i tried ted but they were video and i often can't watch if i'm walking around or something and felt cheated by only listening
I also listen to, with varying frequencies:this american life, sound opinions, on the media, to the best of our knowledge, in our time, speechification, nyrb, radio lab and npr story of the day.

Tehresa, there's a Ted channel on iTunes podcasts that has just audio without video.
― Squash weather (Eazy), Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh, wait, felt cheated by only listening
I like the audio more than the video in some ways, less distraction by how the folks look.
― Squash weather (Eazy), Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link
no i mean i felt cheated bc you needed to see what they were demonstrating to get it. if there's audio that doesn't depend on visuals, i'd be down. maybe that's not what you're talking about, though?
― tehresa, Saturday, 12 September 2009 18:03 (fourteen years ago) link
A few of the ones I've heard have been Powerpoint heavy, but most of those have a note on the track listing itself that it's mostly visual. I've listened to a bunch of them that work just as stand-along audio lectures.
― Squash weather (Eazy), Saturday, 12 September 2009 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link
(I love listening to those lectures while walking around town, especially this time of year.)

haven't checked out TED yet
On Point: Tom Ashbrook hosts the best call-in-show on the radio
i would have to say so. I like Larry Mantle in L.A. about as much but he hews more to local topics (and i listen on the radio, not podcast). other than that i can only make time for counterspin, addicted to race (amateurish but i like the topics sometimes) and left right & center (i know i know but it's entertaining). i listen to wait wait don't tell me/car talk on the radio when i can

oh and pick and choose sound of young america. i still subscribe to radiolab but it's so dense i find myself putting off listening, all that stimuli kind of weighs on my head when i'm trying to drive. subscribed to on the media too but not really impressed tbh

Mia Martina's podcast (also on iTunes) is first-person dirty memoir stories. What makes them interesting is that they can be dramatic and suspenseful, erotic but not necessarily about successfully getting off. If I were in Hollywood, I would buy the rights to 'em and turn them into a Showtime series.
Good luck with the TEDs! Some of the ones I've liked audio-only have been Martin Seligman (head of the APA) on positive psychology, Malcolm Gladwell, Felix Dennis, Stew, um...
― Squash weather (Eazy), Sunday, 13 September 2009 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link
Savage Love is great...a couple of weeks ago a crazy woman with a history of relationship failures called in trying to justify/get sympathy for her position of extreme jealousy (to the point of wanting to slash tires and/or faces) of her bf's exes, and Dan totally went wild, calling her out for being Ne Plus Ultra Psycho Bitch. Very entertaining.

Aerial View, a talk show, is back on wfmu.org as a podcast (the feed is pretty weird so shows will appear late, and twice with different titles) - every show begins with the same three-minute collage of audio bits from movies, though, which is awesome the first few times you hear it, then it seems really self-indulgent, so I skip past that these days.
I can't stand Diane Rehm's regular show, but the Friday 'news roundup' shows (drshow.org) are great, and it has its own feed, so you can blow off the rest of the week. The non-domestic hour, the second one, is great when they have the guy from Foreign Policy on.

When Marc Maron's WTF podcast is good, it is awesome.
Recommended episodes: Maria Bamford, Robin Williams, Patrice O'Neal, Carlos Mencia...
You have to like stand-up comedy though.

OMG i just discovered the 'Stuff You Should Know' podcast from howstuffworks.com. I think it comes out twice a week and they cover a whole range of things. so far I've listened to 'Prison: Not as fun as you'd think', 'What Makes a Serial Killer' and 'How Tourette Syndrome Works'. Makes the work day zoom by which is the whole point of podcasts iirc

there's a podcast called "containers" all about shipping containers but i'm not really sure it'll tell me more than the great bbc four doc i watched on the same subject a couple of years ago. still that sort of thing is "my jam."
there are some truly awful podcasts out there. the anna faris one. the guilty feminist. the outline world dispatch.

I was about to become the very last person in the world to check out "My Dad Wrote A Porno" but the 'about' page has just put me off it completely. It is the most off-putting 'about' page I have ever seen, it not only makes me hate this podcast I haven't heard, but also all other podcasts, all other media, and life in the 21st century in general.
