i'm not a connoisseur but I like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Porter, most anything from Anchor Brewery in SF, Hoogarten, Turbodog and Purple Haze (both Abita I think?), Guinness and Newcastle and Belhaven. Had a Chimay Blue once and it was good.

Don't like: the evil twins Heiniken and Amstel Light, most wheat beers, any stout in a local brewery/restaurant, most Pete's Wicked beers.

And when it comes to cheap domestic, anything beats Coors Light.

I had never been a beer lover until I sipped a Budvar on the train from Vienna to Prague. I ended up drinking about 7 of them on that not especially long ride.

Unfortunately they don't sell it in California (unless someone knows otherwise!). They do sell something called Czechvar which is supposedly from the same brewery but doesn't taste nearly as good.

Search also: Guinness (yes A, beer is good food!), Budweiser (especially during Raider games - n.b. it tastes like shit in Britain where they change the formula) Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Red Hook, Anchor Steam, and Keystone Dry (for being the best tasting dirt cheap beer when I was 18 and had no way of obtaining anything else - respect).

czechvar is budvar. it is packaged exactly the same way and, well, yeah, it is the same...guess they call it that in the US to stop people confusing it with budweiser, the king of beers. maybe the export-destined stuff ain't as good or maybe it doesn't travel well. as they say. or maybe it just tasted better on holiday.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, but I having had guinness in america. UGH. guess it's the FDA; they have to pasturise it, or something, and it makes it taste a bit very disgusting.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

re Budvar vs. Czechvar, Actually, I think the alcohol content is different (i.e. less), since most beers in Europe would have to be called a "malt beverage" here in the USA and there would be difficulty marketing/selling it in certain places. Actually I think the reason American Budweiser tastes shitty over there is that it's too alcoholic.

Although I might be completely off my rocker. Does anyone know if this is true?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

>Additional Q: Why do some bottled lagers (Rolling Rock, Stella etc)

Light causes beer to "skunk" through some chemical reaction. Clear bottles are useless, green a tiny bit better, and dark brown the best, but not perfect, at preventing this.

fletrejet, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, Thinking about it, I always notice it most with green bottles.

Fave beers of late: Dogfish Head Shelter Pale. New River Pale. Harpoon.

Okay but not tiptop: Wild Goose, Sierra Nevada, Bass, Rogue Dead Guy.

House pale ales at Dr. Dremo's, Rock Bottom, and Sweetwater Tavern.

And please let us do not be hating on the Budweiser. For what it is, it is excellent--very easy to drink and it reminds me of my ancestral homeland of St. Louis, Missouri.

http://popthecap.org/

North Carolina repealed Prohibition in 1935, two years after the federal repeal. As the state prepared to once again allow wine, beer and spirits into the state, powerful mill owners pressured state legislators to impose an alcohol by volume (ABV) cap on beer.

Not wine. Not scotch, whiskey or pure grain alcohol.

Only beer.

Why? Mill owners were concerned that workers would fail to report to work on Mondays.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

canadian beers that actually are honest about being from canada (not fosters or other "imported" stuff claiming to be from some other country) that I have enjoyed in the past:

Molson Golden - cold, yellow, better than corona or bud

Labatt's - I have no memory of what this tasted like but I do remember making an impassioned argument that 2Pac and Meat Beat Manifesto were the two most important artists of our time after having a lot of it

Moosehead - I used to like this very much and then one day it was just too sweet and acidic for me, like a cider or something, I couldn't deal.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Lagunitas is OK but I think I actually prefer Stella

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

This Brador stuff is virtually unheard of on this side of the border, apparently-- I had to Google it! You can still get it, it seems, but not much... it's apparently better known south of the border.

I'd generally take a Labatt beverage over a Molson one, so good to hear it's better over there, too. Then again, in Quebec, if your options are "Bleue" (color of Quebec sovereignty) and Canadian (not so much), you might want to drink Bleue, just in case there's a very drunk sovereigntist (is that a word?) looking for a fight! OK, it's not that bad anymore, but yeah. Safety first! Also, tastes less like tumors.

whoa more xposts

I never had Golden either. Ironic that nobody has mentioned the Molson I am most familiar with: Molson Export! Hah! Moosehead is alright in the summer I find, but there are other, more delicious things (ESPECIALLY in Quebec, and they're cheaper here, too)

I can recommend some delicious Quebecois beers, if you'd like?

Will M., Tuesday, 12 June 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

If you want Texas-brewed beer you can do a lot better than Shiner Bock (which isn't bad for what it is.)

I've been drinking a lot of Summer Lightning of late. Great stuff for the ever-higher temperatures we're being subjected to. For those not in the know, it's a sort of strong, sweet ale. Works a treat.

dan m, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't, tissp, but FAPpage might have tempted me out of revision.

Last year was great though!

oh I got the SUNRYE a weekend or so ago, that was pretty good as I recall

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

ooooh i love that Green Flash too. Bell's Hopslam is fantastico, as is the Oberon.

i managed to go along for one of the evenings (thursday i think)... there were some great beers, a shame though that they'd run out of some of the interesting looking ones

tissp, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

On the recommendation above I found and brought home a sixer of Bell's Oberon. Results later.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Re: Oberon (his is going to sound kind of snobby, but I don't care)

It just hasn't been the same since they started making it all year long. Either that, or they changed the recipe big-time. It was never very hoppy, but still had the Bell's "bite" that was found in all their beers. Last summer I had one off a tap and could've sworn the place was watering it down, but a taste of a bottled version confirmed that the flavor was severely lacking. I don't know, maybe my tastes have changed, but it sure doesn't seem as good as it used to. People used to clamor for it at the beginning of summer, and as soon as it was released it was sold out almost instantly. Still a pretty great beer, but if any one Bell's product has suffered as their popularity has (deservedly) risen, Oberon is it.

(Maybe this doesn't sound that snobby, I knew people who refused to keep drinking it once they changed the name from Solsun and stopped selling it exclusively in 22oz. bottles...)

dan m, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Like, I remember it being cloudy, yeasty, a real great thirst-quenching summer wheat beer. Now, it's just kind of... thin and limp?

dan m, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ginger beer + Maker's Mark is my new favorite drink, btw.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Ginger beer + Maker's Mark is my new favorite drink, btw."

Also fine with Rye whiskey. Or, for that matter, vodka and a twist of lime.

Mmmm...ginger...

Deschutes Brewery out of Bend, OR makes some fine beers. Their porter is probably my favorite. Haven't tried (or seen, I don't think) their IPA.

Yeah, also why have Corona if you can have the aforementioned Tecate (my favorite, too), Modelo, Pacifica, or Dos Equis?

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

Really, I'm okay w/all beers save malt liquors, Milwaukee Beast/Keystone/etc., esp. if someone else is buying. Oh, I don't really like Hamm's, either, though I do often sing that "the beer refreshing" jingle in a slow Andrew Eldritch voice.

Asahi Super Dry is probably my favorite. Also likes the Hoegarden (sp?). I've just been drinking plain old Budweiser lately; it's been treating me surprisingly kind.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

well the thing is if we accepted it we wouldn't be having discussions about much. I mean we can all sit around and be like "I like this" and "i like that" and nabisco says "thing is you're BOTH right" and everybody is all "another nasty dunk by nabisco" but that internet is boring.

of course there's a thin line between contentious debate and calum vs blunt but I'd rather err closer to the flames than hang out with a bunch of promise keepers know what I mean

I had a lot of fun drinking this beer tonight. It's the Willy Wonka's Three-Course Dinner Chewing Gum of beers. A real treat. Doesn't taste like a 9%. So, search.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 25 August 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

I have to stay away from 9% beers. I drink all beers at the same rate! Disaster beckons.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 25 August 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

You'd really want to stop and savor this one. It's all about the flavor and creaminess. I tend to hit my beers pretty hard too, but this is one worth settling down for.

Two beers in the fridge right now: Dogfish Indian Brown and Bitburger. Not that thrilled by the Dogfish considering all the hype and the fact that the IPAs are very good. The Bitburger was $20 for a 24-case and it's really pretty good for the price -- sort of like a better Budweiser (which itself is not a bad beer).

Anderson Valley's Summer Solstice Cerveza is one of the best brews I've had in a long time (and I've pretty much had everything the distributors around here provide)

OTOH Mendocino Valley's White Ale is nearly undrinkable. Tasted like fruity/spicy sausage. Should be ideal for making beer brats, though.

D: Guinness (tastes awful, costs a bomb), Tennents (battery acid/clyde water), Carling, Budweiser, hell - almost every bad premium lager served in bars over here...

are there any lagers of note brewed in england? that are available in america?

mizzell, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

English lager? Well ... There's a lager made by Wells that is available over here, but I don't think I've ever seen Wells lager in England. Must be an export only deal (possibly a re-brand of something less notable) so I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you want English lager for the sake of English lager.

And that is actually all I can think of.
