I thought most of the ones on the album were pretty zzz but it's been a while since I heard it. The stevie wonder tribute I like the most is the beat for Great Day. Also, my favorite color is blue.

is there any reason to recommend this "james pants" thing?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 04:58 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, the james pants lp is solid ... different but not too quirky, old school sounding yet fresh, plays with different genres yet flows really well ... a great record. his rhythm trax stuff is good too. it's basically him coming up with a follow-up to the original jive rhythm trax series.

The new electro-funk direction Stones Throw is taking is sounding good to my ears ... James Pants, Dam Funk, the Arabian Prince comp ... and hopefully more to come in that vein.

Romeo Jones, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm co-producing the next rhythm trax. yes!

Still waiting for this to happen, I dunno what the holdup is - biggest amount of press I've seen so far was in the Graun and was by, er, Stevie

I kind of like Yesterdays New Quintet. It's the kind of thing I never, ever put on but when it comes up on shuffle I always prick up my ears.

really enjoying mayer hawthorne.

and how good does their new psych comp "forge your own chains" look?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 15 October 2009 01:45 (fourteen years ago) link

the song "get your money right" by strong arm steady was a recent st podcast and is a really wonderful song. there was a dam-funk gospel funk podcast back in july, that was hot too.

"and how good does their new psych comp "forge your own chains" look?"

I ordered it last week. The DR Hooker, Top Drawer and Baby Grandmothers songs are ace, I bet the rest is even better.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 15 October 2009 07:53 (fourteen years ago) link

the two tracks I've heard from the new Strong Arm Steady are AWESOME. pretty excited for that record

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 12:49 (fourteen years ago) link

ha I see I said something a week ago about that. new one came in last night as a podcast. fuckin' awesome stuff imo

listening to the damfunk album now...very weird, it's got a lot of bleedthrough with 80s cassette fetishist types like James Ferraro imo but the sounds are clear not muddied - kinda love it, it seems really dense/rich in some way

oh yeah moonship journey if you haven't heard this I have a feeling it's up your alley

that matthew larkin cassell album is one of the most beautiful things EVER with a really great digging story behind it.

surprised they're getting into the minimal wave game. doesn't seem black enough for them

jaxon, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 17:19 (fourteen years ago) link

The minimal wave comp shall be dope. Stones Throw mantra has always been from what I have seen- "We put out what we like".

Tooth Far I (csa), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 19:06 (fourteen years ago) link

what is "minimal wave"?

IRL moderator (The Reverend), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 19:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess i meant more minimal synth. it's like minimal, obscure new wave. lots belgian acts. i guess Minimal Wave is a label putting out new and reissues of this kinda stuff.

this was released on minimal wave. so dope

looks great

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:51 (fourteen years ago) link

the new james pants is great. sounds like a mixture of ariel pink and john maus. also, he is channeling some strange religious vibe, i can tell he has been listening to a lot of the christian psych stuff ( dr hooker, azitis) and somehow mixing that with his usual electro/soul/post punk tendencies. its fucked up in a good way...i think the people who expect more of the last record the quirky hip/hop/party/electro stuff will def hate it... he's gone somewhere else with this one.

hope you're right about the Ethiopium, I wanted to like the Oxperiments album but it was pretty arduous. Couple good beats though. When a couple stonesthrow ppl + cut chemist opened for Mulatu this year, they were all fuckin great.
