calvin the show seems to be totally unaware that the romantic lead is a drip and that kenny's fixtion with her is lame, i.e. it sends no "signals" to this effect. therefore i did not figure it out. because the show depends on us taking kenny and april seriously as a possible item. like for instance, when kenny's in the bar talking to someone off-camera that it's time to take it to the next level and settle down the big punchline is that he's talking to the skank ho. haha wooo. my contention - and i fully realize this is "imagine the show i wish existed rather than the show as it is" territory - is that the show would have been 5000 times better if it turned out he was actually talking to april. she either says "kenny what in the fuck are you talkin about" or she says "i'm sorry were you talkin?" although like i said the show depends on us taking it seriously so we can't do that. i think it gets in the way of the interesting stuff - i.e. the stuff with gina gershon, i.e. the stuff at school (do we ever actually see kenny relating to any kids? doing his actual job? i'd a million times rather see that than another insipid romantic comedy rerun).

also relax dudes i wouldn't be talking about the show this much if it wasn't interesting in a few big ways.

mainly, the way in which it stars danny mcbride.

you seem to want kenny to make the right choices in life. he will never do that.

Ha ha. That came off dickhead-ier than I intended, but I really only meant to say what you seem to acknowledge yourself: that you kinda seem to miss the point of the show. Interesting ladies are probably likely to be in short supply on a show which is such a paean to loserdom.

isn't white lightnin' a horror movie? i haven't seen it, so can't really parse mark's piece. if we already know what the degadations etc. of white american working-class life *are*, as mark does, then im not entirely sure who it is we know too much about – whose aesthetic self-regard.

and im not sure to whom the 'aesthetic self-regard' bit refers w/r/t this series – "just an average guy, with exceptional hair", maybe.

who in eb&d do we already know too much about? what cultural space does its makers proposing it as a contrast to?
