Lovely Griezmann finish vs Rostov but Azmoun, who I think will definitely be playing somewhere other than Russia next season, equalised about a minute later.

ogmor, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 21:52 (seven years ago) link

I'm on the way back from the game and that was probably the worst Spurs performance I've ever watched in the flesh. It was fairly obvious from the team sheet that it was going to be a disjointed, unbalanced second string performance but fucking he'll.

Given the obvious deficiencies in wide areas, why the hell was Danny Rose on the bench?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 22:30 (seven years ago) link

It's hard to think of any moments of quality from anyone but the withdrawal of every creative player after the goal made me leave before the final whistle for the first time in my life.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 22:31 (seven years ago) link

you otm

the kids are alt right (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 November 2016 22:37 (seven years ago) link

have felt for a while that poch spurs are kind essentially a reactive side, with even the strikers effectively defending and stifling, closing down space and hoping to scuffle an opening from the opposition. against more expansive teams this can be v good, but otherwise there's not much creation of space, it's often very narrow, and there are not many runners. really feel like the team needs one or two decadent creative players with no defensive duties to lurk and provide sudden bursts of incision because everyone is a scrapper atm

ogmor, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 22:57 (seven years ago) link

...poch spurs are kind essentially a...

ogmor, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

yeah. total lack of incision or will to risk the ball.

except for son to ill effect and walker in his own fucking box.

the other trend noticeable without alderweireld is that we defend appallingly. the opposition need only have the ball for a fraction of the time and show nothing more than competence in order to destroy us.

poch out

the kids are alt right (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 November 2016 23:06 (seven years ago) link

really feel like the team needs one or two decadent creative players with no defensive duties to lurk and provide sudden bursts of incision because everyone is a scrapper atm

On paper the obvious candidates are Eriksen and Son. Son is completely ill-suited to the CF role - we briefly looked much more balanced when he switched to the left and Janssen came on. Previously there were so many moments when Alli would play a ball through that he failed to anticipate in the way that a proper CF would - unsurprisingly really as Son should be one of the people playing that ball rather than receiving it. Kane's movement off the ball is often excellent and compensates for his lack of pace.

Eriksen has been playing inside himself all season and has had fewer decisive moments than I've ever seen from him. Something's not right there.

We were right in front of Walker for most of the second half and it was really obvious how he would prefer to negotiate some kind of painfully awkward comedy turn with an attacker bearing down on him rather than just put the ball onto his left foot.

Sissoko is powerful but his decision-making is execrable. Consistently.

Dier is a much better DM than a CB and looks very nervous at this level, as does Vertonghen without Toby alongside him.

Pretty much the only new signing to have settled properly is Wanyama, who was also the only Spurs player to have a half-decent game yesterday. Maybe Lloris as well but Leverkusen didn't seem too bothered about scoring until it actually happened.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 November 2016 13:06 (seven years ago) link

Speaking as a Leverkusen supporter we more or less just lucked out (for once, given the last weeks) in eventually taking one of the many chances forced on us by Spurs regularly dropping the ball in a hair-rising situation. Nothing of interest in terms of offensive accomplishment coming from our side as well, but this is most probably just Roger Schmidt's ideal of a perfectly executed game.

Borussia Dortmund beat Legia Warsaw 8–4 in the group stage in 2016–17. This is the record for the Champions League era.

two maybe three decent performances since late April is the kind of thing that generated non-whimsical '[Spurs manager] out' talk back in the day, just sayin

The Codling Of The London Suede (Legal Warning Across The Atlantic) (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 23:20 (seven years ago) link

I didn't watch the game but the expanded squad options have really fucked us. Even without injuries Poch has been rotating into systems for which we are manifestly unsuited. Also I miss Toby. When is he coming back?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 23:45 (seven years ago) link

I've been pochouttino for months but let's be serious here he's earned a lot of goodwill and he's not near spent it all

identity politics rooted in tolkienism (darraghmac), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 00:17 (seven years ago) link

The Lamela injury hasn't exactly helped either - he's had some subpar performances this season but he's a sorely missed creative spark with Eriksen so out of sorts.

Guessing we'll deliberately tank the third Wembley game in order to try and avoid the Europa now. Hardly £150 well spent in any case. There's a lot to be said for reverting to last year's XI (give or take a Wanyama) as soon as we can.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 00:21 (seven years ago) link

Poch out is premature but starting a must-win game with Derby, Wimmer and Trippier at the back is straight up negligence. The whole CL campaign has been an embarrassment. It has been the holy grail for years and when achieved taken with the same seriousness as a Europa away leg vs Qarabag. It hasn't just been inept, it has been pathetic.

Bubba H.O.T.A.P.E (ShariVari), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 06:36 (seven years ago) link

Dier*

Bubba H.O.T.A.P.E (ShariVari), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 06:38 (seven years ago) link

I'm starting to wonder how bad his falling out with Vertonghen was, and whether something escalated ahead of the game. Vertonghen has been poor in the CL but that back line was a disaster even on paper. His selections haven't made much sense throughout the tournament and it has looked like he's been resting players for Premier League ties the following weekend.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 11:03 (seven years ago) link

Yep, that's the assumption the TV commentators were working on as well - Vertonghen and Walker were being rested for the Chelsea game at the weekend.

Bubba H.O.T.A.P.E (ShariVari), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 13:20 (seven years ago) link

Amazing early games - my boy Azmoun inspired Rostov to a 3-2 win over Bayern, Besiktas came back from 3-0 down at half time to draw.

SV, did Bayern just throw the game or? They sank us to fourth. Which is probably for the best, to be out of Europe entirely. Already cant wait for this dreadful season to be over for us tbh

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

(Not taking anything away from Rostov btw, they have been impressive against Ajax earlier, just a bit uneven at times)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

No, Bayern were on top for most of the game and Rostov scored with pretty much all of their shots on target. It's a bit of a fluke but Bayern were ok.

Bubba H.O.T.A.P.E (ShariVari), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

barca still had 57% possession, they just . . . never went anywhere

mookieproof, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 22:50 (seven years ago) link

Tackling tonight alone from PSG was of an incredible standard.

Betsy DeVos Ayes (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 22:51 (seven years ago) link

With D on this one, I though PSG were magnificent. And they kept at it! Even for PSG that takes some doing being 2-0 up. Every ball, every tackle was theirs, clinical finishing. Within their capablities it was a near perfect match for PSG.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 22:56 (seven years ago) link

PSG were great, i'm not diminishing that performance, but there are easily a minimum of 3 teams still in the competition that will not let them play like that.

Treesh-Hurt (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:23 (seven years ago) link

the headline story here is that old school Barca are done: Piqué, Busquets, Iniesta, Messi - even the relatively non-Alzheimer's Neymar & Suarez looked fucked

Treesh-Hurt (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link

Neymar was good. Pique was ok. The rest, eesh. Never thought I'd see messi play like that, iniesta missing passes from ten yards. Bizarre.

Betsy DeVos Ayes (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 23:49 (seven years ago) link

pandemic, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 10:17 (seven years ago) link

Rabiot was good, but Verratti was motm for me. What a game he played.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 10:23 (seven years ago) link

Yeah but I expect that from verratti.

pandemic, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 10:30 (seven years ago) link

That was magnificent. And even more considering most, if not all, parisians thought there was no way we could beat Barca (I expected us to get whipped to be frank), especially this season as we're weaker than last year...
All the team (except maybe Kurzawa) was fantastic. And what to say about Kimpembe who was last minute replacement to Silva and had never played a CL game in his life !?
Most of our players were around 20-25yo. A team of children against men !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 10:39 (seven years ago) link

Betsy DeVos Ayes (darraghmac), Wednesday, 15 February 2017 11:16 (seven years ago) link

Meunier imo. Seems like a sensible lad too:

"I’ve always said that one day, I would like to play in the Premier League. On the other side of the channel, there are the stadiums, the fans, and I’ve never hidden that I’m a big fan of Manchester United, which remains, in my eyes, the real reference in the world of football."

Number None, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 11:18 (seven years ago) link

I was so worried about Silva last minute's replacement, although Kimpembe has been great every game he's played this year, but wow, what a performance from him yesterday.
he single-handedly shut Messi and Suarez (I don't think I've noticed anything by Suarez, except his fail in the wall on Di Maria's freekick !)

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 11:41 (seven years ago) link

not sure what to go with tonight. haven't found bayern that enjoyable to watch this season but think it might be an okay game tonight. only real madrid game i've seen is their loss to dortmund. let's face it neither is likely to live up to last night's psg masterclass.

Feeling u man. Di Maria deserved a pen in the second half as well. Commiserations.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:48 (seven years ago) link

Barca played open enough that a confident PSG should've had them more than once on the break. No mystery, just mentality

snappy baritone (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:01 (seven years ago) link

No mystery indeed. PSG strangely terrified at the beginning of the game, like they had lost any confidence that they could play at Barca's level. The three goals in the last 8 minutes were in a way more typical of a team bottling it completely because of pure fear.

I like man city well enough but Monaco were beautiful to watch in that first half. Rio Ferdinand saying that an English team shouldn't concede a goal from a set piece against this sort of team was bizarre. What? A team taller and stronger than them?

Think I'll dream of an LFC team with either Mendy or Alex Sandro at left back.

pandemic, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 22:09 (seven years ago) link

goal didn't have anything to do with height or strength but

Dunphy completely lost the plot over it though. Start ranting about how Newcastle or Brighton would never have conceded like that. Also that Rafa would sort this City defence out

Well after that rather pregnant pause

I don't believe that ilf is a safe space or any of that shit but at the same time i think we've got a fairly nice vibe in here that allows for us to abuse lfc fans without the rage bleeding out into the rest of ile and for ppl to interact around football where they wouldn't normally be able to pass each other without hissing in a politics thread or etc

The above isn't even related in any way i can define but seriously that episode above is fuckin ridiculous. Ya this is ice cold but rings true. I have no idea what happened to Jansen other than that he's just not cut out for the pl? The gap between Eredivisie and PL is getting too big. See Depay, Jansen, Afonso Alves lol. The Dutchies who do get along (Wijnaldum best recent example) all had a stop at a lesser team before going to he big boys.

Dost, though: I'd take a gamble if I were Spurs. He was good at Wolfsburg, and is killing it in Portugal rn.

The Zlatan thing is pretty funny tbh ¯\_(ツ)_/ ¯

mourinho was so obviously knackered and ready for the beach, making it clear how much he's hated this season

Sanchez was impressive but he did literally push Lingard over when he broke through. I actually thought De Ligt looked the better defender

can't read his name without getting groove in is the heart stuck in my head

Heh. The BT commentator repeatedly pronounced his first name as Matísse, which I thought was a nice touch. De Ligt (17) is an amazing talent and I think he did well last night. Ajax were disappointingly rubbish. Playing both Traoré and Younes more or less set this up, as both excel in missing opportunities.

The Zlatan thing annoyed me, but not as much as BT dragging the terror attack into it. I'm sure those who lost a loved one will feel way better when they can see Mou lifting a fucking trophy in the city tomorrow.

Noodle Vague:
i was gonna watch it until i found out BT have taken their channel off Freeview

Really? Hasn't it just switched to 115 this season (in HD?). Does that mean you can't see it? Supposedly both this and CL final are on that Freeview HD channel. I saw the match in a pub in Fitzrovia; I never get home for more than the last 20min of a 7:45 k/o these days :/

Michael Jones, Thursday, 25 May 2017 10:30 (six years ago) link

This is driving me nuts, Sky keep saying Cardiff is not only the smallest city to host a Champions League final but that it is by far the smallest city to host a Champions League final - it was repeated three times in the report I just watched. The population of Cardiff is 341,000, the population of Gelsenkirchen is 260,368.

tear in my eye imagining how amazing that goal wouldve been without dour cunt bt sport commentary acting like mandz scuffed it and the keeper went with the wrong hand etc

Madrid are so fucking insufferable to watch. Every single decision against them and it's shenanigans. I would've sent off five of them already.
