You want to believe in a host team brimming with talent, but choke potential is high
always root for france, to no avail. shanice van de sanden was fantastic in the champs lge final and is v fun to watch so would like to see the netherlands do well especially as van de donk is class as well.

feel like the nu-var era we are in where ref assistants can't flag for offside until the attacking phase is completed is changing the game in some fundamental way that i can't articulate but am uneasy with.

australia play with such a stupidly high line that every game they play will have like 5 var reviews.tbf all the initial decisions by the on field officials have been proved correct. i'd probably prefer the law to be if any of the attackers body is onside then they are onside rahter than if any of their body is offside then they're offside.

Not feeling sorry for them as much as I'm wondering why (how?) they're here at all. I think USA's display proves how fast women's football is developing. With a fast evolution, the margin between the highest standard and mediocrity is enormous. Germany (men) beat Estonia 8-0 tonight; same diff, but it happened in qualification.

seeing players go wild over scoring rout-number goals against obviously inferior opposition is weird but I feel like that's a matter of unspoken etiquette rather than anything more innate, and that you could make an only partway contrarian case for the polite smile and handshake to mark your ninth against minnows being the more arrogant gesture

is there supposed to be provision made for when a leg follows through after a clearance and connects w/ an opponent? feel like there isn't really but not dredging up any obvious comparable incidents rn
lot of ppl taking about a two-footed tackle by Torrent in the same incident, seemed like more of a block to me. still think a penalty is correct w/ the caveat of it being a bad advert for VAR all the same insofar as it reaffirms how many grey areas there are and always will be

thought france looked p good. norway did cause the odd problem on the flanks, i don't think the french full backs are particularly strong, but their CB pairing is great, not just renard but the #19 as well. diani had a spectacular first half down the right. not sure of the permeations of the draw but they looked solid last 4 prospects, although i didn't see either brasil's or england's opening games. wasn't that convinced by gauvin at CF but she did score.

Offside given about 20 seconds after Scotland player (2 yards onside) receives the ball. Japan go down the other end and ping it straight over the keeper’s head into the net, 1-0 Japan

The game plan seems to be long floated diagonals which the lone striker has no chance of reaching, combined with not clearing the ball properly.

Yeah, clinical stuff from Italy, but no way did that feel like a 5-0 game on the balance of play. Football, a cruel mistress etc. Hope Jamaica get a goal at least for their efforts, and against australia's dodge defence they might well.

― Blandford Forum, Wednesday, 19 June 2019 20:57 (four years ago) link
The use of VAR has been abysmal throughout and half the refs seem to have simply delegated all important decisions to video.
fwiw, I think that 16 out of 17 penalties have been awarded against sides outside the FIFA top ten rankings so idk if it’s going to continue at this absurd pace throughout.
― ShariVari, Wednesday, 19 June 2019 21:17 (four years ago) link
probably in a minority of one but i'm just about in favour of the new spot kick rule ( tho god knows how long a shootout is gonna last if we get one) given the 2 extremes of what the scotland keeper did last night a v slightly early frwd step being penalized and what keepers routinely got away with pre rule change ie jerzy dudek at istanbul i think the enforcement via var is just about better. tho tbh the lack of enforcement pre law change was willful incompetence anyway.

VAR makes it less likely that weaker teams get a lucky break, which is fine I guess, but in combination with the rule changes it also means that mistakes weaker teams might make (fluffed clearances, marginally skewed arms, keepers slightly off their lines at penalties etc) are punished with catastrophic consequences.

Basically no need whatsoever to go to VAR.
Players catch each other accidentally all the time. The test aiui is whether the conduct was either intentional, reckless or dangerous. What seems to have happened in this World Cup is a massive expansion in what is considered reckless / dangerous play.

Iirc per caek, referees completely make up the amount of added time
They probably won't do a 13 minute added time marathon in the immediate future because it would be embarrassing to VAR imo. It would damage confidence, in the sport, to see it,
― Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 24 June 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link
Sadly at work and can't watch this now. Don't think the decisions i've seen have been wrong, mostly, but VAR seems to encourage a pedantic emphasis on some types of infraction at the expense of context and any idea of intentionality. And it fucks with the flow of the game and encourages more dissent/nitpicking from the players. And the handball interpretation is just fucking silly now.
It's kinda messed up that this narrative has been allowed to dominate discussion of the actual football and i feel bad for falling into that too but it's aggravating and it does feel like it's operated in favour of the big teams more, no doubt cos they get fouled more iften but also because they're just better at gaming the rules as they stand.

― Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link
the additional time given at the end of a half of football (soccer) is called "injury time" or "added time". if the game ends in a draw (tie) and they play an extra 30 minutes of football (soccer) this is called "extra time" (this would be what is referred to as "overtime" in north american sporting parlance).
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

"context and any idea of intentionality" seems relevant wrt viewer/poster reactions as this tournament (as w/ world cups in general [also this is a net positive I should probably state]) has definitely hooked ppl who don't necessarily watch that much football
reading liveblogs etc which platform shouty dissenting voices for even the clearly correct decisions has a signal-to-noise effect as well I guess

It's not really overtime though. Stoppage time is meant to make up for time lost due to injuries, substitutions, goal celebrating, but is still considered part of the half it occurs in.
The correct analogue for overtime are those two extra 15 minute periods when the game is tied after regulation in a tournament match

i think the issue with VAR is that in football lots of stuff that technically is not allowed happens and we expect it to be allowed to happen. we applaud a referee who lets a game flow, we hate one who inserts themselves into the game too much. with VAR this expected refereeing of flow, subjectivity and feeling is crushed like a butterfly on a wheel

Just on a very basic level the inability to celebrate a goal without spending ages wondering if its even going to stand is just profoundly shit for the sport. And I'm saying this as someone whose team have benefited from it this season.
If they're going to use technology work on one that can be applied instantly or not at all.

― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:05 (four years ago) link
in baseball if the replay isn't clearly conclusive then the decision of the ump on the field stands, and that's an explicit part of the process. does it work that way with VAR?
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:07 (four years ago) link

― mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:13 (four years ago) link
VAR offside at least has a consistency to it but the England pen is a textbook example of where it doesn't work, you could watch those clips a million times and gain no certainty, just another layer of stupidly bad decision-making beyond the referee's
― Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:15 (four years ago) link
yeah that seems like a flaw. it needs to be clearly one way or the other, otherwise defer to the ref. most of the angles on that penalty looked like nothing, but the one from behind looked like the American ran straight into White's legs.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:20 (four years ago) link
still got a ways to go before you hit American football levels, where you watch a spectacular touchdown, then you nervously scan the field for flags, then you wait out a 5 minute review process to make sure the ball carrier performed an appropriate "football move", then you celebrate, though not too much or its 15 yards
― frogbs, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:22 (four years ago) link
It feels like you could devise some Hawkeye-ish offside tech that would be near instantaneous - if the Byzantine interference guidelines were dropped - and then just forget about the purely interpretive fouls/intention/contact nonsense

VAR in this tournament has been a fail. I like it in limited circumstances but what got me into soccer for the first time ten years ago was the flow of the game.
This interrupts it and there is a world of diff to me between noticing a player is a foot offside vs seeing their toe is a centimeter over

― John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:41 (four years ago) link
There was one VAR intervention every six games in Germany last season iirc. It doesn’t have to be intrusive. The biggest problems are policy related - always letting play go on unless the striker is about three feet offside, the terrible handball rule, the apparent decision to ban virtually any contact in the penalty area.

Tweetstorm iirc
VAR could be so simple, and great, if it deals with measurable, objectively detectable things in play: offside or not, goal over the line or not.
Now thought, it creates a Droste-effect: the ref doesn't know if it's a pen or not, so we go to the VAR that - big surprise - is also inconclusive. Leave those decisions up to the ref, don't VAR it. There'll be mistakes, but hey, the sport has survived those up till now. Part of the game.
The logical conclusion of leaving everything to VAR is to abolish football.

"VAR could be so simple, and great, if it deals with measurable, objectively detectable things in play: offside or not, goal over the line or not."
Goal over the line is measurable in a way offside is not. A player can look marginally on or off depending on the angle available. We are going to be looking at a mm here or there and shit is gonna blow.

My memory of VAR at the Men's World Cup was that it was heavily used during the group stages and less and less during the knockouts.
It's the uncertainty and waiting and faffing around that ruins everything - any evolution that kills or undermines the most basic unit of joy in a match feels insanely short sighted on behalf of the authorities. It's like it's been devised by people who have never watched football in a stadium.

If it doesn't stop the TV money coming in FIFA or whoever are not gonna care.

Indeed, the entire history of Association Football suggests otherwise.

Wasn't offside initially introduced to stop goal-hanging? The idea of policing every single call to the finest hair's breadth is extreme pedantry and will be the death of football. It can't work

it is kind of hilarious given how extremely relaxed refs are about touch-line calls, which as far as i know are not subject to VAR yet result in a change of possession and are presumably much easier to call

― Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 10:51 (four years ago) link

― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 10:53 (four years ago) link
I feel like the ball has to be about a foot out of bounds before it gets called and nobody ever really complains
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 10:54 (four years ago) link
Yes but that happens all the time, matches would last three hours if you had to use VAR for that!
― Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 10:56 (four years ago) link
Having said that, FIFA are stupid enough to do it.
why VAR the touchline when you could surround the pitch with spiked walls that gradually close in on the players over the 90 minutes?
― Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 10:57 (four years ago) link
Haha no I'm just saying that offside should be treated with the same level of "good enough"
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 11:00 (four years ago) link
Also I feel like the "challenge" system in tennis and baseball is useful in terms of limiting the number of times the game stops
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 11:01 (four years ago) link
offside "benefit of doubt goes to the attacking team" was tracer's "good enough" and always seemed okay to me. can honestly say that i've never been outraged when the team i support concedes a goal that tv later shows the scorer was offside by a few inches or smthg.
noodle nails it upthread that it isn't designed with stadium going fans in mind at all with the added bonus that it's crap for tv viewera too!

always amazing to me how, with the fate of nations riding on games, no one ever really knows how much time's left. eight minutes of added time? sure, why not. one side is pressing forward when that ends? we'll just let things go until they score or turn the ball over

inverse of this is Clive Thomas refereeing Brazil-Sweden in 1978 WC and electing to adhere to injury time so specifically as to blow the whistle exactly as a corner is headed in. love to see it
(also enjoying the "great protests from the Brazilians" in fact being the players looking a bit pissed off then walking off the pitch as normal)

Not stopping the clock and refusing to keep accurate time to add at the end is so ridiculous. It’s simple to track the exact amount of time play was stopped and display that time to the audience and players.
― brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link
lol exactly. bad form to blow the final whistle with the ball in the air heading towards the box.
still think each half should be 30 mins actual time with clock stopping every time ball out of play but then i think about what TV would do with the stoppages and i see enough of ray winstone and lads lads lads and everyone at half-time and can do without it during the actual game.

Van der Sanden's finish when she did decide to attack later on suggested that she might have been right to head for the corner flag the first time.
