Because still using the thread from two seasons ago displays a lack of respect to teams below the top flight

Perversely pleased to have had a euphoric draw followed by an unbelievably frustrating draw in the first two fan-attended games at the new plough lane.

Gillingham we’re fucking shit and had nothing of note about them beyond Steve Evans’ panto act on the touchline.

Ayoub Assal is the best player in the league btw and I’m excited to watch him all this season cos he definitely won’t be hanging about after that.

O'Brien played last night but this was clearly a move to force Leeds hand to stump up the cash and stop fucking about. He wasn't really there, not that he shit out of tackles but when his usual extraordinary energy level drops by a few percent he looks quite an ordinary player. He'll probably get found out fast in the prem I say with no bitterness. We just need two Sorba Thomas's now so he can get on the end of his own exquisite set-piece deliveries and average 2-3 goals a game.

I used to go to the Bees a bit in the underhill days, so I've watched their decline to the neglected works team of a Stanmore leisure centre with morbid interest. To pick up Kleanthous on just one point among many, the 'Heineken strike' (actually a strike affecting the delivery contractors) was only due to start today, and was in any case called off on friday, so was obviously not the reason the club was scrambling around to source cans of Fosters for the opening game of the season lol.

Most chances created in the Championship:

Sorba Thomas - 17
Ryan Giles - 15
John Swift - 12
Callum O’Hare - 11
Jeremie Bela - 11
Scott Malone - 11
Fabio Carvalho - 10

sigh if we had a striker who wasn't an injured Rhodes-to-nowhere or a 34 year old Frasier Campbell we'd be on fire. I think all our CBs are joint top-scorers now.

calzino, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 15:44 (two years ago) link

I think all our CBs are joint top-scorers now.

Same for Cardiff I believe, in fact I think Flint is top scorer in the league?

yeah he is! Although I think Mitrovic will probably get more by the end of season it's an impressive tally by this stage.

calzino, Friday, 27 August 2021 00:00 (two years ago) link

Just caught up on this week's Cup fixtures and you were pretty unlucky against Everton.

Long enough attention span for a Stephen Bissette blu-ray extra (aldo), Friday, 27 August 2021 06:59 (two years ago) link

yeah very unlucky in having a goal ruled out and Sinani missing a sitter and then Lees getting subbed for Turton was not a good idea, he looks out of his depth against championship sides never mind Everton. The defence has become more settled with the so far very impressive Nicholls in goal. Most people had very low expectations for a keeper who was let go by the MK Dongs and so did I tbh!

The fact that its such a shit noddy competition makes it even more annoying we haven't won it tbh

since you are a big fan of adult websites (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 27 August 2021 09:27 (two years ago) link

lol good old Noddy Sarr, man. He'll probably still easily score more than Rhodes with the kind of deliveries Sorbz puts in the box. He can do an absolute howler and then follow it up with a goal and a heroic perfectly timed game saving tackle in the space of 2 mins. But saying that if he didn't frequently make these mistakes he'd be at Barca!

calzino, Friday, 27 August 2021 10:58 (two years ago) link

my new hero Sorba Thomas ripping up teams every game. A goalkeeper where you don't have to look away every time the ball goes into the box. This is actually becoming entertaining to watch for the first time since 2017.

some very dodgy business going down at Reading. They are under a transfer embargo and Chelsea have loaned them Drinkwater and Rahman whose wages put together would almost equal their entire wage bill from last season. Apparently there are some links with the owners as well.

buzzing that we've got Mipo Odubeko on loan after watching some vids - that old classic. Apparently we bid £2m and were told not a chance. Some West Ham fans don't seem happy he has been farmed out as their only outright 9 is Antonio. He's only 18 but so is Colwill and he's improved our defence immeasurably and scored a last minute winner.

ikr, and away too! and with Luke Haines' (not that one) head injury! though tbh York seem to have plenty of their own issues to deal with, so maybe it's more "how did we lose at home to Hereford?"

edited to reflect developments which occurred (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 12:57 (two years ago) link

We beat York at their place last season too, when they were top of the league.

A missed penalty and then a miskick by their keeper seems to have been enough to sink them. Sounds like it was quite an open game, but only a couple of clear-cut chances each.

happy for Sorba to get his first full Welsh cap. But playing him as a fullback and not letting him near the set-pieces and especially when Wilson/James were wasting them all is a criminal waste of his talent.

Much as my own trip to Lincoln last weekend was class - what a brilliant place, performance/result notwithstanding

imago, Tuesday, 19 October 2021 14:30 (two years ago) link

I had a very fun day in Lincoln for L2 playoffs first leg fixture. We won 2-1 and the own goal winner was credited to the barely perceptible touch of Iffy Onuora. Had a delicious vegetarian sausage sandwich at a cafe and drinks at a hotel bar that was owned by a Sikh family and they were excellent hosts. And then we got to laugh at some bitter L66ds fans on the train back who were returning from a 4-0 thrashing at Stamford Bridge and had just been relegated from the prem. I miss going on those happy drunken away trips.

very surprisingly straightforward and comfortable 1-0 win for injury ravaged Town today. I think the way Valerien's management style was very good and effective at Barnsley and made them extremely hard to beat last season - it will conversely fall well short of what is needed at the Baggies this season. some incredible reffing from Jeremy Simpson today. Lees is knocked unconscious by an elbow smash and Mr Magoo sees something different and plays advantage Blackpool, repeatedly looking back at the unconscious + unresponsive player on the deck. Then he books Toffolo for politely informing him of his appalling mistake. Justice was served to the donkey lashers in the end though.

it seems Derby are deep in the shit and their inability to find a new owner is further complicated by Steve Gibson still going for £45m compensation for them depriving the Prem of everyone's fave away trip by cheating P+S rules and finishing ahead of them in a playoff spot. Oh yeah and Wycombe were tragically relegated to L1 because of their FFP breaking shenanigans as well.. lol!

There was that time in the prem when West Ham coughed up £20m to the relegated Blades over the Tevez business. But Middlesbrough's claim seems pretty dodgy to me. And as for Wycombe, when you get into the playoffs via the duckworth lewis method then don't complain when shit happens.

Tino Anjorin is joining us on rest of season loan from Chelsea, we've had a lot of good use from their best youth players in recent times. If he's anywhere near as good as Levi Colwell has been this season then it's a bit of a coup for us. Especially as Southampton were also in for him.

calzino, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 00:16 (two years ago) link

I am pleased to see we have loaned some lad from Huddersfield to replace the guy we loaned from Barrow (he got injured after 1.25 matches, scored once) to replace our main striker who got injured. Maybe they'll all be back and scoring for fun come the end of the season.

Statistically speaking, though, this chap from Huddersfield is due a nasty injury some time in the next three games.

Phillips suffered a 2 year layoff due to a degenerative knee issue which had him bed-ridden for 3 months. The club just tied him down to his first long-term contract so they obviously rate him. The Walsall loan showed he's over his injuries and up to the rigour of regular football and 5 goals isn't a bad return when they were deploying on either side rather than as a CF.

calzino, Saturday, 12 February 2022 20:50 (two years ago) link

It was a fun game, bit nervy at the end mind. I think I counted six separate songs piling abuse onto puffa-coated panto villain. Derek Adams. Bradford had the off chance but were mostly woeful. Fifth time we’ve played them this season, they haven’t beaten us once. “Derek Adams, it’s happening again”.

I’ve nothing against Bradford City but if you’re going to attract these big crowds by making the season tickets 50p each , it’s not going to do you much good if they all just main and grumble.

I mean obviously cheap tickets is a good thing, but consistently giving it large about how maaassive your club is gets very tedious. hah! one of their fans was commenting that we had banks of empty seats against the blades yesterday, like yes you do get banks of empty seats on 12.30 sky tv games if you aren't Man Utd!

calzino, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 18:46 (two years ago) link

another one of my beefs with Bradford is that during their short lived prem era they were putting season ticket adverts in parts of the Heavy Woollen District that were always split between Hudds/Leeds. They thought they were bigger than NATO.

calzino, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 18:55 (two years ago) link

it was fun listening to the sky commentary spend the first half hour of the match wanking over and raving about how unstoppable Fulham are while we made them look quite stoppable and took a 2-0 lead. One of them a soft penalty, but perhaps a bit of payback to that cheating thug Mitrovic. If we had an ordinary keeper this probably would have been a draw at best. But even the Fulham commentary guy was saying that Nicholls is probably the best keeper in the championship he's seen by miles. Not bad for a freebie who couldn't even get a game at MK Franchise last season.

Yes! I’m very proud of my football club. We don’t get promoted very often - this is the sixth time in our 100 year + history - and we’ve been in this division for a decade. That’s what you get for not having a rich owner who can fund a loss-making season or two, but it makes successful seasons even sweeter.

Two consecutive party Saturdays to come, lovely.

imago, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 08:11 (two years ago) link

congrats Tim and nice to see Phillips on the scoresheet. We have got a rich owner again after our previous chairman's ambulance chasing company went bust, but he's a Yorkshire bastard and looks under his bed on a morning to see if he's lost any sleep. But still we weren't expecting to make the playoffs as our budget is in the bottom 5 of the champo and the our new improved back line was built from free transfers including the 2nd choice goalkeeper from MK Dons. Not arsed about winning the playoffs, just want to stop Forest because their fans are vile and despite them beating us twice this season they had a meltdown after our glorious one nil, against the run of play victory at their place. And I'll add they were scab bastards during the miners strike - since they are so obsessed with history.

calzino, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 08:17 (two years ago) link

Phillips has been a strange one - hasn't managed to hold down a place in the side, has scored a couple of absolutely crucial goals. Clearly he's a decent footballer and has so much pace but somehow doesn't seem to affect the game very much when he's on the pitch. I suspect his game is playing off the shoulder of defences and that's not really how we play (our manager likes a CF to crash about and disrupt defences to make space for other attackers). His goal last night was so odd: picked up the ball in the middle of our half, took it all the way down the pitch and scored, but somehow managed to look slightly unconvincing throughout (from about 50 seconds in here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55vjHPF1usk (don't watch the chance he blew just before that).

Anyway I am grateful to Calz personally for arranging the loan of Phillips and am rooting for Huddersfield to do the business in the last two games.

Tim, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 08:30 (two years ago) link

it's good when a young loan striker doesn't fit into a manager's system, looks out of his depth and fails to hold down a place and is still manages to score two crucial goals imo!

Rob Edwards (Forest Green) got manager of the year in L2, but their collapse has been incredible to watch. Someone said they were 28 points clear of them at the start of Feb, and we overtook them this weekend.

I’d say it would be just like Exeter to throw it away now it’s in our hands but “it” has so rarely been anywhere near our bloody hands that no-one would know what we’re like in this position. Which is to say I still expect us to find a way to lose out on the L2 championship but we’re playing Vale who are experiencing their own little collapse so you never know.

sincerely hope you succeed in pissing on their bonfire, Dale Vince seems like a right twat.

There's always something to hate about all clubs, ECFC included. As far as rich dudes plaything clubs go, FGR seem pleasingly weird to me. I wish he'd decided to do this with a club in a place where people didn't have to drive to get there, and a place where a club might have a socially and economically (as well as environmentally) sustainable future. Like, I wish he'd taken on Gloucester City*, who weren't far from the league some years back, decent sized place and way better connected by public transport Hard to see FGR getting anywhere without a constant stream funding, feels like Rushden & Diamonds but made out of wood not leather.

FGR have been taking a modicum of heat about flying a Palestinian flag at their games, I note.

*I have literally no knowledge of what's going on or has gone on at Gloucester City, it's just Gloucester's nearby and might sustain a club once Vince has moved on.

Tim, Tuesday, 3 May 2022 11:41 (two years ago) link

I didn't know about the Palestinian flag. lol was assuming he is a smug eco-fash wealth creator who travels the world on the wooden solar powered sloop his minimum wage workforce made for him. And I still could be right! but kudos indeed for the flag.

Ecotricity have been my energy supplier for ten years and they're notably user-friendly, haven't had any bullshit off them. Plus, I liked Stroud just before everyone realised it was great and moved there

I always feel like Gretna in Scotland are the model for the Vince/post Vince world.

Gloucester are in our league (NLN), went shit or bust with the budget to go for promotion last year only for it to get announced nobody was going up, were relegation candidates up until February this season.

Stroud is batshit crazy, was the centre of UK LSD production for years and is now so vehemently anti-vaxx I managed to get my booster by booking the day before when there was a 2 week waiting list everywhere else.

yeah Gretna were quite contentious and hated by some Scottish football fans. I learnt this from ILX after years of wrongly thinking they might have had some broad novelty appeal ... what with the freescoring doctor and that.

EFL playoff final wins

Huddersfield 4/5
Forest 0/0
Luton 0/0
Millwall 2/4
Sheff Utd 0/4
Boro 1/2

...intimidating

calzino, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 22:23 (two years ago) link

That's some result for the Gas today.

Poor old Cobblers, eh?

I am mildly disappointed about missing out on the L2 title on goal difference, really only because Saturday night in Exeter would have been a proper laugh if we'd done it. Promotion was always the main thing. Saying that, there's a photo going around of an EFL branded arch saying CHAMPIONS sitting unused behind one of our stands, I confess to finding that a bit upsetting.

Tim, Monday, 9 May 2022 12:48 (one year ago) link

Seeing Argyle crash out of the L1 playoff placess to Franchise, 0-5 at home, only to see Franchise limply surrender to dirty old Wycombe in the playoff semi, is a small footballing joy.

Tim, Monday, 9 May 2022 12:50 (one year ago) link

it was a great feeling when we dumped Franchise out the L1 playoffs semis, despite losing the home leg 2-1. It was even sweeter that they had dirty cheating ex-L66ds barsteward Alan Smith being the pantomime bell end in both games.

just saw a clip of Nathan Jones suggesting Town paid big money for free-transfer players and even mentioning Hogg, who we got for pennies nearly a decade ago because he hated living in the south. Lol, Town even missed out on Luton's top striker, Elijah Adebayo because our chairman baulked at the price and they outbid us. If I was a Luton manager playing dubious underdog mind games I'd mention what a shithole Kenilworth Road is. They are only the underdogs in the sense that Corberan is a much smarter and more likable manager on a learning trajectory that will take him to a top job at some point. Regardless of Monday's result.

their long winning run after losing 5-6 games on the bounce with Hughton started at our place, but then we had a classic 1-0 against the run of play smash and grab at their place and then got beaten by them in the cup. I fucking hate them tbh and am not confident we could beat them again this season. I hope the Blades have an against the odds turnaround against them tomorrow.

we got done by a BALD ref doing his last big gig, the replay and VAR showed there was contact on Tofollo but BALD overruled, and that was just one of the shit decisions that went against Town. But I'm not really that arsed tbh. The last time was only fun for about 6 games and it took us nearly two seasons to get rid of all the overpaid garbage players, fuck the prem tbh.
