things to do in Manchester

I'm probably going to Manchester in mid November for a B&S fanmeet.

Are there fun things to do in Manchester other than go to B&S fanmeets?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't they called picnics anymore?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

How is a B&S fanmeet fun, or am I missing something?

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, what's all this 'fanmeat' shit?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(& can we eat it?)

Miss Laura, Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I lived in Manchester for 4 years and I now I can't think of anything, esp. in November.

Whitworth Park Gallery?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

There's bound to be some top-flight football action.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

sankey's soap is a good night in sufficiently, er, urban dystopian surroundings to make you feel like a techno futurist. the soundsystem is gob-smacking by the way.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't they called picnics anymore?

Sinister has picnics. This is the other B&S fandom.

Geeta, you are very funny.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

There's the derby at Maine Road. I know Belle and Sebastian fans love that kind of rough and tumble.

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Want to leave.

(would I be allowed? or more imporantly, would I want to?)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the other B&S fandom.

There is another? Tell me more.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Have a huge breakfast in Cafe Pop!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

If you do go to the Whitworth Gallery, go to the Whitworth pub alongside the park (Great Western Road corner?). It has yummy Marston's beer, or used to. Also, Brady & Hindley used to drink there, if you're sick.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

But if you're not sick, they didn't.

Smile at the Star & Garter is a lovely indie club (Saturday nights)

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Who do you think you are, Billy Fisher?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Smile at the Star & Garter *was* a lovely indie club (Saturday nights). I'm sorry to say that nowadays it is merely an indie club.

The Flemish Weaver in Salford is just as good a place for a fanmeet as the Saracen's Head in Glasgow.

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

smile is still going????????????????

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's Marston's beer you're after, you should go to the Burton-on-Trent area. They actually irrigate the fields with it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I do like Nick describing Marston's beer as "yummy", like a big indie fop.

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

..THAT HE IS.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I hadn't said yummy. But beer in that pub was one of my v.few 'MAN, THESE CAMRA BORES HAVE A POINT' moments.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I had one of those moments in the Head of Steam drinking some HIGHGATE DARK ALE. Boy that were a nice pint! And Seabrooks crisps!

This is related to Manchester because you can have a game of bar billiards in the Head of Steam before setting off to Manchester from Euston station.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmmm, Seabrooks.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

If the DV is going via Euston then he is surely nuts?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Feel the earth quake!

(We just had another)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be flying to Manchester, probably on a friday morning and returnign on Sunday. Saturday night is the debauch, so me and Rener will be looking for adventure on friday night and during the day Saturday.

is it true the natives round the Salford Lads Club skin alive those who come to photograph themselves there?

hey! that reminds me! isn't there some monster art gallery in Salford that's a blatant ripoff of the Guggenheim Bilbao? RoXoR.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Is it true the natives round the Salford Lads Club skin alive those who come to photograph themselves there?"

Yes, that is completely true, and who can blame them. I particularly like the use of the word "natives".

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Salford Lads Club to Rough Trade lawyers:

Sirs, we object to the Salford Lads Club being used in the artwork of your client's 'The Queen Is Dead' record. We understand the the music of the Smiths has been associated with unwholesome activities quite at odds with the ethos of our young boys' club.

Rough Trade lawyers to Salford Lads Club:

You're having a laugh. The place is a shithole - just look at it.

Salford Lads Club:

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

are there enough Manc ILXers for a FAP?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

DV- Possibly, but I'm afraid I'm elsewhere this weekend.

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Fab club on some friday nights = Voodoo at Retro Bar. Has a couple of local shit 60s garage bands playing live but decent dj and a general good vibe, with well-dressed peoples strutting about amiably. Plays Jonathan Richman, Elvis and the fabulous 'send me a postcard darling' by Shocking Blue. Probably the only indie/alt club in Manc that has more than 2 good looking girls in it.

Smile is vile. Stinking little shed and irritating Britpop/cutesy funindiepopcrap fans who jump up in delight upon hearing their favouritest song and rip their shirt off/spill your beer.

Tiger Lounge was ok once but the djs are smug fools who play the kewl songs off their dad's Hits Of The Seventies albums. Plus there's been a recent influx of dancing dads and office worker gangs. But they do play a couple of soul tracks and Bowie, Cure, etc. That's on Saturday at Slice.

South on a friday was good the other month. They played 'Marquee Moon' before the dancefloor filled which was super. Also, personal top moment of the year = on E dancing to 'be my baby' with Hot Chick and then dealing with 'love will tear us apart' coming on straight afterwards.

And that's about all I know. Obviously I'm not going to even bother mentioning crud like 5th Avenue and 42nd Street as they're for Stereophonicsers only and you're better than that. If anyone knows of some other decent nights around town then please please post details. I heard rumours of Night and Day having a Mod night every so often, is this true?

Ian SPACK, Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Except for the fact that I have met a bunch of Sinister or ex-Sinister types here, who are all great, I would have been sceptical of your finding anything less fun than meeting a bunch of B&S fans, except possibly meeting a B&H or M&S fan group. Maybe.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Tiger Lounge was never OK - music for people who don't know how to get their eyebrows out of the "raised ironically" setting. Smile, on the other hand, was a great, unpretentious night out which makes its pathetic demise into generic indie-schmindie hell all the more depressing.

"Send me a postcard" is fabulous, yes.

Shameless plugging - for all those who love sixties girl groups there's a night coming up in Manchester on November 9th. See here for details.

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Your night sounds superb, I'll certainly drag a few people along. I'd like to make an advance request for 'River deep mountain high' and wads of other Spector. Is this going to be a regular night or is it just a one-off? Please HAMMER Manchester with flyers/posters for this because a regular packed-out night of this stuff would be the place that my friends and I have been wanting for months.

Although I'm not a Smile veteran, the people there make my hackles rise more than any other and I think is due to their very unpretentiousness (which = chirpy SFA fans in jeans). What's so bad about a little affectation?

Ian SPACK, Thursday, 24 October 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

for the love of all that's true and good don't darken the doors of star and garter, south or *any* of that shit.
go to :
* electric chair (club - once a month)
* cornerhouse (cinema, ace mini-fests/cool stuff monthly)
* aficianado at the fat cat (sunday night club, every week, free entry and the face's '4th best club in the world' last year)
* funkademia (club, every week, saturday nights)
* the britons' protection (pub, round the corner from where the 'hac' used to be - full of ace boozes and real fires and stay-all-day
getting-sloshed-in-winter cheeriness)
* vinyl exchange (2nd home/church/record shop)
* chorlton (come see the 'richey lives' graffito before they wipe it off ! ...oh, hang on they have. what a pop town this is !)
*cafe pop (it's a shop, it's a cafe, it's had a re-fit ! still loox pretty much the same though)

etc etc etc

there's a new b+s friendly club night starting, i think monthly
from 28th november onwards, it's in some bar off albert square (where 'the ginnell' used to be for locals) which loox way interesting too, but anyway that's not mid nov so...

!! we're tremoring RIGHT NOW - there's been 4 tonight, it's hysterical !!!

piscesboy, Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Whenever I've been to Cafe Pop the lettuce has had brown patches on it. Sorry to hear Smile has gone downhill - recommending it shows I'm living in a time warp because I haven't been there for four years, but I had some of the best nights of my life there (and at clubs set up in other cities with the aim of doing a very similar thing to Smile).

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 25 October 2002 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ian, just so I don't steal the glory - it's not *my* night - my girlfriend's the one who's been working tirelessly to organise and promote it. I can, however, confidently predict that your wish for "wads of Spector" will be granted, although I'll be playing more Northern Soul myself. It's a one-off for now, but if it's a success I'm sure Elisabeth will want to repeat it, even if we're both too busy to make it a weekly event.

Incidentally, for "unpretentious" read well..."nice". Smile did (past tense) have a certain understated glamour about it (albeit one that borrowed heavily from the sixties) which managed to stay clear of the "see you down the front in your trusty DMs" cliche. Trust me, I wouldn't be seen dead in yr average indie club.

Haven't been to Cafe Pop in ages, we tend to go to Night and Day.

Tag, Friday, 25 October 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never felt cool enough to go into Cafe Pop. And it feels like somewhere you can only be introduced to by someone else.

Graham (graham), Friday, 25 October 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Pisces, what music is played in those clubs that you listed? I'm looking for a decent funk / soul place that isn't overly slick like whatever it is that happens at that Po-Na-Na's place.

And what's this Cafe Pop place? It's not that cute little cafe which sells reasonable suits and scarves downstairs near Vinyl Exchange and opposite Oxfam originals is it?

I've already began badgering people to come along to the girl-group night, though you should put a dress code on the flyer so I can persuade my friends to cease wearing horrible band t-shirts and trainers. And as there's gonna be N.Soul I'd like to make another advance request, this time for Etta James and Timi Yuro. I'm genuinely looking forward to this night, what's the venue like?

Also, any more good nights around town? No one has mentioned Fab Cafe. And for good reason - it's shit. I hate all that Dr Who sci-fi crap and someone should really stab the smarmy DJ (Max Oblivion? even his name is dire) through the eye.

Voodoo is on tonight by the way, all y'all should come along. I'm the guy with the Tamla Motown bag, feel free to give me a cig.

Ian SPACK, Friday, 25 October 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

disastrously, my own Manchester plans involve going to Smile on Saturday 16th November.

I am contemplating fappage the night before, but I might just go and have a curry with the lovely Rener.

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 26 October 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ian ! you need 'friends and family' -
on a night when mark rae is playing
especially. a mix of funk soul
hip hop etc, and *literally* the friendliest
crowd imaginable. dead funky.
'funkademia' can get a bit towny. it's moved recently
to a bigger slightly swankier place after 5 years above the scholar.
no it's not slick like ponana.
having said that i've never
been to ponana on the thursday night when it does it's
girlgroop/northern soul/stevie n marvin n stax thing,
only of a weekend. thought thursdays might be alright there.
there's always dancehouse of course, and i've seen
posters all round town for their new soul night,
which loox ace, a) cause it'll be free, and b) because
there's always racks and racks of boho-foxy-cute types in there.

town's nuts at the minute cause the studes are still
in that early 'let's go out every nightwith our 1,000 overdraft!!'phase.
all over the road they are of a saturday,
pissed and piggybacking, and in school bloody uniform.
bless em.

yes cafe pop is opp. oxfam,
and max oblivion - his heart's in the right place i just think
he comes across as a bit...loud and garish.

piscesboy, Saturday, 26 October 2002 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Ian, I was in Belgium. The venue is the top floor of a pub near Malmaison. It seems up to the job, nothing glam. No plans for a dress code - seems a bit OTT for a top-floor-of-a-pub do. But you certainly won't be discouraged from dressing up.

I've been inside Fab Cafe twice. The first time we walked in, took one look around, burst out laughing and walked out again. The second time, we had some Japanese friends with us who insisted on going in spite of our protests. Thirty seconds after arriving, some beered up student started leerily chatting up one of the Japanese girls and we left.

Max Oblivion used to go to Smile. He wore his sunglasses at night. Need I say anymore?

Max Oblivion used to go to Smile. He wore his sunglasses at night. Need I say anymore?
Mandee to thread!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only does Max Oblivion wear sunglasses at night, he also acted out this merry little scene:

Tiger Lounge. MO behind the decks believing he's an important cultural icon, as opposed to a cretin playing alt.dad standards in a substandard club.

My friend K: female, attractive, 5ft tall. She walks up to the dj booth and requests a Stevie Wonder track. MO responds brusquely with "Yes yes, in a minute". K returns to seat. Waits an hour. No Stevie Wonder.
So she returns to dj booth and asks again. Similar response as before. K returns to seat. Waits. 5 mins from end of night and no Stevie Wonder all night.
K returns to dj booth annoyed that a) MO had bullshitted her, b) He spoke to her like shit, c) He was a smarmy creepy shit. MO sees her coming and comes out from behind dj booth to greet her, putting his arm around her and telling her not to worry. K is repulsed, shoves him away and leaves club distressed.

So... MO merely loud and garish? Nah, MO suffering from new strain of the JohnLeslies which involve being rude as fuck to the girl you intend to sleaze all over later when she's drunk. What a charming little man he is.

Ian SPACK, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm...I've always tried to be honest with people when I've been DJing...if I haven't got a certain record then I tell them there and then. Sometimes, I've forgetten what people have asked for and felt bad for letting them down when they come and up and say "you didn't play such-and-such". But I'm sure everyone's met a DJ who's convinced they're something special for playing a bunch of someone else's records. And that "Max" didn't have the style to be merely standoffish doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Tag, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I-I-I miss Manchester!!!

(mans chest hair)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It misses you too, dear.

Tag, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck. Tag, it seems I'm in hospital (doing a medical trial - £650 for a couple of weekends, woo) on the night of your girl-group night. I'm gutted. Any plans for a follow-up one?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

If we do one, I'll let you know. I'm really sorry you can't make it - tell your friends to come along anyway!

Tag, Thursday, 31 October 2002 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, I might come to Tag's thingy.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone is welcome to my thingy!

Tag, Thursday, 31 October 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

bah, don't talk to me about thingy.

Tag, yep I'll convince my mates to go along but whether they'll drag themselves out of their stinky Tiger Lounge/Smile rut is debatable.

Anyone know anything about this Chips With Everything night at the Night and Day cafe on Saturday night? I've checked the site (www.chipsrecords.co.uk and click on party) but it gives minimal info. The clientele do look quite appealing so I think I'll head down there this Sat on a desperate mission to find some non-dogshit nightlife in England's second (third?) city.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Anyone know anything about this Chips With Everything night at the Night and Day cafe on Saturday night?"

No, but I've seen their fanzine and I wasn't impressed, lots of Northern Quarter in-jokery, but maybe I'm just being cynical. We went to that Club/Commericial Suicide thing a couple of times. The first time was in John Willie Lees - that pub in the Arndale that looks like face-glassing is mandatory. But it was great, lots of top notch electronic stuff being played. The second time at Night and Day was a big disappointment as it was far too RAWK for my tender taste, although I'm told it reverted to type later on.

Tag, Friday, 1 November 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, my Manchester activities next weekend have expanded to take over Friday night as well, so no FAP notices from me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ian, did you ever go to Chips with Everything? Anything to report?

Tag, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah mate, I never went down to it. One of my mates did though, he said it was really good. Apparently, Kings Have Long Arms were on, then Debasser, along with The Troupe of Dancing Girls who do formation moves to the music. I'm keen on checking out the next one, mainly because of all the Hot Chicks in the pic section on their site (http://www.btinternet.com/~edsyder/chips/partyframeset.html). The dj set is meant to be stuff like Peaches, Sonic Mook, Fat Truckers and Liars, which isn't my kinda thang but hey, it's gotta be better than Suede, Strokes and more Suede.

Something else good coming up in Manchester is a showing of that Christie Malry's film at the Cornerhouse, followed by a talk by the great man himself - Luke Haines, woo! Oh and Nick Moran and the director guy too, but Haines! In Manchester! Hurrah! Has there been a thread on his two solo albums yet? There needs to be, they're fantastic. This is on the 30th Nov I think. Tickets have been on sale for a couple of weeks so I dunno if there's any left.

Also, has anyone heard of Manc's resident 'electroclash' act Stazi? It sounds a bit wrong to me but the aformentioned mate says they're good. Though he is a budding music journo so I don't trust him one bit..

Tag, any other upcoming nights in Manc that are worth looking at? I want to avoid yet another wet weekend in Wigan.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting photies of the Chips night, there appears to be flagrant nudity involved. I've never seen that sort of thing at Night and Day.

I've heard of Stazi but I've not had the "pleasure". Why do we get an Electroclash act now? I thought it had run its course once Fischerspooner achieved their purpose in life and bankrupted Ministry of Sound.

I like Fat Truckers though. They made me laugh with their biligerent crowd baiting, hand jiving and generally putting cabaret into Cabaret Voltaire.

Upcoming nights? Fuck knows. But I'm in town tomorrow so I'll do some homework. Maybe there'll be another Club Suicide, I'm prepared to give it another chance as the first one really was damn good.

Tag, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't Fishyspoony playing Manchester pretty soon? I feel I'll have to get my booty down to that, just for the spectacle. I'm still trying my best to like Emerge but no cigar.

And that Fat Truckers... I'm pretty sure I saw them supporting Pulp in Sheffield last year. All I remember is a bunch of big rowdy guys having a laugh on stage. Thought it was shite at the time but I might like em now.

I know nowt about this Club Suicide thingy, where's it at and what debauched happenings go down there?

I get a sinking feeling that I'm gonna be spending some time at Rock World this xmas due to my no-good mates. Still, the 80s cock rock and 80s goth rooms ain't so bad though, so long as I avoid watching the ageing speedheads dance like Kate Bush to that Chameleons song. Any Mancs know that Martin guy with the cheekbones and pvc keks? He's a legend in his own Soft Cell song.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Dancing like Kate Bush is never a bad thing!!

fisheryspoon are playing in march (i think) -
the gigs have been put back
because the rocket, quite frankly, isn't taking off
so there's another single coming out in the
meantime to help it. it won't wash outside of the capital.
3 frenz who paid 15 quid for 1 of the gigs in london *hated* it.
all glitter and miming and nowt much else. goons.
the good track is a wire cover anyway.

'chips with everything' looks good, esp.
seeing as the next one is the night after the
manics at m.e.n.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm confused. How is CWE following the Manics gig a good thing?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

How is a Manics gig a good thing, full stop?

Tag, Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, that was uncalled for.

How was Autechre? I was vaguely curious, though they kind of leave me cold - sounds more like trigonometry rather than music sometimes. I like my electronica either melodic or dirty.

It's somehow reassuring to know that after 20 years they *still* play the Chameleons at Rock World, just so long as I'm a long way away when they do.

Tag, Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, that was called for!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 15 November 2002 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Possibly the best autechre set I've seen (and I've seen a lot of them). They played their own take on jump up dance music styles, so it was a set of techno, hardcore and electro twisted in autechre's own inimitable way. Very danceable and we did. Very little chin stroking, leave that for the albums. They didn't do ganz_graf though (they did nothing that had been recorded and released that I could tell) and I'd have liked to hear that on a big system. A great shame we had to leave early though to drive back to sheffield.

Ed (dali), Friday, 15 November 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i would have liked to have gone to this. they were very good in brixton last april

gareth (gareth), Friday, 15 November 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

you was down south though.

Ed (dali), Friday, 15 November 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

oh i know, i was speaking theoretically (with equations and that)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 15 November 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Autechre once, at the Music Box. I don't like them or any of the Warp/Rephlex stuff at all. I only went along because a couple of my pothead IDM mates managed to convince everyone it would be mind-blowing. It wasn't. It was the most boring night I've ever had out in Manchester. The only good thing was watching a Terry Nutkin lookalike bound around the club wearing just a pair of shorts and freaking out drug casualties by pulling the maddest faces ever and doing his spastic dance for them. The IDM friends have since befriended Nutkin and he always goes down to their IDM night to bound about in there. Surprisingly, he's not retarded at all, he's v well-spoken and timid.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Friday, 15 November 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

boring gigs in the city ? i could write a book.
most boring night *i've* ever had at a gig in manchester
was air (circa moon safari) at the ritz which was a
mogadon-strength snoooooooze. the silly arsed t shirt i
bought wouldn't have got near a
10 year old. god knows what posessed me.
they've got no better either if finsbury pk. new order types are to
be believed.

piscesboy, Friday, 15 November 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe, I heard that Air were awful live too. I'm just waiting for V/vm to return after nastily cancelling their gig supporting Kid 606 last month.
Pisces, what hot tips have you got for a night out in Manc this w/e? Have you checked out that 60s Soul night at Sofa yet?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Manchester. I mean, how many threads on here are about Leeds and how many are about Manc?

All them nights I listed on the other thread will be on in September, get Big Bad Tag to sort stuff out and I'll come along.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Stockholm.

I am neither big nor bad. Mary, when is your birthday?

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sept. 6, but shhh, don't tell anyone.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 July 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
on Sept 16th you could come to the Boom Selection club night at the Sofa Bar - i'll be there playing record(ing)s and stuff alongside Freelance Hellraiser, IDC and XFM's James Hyman - woo

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

But what should I do on Sept. 6? Will I enjoy Smile at the Star and Garter? Or should I go for something more glam/trashy? And is Peng Sing or whatever a good restaurant to eat at?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 August 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yang Sing. Yes, it's fabulous. Have the Sea Bass.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Madchestah rawk tour! Seriously, that´s the kind of culture that should be preserved. More music-oriented tourism in the city should be encouraged.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 29 August 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

dam i am in Manchester on the 10th but not before (then again on the 16th) - its a shame we can't hook up there before then but hopefully in London, innit

aprently the Star & Garter is alright tho (Ian SPACK to thread?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 29 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Matt. Do I need a reservation for Yang Sing? Is it expensive?

Yes, stevem, please plan fun activities for me in London.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 August 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Reserving's always a good idea Mary. Even if they're not busy you get better tables (or should do). As to expense well, it's not cheap but it won't break the bank either (the gf and I had a very nice meal plus a couple of bottles of wine for about seventy quid as I recall, bearing in mind that if we're going out for a meal we tend to go for it this isn't bad at all).

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 30 August 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmmm...Yang Sing. Best Chinese food this side of the Yangste, possibly.

Stevem, I will certainly make every effort to attend your little soiree.

Tag (Tag), Saturday, 30 August 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello. Oh God. This very evening, in just a few hours I'm playing at a fashion show. It's been advertised on local news and if you look in the Events Preview bit of the Guardian's Guide from last Sat. you can see it there. Oh God. Oh dear.

For those in Manchester, it's at Lucid@the Printworks sometime about 9 tonight. The venue looks swankyer than Sisko's bedroom. Oh God. Oh dear.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Would anyone like two tickets for Morrissey at MEN on May 22? I don't think I will be able to make it.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm. Well that was strange. The place was MASSIVE. Superclub size. Sitting in the VIP drinking free champagne was very strange, if very fun.

Unfortunately by the time we got on everyone had left (1.am on a Tuesday night) and we had the ole' technical difficulties in the set. Not the best gig ever, but one shoefire horsefuck of an experience.

Oh, and models are ugly.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Horsefuck?

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, what's the deal with those tickets?

run it off (run it off), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, shameless self promotion. Come to our night...

Eat your makeup!
Saturday 15th May
The Green Room
Whitworth Street
Manchester

Free to get in, expect electro/disco/soul, so long as it's pop.

I'll try and post a flyer in the next couple of days.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tix are for May 22--I would sell them at cost plus the price I paid for the credit card charge--don't remember the exact figure at the moment--seats aren't the greatest--upper tier I think--if you're interested e-mail me and I can tell you more info when I get home--(that goes for anyone else as well)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I may be coming after all. Is this going to be a big weekend in MCR--is there football also? Can anyone recommend a nice cheap hotel? I'm afraid there will be no room at the inn with all the American Anglophiles swooping in...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 16 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone recommend a good post-morrissey night out this Saturday?

holojames (holojames), Sunday, 16 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

There is the thing at the Brickhouse, but it is sold out; there is also Smile, but apparently it will be very crowded, and you have to get there before 11. Anything else?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 16 May 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's impossible to have a post-Morrissey night-out these days.

HELLO NORTHERNERS.

The Robster & I are in Manchester this forthcoming weekend and would like advice on cool things to see and do. I know nothing of the city. We will be based in Urmston and will probably be eating curry in Rusholme on Sunday evening.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 2 September 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

1st rule - be careful with curries in Rusholme.

___ (___), Thursday, 2 September 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

In what way? I can snarf loads of badass lime pickle and feel ne'er an ill effect.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 2 September 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Go to the Night & Day cafe. Take LOTS of money.

the impossible shortest special path! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 2 September 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And don't eat the tacos.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 2 September 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Having been victim and succesor of many of the curry houses in Rusholme, I just feel it is right to warn people. There are some really, really dodgy ones and some kind-of-quite-good ones.

I kind of miss the Moss Side locality for beer-football-beer-curry-beer-bus that I enjoyed for so long, but North Manchester has its charm.

___ (___), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon we're fairly safe with Rusholme curries as we'll be with locals what know where to go.

More non-food-related suggestions!

robster (robster), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi, I'm going up to Manchester tomorrow and will be there all weekend too! Er, fancy a Saturday daytime FAP in town? NOT in the Night & Day? At night time I am going to INDIE DISCO harhaharhahrhahrhharh marv, and am sure you would all be welcome...

Starry (hello chickens), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Man can never be warned too many times of the dangers of a bad curry!

The ibis is quite good. Err..... the Science Museum is great.

___ (___), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The ibis being the Urbis, and not a cheap hotel chain, obv.

___ (___), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello Starry! We'll probably be out and about in the city centre on Saturday so I reckon a drinky or three could be a go-er. INDIE DISCO? ARRGGHGHFFGFGFGLGLLFL!!! - er I'll get back to you. Will they play indie for old people (like in their 30s?).

SCIENCE MUSEUM? Ace! Where is that?

Waht is teh Urbis?

robster (robster), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, it's SMILE, of course it will! It will be an utter dive, hooo-rar. Robster that is RIPPING news! But it's been so long since I've been in the old county that I can't think of a boozer to meet in, how peonic! Science Museum could rawk out also hurrah.

Starry (hello chickens), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooh, Science Museum-pub-Smile FAPathon? I see Saturday stretching out before me in a beautiful alcoholic haze.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The easiest way to find the Museum of Science and Industry will be via the site - It's kind of down near deansgate locks off the Deansgate.

http://www.msim.org.uk/

The Urbis is a new museum, a bit more the cultural history. It looks bloody great and it is bang in the middle of town. Its all interactive and new, really.

___ (___), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm... MSIM = Free and Urbis = £5. MSIM wins!

robster (robster), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Luvverly!! Well aint this a smashing turn up for the books :)

Starry (hello chickens), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

MSIM is really really good as well - no question.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah mate, you wanna be going this:

TVOD with RHYTHM KING AND HER FRIENDS
The Tunnel @ Legends, Whitworth Street, Manchester
FRIDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER
10pm – 2am * £5 Entry

Kitty Yo band on and me on the decks/laptop playing out Miami Bass and Latin Freestyle and POP and other arse-wiggling stuff.

ha, Starry I'll be moosing about that Indie Disco on Saturday night too. Come and say hi - just ask about for Bifferdyspacktroll. Maybe we can dance to Bros!

http://www.tvod.net/
http://www.kitty-yo.net/index2.php?show=artist&id=30

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Bugger. Still not been down to TVOD and as I'm playing on Friday I doubt I will this time either. Ach well, I'll be in spitting distance of the centre of Manchester soon so I'll doubtless appear at some point.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Cock. I'm djing that night too, at some party.

Bros. You've got no dignity, no doubt.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Golly! I've been a fan of bifferdyspacktroll for AGES! Marvellous. You may know the gurl whose birthday it is if you're what I believe the kids call "a regular" there. Perhaps we should like, post photos or something, so we know what we all look like. If you spot a goth, it is Tag, not me.

Starry (hello chickens), Thursday, 2 September 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I deny all goth accusations but it will be a cold day in HELL before I go to Smile again.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what about south, tag?

david acid (gareth), Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

No no, no pictures - that'd be all too easy. Instead, I suggest you wander about calling everyone a spack and the first person who doesn't cry/lash out/glare will be me or my buds! You'll most probably see my big Sesame St-lookalike chum first, and I'll be the mean-faced suit boy stood next to him. I'm very regular yes but I don't like to broadcast it, who's the birthday girl?

Robster & Liz, fear not about being dead old - the Smile crowd is split equally between a) boring guys in bad bands who look like Jesus, b) teenagers whooping to pop, and c) 30somethings drunk and muttering in a corner until the Cure comes on then KABOOM they're on the floor and the floor is theirs. And then there's me and my Spack Gang pointing and laughing at boys who look like Rod Stewart/Rod Hull.

Tag, you should really forgive Smile for past crimes. It's a king cheapo night and when Andy Woods is on (which is this Saturday, hurrah) he plays only the finest pop and indie, none of this baggybaggybaggy South nonsense. And hey, my dance to Bros is a masterclass in refinement (I have a 3ft Bros mirror in my room in which I look and pout and practice my moves).

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

South. I have erased it from my mind. What is the "finest in indie" exactly?

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 2 September 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

St Etienne, Orange Juice and 'Take Me Out'. Now don't split hairs you surly punk, you know they're good for dancin.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 2 September 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I should've made 'surly punk' my gmail address. Yeah, yeah, I know they're good for dancing. Maybe I'm wavering a little. More examples please. And don't say the Scissor Sisters.

But...Bros? I'm all for pop, but they really were shit.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Tag, we know you secretly love Bros and have a cache of Grolsch bottle-tops hidden in the garden.

Haha it is not the Robster & me who are in our 30s (although he is teetering on the edge) - it is the out-laws i.e. his sister and her husban'. I think The Cure could tempt them. But I pray you give me leave to vomit in a convenient corner when St Etienne are played.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

In their thirties??? Imagine that!

I like Saint Etienne.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you are in your thirties, it's an understandable symptom.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, I have been aging backwards since I turned 29.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Will you enjoy reverse puberty?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you forget our night at south and corbiers tag haha?

david acid (gareth), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I will avoid puberty by merely oscillating between 20 and 29 for enternity.

I haven't forgotten, Mr so-called Acid. The company was good. But South traumatised me and has left deep emotional scars.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what is that night that plays komeda soundtracks and stuff?

david acid (gareth), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez it's like cugging a brick trying to persuade Tag out for fun. It's just your bogstandard IndiePop night, New Order, Smiths, Only Ones, not too much modern Indie really (though I'm not seeing how Scissor Sisters are a bad thing, Prince+Elton=happy Ian). They don't play Bros though I do wish they would. They play Jamelia and Girls Aloud and that kind of thing.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's just your bogstandard IndiePop night".

You were doing pretty well up until then. Sarah tells me they didn't play much in the way of 60s pop and soul, which is a shame as that's something I do miss from the old Smile.

I'm far more likely to go to TVOD though fate has conspired to keep me away (and this month is no exception). I'd dearly like to see DJ Bifferdyspacktroll on the 1's and 2's. Let me know when you're showing out again.

Sorry, but I fucking hate the Scissor Sisters.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not the only one Tagward.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Nite and Day Cafe on Monday - Lynskey is playing a solo laptops n guitars n keyboards NOIZ-fest at 9pm sharp. I've literally no idea who else is playing, but hey, come for the Lynsk, stay for the new air-con or something like that.

i went to South on saturday. it really is rubbish isnt it?

*@*.* (gareth), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yes its fckng awful. an absolute abomination.

hey identify yrself! who are ye?

anyway, next time go here :

http://www.starandgarter.co.uk/

ignore that tosser upthread (by the name of um, piscesboy) who 2 years back dissed the place in favour of all sorts of stuff that's gone rubbish since.

piscesboy, Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, South did use "clubs are dead" as their slogan around three years ago.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

there was much testosterone

i am confused by clint boon, does he not tire of playing that stuff every single week? he likes other things, does he not wish he could play those too sometimes?

he paused and encouraged people to shout 'boon army', i think he shouted too

i asked for happy mondays performance, only for the other dj to say, "its too underground mate"

i enjoyed my weekend regardless, but, i would not want to go to this place very often, however, the better options for the weekend weren't really suitable for this occasion

i found the steve & stevie lp in king bee records:)

it is i, charlton lido (gareth), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

clint boon never gets tired of that sort of thing. Ever.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"boon army", christ save us.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Any good drum n bass nights in Manc? I'm reet in the mood for one.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I did eventually go to the "new", "improved" Smile at the Star and Garter and it was OK, but way too studenty and the music was good but generic. Maybe I shouldn't have been sober, or been with two friends who were so blatantly "on the sniff". Maybe I should be younger. On the plus side, it was good to finally to meet piscesboy and see Ian again, even though he was cuddling up to the dj all night like the brazen whore he undoubtedly is.

Let me know when Clique starts, chaps.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

TAG!!!! TAG TAG TAG!!!!!! NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing to see here.

Yrclubbingfuture, Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, way too many people have been calling me the DJ's Bitch lately - I'm a slag though, got four on the go at the moment.

A lot of the girls there were actually genuinely afraid of your rapacious buddy, Tag. You would've liked it more last Saturday, the 11th birthday, with someone from B&S djing. Played loads of mildly unsuitable stuff like Cocteau Twins - yud uv luvved it.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My butt was grabbed at South on my birthday. It was a bit blokey? I still yearn to enter the hallowed halls of the Star and Garter.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 November 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

McTag,

I hope that on the 15th anniversary of Spike Island you plan to play nothing but the Stone Roses all night.

In the area!

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

keith!

I wanted to send you an e-mail but I didn't know your address!

perhaps ally sent you one. I hope he did.

: )

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG... Ah... I sent you my email to your webmail address here...

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Steve, it would. Bring people.

Keith, no. Nish, even. I went to Spike Island and it wasn't very good. RICK-AY! from Eastenders sat behind us. We laughed at him. That was the highlight of our day, apart from the fireworks.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

my e-mail, here, is real. I wasn't sure how to reply to yours!

I hope everything's OK!

sorry, tag.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Tag, my plan was initially to come to Gunchester this weekend; I've got the last week in April and the first week in May off, but may be able to wangle a trip to Madchester for your club... Fancy going to cockney end of april/start of May?

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG,

I'm going to come through to weegie tomorrow to see if I can get a hold of Ally; I need to give Mick his keys back! Maybe see you tomorrow.

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Keith, dunno. It's quite busy here at the mo with gigs, and ting. Basically we want to make a proper go of this so we'll be generally whoring ourselves around with flyers and whatnot. Then again I might be able to wangle a mid-weeker to London and write the next day off if we go out for robot/curry action.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Mid-weekah! Going to work it out!

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. You Glaswegians are greedy fuckers, RJG, you have a perfectly good thread of your own.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That wasn't supposed to sound so harsh.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's imagine you did it in your George from Rainbow voice.

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Woo Geofrey, you Glaswegians are greedy fuckers, hehehe, ooh.

I believe that coincides with the Girlie Weekender.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 April 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It would also probably (possibly) mark the 10th anniversary of the last time I was in Joshua Brooks!

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 April 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what does that mean?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 April 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, it's been renamed Sofa and then renamed back to Joshua Brooks since you were there.

Which Girlies will be involved in your Weekender?

Do I know all these people? I recognise two names.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it the two Bs you don't recognise? LB hangs around here quite a lot, although doesn't post so much these days. NB is her sister.

Ah. Well, bring them.

A week today (Wednesday the Sixth) I'm putting on Tigrics (Hungarian bleepiness, ambience and drones) and Si-Cut.db (atmos, clicks and that sort of thing) at The Font Bar in Manchester with ILX's own Tag, NicheIan and Damien DJ'ing in support.

If any Manchester ILXor's FAP I can promise a good night.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Bulgarian clickcore is so much more...erm...accomplished. Yes, accomplished.

Our resident Bulgarian has just walked in soaked to the skin and bleeping furiously.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Thursday, 30 June 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Is it true they nod for no and shake their heads for yes? Bulgarians I mean, not "ILX's own Tag, NicheIan and Damien".

Oh yeah and other upcoming things:

I'm djing at the Star and Garter tomorrow night (Saturday). I'll play mostly pop and Motown and that, but might have to fart out a Libertines record on occasion. I apologise in advance.

Fiction Non Fiction next Tues at Tiger Lounge. Some bands on, free in, I'm djing again but will have more freedom and will play 'edgy' dark shit to dance to.

And Lynskey's thing on Weds too, come that.

This is the press thing for the thing on Tues, (fwiw I didn't write it):

Espionage again, 13th August, downstairs Joshua Brooks. There must and shall be disco.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 7 August 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh my word, it's Tag! I was just thinking the other day about the time when your housemate used your Sinister password to post something hysterical about strawberry bubble bath and size 3 shoes. Ahem. How are you, and what's this Espionage gubbins. Are you DJing, because if you are it sounds like it could be fun.

Koorbssir (Koorbssir), Sunday, 7 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Hello Rizzo, are you well? I myself am fine. You are the second person to mention that post in less than a week. It will plague me for always. Yes, I am DJing, look at the site and it will reveal all.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 8 August 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

Hi all, if you're in Manc tomorrow night (Sat) perhaps consider coming to Smile at the Star & Garter. It's an indie disco, I'm DJing and I can get away with more than bogstandard Libs 'n Franz so come up and ask me for some hott shit and I swear down I might play it.

Also, if you're over 35 and gay and a man then maybe come to Retr0tivity at Thompsons Arms next Thursday. Myself and my older DJ manfriend (together we are THE MIDNIGHT COWBOYS) will be playing awesome gay disco and it'll be grand. Though you might have to do some shag-tag domino thing that I don't understand but hey.

And if you can't make that, then come to CLIQUE - mine and Piscesboy's clubnight on the Friday (26th August). The last one was a rip-roaring delight of digital-pop and hott young Mancs.
http://photos33.flickr.com/35329194_be0c3661cc.jpg?v=0

And a bit late now but last week I DJD at Top Shop in Manchester and Sheffield the week before. I had the most fun DJing ever and ILX's own Alex In Doncaster even stumbled across me while I was getting flustered and playing Robyn. I'll post the playlists for these Top Shops later tonight

I honestly do not know. But if you want to go out drinking I can recommend a bunch of good bars and clubs.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

aw, thanks muchly for the reply.
personally, i'd like to come out drinking, and since i'm clueless about things to do in manchester, i'd pop down to see you DJ on saturday night. but i know for a fact that my colleague wouldn't be up for it, and i don't fancy going out on my own in a strange city, so it'll probably be the uni bar only for us (unless we can find a NerdCafe to play in).

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Mancunians! Am playing at Fry Up, upstairs at the Southern in Chorlton tonight. I may even pull out some Northern Soul nuggets as someone sweet-talked me into it the other night. 10.15 til 11.30-ish is my set.

Thanks for coming down to Espionage, Ian and Pisces. Half decent turn-out, although it was more laddy than I'd have liked, as Pisces will testify.

Am playing at an ART exhibition opening in Stockholm on Wednesday which fills me with fear and sexual magnetism in equal measure.

one month passes...
The Star & Garter has a few good nights, try Indigo or Smile, they even have a B&S night. www.starandgarter.co.uk

Jake Sanders, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Might as well give an update on this. Clique is last Friday of every month and that is grandspanking ACE (and it might just be a little something to do with myself and Piscesboy www.clubclique.co.uk) and Smile every Saturday at the Star And Garter is boundt be reet and first Friday of the month is Invest In Property and that's always top and Tramp is on every Weds night and it's rammed with studes but good ones and they've had Chromeo play and Justice DJ (they played 'Renegade Master' and the roof went off) and Ignition are playing soon, and The Knife are DJing at the Indigo at the S&G soon and there's just basically a lot of very ace things to do. Mail me if you want more tips, I'm your friendly neighbourhood Manc (except I've got this inexplicable grudge against people called Emsk and I'm also living in Wigan and Liverpool at the moment but in Manc only at weekends and Wednesdays). Fiction Non Fiction is on at Tiger Lounge tomorrow (Sunday) and I'm djing and there are some decent bands on that so why not do that too?

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 1 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Has anybody been to the Mint Lounge? I'm looking for something to do on 14th as a last-day-at-work type of thing and I like the sound of burlesque, but I also know that Mint Lounge is playing host to Modculture's Outta Sight! night on that date, which sounds possibly-interesting but not much like burlesque.

If anyone has any other ideas for things to do in Manchester on October 14th that'd be cool (shame the poetry fest will be over).

PS I'm not friendly, but then I'm at least half as much Londoner as manc anyways, so you can't draw any conclusions from that.

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 2 October 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I really dislike the Mint Lounge as a venue. It's like a barn or a school hall with a few 1920s paintings on the wall. I expect it'll go out of business soon as the new owners are busily shafting all the promoters, and that venue is constantly going under and being bought out by new people.

The smaller room is quite nice, very *clean*. But no dancing goes on in there, just sitting and smoking.

The burlesque nights there are pretty dire too. They consist of a charmless 30something brat onstage, braying unconvincingly about how sordid and decadent this all it. He has a whip, he cracks the whip. People yawn, turn back to their drinks. A few chubby girls dressed as Cleopatras do a badly choreographed dance. The end.

Outta Sight isn't bad, a fair-to-middling Northern Soul night. Not terribly busy but nice enough to have a dance and hang out all night. But there'll probably be something better to do that night, what else do you like (other than burlesque)?

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 2 October 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I did wonder if they'd managed to do anything with the venue, it suffered a bit from being barn-like in it's Planet K days, but at least it was conducive on occasion (Les Rythmes Digitales v. good there for e.g.)

The brat with the whip would be Rosie Lugosi?

I like all sorts of things, but it's a long time since I've been a regular clubber. I lean towards 80's, goth and indie I suppose (though I do like a bit of old fashioned trance too), but we're doing an 80's thing on the 15th for a hen night, and the only other person at work who's into goth & indie can't come out. So I thought something a bit different would be good. We're all over 25 so nothing too relentlessly stude-oriented. ;)

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 2 October 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Well we've talked it over and we're thinking about drinks at the Tiger Lounge (cheap) and then Satan's Hollow (also cheap). I work with cheapskates ;)

Zora (Zora), Monday, 3 October 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Brat wiv a whip = Alix Walker. Looks like a ventriloquists dummy, talks like a failed drama school kid.

Tiger Lounge should be ok, fine for office parties. Satans Hollow though, are you sure? Been a while since I last went but it's all teens with neon dreadlocks and Murder Dolls hoodies. I think.

Just go to Outta Sight, the crowd is nice and friendly, mid 20s to mid 30s, few older sorts hobbling about. Music is just standard soul, northern soul, tiny bit of Motown. Unless you and your workmates are under 19 and very enthusiastic about throaty growls and guitars (what we affectionately call 'gromits') then you'll enjoy there more than Satan's Hollow.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 3 October 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been to a burlesque night at the Mint Lounge, but I've been to Nish Nash Nosh (which is every Saturday) and we really enjoyed it. No dance floor, but the crowd was friendly and the music was good (lesser known soul, disco) and it was just turned down enough so you could have a chat.

Try and search the What's On listings for 14th Oct. I see that Blowout at the Bierkeller is on - I hear it's quite popular at the moment, but I haven't been. I'm told it's a surreal venue and the drinks are probably fairly cheap?

Our usual haunts are Eyes Down at the Roadhouse (can't wait until it returns to Band on the Wall after the renovations) and occasionally Friends & Family, also at the Roadhouse.

Eyes Down is incredibly friendly, low key and excellent music - broken beat/hip hop/dub reggae/house. Kelvin and Jon-K are the amazing house DJs and there are often excellent guest DJs or a live band as well. Next one is Oct. 7th or Nov. 4th. I'll definitely be going for my birthday in December...

F&F is also a good hip hop/dub night, but gets a bit trendy which annoys me sometimes. It can be quite busy, and a bit mobbed by young students or fashionable types, especially this time of year. That said, they can put on amazing live acts - Edan was brilliant.

elisabeth k, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't too impressed with the Mint Lounge myself, but Four Tet are playing soon so I'll go to that. Never been to Blowout - I guess it depends on who's playing on the night - it's more about the live stuff.

Of course, on Saturday's at the Bierkeller you can go to an Oompah night. Ian, this sounds just your thing.

Dress Code: Bin Liners, undies, anything
Music: Live Oompah Band
Playlist: All the classics! "We are the champions, Tulips from Amsterdam, I will survive, Who the XXXX is Alice" and many more
Dance Styles: Energetic and on the benches, freestyle, no style

Hey don't knock it - I've just been to Munich and it was great.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Yay I'm going to that Four Tet gig too!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

A woman from the Bierkeller took me home with her and stole my virginity while I was v drunk, wasn't nice.

was many moons ago but it still makes me cringe.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

He woke up to said woman's small child running in the room and shouting "MUMMY MUMMY WHY WAS THE BAD MAN HURTING YOU", then rolled over to peel last night's condom off his back.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh and the Bierkeller is a fucking awful place. Why not try their scrumptious litre jugs of flat warm beer, poured just hours earlier, mm mmm.

I'm no fan of Blowout because live music sux. But most people speak well of it, you'll see plenty of facial hair.

What precisely is 'broken beat'? I mean, I hate it already for having such a wank name but still, I like to know my foe.

I heard that the Oompah night practically bankrolls the Bierkeller, damn those lousy hen parties and old drunks.. (though Weds has Tramp which is not lousy.)

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Ian, my man, some of my old Owens Park pals and I will head up to Manc sometime next month. If it's on for Clicue time, hand me a guest slot and you're laughing ;-).

BARMS, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I've never actually set foot in the Bierkeller. In Munich I didn't dodge one pile of sick in five days, nor did anyone ask me what the fuck I was looking at. I have a funny feeling that the delights of Oktoberfest wouldn't transfer well to this country. I'm all for lederhosen though.

A beginner's guide to broken beat here. Do try to keep up, Ian.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

"Dance Styles: Energetic and on the benches, freestyle, no style"

that so describes my dancing, mmaybe i should check this bierkeller place out.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Seen that, Pisces? Cheeky BARMS trying to wangle a guest spot. It's enough to make you go 'tch tch' in despair. Anyway, Barmy me ol' bud, if you and chums get in Joshua Brooks anytime from the moment we open (2130) to 2230 then all y'all get in for free. Afterwards, you're paying full superwack and maybe a bit extra for being slovenly.

It would be good to see you down there though, even better if the oh-so elusive Taggart can get down too. I think/hope Alex In Doncaster and j0e are coming again as well. For all intents and purposes we could even call this a 'FAP'. But we shan't because us hardy Northeners don't do that. But anyway this type of chatter is for the Clique thread.

I skimmed that broken beat thing and kept seeing words like 'fusion' and 'groove' and 'fostered the german scene' and zzzzzzz.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Only saw the responses now. I don't care for terms myself, but broken beat records don't sound like anything else, and I have to call it something. I don't care for any wanky waxing on about it though - trying to write about how music sounds turns into high school drivel 95% of the time anyhow. The best I could say is it's melodic and a bit house-y, and very driven/rhythmic - but the rhythms are a bit chopped up/off kilter which makes things interesting.

I don't get the sense that it's a precious sort of scene, though no doubt there are wankers who are into it just like anything else. And I stand by my opinion that Eyes Down is one of the friendliest nights in town!

Bierkeller sounds like the kind of place you could have a good one-off surreal night, and then never go again. A bit like that weird pub that was in the side of the Arndale car park, and has been knocked down...

elisabeth k, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I've been played a bunch of stuff I was told was "broken beat" and I'm none the wiser. I'm notoriously hopeless at genres though.

I've listened to one of those Eyes Down mixes. Um. I'm sure their punters are lovely people who rescue injured puppies, it's all a bit noodly for my liking. There was a couple of nice Brazilian things on there though.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

We're not under 19, Affectian. We don't have gromit outfits. But we do like, watch Kerrang whilst ironing and have a stlong appreciation for throaty growls and guitars. Some of us do anyway.

I've never been to the Bierkeller and your stories have made me scared.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

So be it. Be sure to come back on here afterwards and unleash your tales of HORROR.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry, I will. Who knows though, City Life may contain our Holy Grail of club nights and save us from The Hollow (think our office copy should arrive today).

Thanks everyone, for the advices.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Affectian, shouldn't you be learning something somewhere?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Carl! Beedy's looking! Run! Nah, I get Weds eve and Thurs morn off. Also off tomorrow as a one-off. Which I shall spend reading ILX and possibly playing SA. So, what's the news on you and your flatmate? You gonna get married and have a bundle of horrendously screwed-up kids? Do!

Zora, could you do me a big favour and tell me what clubs are covered in this week's City Life, and who wrote the articles. I'd look myself but it's covered in plastic wrap and I'm too cheap to buy it.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to mention that Zora's unashamed "I'm not friendly" statement has earned her my undying respect.

Exactly, you’ll fit right in.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Hi,
I actually run Outta Sight and would obviously recommend it. ;-) We're only going to do 2 more there, then finish at Christmas. But the next 2 will be excellent, got some great DJs in - and we usually play a lot more than just soul - ska, 60s beat and garage, latin etc.

Personally I don't even like traditional northern soul!

For the future, possibly looking at doing a new night that's more late 60s guitar based, but dancey all the same. If the right venue can be found.

Dave W

Modculture, Friday, 7 October 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand not liking Northern Soul.

Elisabeth, half expected to see you at Go! Team last night.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 10 October 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

I did think about going ages ago - but never got round to getting tickets. We had a big night at Matt's on Friday though, so was in fair monging mode the rest of the weekend anyhow.

Were they good?

elisabeth k, Monday, 10 October 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

They were ace. Just the right balance of noise/rhythm/melody, loads of infectious energy, crowd involvement. And they had pom-pom dancers. We had big cheesy grins all the way through.

Monging? Tsk.

Hey, sometimes you've got to mong. We had to have a proper send off 'do after all.

Good. I like most of the album - love the Shirley Ellis sample and cheeky De La Soul bits - though I get a bit bored they go into full on indie mode.

Did you see Broadcast? I was sad I'd missed them at Night & Day while I was in NYC, but then I bought the album and I think it is AWFUL. I'm so disappointed - where are the lovely gloomy pop songs?

elisabeth k, Monday, 10 October 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see Broadcast as I too was in foreign climes, but I love the album.

Princess Superstar plays on the 31st, woo.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 10 October 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

nice to see you on saturday tag. i was a good 4 smirnoff ices to the good by the time i bumped into you so if i was talking b alls i can only apologise.

piscesboy, Monday, 10 October 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry, you merely seemed your usual effervescent self.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Hey Pisces and Ian, do you promise to play Robyn at the next Clique?

Tag (Tag), Saturday, 15 October 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
did anyone get to the Mint lounge on Tuesday, for four tet and explosions in the sky?
First time i'd been in there, it wasn't all that bad. Explosions kinda bored me but four tet provided ample bleeps and beats to wake me up again. shame i had to miss the end due to train arrivage and both bands being on later than billed.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

No, it was sold out before I got my act together and got tickets. Typical me.

Princess Superstar was good on Monday though, despite strong lary lad presence in audience.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

tag! i can't apologise enough for the accidental near-blunting of your stylus on friday. ooops. hope no damege was done. i'm sure not. i'd only just about recovered from falling over (sober) outside 3 minutes before, and went on to fall over again (drunk) on my back while taking down some fairy lights.

as if this thread isn't embarassing enough.

piscesboy, Thursday, 3 November 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Not my stylus, not my record. It's already forgotten. Sorry I never made it to Clique, was hardly worth it by the time we finished at EYM.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Looks like my little hat is safe yet again. No worries Tag but try to head down someday. November looks set to be a big ILXy one so do that if you can.

[Nov 25th, Clique in Manchester: www.clubclique.co.uk for anyone not already aware]

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 4 November 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
Well, the Clique thread's down and I don't log in at work, but all Mancs welcome tonight to see Stevem spin and currently nauseous me puke on your shoes. It's gonna rock.

BARMS, Friday, 24 February 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

will my CD-Rs work? the suspense is almost unbearable!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

> see Stevem spin

will he be playing records as well?

koogs (koogs), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

if you wanna go to Clique tonight, say you're one of the london lot. you'll get in free.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

If Steve's fretting himself this much over his CD-Rs and the vinyl decks don't work, I suggest Joshua Brooks dig into their pockets and sort their equipment out.

BARMS, Friday, 24 February 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

if you wanna go to Clique tonight, say you're one of the london lot. you'll get in free.

I'm taking you to court for libel, Godwin. You coming down later to hassle the young girls? I've already told the enormous Russian doorman to keep an eye on you.

No records tonight, all digital media only. And yeah, we've done everything short of threaten violence to get new equipment in JBs. It ain't gonna happen. Every month we have a mad panic that something has gone wrong and it usually has but it all turns out nice in the end. It's kinda like an episode of He Man.

Still, all signs are pointing towards tonight being ACE and yes, all Manc or NW or from-anywhere-else-but-visiting people most welcome.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Still, all signs are pointing towards tonight being ACE

You forgot to say "despite known club-risk/DJ eccentric Barima's involvement."

BARMS, Friday, 24 February 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

haha I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping the jumpsuit/fighting with girls rumours aren't really true..

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

it's either tonight or tomorrow, what do you think?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Stop acting like the old man you look like and do both. Is Nick H coming?

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, keep hoping.

x-p

BARMS, Friday, 24 February 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

i'm heading off now, see yous laters.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
can someone tell me about these places:

night and day
big hands

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

Small and grotty but with charm. Bar staff range from chatty likeable folks to the most horrifically sullen bad-tempered nobs - depending on what time you're in there (ie. avoid on Sunday morning).

What are you heading over for? You should make it on the last weekend of the month so you can come along to Clique>!

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Roxy, i'm always in big hands, it's a muso place, the likes of Elbow. I am kloot and various other Manchester bands hang out there.

Night & day is ok, another muso place, but tends to have more bands playing.

hello Mr Jones.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Clique may be dead by the time I get there! We are not coming til circa April 2007 :X!

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

The very idea that Clique won't be rammed to the rafters in April 07... Nope, does not compute. No really, I guarantee it'll be going bigger better harder faster stronger than ever and Pisces and myself cordially invite you along. You can experience the delights of watching a sozzled not-goodwin making a complete biff out of himself too!

n-g, you out at S&G this Saturday?

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

sozzled not-goodwin making a complete biff out of himself too
biff= wigan slang for gentleman who behaves in a most honourable way.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 20 July 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

its Futuresonic this weekend, eveywhere as usual. So get down to that.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

Are you out at Futuresonic Ste? Us Clique lot are DJing at Dave Haslam's Love Music Hate Racism thing at Kro2 on Saturday, which is part of the whole Futuresonic thingy. We've asked to do an early set so we're on about 5pm, come over and say hi if you're about.

(same to you godders, get your drinking in early so you can be a complete embarrassment before midnight again, hurrah! Get Stone Monkey/Jason out for it too)

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i'll hopefully be there for the Saturday all day. We only have a few laid down plans of what we're deffo going to see so hopefully most of the time we'll just play it all by ear and so might get to see the Clique posse.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

The only thing to do in manchester this weekend is go to this

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

so you can be a complete embarrassment before midnight
it's all i live for.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

six months pass...
go to the super-casino...

Manchester wins super-casino licence
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/ced7b9e4-b050-11db-8a62-0000779e2340.html

poor Blackpool, last Autumn New Labour turned to Manchester for their Party Political Conference now they don't get the super-casino.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

the best thing they could do with blackpool now is shut it down.

and i say that as someone who spent 16 fucking years growing up there.

srsly: they're fucked now. i was convinced they'd get this. i mean, i'm not convinced supercasinos are the greatest thing in the world, but at least it was SOMETHING. poor ol' blackpool.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

Manchester has no need for this. I'm a manc and I didn't know we were even applying.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

What Zora said. Where on earth did that come from? http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/234/234705_manchester_hits_casino_jackpot.html Some of the residents' comments - link at the bottom - are quite interesting.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Oh good, we're going to get a non-super casino. I'm sure that our in no way corrupt or mismanaged city council will manage this well.

God Bows to Meth (noodle vague), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Boggling! Did Tony Blairs get someone to sneak next years budget on Manchester @ the bookies?!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

It's been pretty big news in the local press for a long time, I'm surprised you've not heard about it before.

Not thought too much about the implications but at the very least it'll mean they have to sort out areas like Beswick. Which can only be a good thing, right?

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

I have a few ideas about what could sort out areas like Beswick, involving lots of JCBs and maybe one of those cannon balls onthe end of a chain like wot there is in Withnail ahem.

Grimly OTM re Blackpool - I thought Blackpool had it sewn up. Highest residents approval and it's been planned for absolutely donkeys - but oh well...

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

poor blackpool, they will have to wait until Autumn 2010 for a govt review to be published before any new super-casinos are considered.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Zora OTFM

Did any Mancs actually want this? I don't think so. I live in east Manchester and it's not exactly been the hot topic of conversation out there.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

SM, you don't think this is a good thing for East Manchester? (Also, you get my email about this Friday?)

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 19:23 (nineteen years ago)
