On Point: Tom Ashbrook hosts the best call-in-show on the radio

i would have to say so. I like Larry Mantle in L.A. about as much but he hews more to local topics (and i listen on the radio, not podcast). other than that i can only make time for counterspin, addicted to race (amateurish but i like the topics sometimes) and left right & center (i know i know but it's entertaining). i listen to wait wait don't tell me/car talk on the radio when i can

oh and pick and choose sound of young america. i still subscribe to radiolab but it's so dense i find myself putting off listening, all that stimuli kind of weighs on my head when i'm trying to drive. subscribed to on the media too but not really impressed tbh

A Life Well Wasted - "about video games and the people who love them". So so so awesome.

Anybody explore iTunes U? There's a lecture class from Yale about the political history of Ancient Greece that's just great.

Savage Love, TAL, Subgenius Hour of Slack. I subscribe to a few poker podcasts but have been deleting a lot of episodes lately without listening to them.

sub'd to ted talks audio today... we'll see how it goes!

tehresa, Sunday, 13 September 2009 17:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Mia Martina's podcast (also on iTunes) is first-person dirty memoir stories. What makes them interesting is that they can be dramatic and suspenseful, erotic but not necessarily about successfully getting off. If I were in Hollywood, I would buy the rights to 'em and turn them into a Showtime series.

Good luck with the TEDs! Some of the ones I've liked audio-only have been Martin Seligman (head of the APA) on positive psychology, Malcolm Gladwell, Felix Dennis, Stew, um...

Savage Love is great...a couple of weeks ago a crazy woman with a history of relationship failures called in trying to justify/get sympathy for her position of extreme jealousy (to the point of wanting to slash tires and/or faces) of her bf's exes, and Dan totally went wild, calling her out for being Ne Plus Ultra Psycho Bitch. Very entertaining.

Anyone know any good TV podcasts? I tried the Paul Goebel Show but found he rarely talks about TV and the sound sucks, to boot.

Aerial View, a talk show, is back on wfmu.org as a podcast (the feed is pretty weird so shows will appear late, and twice with different titles) - every show begins with the same three-minute collage of audio bits from movies, though, which is awesome the first few times you hear it, then it seems really self-indulgent, so I skip past that these days.

I can't stand Diane Rehm's regular show, but the Friday 'news roundup' shows (drshow.org) are great, and it has its own feed, so you can blow off the rest of the week. The non-domestic hour, the second one, is great when they have the guy from Foreign Policy on.

When Marc Maron's WTF podcast is good, it is awesome.

Recommended episodes: Maria Bamford, Robin Williams, Patrice O'Neal, Carlos Mencia...

You have to like stand-up comedy though.

OMG i just discovered the 'Stuff You Should Know' podcast from howstuffworks.com. I think it comes out twice a week and they cover a whole range of things. so far I've listened to 'Prison: Not as fun as you'd think', 'What Makes a Serial Killer' and 'How Tourette Syndrome Works'. Makes the work day zoom by which is the whole point of podcasts iirc

The Smartest Man in the World - Greg Proops is pretty cool.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

thanks-- I did listen to that one a few times and it pummeled me like Death Metal a bit. Like to try it again though.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

If you're interested in TV writing, the Nerdist Writers Panel is very good.

polyphonic, Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago) link

Sounds cool. I'm wondering if there are any BBC pods people could recommend too. I kind of remember a sort of random blog thing being talked about years ago on ILE, but can't remember the name of it. Also, I'm interested in arty sub-TAL stuff like Too Much Information, 99% Invisible and the Memory Palace.

President Keyes, Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:20 (twelve years ago) link

hah I know what you mean about Proops. I need to be in the right frame of mind to just drift along with him, there are times when his voice drills into my head and it makes me crazy.

have a few drinks, listen while you're cooking dinner or something. It's a bit more enjoyable that way, lol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:30 (twelve years ago) link

three years pass...

I'm suddenly interested in podcasts. Especially ones that aren't music, aren't two people just chatting and aren't panel shows. I'm interested in what can be done with the podcast format that can't be done in any other format. I like the idea of drama/fictional podcasts - horrors, comedies, dramas... I tried out 'Welcome to Night Vale' and found it a bit lacking, more like being read out a bunch of gags and horror tropes but with no continuity or discernible plot arc. I have yet to try out Serial and Limetown. As I say, until last week I had never bothered to listen to a podcast.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Monday, 22 February 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link

I'm not yet sold on the fictional podcast-- I agree about Nightvale. Limetown seemed promising but it felt too rushed, and a lot of the voice acting was stilted, same thing with The Message which I never made it through. There are a lot of good non-fiction shows, often on a loose topic, like 99% Invisible (design), You Must Remember This (old Hollywood), Criminal, Life of the Law, and The Allusionist (language).

I listen to a lot of history podcasts--there are dozens of them now, of varying quality, besides the famous ones (Dan Carlin & History of Rome)

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 22 February 2016 15:16 (eight years ago) link

You Must Remember This is pretty great. I haven't listened for a while though but it looks like they're covering HUAC and the blacklist now, which is a compelling enough topic to lure me back in.

how's life, Monday, 22 February 2016 15:31 (eight years ago) link

I mentioned the on the Comedy Podcasts thread, but will plug here too: Guys We Fucked. Basically ILTMI the podcast. I've been listening since last summer and in between new eps have gone back and binge-listened to the rest. It's not like it's a hidden gem of a podcast - it's doing really well on the itunes charts - but I haven't seen anyone else talk about it on ilx.

how's life, Monday, 22 February 2016 15:34 (eight years ago) link

Secret History of Hollywood is dope - like a longform You Must Remember This. They just started a new series about Warner & it's great
