I'm not sure how I feel about her britches anymore, but I sure listened to Sk8erBoi a lot while playing Elite Beat Agents.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I feel like this song and her new image are both so incredibly cynical, but the song is AMAZING so it doesn't matter.

The Brainwasher, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Check out the Mandarin version!

pinder, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:53 (seventeen years ago) link

the Veronica Mars resemblance in parts of the video is eerie.

milo z, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought this thread had been way longer. (There was a good long one where someone said that "take off all your preppy clothes" sounds like something from Silver Spoons and Kim said no, craptown Ontario is really like that. What thread was that?)

I'm not sure what I think of this song. My first impression was close to RS' but it might change/be changing.

Sundar, Saturday, 3 March 2007 03:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I've only heard this song once. That entire time, I kept veering between "omg kill me" and "WOW THIS IS AMAZINGLY CONSTRUCTED WOW".

eight months pass...

why did no one call this out for being "hey mickey"?

tissp, Thursday, 8 November 2007 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

('girlfriend', that is)

tissp, Thursday, 8 November 2007 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Because it sounds more like the Rubinoos?

jaymc, Thursday, 8 November 2007 18:28 (sixteen years ago) link

yikes.

it still sounds like hey mickey to me though.

Lavigne's Vancouver-based manager, Terry McBride, CEO of Nettwerk Music Group, claims the suit "has no basis. There's nothing similar (between the two songs)," he says. "Our musicologist says there is no similarities of melody, choral progression or meter."

haha "musicologist"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 31 January 2010 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Good question, my friend.

('girlfriend' WHAT THE HELL, that is)

― tissp, Thursday, November 8, 2007 6:25 PM (3 years ago) Bookmark

fixed.

Great song though! Better than "Born This Way", better than "Party crasher, panty snatcher," better than "Hold It Against Me," SURE AS FUCK a hell of a lot better than "Firework." Why is ILM not loving it?? You fools!!

any chance of "what the hell" hitting the ILM year-end list? that tune is huge.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:14 (twelve years ago) link

i don't really see the comparison to "since u been gone"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

it's not even the new "girlfriend"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

i like the follow-up "Smile" a lot too...kind of a shame that Avril's Max Martin singles are as good as almost anyone else's these days but she's totally getting lost in the crowd

drowning cool (some dude), Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:20 (twelve years ago) link

smile's the best

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 23 July 2011 09:20 (twelve years ago) link

not any more HUGE than like 17 other Max Martin songs tbh

drowning cool (some dude), Saturday, 23 July 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, female pop rock wise.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 17:48 (eleven years ago) link

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

uberweiss, Saturday, 10 August 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

that cover is great

johnny crunch, Saturday, 10 August 2013 17:03 (ten years ago) link

"Rock and Roll" is pretty great. It's not game-changing, but I think it stands among her better entries.

how's life, Saturday, 10 August 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

Sk8er Boi and Complicated are guilty pleasures of mine and I don't care who knows it

paolo, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

amy poehler's lurching, oddly simian impression of avril makes me crack up forever.

That video needs a poll thread. Tank Girl? Billy Zane? The math genius girl from The Wonder Years? November Rain? Shark vs. Bear? Copping another Taylor Swift single?
