cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:21 (twenty years ago) link

gygax! dude speaking of which LCD Soundsystem and Casiotone here in NYC October 9th - are you going to make it out for it?

hstencil, Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

as of right now, probably not. things can change though.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

dang, man. I'm not the only NYer who would like to see you there.

hstencil, Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

well yeah, his season will be over, maybe he'll invite you up to his place near Irving Plaza.

hstencil, Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

I mean, the Mets were over by May, but technically yeah this is the last week of the season.

hstencil, Thursday, 25 September 2003 18:47 (twenty years ago) link

I got my Rapture cd (Echos) in the mail on Monday from Amazon.co.uk along with the new Luomo.

I expected to like the Luomo more, but the Rapture cd is awesome. Sorry to be a typical hipster but it actually rocks funks and stops starts in a great way. The chilled out songs are good too.

For some reason the one that sticks in my head the most other than Jelous Lovers is the 2nd track.

Awesome.

DFA Compilation #1>>>>>>>Echoes

gygax!, come east!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:44 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone heard the DFA's mix of Chromeo? It's cool.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 26 September 2003 08:28 (twenty years ago) link

Awesome! Fuck, see, this is why I still read this board.

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 09:00 (twenty years ago) link

i like the chromeo remix waaaay better than chromeo plain.

ps - gygax!,don't you think i look like a blockhead in that picture?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 26 September 2003 09:12 (twenty years ago) link

On a related topic... is there a compilation that has both LCD Soundsystem 'Losing My Edge' and !!! 'Me And Giuliani' on it? Anyone recommend similar?

Mog, Friday, 26 September 2003 09:16 (twenty years ago) link

I like Chromeo plain just as much (if not more). Veering b/w Cameo and Richard X - k cool.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 26 September 2003 09:24 (twenty years ago) link

On a related note of my own, I STILL can't find the Muzik mix CD.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 26 September 2003 09:30 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, the main reason this track is so cool is just cause it's something from Chromeo that's new to me. Some of the non-popular ones are the best. Like, I think "woman friend" is probably my favorite, and "Since you were gone"!! Are they ever going to, like, release anything on their own!?

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 09:33 (twenty years ago) link

Ugh, vocal tics creeping into your typing, c/d?

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 09:34 (twenty years ago) link

Wait, Chromeo aren't the same thing as the Martini Bros. are they!?

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 09:39 (twenty years ago) link

haha, disregard that, I knew that couldn't be right. Damn you glitchy turbo records website!!

DAn I., Friday, 26 September 2003 09:40 (twenty years ago) link

January 2004!!!

Dan I., Friday, 26 September 2003 09:44 (twenty years ago) link

lauren: no, you do not look like a blockhead in that picture! is that Andrew WK next to you?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 September 2003 15:28 (twenty years ago) link

Chromeo are quite good aren't they, thanks for the heads up

mentalist (mentalist), Saturday, 27 September 2003 08:11 (twenty years ago) link

Dammit! Why isn't Beat Connection included on the DFA CD compilation??

disgruntled, Sunday, 28 September 2003 06:22 (twenty years ago) link

one month passes...
The DFA are preparing a number of swank remixes this November, including mix-ups of Junior Senior's "Shake Your Coconuts" for Atlantic, a DFA-ified "In A State" for U.N.K.L.E. and Island/Def Jam UK, and a rearrangement of J.O.Y.'s "Sunplus" featuring Yoshimi from the Boredoms for Ape Sounds/Bathing Ape Japan.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 22 November 2003 21:27 (twenty years ago) link

mmmkay!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 22 November 2003 22:19 (twenty years ago) link

It says on their site they're in the studio with Liquid Liquid OMG!!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 22 November 2003 22:51 (twenty years ago) link

the junior senior remix sucks. the unkle one okay, the j.o.y. one amazing.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:04 (twenty years ago) link

what's going on w/them remixing Party of One, do you know? (I have personal reasons for asking this)

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:59 (twenty years ago) link

The Unkle mix is weird, I have my doubts that Murphy had anything whatsoever to do with it. It's quite epic in an old skool mo wax kind of way and at plus 2 or 3 it works for me.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 November 2003 13:59 (twenty years ago) link

i love the unkle mix - one of the best warm up records of the year imo. can't wait to hear the j.o.y. - is it out?

stirmonster, Sunday, 23 November 2003 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

i didn't hear a party of one remix.
every DFA remix of late has stripped off everything but vocals (j.o.y. has some of the bass).
LCD's "yeah" is SO ridiculous.

Beta (abeta), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:44 (twenty years ago) link

Ridiculously great?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

yeah what's the deal?

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

i looooove "yeah." but ridiculous is totally the right word. no wave by way of mo wax or something.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 23 November 2003 18:18 (twenty years ago) link

the junior senior remix sucks.

noooo! i was really looking forward to hearing that one :(

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:17 (twenty years ago) link

It says on their site they're in the studio with Liquid Liquid OMG!!!

I think my head just exploded.

Seriously, I saw them earlier this year at the DEMF and they were 100x better live than they were on their records. I cannot wait for this at all.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:46 (twenty years ago) link

they completely cut the chorus, geeta, which is the best part!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

okay, i want dfa productions (aside from "echoes") to convince a non-believer

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:39 (twenty years ago) link

I was doing a bit of research and apparently I was on the DFA's collective dick before I realized it -- "Blood Money", my favorite song from Primal Scream's XTRMNTR (what with it being an instrumental), had heavy input from Goldsworthy and Murphy. So my path to neo-disco-punk sycophant fanboyism quite possibly began with Bobby fucking Gillespie.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

Where the hell did you find out about that? That would have to be the DFA's first recording, like, ever!!

Where can I find a DFA complete discography?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

You are secretly Britpop, Nate. Hm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

allmusic.com, here. Apparently they met while working on a David Holmes album.

Don't go looking at me like that, Ned. (tho if it makes you feel any better my second-favorite track on XTRMNTR was that MBV Arkestra thing.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

dfa's first work was with brainiac, if i'm not mistaken. next was the turing machine record. correct me if i'm wrong, lauren.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

Brainiac!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

there's that evergreen record from 1996 that jmurphs produced (post-slint band with drummer britt walford) -- i am doubtful about the brainiac stuff, eli janney/steve albini had it on lockdown, save i think the one ep they did with kim deal. honestly, my head would explode if james murphy had anything to do with brainiac, that would be too much for me.

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago) link

I wouldn't consider James Murphy's production work in the 1990s to be DFA, really.

hstencil, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago) link

I have yet to hear a DFA record that DOESN'T remind me of Primal Scream. Or at least Death In Vegas. Yeah = laboured 90s indie dance par extraordinare.
