So have any of your kids come out? I knew for a long time Ophelia likes girls. She talks about gender politucs, homophobia,... a lot. The other day she confided she's in love with a girl. Alas it's not mutual. She asked if I was ok with her liking girls. I said:"Why wouldn't I be! Too bad for the boys. And the girls are lucky bec you're a smart, beautiful and good person. Love is great. And one day there will be a girl that loves you back. I'm sure of it."

Our daughter came out a year or two ago (that I can't remember when indicates how little drama this involved). She's been in a relationship with the same girl since then.

And I am not awesome. Just trying to do good. :-)
Our older kid came out this summer as gay but we already knew since they’d had a girlfriend for several months. Now they are 9 and came out to us an non-binary and are out at school but not with relatives. I had an easier time with the first coming out only because I’m more familiar with it, not that I’ve been anything but supportive about the gender expansiveness.

yeah, social knowledge is learned and the social paradigm for gays is better established now than for non-binary.

So true. Also I had to wrap my head around the fact that they are being called a different name at school by friends and teachers alike. It really is not so shocking considering they stopped wearing dresses right around turning 5. Anyway, it comforts me how comfortable my kid is self-advocating. They even asked the teacher for a new solution when they didn’t feel right going to either the boy or girl segregated sex-ed lesson. In response, there was a special lesson created just for them.
