With the new series 'Opening New Doors' just released to Netflix, it's time this beacon of Japanese reality television got its own home on ILX.

Post your screenshots, Ryota Yamasato quotes and heartbreak over Hansan here...

OMG. I forgot it was starting now. This and the British Bakeoff are the absolute best before bed shows to watch ever. Not a care in the world.

Yerac, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link

I love how handsy Yu and Torichan get while watching the show.

Yerac, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 13:08 (six years ago) link

It's there! And who knows how many times the season will be extended this time? That alone is a phenomenon I've never encountered in TV before.

I hope Yu and Torichan are close outside the show too. Torichan is even dressed a bit like her in this first episode. Got to try and pace myself somehow...

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 13:13 (six years ago) link

I watched the first episode two months back (found it online). I may have to rewatch, I can barely remember. Controversial opinion. I don't understand why everyone liked Minori's sister. I was always meh on both of them.

Yerac, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 13:17 (six years ago) link

The stuffed pandas from the first episode killed me.

I adored Minori on account of her apathy and anti-socialness and of course for writing 'coward' on the rice, which I think might be the most incredible way to attack someone I've ever seen. Her sister didn't amaze me like she seemed to a lot of people.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 13:42 (six years ago) link

First thing I've learnt from this series: 'hot pot sergeant' appears to be a thing.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 17:56 (six years ago) link

Konbanwa.

I'll try to catch an episode tonight. I'm glad it's back in Japan.

jmm, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

I wasn't crazy about Minori at first but she grew on me, especially for how she handled Natsumi. She really knew how to push her buttons but kind of played it off like it was a misunderstanding due to their personal differences and an example of how they should not have to change for others but be more accepting of their differences.

I wouldn't say her sister was amazing but she seemed down-to-earth, straight forward and likable. I don't really remember but I feel like maybe she said some good things about other cast mates, like what an overbearing jackass Tap was being?

MrDasher, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 21:32 (six years ago) link

I think the sister was also popular due to being something of an audience stand-in.

MrDasher, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 23:59 (six years ago) link

I say this as a huge TH stan, but if you can find a way to watch the original 2 year season ("Terrace House - Boys & Girls Next Door"), please do so as it is the best season and it's something like 90-95 eps.

This new season (which I'm watching ahead of the international release) has a HUGE plot twist around week 10. Must resist giving away spoilers!!!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:01 (six years ago) link

Also... due to my wife's fandom I had a chance to chat with Mizuki (from Boys & Girls In The City) at her coffee shop in Omotesando, she's a huge NBA fan (GS Warriors) and makes an amazing latte.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:04 (six years ago) link

Ugh, I really doubt that I will be able to find a version with english subtitles (for the original series) but I'll still look this weekend. I love Mizuki.

@Yerac this goes to ep55, more than halfway through the entire run:

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:17 (six years ago) link

... but oh shit! there's also the new season on there too with huge spoilers in the thumbnails... proceed with extreme caution!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:18 (six years ago) link

OMG. Thank you! Sometimes I just wish I would get some non-threatening case of mono or pneumonia so I can lay in bed and watch all of these without interruption.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:21 (six years ago) link

I literally only started watching it as a lark because I was living in Oahu for 5 months last year and was missing Hawaii. I've gotten so many people hooked. It's hard to convince some people though that the series in Japan locales are far superior.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:24 (six years ago) link

Dang, jealous of your O'ahu residency... but yeah Aloha State is the worst season by far. I met Avian when she was a kid at her mom's shop lol.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:31 (six years ago) link

First thing I've learnt from this series: 'hot pot sergeant' appears to be a thing.

Yes, two people have said it independently so far! Excellent phrase.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:32 (six years ago) link

It's weird to watch Aloha State before other seasons. Like, they don't explain the premise of people being "pre-planned" to leave and new arrivals. I was so anti-Lauren at first because she bailed and was a model that rarely worked until I realized that having models on there is a characteristic of the show. I kind of feel like she was too American for the show though. I have dreams about Oahu every month. Besides the creeping anxiety of a NK attack, living there was the best. I could die there.

I don't know what this hot pot sergeant is. We had an electric wok growing up that we would do shabu shabu/sukiyaki once a week. Assuming it's that?

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:48 (six years ago) link

Oh, I finally found it while googling. That is a good phrase. I wish I had an electric wok.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:51 (six years ago) link

Didn't a few people leave and get replaced before Lauren, though?
Mizuki was another of my favorites. I liked Lauren too. I guess there were very few members I disliked, and even then it wasn't really strong dislike.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:58 (six years ago) link

I think only Uke left before her. I love her now for all her awkwardness. And she is the most model-y. I actively disliked Cheri. There were some that I found boring or just a bad fit but I didn't dislike them.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:01 (six years ago) link

I think I was confused about people being labeled "models". But I watched Tokyo idols and was in Japan for 3 weeks and then it all made sense.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:03 (six years ago) link

I think Naomi and Eric also left before Lauren.
Pushiness is one of my least favorite qualities in reality show personalities, so I was more put off by Anna (with her needling Avian about Yuya) and some of Taishi's moments, but I didn't dislike them. Some of the members seemed to not do much, or not much the producers wanted to show.
On Boys and Girls in the City, Tap and Natsumi bugged me, but they also had their more sympathetic and likable moments.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:11 (six years ago) link

Aloha State's main problem was that the Japanese natives could only stay so long in Hawaii before their visas ran out so you were stuck with a bunch of unlikeable castings of hapas & hafus incessantly pumping their brand. The end of Aloha State (Cheri/Wez/Anna & Eric's returns) was such a complete slog of pointless drama...

...except the last dude with the hazel eyes who was barely there for a minute who took a trip to the big island to tour that hippy Kona coffee plantation, that was so awesome and I wish they had just done things like that the whole time.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:26 (six years ago) link

The timing seemed off. Some of those people were barely there.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:33 (six years ago) link

And I had totally forgotten about Naomi. Eric I never understood why he was cast. Too sunburnt and tired for living in Hawaii full time. Anna was just an interesting, smiley mess. Ugh, so many blah people on Aloha comparatively. (Wez LOL!) The only thing that saved it was the scenery, Guy, the hosts making fun of Guy and the unlikely pairing of Avian and Yuya (in that order).

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:37 (six years ago) link

I liked Natsumi, because she was kind of crazy/conflicted. Her being drunk kind of scared me...but only scared me if I was a japanese person.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:41 (six years ago) link

Oh gah, i meant to say Anna was an UN-interesting, smiley mess. I felt a little bad for her at the end with Wez.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:42 (six years ago) link

Something that isn't addressed enough: The panel makes this show and was the only reason I felt compelled to slog on with Aloha State. I have deep love for Tokui, You, Yama... I liked Tori & Baba more in the B&G Next Door/B&G In The City, seems like they're given a rough edit and less screen-time in the past two series.

Also: If you guys didn't know this, you can simultaneously watch the panel's LIVE COMMENTARY (almost like a director's cut) on the JP Netflix site and it's even more hilarious (sometimes the editors will cue back to it for the benefit of the folks who don't watch it that way). There's also tons of BTS clips on the TH Youtube channel (which is region locked so you need a VPN).

Natsumi was kinda crazy, she was a drinker but there are a ton of folks on TH who enjoyed alcohol without starting fights that had to be broken up by the production crew.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:47 (six years ago) link

I kind of identified the most with Natsumi. Something about her inability to filter herself and how she instantly turns hostile when she feels like she's been slighted. That was the funnest stretch of the show.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:56 (six years ago) link

I could relate so much to Minori's reaction to Natsumi. I hate being around that kind of person. Minori ended up handling it way better than I would have though.
Totally agree about the panel.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:01 (six years ago) link

The fact that one of the first points of drama in the new season is about whether a breakfast soup is too flavourless is perfect Terrace House.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:11 (six years ago) link

In real life I would never be friends with Natsumi, but for tv she had a very strange combination of being early 20s scary, not subtle, slightly charming and too pretty to have to pull all that obvious shit while being Japanese! Her interactions with Minori were the only things to make me like Minori more. Ugh, I know why they can't but I really wish there was only one version of netflix. My version is bonkers. Some shows I can't get english subtitles and some all of a sudden switch overdubs when a season flips.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:13 (six years ago) link

Those three!!!... were all kind of terrible in their own way, but better than most of Aloha.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:15 (six years ago) link

what's the deal with people being models? A Japanese thing?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:15 (six years ago) link

I don't fully understand it. A lot may be just weird reality show/unemployed/aspirational/attractive person labeling. But Japan has an idol culture that is unique and is tangential. Google it. I kind of hate what it represents but if it keeps lonely, insecure men from doing bad shit, great.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:25 (six years ago) link

ah yes, ok. I heard about this idols thing.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

Seeing Riko go through the process of it was interesting. It got very real at one point when we see her in tears after a photo session.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

Wow, this thread took off while I was asleep!

I’m four episodes in to the new season so far and have a few predictions in the way of big twists, but I would be equally happy if it just turned out to be that Yuudai can finally make a flavoursome-enough mizutaki.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:09 (six years ago) link

That picture upthread is a tableau I would want on my wall.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:10 (six years ago) link

I figured they often have models in because a) people like watching attractive people on TV, and b) models are likely to benefit professionally from a show like this. But is there a hidden reason I’m missing? There are also a ton of people there ‘starting a brand’, which is usually snuck in the narrative around their third day of being there.

Albert R. Broccoli seems to have the inside scoop! So cool that you’ve actually met some of them haha. Also I had no idea producers got involved with a Natsumi fight!

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:15 (six years ago) link

I think it's also me being a jerk where I am stuck on western ideas of runway or editorial models. I was critical of Minori being a model and really wanted her to pick a more interesting thing to do.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 11:26 (six years ago) link

I got the sense that Minori was more like a fashion model whereas Riko was an idol. Minori seemed to be doing mainly fashion shoots, while for Riko the fandom aspect was fundamental.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 15:15 (six years ago) link

I don't want to get all Tyra here but it was having to rethink the models as ones doing catalogue, print ads or hostess type of work instead of runway/high fashion. But I don't read asian magazines so maybe they were high fashion? Riko made me sad. She seemed very smart and it all just ended poorly on the show.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

Minori just got married to Keigo Uetake (a streetwear designer dude) over the holidays:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BfVYYRIBQ9A/ (keep swiping to see pics)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:10 (six years ago) link

Riko was a gravure idol which is kind of like a "sexy-cute" bikini model, totally different uh... target market than a runway model. The exposure of the depth of the Riko/Hayato affair was one of the highlights of the Tokyo series imho. The editing around the dinner table catching their glances once the group let them know the jig was up was priceless!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:20 (six years ago) link

Also I had no idea producers got involved with a Natsumi fight!

― tangenttangent, Wednesday, March 14, 2018 2:15 AM (nine hours ago)

Yeah, they mentioned either on the commentary or alluded to the panel discussion where the directors/editors made the call NOT to show the fight between Misaki and Natsumi because it could have negative effect on Natsumi's career. But yeah, they said it got pretty savage and that all the guys and crew had to get involved!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:23 (six years ago) link

xpost Not talking about Riko being a model (sorry that was unclear) but all the other women, Minori, Natsumi, Lauren etc.

I enjoyed the discovery of the affair at the end but still was kind of sad. Hayato was shady shady. I liked how at the very beginning the other women thought he was gross.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

Hayato seemed like a creep. I loved Ryota Yamasato's comment about him on his first episode.
I am curious about if any TH couples are still together.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

That was a crazy twist. I remember after the yukata date having the feeling that there was something not right about how they were interacting.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link

Also Riko's Mom knew all along, so if you watch knowing that, it's super apparent and pretty funny. I think Hayato is not as terrible as people make him out to be, and if you follow along with the alumni, he's super popular with both all the guys & gals and apparently still a pretty good chef according to friends.

Minori does runway & print, Natsumi does TV & print, Lauren does tons of print work, she was all over on my last trip.

One edit about Lauren that didn't make it out was that she spent every summer in high school doing modeling (print) in Tokyo. I think her edit just made it seem like she had only done a foreign exchange semester abroad in Hiroshima.

The first series in Shonan (B&G Next Door) has some legit models, actors, musicians, talent, athletes & entertainers, much higher profile than any of the subsequent seasons.

This season is kind of crazy... A lot of weird tensions flying around and reactions that just seem off-kilter. I thought I had some decent predictions lined up but now I’m not so sure... Money’s on something dramatic happening with either Yuudai or Tsubasa though. My OWN money that is.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:39 (six years ago) link

The whole show or the presenters? I’m sure either way it’s a fair comment in some regards.

Always knew there was more to that Natsumi/Misaki fight. Misaki seemed terrified for a while afterwards until Byrnes arrived on the scene, aaww. It would be nice if they stayed together! Minori and her new husband look very sweet together.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:43 (six years ago) link

That must be hard. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum. I should really be writing an essay this week anyway...

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:45 (six years ago) link

My spouse (and houseguest) walked in and I was watching Greatest Homes or whatever that new show is called, and he saw the reflection in the window and started chastising me for watching TH without him. He just saw people sitting down in a living room and thought it was the new one.

Minori's and new husband look great/happy in the pics.

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:53 (six years ago) link

Do the producers of the show prod people to leave if they get boring or is it really strictly up to the person?

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:56 (six years ago) link

Arman never leaving should answer that. :D

what's the status of homosexuality in Japan? an equivalent show in the UK would definitely have homosexual or bisexual participants. to be honest I find the gay element in UK TV now to be too much, especially in soap operas and reality shows. I am actually interested by the lack of them, it's a relief.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 16 March 2018 02:46 (six years ago) link

i could just google that but i feel like i wouldn't be particularly enlightened.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 16 March 2018 02:50 (six years ago) link

Perfectly countered.

I did like Arman eventually, he was just coasting by doing nothing significantly entertaining for months and didn't have a care in the world about it. It's always perfect when the presenters get up in arms about providing free accommodation for someone who isn't pulling their weight.

tangenttangent, Friday, 16 March 2018 19:48 (six years ago) link

The thing about Arman's edit that was perhaps unfair to him was that when Arman was leaving LocoMart (the gardening center in Kamakura) the honcho said that he was the hardest working TH member who'd ever worked for him. The panel who'd been giving him a hard time took back all the things they said about him being a slacker as it recast him in a different light coming from a successful business leader (with good reason, the crew probably couldn't make the trip from HigashiGotanda to Kamakura every shift).

Arman has gone behind the camera and is doing a lot of work in video production in Hawaii and Japan. It's vague whether he's still with Martha or not.

||||||||, Thursday, 22 March 2018 11:08 (six years ago) link

why do the panellists continually hold their hands up over their mouths ? mostly when laughing, but sometimes when speaking too. is it a modesty thing? or are they embarrassed by their teeth ? I thought it was just the women who do it but I've noticed yokui doing it too

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 19:33 (six years ago) link

Only the Tokyo panelists do, you'll notice the Kansai ones don't (Baba-chan & Tokui). It's a regional thing.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

that's interesting. I thought yokui was from kansai? I thought I'd picked up on that when they were doing all the (very opaque) riffing on natsumi's accent

also why is tsubasa so lovely

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 19:40 (six years ago) link

Tokui does a lot of impressions of the team members, maybe that's why? He has a distinguishable Kyoto accent and Babachan has a thick Osaka accent. When they laugh, they show their tongue and inside of their mouth which most stereotypical Tokyo people think is uncivilized.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 20:00 (six years ago) link

The new season Tsubasa and Taka-san have these crazy mountain accents and speak in dialect to each other that's pretty country but cool. I think the panel made fun of Taka and his bro's radio station where they speak almost exclusively in dialect.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 20:01 (six years ago) link

thanks. all the kansai accent ribbing directed at natsumi in the first series was fully impenetrable to me (still absolutely hilarious for some reason) (I guess regional accent ribbing is universal, and there are archetypes across the world even if you don't know the specific specifics in question)

I've watched S02E10 now and don't really get the significance of the twist but I gather things might get /interesting/ now

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link

Are y'all going to be talking about stuff that isn't on Netflix yet? Not sure whether to avoid the thread.

jmm, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link

I don't think we should. as soon as it's up on netflix, it's fair game. sorry, I tried to keep my ref oblique (someone had already referred to it upthread as 'a twist')

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link

So what was the deal with Cheri anyway? Was she just partying way too hard and flipped out?

Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:58 (six years ago) link

I won't post any spoilers for the new season, but I can't make any promises about the earlier seasons!

Cheri slowly melted down into an alcoholic haze until she was confronted about a few things and then got incredibly defensive (and offensive to Mariko). Pretty immature and trashy for your typical TH member. She's also a Trump supporter and 2nd ammendment nut.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:32 (six years ago) link

OMG, are you kidding me. I saw that after the show she still won Miss Ala Moana and was surprised. She kind of had hard drug bloat/paralysis going on with her face that I had no clue what was going on.

Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:34 (six years ago) link

I always get jolted when I meet a Hawaiian Trump supporter (early last year). But the whole sovereignty/ religious thing it kind of made sense.

Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

Yeah, her voice became more and more gravelly as well... Hopefully she detoxed.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:38 (six years ago) link

I'm watching those exact Cheri episodes now, and they're interesting to watch knowing all of that. It seems like the alcohol problem is being constantly alluded to without ever being explicitly mentioned (Wez: "I think we all need to be more honest.") The confrontation with Mariko and Taishi seems to come out of nowhere. They're fighting about these secondary issues of who said what to whom, without ever getting at the real problem. Maybe they didn't feel they could do it on camera.

Apologies, but can someone explain "breakup caused by meat!"? is it related to hamburg steak?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 13 April 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

It's from an incident in Boys and Girls in the City. Uchi is given some expensive wagyu beef by one of his clients. His girlfriend Minori doesn't realize how important this is to him, and she and the other housemates cook it up without asking his permission. He gets very upset with her. The presenters thinks that breaking up over meat is the funniest thing ever.

three weeks pass...

New episodes up. Can we talk about this yet? The vibe has totally changed for the better!

Yerac, Friday, 25 May 2018 13:04 (five years ago) link

I just started the new ones.
Ami is kind of a drain, eh.
But I think I would find Seina overbearing.

MrDasher, Saturday, 26 May 2018 01:03 (five years ago) link

I am also in the middle of watching the very first season of TH so it's weird to simultaneously see the 5 years apart Seina at the same time.

Two things I really laughed at. When Tsubasa? said "hide" when the new person showed up. (I don't know why this made me laugh). And when Seina is asked if she is interested in wine and she said it is her only interest. I kind of want that in a gif.

Yerac, Saturday, 26 May 2018 01:09 (five years ago) link

There aren't very many new episodes! I am about halfway through them.
Seina seems more low key than she did on her first episode and on her appearances on Boys and Girls in the City and Aloha State. The way they have talked about her make her seem like some kind of troublemaker, but that doesn't seem to be th case? And they even said she doesn't fight with other women, which is a relief. What was her deal on her other seasons and the movie?
Regarding Yuudai, I did feel kind of bad for him. He seemed so hapless and I can relate to his avoidant personality, But I don't think I can fault the others for how they were to him. He must have been so annoying and frustrating to deal with, and they probably thought he was just immature, inconsiderate, and oblivious. If there is more to it, I don't think they saw it. It's not really that clear what was going on with him.
Ami doesn't seem to have great social skills, and is maybe kind of oblivious herself, but it was a little obscured by Yuudai's issues. They probably just made each other worse.
I don't really get Tsubasa and Shion.

MrDasher, Saturday, 26 May 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

I am only 30 episodes into the first season ( think it goes on for like 80 epis and the movie) and Seina is totally fine and nice on the show. I think she is just very motivating I think Albert may know more.

Yuudai drove me crazy. I am so glad he's gone although I liked to be bewildered by his laziness and excuses (his conversations with his ex and friends were so cringeworthy.)

As RuPaul would say, Ami rests on being pretty and isn't willing to put in effort.

Yerac, Saturday, 26 May 2018 16:41 (five years ago) link

Yes, Ami seems to expect a lot from others while doing nothing herself.

MrDasher, Saturday, 26 May 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

Maybe Seina was right about the three days, because she has really grown on me. I found her appearances on the prior two seasons kind of off-putting, because she seemed like a busybody, grating, and kind of full of herself. Also, on her first episode here she was like a Real Housewife compared to these other people, but she has really toned it down.
Anyway, I am actually finding her defense of Ami convincing.

MrDasher, Sunday, 27 May 2018 04:34 (five years ago) link

I admire how she told Tsubasa that women shouldn't think/talk about themselves that way, after Tsubasa was implying she wasn't worthy of Shion. I don't get Shion at all. I wonder what the gap is between what is filmed and what they watch on this season. They haven't shown them watching episodes of themselves yet?

Yerac, Sunday, 27 May 2018 17:13 (five years ago) link

Seina has a reputation for drinking lots of wine, being 「トレンドー」 (literally "trendy" but meaning playfully dramatic), drinking lots of wine, playing cupid (or "kewpie"), drinking lots of wine, passing along relationship intel, & drinking lots of wine. She's awesome, she's essentially the heart and soul of the TH franchise (can't say too much for fear of spoilers).

S3 of Opening New Doors gets really good, that's all I'm gonna say.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 18:39 (five years ago) link

When it's all said and done, I think the biggest takeaway from TH for me will be watching someone make a soft scramble and being astounded that they squirted a couple of globs of Kewpie into the eggs. I do it all the time now and let me just tell you: it has made all the difference.

I can't watch the next part until imago is back. The suspense is too much! I really hope they put the original series up at some point too. I've looked around for one with subtitles but I don't think it exists.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 9 August 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link

I am glad the app guy drives everyone else crazy too. Such a creepster.

I was a little surprised how long the lag time is from when they are seeing episodes of themselves. In earlier seasons it felt like 2-3 weeks? Now it's about 2 months?

Yerac, Tuesday, 25 December 2018 02:07 (five years ago) link

I like Tsubasa and Shion a lot, but the show got better and more interesting to me after they left.
I guess like You I got used to the app guy and no longer mind him.
The panel gave Tokui a hard time for being too excited and enthusiastic about Yui’s virginity, which is understandable, but I was kind of grossed out by their general reaction to her supposed innocence and cuteness. Then they held it against her when she didn’t live up to their imagined version of her.
The panel seemed pretty quick to label people and moments “scary” this year.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

Didn't they think Natsumi, Cheri and Hayato were scary? In the first 5 minutes that the app guy was on screen I said "he's so going to stab someone in their sleep." I had to look up what a Junon boy was (lol).

Thank goodness Taka finally left. He was the most attractive, boring person ever on that show. His lady friend seems perfect for him.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link

idk about Season One being bad - it's sort of amazing! i really don't think TH has been gifted a scenario as rich as failed firefighter and actual popstar's forbidden romance while avuncular older pair are the two actually getting down to it on the sly. even the two fifth wheels are good fun

imago, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:01 (five years ago) link

Oh, I don't think it's bad. The music was a bit disconcerting and I kept waiting for the panel breaks so it was harder to get into a rhythm. I am somewhere in the mid teens in the episodes.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:06 (five years ago) link

Natsumi and Cheri seemed more aggressive to me, whereas the "scary" moments the current season seem more the result of social awkwardness and the apparent lack of social skills of a number of the members.
I was rooting for Taka though he made me cringe on a number of occasions.
I really like Yui.
I am not into watching these people skating, surfing, singing, so I might prefer the people who do "nothing" or whose jobs are not considered interesting/cool.
I would like to watch the first season but think I will miss the panel a lot.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

there may be a panel at some point. The first season goes on for 2 years or something.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:21 (five years ago) link

I posted it upthread but yes, Boys & Girls Next Door is by far the best season (followed closely by BGitC). It spans two years, two houses & two dozen housemates... and yes, there's a panel for the majority of it.

And then... once the series ends, it dovetails straight into a 2 hour film sequel (Closing Doors).

But back to Opening New Doors, I'm not sure if it's in the current international release or the next one, but during the opening recap Yamasato gets really OTT faux-angry at app-bro and it's probably my favorite moment of the entire series thus far.

It's not *that* crazy of a commute by bullet train... esp compared to the season 1 commute which was perhaps a little longer?

I have to say I was thrilled that the panel was begging for an eyeglass date because that is exactly how I felt.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:01 (five years ago) link

The fact that they’re watching the episodes back a couple of days later in season 1 must have been seriously psychologically detrimental. Like in the new seasons they have a buffer of a few weeks to forget about and get over things and to review arguments from a humorous distance. The old way seems completely brutal in its immediacy.

It’s interesting to see Seina’s early missteps in modelling, knowing how successful she later becomes. Her fallibility makes her even more likeable.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

Maybe I will try to watch the first season but I am kind of bad at watching tv so we'll see.
I love that people on Terrace House watch Terrace House and talk about being on Terrace House. I don't on like US reality shows when they can't mention the show even when it's clearly what they're really talking about.
I am curious about the status of some of the couples from other seasons, lke Taishi and Chikako.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:36 (five years ago) link

I want to know too! That couple seemed doomed tbh. Albert is a fountain of knowledge for this kind of thing.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

Taishi & Chikako are still together (now married!) & vlogging:

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UChJTlso_SVU_R-v6VaX995w/videos?shelf_id=1&view=0&sort=dd

For older seasons, Franky & Andrew (non-TH member) are married. Not sure about Han-san.

For newer seasons: Tsubasa & Shion and Seina & Noah.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 27 December 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

Interesting. I was wondering how that would go, because Taishi seemed like he could be all about the fantasy and not the reality, or be one of those guys who gets super enthusiastic about a person/relationship, then abruptly becomes disillusioned and drops them. Maybe once he was secure in the relationship he relaxed, because on the show he seemed to put a lot of expectations on the person he was with, as to how she should react to things he did and so on...and just seemed kind of exhausting...well, good for them, I guess.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

Married! I don't know why I am so surprised, he seemed pretty focused. 18ish years ago we had a Japanese housemate from Kyushu (mentioned before) for two years while he was doing a postdoc and he randomly had a school friend come visit him where we lived in nowhere PA. Completely normal, basic visit. He went back to Japan after he finished up and they were married within 3 months.

Also if you like baseball (probably no one on this thread), Kenta Maeda (LA Dodgers pitcher) was the guest panelist on today's episode and he said that his wife went to a Halloween party in LA and Taishi (Guilty Samuria) was there and she took a picture with him and sent it to Maeda (who was pitching in the world series!) and he checked his phone and got super excited lollll

i started this show a couple months ago (Boys & Girls in the City, via netflix) and i watch ultra-slowly, so i'm only up to episode 15.

i will say that episode 14, the one where uchi and minori kiss for the first time, was possibly the finest half an hour of television i have ever seen. it was like nathan for you levels of awkwardness, only real, but sort of not real. unbelievable. i watched half of the episode with hands over my eyes.

I think for this season they want to capture the energy of the upcoming Olympics.

I have to point out the whole franchise started in Shonan which is several large regions/municipalities away from Tokyo, but definitely commutable. Another thing is I think there has only been a few Osaka cast members (& nobody from Kyoto iirc).

Now that Taishi & Chikako have called it quits (+ Frankie & her husband from BGND got divorced!), I think the only two on-screen couples still involved are the highly unlikely Yui/Aio & Seina/Noah from OND.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 17 September 2019 09:10 (four years ago) link

International licensing. Its why there's a delay in the release in Japan vs the rest of world: editors scrub all the music out & replace it with generic youtube pop/rock.

Utterly addicted to this show after a couple friends recommended it. My wife and I blew through the Tokyo episodes on NF in less than a week and had to find the newest ones as there's no way I could live with that cliffhanger for two months. I think part 3 has probably been the most interesting of this season so far, and I love the advice-giving castmate mentioned above

What do you all recommend for the next season of TH to watch? I imagine this was probably discussed before but I'm a little scared to read spoilers of prev seasons

Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link

Start at the beginning (which is a total hassle because it's not on NF incl. Japan) but it is not only the best season but the panel constantly refers back to the original series. There's also a 2 hour film "Closing Door" that takes place immediately after season 1 ends which is pretty good. But yeah chronological is a good start. In my opinion this current series is the best of the past 3. I'd rank them:

BGND + Closing Door
BGiTC
Tokyo 19-20
OND
AS

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:38 (four years ago) link

ugh, I STILL have not finished the original TH. It's hard to pick it back up. Netflix needs to purchase it.

Yerac, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 19:44 (four years ago) link

Ok I'll look for that, thanks. I don't know if this is common among TH fans but we started skipping the panel segments after 6 episodes or so. It was a combo of the panel making a bunch of references to prev seasons we didn't understand + we became impatient to get back to the action + we occasionally found the panel boring. But I'm regretting that a little (especially after one moment this season where a castmate is affected by the panel's thoughts when that castmate watches the show) and I'll probably go back and rewatch their thoughts on key moments

Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:43 (four years ago) link

when i first started watching (I started with Aloha State) I was skipping the panel because I didn't get them. But seriously...they are probably the best part of the show. Start watching tham all.

Yerac, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:45 (four years ago) link

Yeah as Carey says: once you realize the panel is the best part of the show you will regret that later. Plus a lot of alumni show up (and rejoin as cast, some several times!)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:49 (four years ago) link

And not to say the current season is "bad" necessarily, it's just that TH has become a huge vehicle for the castmembers so there is a lot of kayfabe going on (you learn a lot about this towards the end of BGitC), whereas in BGND (my abs. fave), the vibe/action is much more pure.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:51 (four years ago) link

The degree of kayfabe (I had to look this word up, btw - useful word) in the show is another thing I am very curious about. There was a moment in a episode where a character outside the house was surprised at hearing some news, but then, there was a camera set up so obviously they knew something was going on. There's some other small important moments in the house that are caught on camera and I have to wonder if it's serendipitous or whether anything is restaged. Overall, the producers do a good job of making things seem real/natural. But again, don't really want to go looking for articles that reveal the nuts and bolts and then spoil earlier stuff for myself!

Vinnie, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 00:34 (four years ago) link

I did not know this word either. Was it Lauren Tsai that talked about how only a couple of hours were filmed each day?

Yerac, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:10 (four years ago) link

That wouldn't surprise me. Seems almost all recordings in the house are done in the morning or at night, when everyone is around. And the cameras sometimes track people as they move inside the house so a director/crew must be working live at those times? I imagine no matter how "real" this show is, it must be a nightmare to film and edit

Vinnie, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:39 (four years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Assuming this thread can act as a catch-all for Japanese reality television, it seems right to announce here that the new Ainori Love Wagon: African Journey is now up on Netflix! We watched most of it elsewhere - just three episodes remain. It is as harrowing and compelling as ever.

JFC that was the most harrowing episode ever. There's no way the rest of the house will be the same from here on out.

...worse than the Cheri blow-up in Aloha State, worse than the Misaki-Natsumi fight in BGitC, with just some added dread & anxiety & just sheer cringe.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 04:17 (four years ago) link

I haven't seen the last couple episodes of the Tokyo season, but I did want to thank you Al for recommending the BGND season, which was indeed hard to find but has been a godsend in these stressful times. We watched about 5 episodes a night, finishing with Closing Door yesterday, and it blows the Tokyo season away. Just seems a matter of good fortune/good casting that several of the initial group end up with such strong connections with each other, that it set the tone for the house the whole series. I think it's evidenced by the fact that former cast members visit back a lot - their bonds seem much stronger than the friendships in the newest season. Of course, it was also a much longer period of time. Tecchan's journey in particular was also really great to watch

Yerac, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 00:49 (four years ago) link

Agree that it was really difficult to find the last few episodes of the first season, but we managed in the end. Tecchan was one of the all-time housemates.

New season part up, hooray! I have no idea if the allusions ARB is making will reveal themselves in this part or next? It showed up as a next play after finishing Sion Sono's 'Forest of Love', which was...ominous?

ban laggy jazzer (imago), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 21:12 (four years ago) link

Episode 38 is the one that was very dark and super negative. Episode 39 aired yesterday and was much better. The new housemate is a throwback (in many ways) to the original vibe of BGND.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 21:38 (four years ago) link

The stuff we're mentioning will be part 4, but part 3 was very engrossing!

Was the new housemate in 39 ever featured incidentally in a previous season? Seems like he might have been, given his ties to previous cast. Yes, the tribute in the last ep was nice. I hadn't even known he died until I started looking up the BGND cast to see what they're doing now. Seems like Oji had the highest-profile career of the bunch!

Vinnie, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 02:13 (four years ago) link

Also, I noticed that a couple housemates in the last episode wore masks inside without mentioning being sick and I'm wondering if we're running into when they would have been aware of COVID...

Vinnie, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 02:15 (four years ago) link

They've filmed at least a month more, based on people who saw the cast still filming scenes outside the house in mid-March, but I guess we won't see it. I expect this season will not continue even after they can film again. Shame, because I liked the direction things were going in episode 40

apparently Kai had 'stans'

I'm not going to post precisely what I want to post because I'd be doing exactly what they did in the other direction, and I don't think Kai is in a particularly happy or secure place himself, but it really doesn't surprise me that (given they existed, which is itself fairly shocking to me) his fans, taking into account his comedic style, would have been viciously toxic

― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, March 30, 2020 8:50 PM (one month ago)

I just can't see the series going on from this, the whole format, the whole loss of innocence, the whole kayfabe/reality balance which was just delicate enough to begin with, now collapsing in today's social media dominated society.

One thing that gives me a little comfort is the Another Terrace (Behind The Scenes) clips from that episode where her housemates were trying to help Hana through her anger. It left me with a little more hope.

But yeah, I just can't see how the show could ever recover from this. Gah. RIP Hana.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 May 2020 15:09 (three years ago) link

well, the show was about to wrap for an undetermined amount of time anyway...

re: kai stans - if i were to guess, there’s probably a healthy bit of toxic guys that didn’t like a strong, forceful woman in the mix too

this is all so sad

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Saturday, 23 May 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

Yeah, sorry for not being clear, I mean like the entirety of the Terrace House franchise will not be able to recover from this.

If you compare the Hana x Kai drama to an early conflict: Misaki & Natsumi in BGitC. It was revealed that the producers/editors made a conscious decision to edit their fight off the show, because it was so ugly and it could possibly have an effect on both talent's careers.

But then Aloha State happened which led to the combination of Cheri/Wez/Taishi that the producers/editors allowed us to view pure toxicity.

But the Kai x Hana episode was just soooo terrible on all sides, just a bitter stain that would be unlikely to wash away. What was once marketed as a boring, innocent, or however else the show was targeted to the West... that show is long gone.

Oh well, I strongly recommend people hunting down BGND, I feel like that was the pure essence of the franchise, where things were less contrived.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 May 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

Without having seen the other seasons except BGND, I agree this casts doubt on the premise of the show being a good idea
