I really want to see Touch of Sin.

dull list for dullards

imago, Sunday, 11 June 2017 15:06 (six years ago) link

Lots of movies I am glad are not here. A couple I am surprised are not here (In the Mood for Love, Mulholland Drive). A couple I am sad are here (Million Dollar Baby, 40 Year Old, Llewyn, Boyhood, I'm Not There). Super happy to see Gleaners & I. Most I am OK with, as far as stupid lists go. I'm fine with There Will Be Blood or Spirited Away, maaaaybe Yi Yi, though tbh I have not seen a few of these.

a touch of sin by a mile, might be tempted to re-watch Munich.

calzino, Sunday, 11 June 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

The point of newspaper lists is to get people to watch movies. I already had a couple friends say they were gonna watch A Touch of Sin as a result of this thing.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 June 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

The two Lynches and Tree of Life being supplanted by a handful of the most overrated, meh-worthy movies pretty much lost me straight away. But I will be interested to see which of the ones I'm less familiar with y'all rep for the hardest.

Sir Isaac Gluten (Old Lunch), Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:02 (six years ago) link

iirc the point of newspaper lists is to generate revenue for the newspaper (via people like me clicking to see whose names are responsible for this pile)

qualx, Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

A service that generates a profit is okeedokee with me.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:10 (six years ago) link

The responsible parties were fairly obvious, given the venue. But your click is greatly appreciated!

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

Million Dollar Baby...now that was a movie!

more like matthew badlose (wins), Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

I prefer Ratatouille to Inside Out, but calling the latter garbage is baffling to me.

Voting Eternal Sunshine because while I like quite a few of these (There Will Be Blood, Inside Out, Boyhood, Moonlight) it's the only one I've seen multiple times.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Sunday, 11 June 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

Inside Out is a poorly plotted mess w literally one-dimensional characters

If i had to pick an animated kids feature for this list (which i def feel is not a valid requirement btw), I would pick Zootopia

Οὖτις, Sunday, 11 June 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

The whole "journey back to the brain" is a bunch of arbitrary and nonsensical obstacles that serve no purpose beyond filling the running time

Οὖτις, Sunday, 11 June 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link

Inside Out doesn't have a hot fox iirc

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 June 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

Top of the century: Inland Empire and The Turin Horse. But, A Touch of Sin is right up there.

Cherish, Sunday, 11 June 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

I've only seen 6 of these but I can't deny that those 6 are all movies I'm glad I saw, so good job I guess? Voted Boyhood just on grounds of strength of emotional reaction on viewing. (Certainly I had a stronger emotional reaction to Mulholland Drive, though, can't deny that.)

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Sunday, 11 June 2017 20:24 (six years ago) link

For what its worth, I haven't seen:

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu
Summer Hours
In Jackson Heights
l'Enfant
White Material
The Gleaners and I
Mad Max: Fury Road
Wendy and Lucy

And as far as I can recall, I don't think I've even heard of:

A Touch of Sin
Timbuktu
Three Times

Of the former list, some are things I've kept vaguely meaning to see and others are ones I just don't care about. Feel free to correct me on anything that my life is lesser for not having seen from either list, though (as long as it isn't Mad Max).

If it'll make me appear like less of a stick in the mud, I've picked up the DVD of White Material a couple of times at the library, read the back, and went "nah, looks boring."

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Sunday, 11 June 2017 21:12 (six years ago) link

I can't describe your taste, I'll say that for ya.

White Material has some eye candy.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 June 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

A Touch of Sin, Boyhood or Eternal Sunshine are all excellent, but my favourite five movies of the century are all not there. "I'm Not There" is there instead.

Still very much opposed to the weird consensus that mawkish Pixar films are now to be considered great art.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 11 June 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

I'm generally fairly positive about Paul Feig, but that list... Moulin Rouge? Deadpool? Casino Royale? Love Actually?

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 11 June 2017 22:05 (six years ago) link

I'm Not There is a pretty easy choice for me, I haven't seen it since it came out but the others I'd consider voting for are probably worse than I remember (There Will Be Blood & Eternal Sunshine).

flappy bird, Sunday, 11 June 2017 22:50 (six years ago) link

Moonlight is officially overrated btw

Pick the two of the 25 I have not seen.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 00:18 (six years ago) link

Went with Boyhood; mind you, I've only seen a few of these.

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 12 June 2017 00:21 (six years ago) link

Why the eff is "The 40 Year Old Virgin" on this list?

That's the kind of early 21st century comedy where I look back at it and can say "you know, like five or six of the scenes extraneous to the main plot were brilliant, why couldn't these scenes have BEEN the movie?"

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 12 June 2017 00:22 (six years ago) link

outside of "Spirited Away", which is a masterpiece this list fucking sucks

There Will Be Blood was decent. the level of praise it gets is astounding.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 June 2017 00:31 (six years ago) link

well Mad Max and Eternal Sunshine was cool, havent seen most of these tbh, the ones i have were entirely forgettable

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 June 2017 00:32 (six years ago) link

i saw There Will Be Blood twice in the theaters and a couple other times at home, don't think since 2009 though. the ending is amazing - specifically the last shot, the last line, and blaring Brahms before cutting to credits. A movie can get away with a lot of problems in the middle if you've got a great opening and a great ending. Just remembered that the first hour has almost no dialogue.

flappy bird, Monday, 12 June 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link

A movie can get away with a lot of problems in the middle if you've got a great opening and a great ending.

I want to say that about Out 1, but I don't really remember the opening.

Yeah, Adam, a list with popcorn fare like Summer Hours, In Jackson Heights, and The Gleaners and I fucking sucks.

Sir Isaac Gluten (Old Lunch), Monday, 12 June 2017 01:29 (six years ago) link

where is Kung Fu Hustle? that'd be the kind of 'populism' that wdn't make me puke

anyhoo the way this intro is written makes it 100% unclear if Times readers on FB chose part of the list.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 01:55 (six years ago) link

There's only one movie on here that if someone told me they hadn't seen it I'd tell them "You really gotta see it", and that's "Spirited Away". There's about 10 others I consider pretty good, and one I didn't like much at all ("I'm Not There"). The rest I haven't seen. Lots of good choices on the 6 directors' lists in the linked article. The list definitely should have had more comedy on it.

o. nate, Monday, 12 June 2017 01:58 (six years ago) link

If you haven't seen the rest, how do you know you wouldn't have laughed?

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 02:11 (six years ago) link

Spirited Away. Is bad and pointless and boring. I think Boyhood is the film I like most of these. I left the cinem halfway through Yiyi, I know that's terrible but I didn't care about it. I care a lot more about Museum Hours and Children of Men than I do with anything here.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Monday, 12 June 2017 02:27 (six years ago) link

Wendy and Lucy isn't good. It's so fake.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Monday, 12 June 2017 02:29 (six years ago) link

(xp to Alfred) That Mr Lazarescu one looks like it might have been funny in a weird way, but unless those Clint Eastwood and Claire Denis films are very uncharacteristic, I doubt they are very amusing. I would have liked to see a lot more obvious comedy though - stuff like "Borat", "The Hangover", "Grand Budapest Hotel", "Napoleon Dynamite", "The Trip", "Shaun of the Dead" - as well as comedy-dramas like "The Squid and the Whale", "Happy Go Lucky", "Happy Christmas", "Rachel Getting Married", "Please Give", etc.. - any of which I would put on a list like this.

o. nate, Monday, 12 June 2017 02:30 (six years ago) link

It's stupid that Mulholland Drive isn't on the List though.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Monday, 12 June 2017 02:32 (six years ago) link

For non-comedies I think should be here: "The Wrestler", "Grizzly Man", and "Tree of Life" come to mind.

o. nate, Monday, 12 June 2017 02:34 (six years ago) link

35 shots of rum / 35 Rhums is so much better than The White 'Material though #Claire Denis Stan.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Monday, 12 June 2017 02:36 (six years ago) link

I've seen 19 of these and maybe 3 would be on my own list. 40 Year-Old-Virgin is such a failed stab at populism. I guess they are trying to signal that they value comedy but that film's stature, such as it was, is rapidly shrinking for comedy nerds and general audiences alike.

Zootopia

The Hangover

The Lives Of Others
Shattered Glass

Movie I honestly wish had been on this list:

Josie and the Pussycats

I like Shattered Glass but yeah it's absolutely not listworthy. And I agree with the chorus re: Inside Out. Up would be infinitely preferable as the Pixar entry. White Material is kinda a wtf pick as well

yeah, as smart people have been pointing out for years, The Lives Of Others is sentimental garbage.

Magic Mike 2 is better than at least 10 of the films listed.

Vendredi soir (2002)
L'intrus (2004)

War of the Worlds is amazing. it's Spielberg's best movie. the first hour is just incredible, i saw it twice when it came out and i started crying when Dakota Fanning was freaking out and screaming "is it the terrorists???" 9/11 was less than 4 years prior - captured that apocalyptic feeling without addressing the event itself (i can't watch any 9/11 fiction, it makes me too sad and angry. i'm avoiding reading about that awful 9/11 musical that won a bunch of Tony's the other day).

I haven't seen it since it came out and that final scene where William H. Macy gets found out at the grocery store with a counterfeit $100 bill has stayed in my mind ever since. I remember it had a really unusual and unsettling atmosphere and something about that final scene has haunted me. So I just looked up the movie and apparently I conflated William H. Macy's character in Fargo with Willem Dafoe, who's actually in The Clearing. whoops.

I did my list sorta off the top of my head, although top 10 is solid. I'm sure I'll remember something I forgot tomorrow.

Loved Broken Embraces as well.

1. Zodiac
2. No Country for Old Men
3. No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
4. The Heart of the Game
5. The Squid and the Whale
6. Elephant
7. Spellbound
8. Lost in Translation
9. The Social Network
10. You Can Count on Me
11. Carlos
12. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
13. Wendy and Lucy

15. Best of Enemies
16. O.J. Simpson: Made in America
17. At Berkeley
18. School of Rock
19. Ghost World
20. Angels in America

I liked almost all of these immediately; #12 and #18 grew on me more slowly. Except for At Berkeley, I’ve seen all them anywhere from twice to a ridiculous number of viewings for the top two.

I loved Perks of Being a Wallflower, although still baffled that those kids wouldn't know who was singing "'Heroes.'"

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 June 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I wrote about that. It's so egregious, I've come to find it more funny than annoying, and them not knowing is used really well as a dramatic device, if you can buy it. And again, I could maybe accept that they don't know "Heroes"--highly unlikely, but possible. Not knowing "Heroes" while you are swapping tapes with the Shaggs and Nick Drake on there, that I find literally impossible.

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan

No place on my list.

O.J. is a (slightly) above-avg ESPN TV series.

I didn't realize Decasia was 2002. Put it on your list or go home.

On my 2002 list.

I feel like LEGO Batman might have been a better choice if they had to have a token cartoon that makes people cry.
The LEGO Movie itself is probably better than a few of these choices though.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 18 June 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

nah the token "cartoon that made people cry" was Up in 2009. just that first sequence. I think after that Pixar thought they had to do it with every movie. I never saw Toy Story 3 bc the reactions were just ridiculous - "oh my god, i couldn't stop crying, it was so sad and wistful and melancholic!" God, sounds horrible.

i wonder how many other Yang films the typical Yi Yi voter has seen -- you know, the ones you have to see twice to comprehend what's going on

If by lightheaded you mean giddy, exhilarated, reveling in the pleasure that movies can give you if you enjoy either life or movies? Sure. Yeah.
