes Disco
Format: Double LP
Label: Poobah
Country: USA
Price: $24.00
"A first-time widely available issue of this 1977 cassette-only release
from LAFMS member and SMEGMA cofounder DENNIS DUCK, and an early
example of turntable manipulation. Dennis Duck Goes Disco was made
entirely with a phonograph and records, utilizing skipping and pitch
changes for most of the effects. Originally released in an edition of
20 copies. Packaged with artwork by TOM RECCHION-vinyl in a gatefold
sleeve." - Poobah. "DDGD is probably the LAFMS release I listened to
the most."-Ace Farren Ford.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Good timing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:24 (seventeen years ago) link

On CD, too.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 February 2007 03:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Yr cracked -- the Recchion and Potts discs in the LAFMS box are great and lots of whole recording are included like the Airway that Harbinger has reissued.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Friday, 9 February 2007 07:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I know thise discs are pretty great (Recchion is esp. amazing, I love his solo disc Chaotica), I just think it was a typically perverse example of RRRon's compiling. And to leave out the Le Forte Four album is just tragic. I seem to recall plans for a second box but it seems obvious that the Cortical folks aren't going to put it out. What I'm saying is that I would rather have had more complete documentation of the actual lifetime-of-LAFMS releases in the box, and separate releases for those two discs.

Some of those omissions were rectified by the LP+7" series but not enough for me.

btw, any news on Gary Todd?

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 9 February 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

that said, the box is still one of the best investments out there.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 1 March 2007 06:00 (seventeen years ago) link

the new airway live thing, that isn't the same as the cd+7" that was released a while back, is it?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 1 March 2007 06:38 (seventeen years ago) link

err... "new reissue of the live airway thing." the harbinger one. hi.

I have a few Recchion cassettes down in storage that got a ton of my eartime in the 80s. I really should dig those out.

Second of the PooBah LAFMS reissues is out--Acnode One.
One LP is the first Dr. Id tape (+ guests) and the second LP is the first Ju Sukreet Meet tape (+ guests). Awesome stuff. Free playing, tape loops, junk noises, sound collage, tinkling bells, weirdo moaning. Awesome awesome stuff. I like it more than the Dennis Duck set, I think, by virtue of its diversity. Also, both LPs have outtakes from the sessions that were not originally issued on the tapes. Get it get it get it.

This stuff is circa 76/77 I believe.

tell me more about Dennis Duck. i have heard good things and have been looking out for that release of 10 months ago.

sanskrit, Sunday, 9 December 2007 01:21 (sixteen years ago) link

We keep that Dennis Duck Goes Disco action in stock at almost all time, mike. It's a lot of loops and turntable manipulation. Whacked out, wrong speed, no anti-skate control.. needle just kinda sits in a groove for a while and shifts over whenever it feels like it. I enjoy it a lot.

ian, Sunday, 9 December 2007 01:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I've only heard the Dennis Duck track from the 10 CD box set. One o' Clock Jump, I think it's called. Really cool track, like a hyper-edited Chip 'n' Dale megamix. Is each track a different kind of experiment though? I'm guessing there's much more direct manipulation involved...

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Sunday, 9 December 2007 19:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Mr. Ellison is correct. Dennis Duck Does Disco is fantastic. Then again, seeing Smegma too many times live has retarded my ability to appreciate them as much as the straight up LAFMSers. Also, Mike Lastra's Northwest Passage doc kinda sucks, but then again, so did the Portland scene with a few exceptions.

Ah shit I was also dithering about going on Saturday. I can't really afford it, got Swans next week, Membranes/Wolfhounds the week after and Wire the week after that, so probably just as well.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 21 October 2010 10:59 (thirteen years ago) link

oh hey.... thanks for reminding me about Swans. hopefully that hasn't sold out too.

it's true. and the reissue 2xLP is available on the secondhand market for under ten dollars !

LAFMS is pretty spotty stuff. They've been very good at mythologizing themselves. Some of it's wondrously good.

although i'm far from hearing their entire recorded output, this is pretty much the impression i have, especially listening to the "blorp essette" 4xCD comp just now. some of it is really good, some of it is fine.

byron coley blurb upthread kinda makes me want to barf

kinda related, but this single from 82 by the band Stillife is amazing – great Can rip a-side (Rubrica)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsOtHTpbeP8

and a great Glass/Reich-lite piece on the b-side (sounds eerily like Keith Fullerton Whitman circa Multiples)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veryZdGhfec

Tom Recchion and Dennis Duck play on it
