Hockey coming

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 27 September 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

this penguins-to-the-white-house thing has been . . . disappointing

sid is a master of 'pucks to the net/just gotta skate harder tomorrow' so it's not surprising that, particularly as a canadian citizen, he wants nothing to do with american politics

and i can understand that the franchise wants desperately to avoid alienating half (?) its fans. idk, maybe they could have been all 'we'll visit along with the NBA champs'? but we have very definitely come to the point where visiting the white house is a political photo op for its inhabitant, and if a side must be chosen, you might as well choose the right one.

i was at least hoping for a joke about how malkin would always be welcome

anyway, if you need help sleeping, here are loops of skaters practicing. the crunch of the ice never gets old: https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/3pzvp5/til_that_after_the_radio_feed_ends_on_nhlcom/cwbrzar/?utm_content=permalink&utm_medium=front&utm_source=reddit&utm_name=hockey

How energetically should I jump on the Leafs bandwagon? Can they win the Cup this year?

Answer in a way that a baseball fan can understand. Are they like the Cleveland Indians of the late '90s, filled with all these high-powered young hitters but with mediocre enough pitching (goaltending/defense) that their offense isn't enough? Or are they so good offensively that just okay defense and goaltending might do.

It takes six steps to get from Bartolo Colon back to the first MLB game in 1876.

Bartolo Colon played with Harold Baines for the 1999 Cleveland Indians
Harold Baines played with Minnie Minoso for the 1980 Chicago White Sox
Minnie Minoso played with Phil Cavarretta for the 1954 Chicago White Sox
Phil Cavarretta played with Charlie Grimm for the 1935 Chicago Cubs
Charlie Grimm played with Red Ames for the 1918 St. Louis Cardinals
Red Ames played with Jim O'Rourke for the 1904 New York Giants

http://www.baseball-reference.com/oracle/

clemenza, Monday, 27 November 2017 02:05 (six years ago) link

(Two gimmicks on that list: besides Minnie Minoso, Jim O'Rourke retired in 1893, then came back at the age of 53 for one game in 1904. If you exclude Minoso it takes seven steps, and if you cut O'Rourke's career off at 1893, it'd probably take eight.)

Everyone compares Gretz to Ruth in terms of dominance over the field so that comparison is correct, I suppose. The euro influence wasn’t as pronounced as it is now.

Brodeur has kinda become the archetype for big goalies, even after the Finnish/catch everything school came around. He has a longer tail. Hasek is mythic tho, I agree.

Gretzky had some fine years in LA, but was also hobbled by injuries. got his team to the finals once and lost (Hrudey in goal, so i realize this this may not be fair). His best years were in Edm though.
Robitaille is my fave King all-time so i don't discount him at all, but DB is such a complete player. I've never seen anybody else lay big clean hits on people while in the same motion turn a fine offensive play the way he does. And he does it everyday. And he's captained 2 cup-winning teams.

it would create a cool rivalry with vancouver

but more importantly, it would add pressure on vancouver to get it's motherfucking act together otherwise the nhl would pull the canucks out of the city like the nba did with the grizzlies

Met a friend for a movie tonight, a movie we knew would be silly and was just an excuse to get together. Late in the afternoon, someone he knew messaged that he had an extra ticket for the Leaf game; my friend passed, not wanting to cancel and not having any way to get in touch with me anyway (I don't have a cell phone).

Later, as we left the movie, I said something like "Hopefully the Leafs didn't come back from six goals and win in a shootout."

i would never want the emergency-goalie-off-the-street thing to change -- it is awesome -- but it's kind of a weird cop-out?

i mean if a baseball team runs out of pitchers or catchers it's not like they can pull dudes out of the crowd. go tell one of your healthy scratches to put some pads on

I know this guy probably gives zero shits and I'm only picking on this because it's the Blackhawks but really? $0? That's shitty. They're getting so much positive PR out of this, I hope they do something for him (beyond free food, games, and a jersey).

I live in Saskatoon and the crash happened in the part of the province where I grew up. Last night and today have been a total punch in the gut. Junior hockey grounds so many small prairie communities: it's a social event, it's funded by local sponsors. And the kids are chasing that NHL dream, hundreds of them riding the buses across the province. Heck, my niece just finished a season of elite Bantam hockey, busing two, three hours to games in small towns. This tragedy has shaken Saskatchewan to its very core.

Was hoping the Jets had enough gas to put up a better fight, but I'm happy for the GKs. What a wild year and playoffs. What hockey person, regardless of loyalties, could ever be disappointed in that run? Rooting for the West in the final.

This from Deadspin writer. Lack of superstition is refreshing. Just do the damn thing.

When it came time to accept the Campbell Bowl as West champions, the Knights don’t have a captain, so they sent out veteran Deryk Engelland. Without a moment’s hesitation, he grabbed the damn thing, eliciting a gasp from the Winnipeg crowd: There’s a superstition among some hockey players that you’re not supposed to touch the conference trophy, or you won’t win the big hardware. It’s obviously bull. Engelland said they had been encouraged by Fleury to touch the bowl, because, as Fleury noted, Sidney Crosby always does and together they won three Stanley Cups. “We talked about [touching the trophy] beforehand as a team,” Marchessault revealed. “We went against the odds all year.

andrew m., Monday, 21 May 2018 14:06 (five years ago) link

If TB make it, there'll be two players on the ice that have a shot at a personal three-peat, which is cool. Fleury, Kunitz. Ole Reavsey would have to settle for personal two-peat.

i’m glad it’s two franchises that never won the cup, a whole bunch of likeable players on both sides.

I forgot Caps had made Stanley Cup final once before, in 1998 (where they were swept by the Red Wings)

olie kolzig and peter bondra haven't forgotten

mookieproof, Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link

i mean i'm for vegas if only because it might force the other 29 GMs to just throw the book out of the window and stop it with the old hockey clichés.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 May 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

hah -- it would do just the opposite. 'look at this team -- no stars, don't even have a captain, just hard work and a will to win' etc etc

mookieproof, Thursday, 24 May 2018 20:20 (five years ago) link

i want vegas to win because i live in vancouver but am not a vancouver fan and the canucks have never won and a club in its first season winning is going to upset people

Even on slomo replay it looked so fast. Also cheap and painful. Wld feel bad if Ovi gets no cup this year. Good series so far though

lâche pas la patate (outdoor_miner), Friday, 1 June 2018 15:04 (five years ago) link

Upon further review I rescind my "cheap" comment. That was kinda awesome. Watched game at a bar w no sound on so hadn't realized who received the blow. And hadn't really picked up on Wilson's initial intentions

lâche pas la patate (outdoor_miner), Friday, 1 June 2018 15:10 (five years ago) link

yeah clearly looks like wilson thought he was gonna blindside him, instead...

Plain spoken Canadian boy blows past the soft language of American sports diplomacy

it would be extremely un-hockey for them not to go to the white house, but who knows

will vegas make the playoffs next year? it helps that they're in a shitty division

mookieproof, Friday, 8 June 2018 15:46 (five years ago) link

there's one adorable MAGA lummox but only 7 americans on the roster it is a mystery maybe Trudeau can get to them first that would be a twist

Devante Smith-Pelly has apparently said he won’t go the White House. Fox News is making a big deal of this in their inimitable way

Was Caps owner Leonsis being too cheap in not paying him what he wanted? Or will Caps do fine with Trotz's assistant ?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

BT was asking for five years and I think the caps thought that no coach is worth 5 years of top money. I think I agree with them.

And I think there was generally bad vibes between the two parties since the team never really seemed to be totally bought into him once GMGM left.

And they're fine with the asst guy Todd something.

tobo73, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

the coach's salary doesn't count against the cap right?

the bhagwanadook (symsymsym), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:09 (five years ago) link

it does not

i believe trotz was the previous general manager's hire, and he was underpaid by the standards of such things. he took the opportunity to exit while his stock was high as a cup-winner and the caps didn't really seem bothered to stop him

it's kind of weird, and putting a rookie coach in charge of a successful veteran team may or may not work, but hey, they just won their first cup two weeks ago. worry about this stuff in three months imo

mookieproof, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:19 (five years ago) link

Leonsis can prob afford to pay the big bucks

the bhagwanadook (symsymsym), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:27 (five years ago) link

i dont think the big bucks are necessarily the problem, it's the long-term deal that is. They don't want to be committing to pay a dude huge money when maybe ovechkin and backstrom and holtby are gone in a few years and who knows what will be going on. i am inclined to agree that BT doesn't justify that committment.

tobo73, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:35 (five years ago) link

hockey coaches -- even the successful ones -- seem to have pretty short shelf lives with individual teams. can't recall anyone getting a deal of that length except for babcock, and it remains to be seen how that turns out. so yeah

mookieproof, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:43 (five years ago) link

On that note, Wings are bringing in Dan Bylsma as an assistant. I bet he gets the full job within a year or two if things don't pick up.
