C/D? Children's Lemonade Stands

Just today I walked through my neighborhood past two of these, operated by pairs of bored or semi-desperate youngsters. I estimated them to be about 11-year old boys in the first case, and two sisters, about 6 and 8 (accompanied by dad in a lawn chair) in the second. The stands were within about 100 yards of one another.

I vaguely recall attempting this ploy exactly once, being bored spitless, making just about one sale before giving up forever. This raises several questions in my mind:

  • Did you ever try this yourself when young?
  • Did you get more than a couple of sales before giving up?
  • Did you learn anything of value from it?
  • Would any kid ever think of doing this, if the comic strips didn't keep this stale meme alive year after year?
  • As an adult, do you ever stop and buy a lemonade to encourage their budding entrepreneurial spirit?
  • Do you even carry the right small change to be able to buy it if you wanted to?

Surely kids today can accept venmo?

Did you ever try this yourself when young?

-Yes, for an hour, with some older friends and my brother.

Did you get more than a couple of sales before giving up?

-No, I mostly just screamed insults at oncoming cars that didn't stop and was so annoying that I got told by the older kid in charge to go back to the house. after which the money came pouring in.

Did you learn anything of value from it?

-That I had anger management issues

Would any kid ever think of doing this, if the comic strips didn't keep this stale meme alive year after year?
-do kids today really read comic strips (strips, not books, mind)

As an adult, do you ever stop and buy a lemonade to encourage their budding entrepreneurial spirit?
-fuck no

Do you even carry the right small change to be able to buy it if you wanted to?
-I don't carry change at all

Did you ever try this yourself when young?

Pretty sure I did, once or twice.

As an adult, do you ever stop and buy a lemonade to encourage their budding entrepreneurial spirit?

I have, yes.

Have you ever seen a movie that had a kid-selling-lemonade scene?

I added my own question there. Yes, saw one just the other day: Gus Van Sant's Promised Land. The scene had a symbolic point that I thought was made effectively but someone else might find awkwardly telegraphed.
