I'm skeptical they'll manage to give each of these a distinct feel rather than following the proven Mando formula. I think I'd be more excited if there was one or two series in development rather than a half dozen.

Well, depending on the media. That Timothy Zahn book in 1991 kickstarting the run of novels and the various 90s computer games were keeping interest pretty high.

I hope, completely and unironically, that the Rangers of the New Republic series does nothing but remake old CHiPs episodes, and somehow stars Estrada, Wilcox, Dorn and Chris Pine's dad.

I just wound up watching the various Star Wars animations over the last month or so. ON Clone Wars season 5, finished Rebels and Resistance.
I noticed there seemed to be a problem with the timeline between teh end of Rebels and Mandalorian assumed Rebels should be canon to Mandalorian. BUt something a little off. Won't say more cos may be too much spoiler.

Found Resistance quite amusing and liked the animation. So wouldn't mind more of it or more done by the team working on it.

Haven't finished Clone Wars and only realised that Season 7 was made several years after the bulk of it recently. have only watched the first 2 episodes of that so far. Assumed since there was a gap it wouldn't be too much of a spoiler to the last few seasons of the earlier stuff.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 09:12 (three years ago) link

S6 and S7 of Clone Wars are definitely worthwhile - especially the last one - mostly dedicated to trying the series into the timeline of Revenge of the Sith. There are some plot threads from S6 that pay off in S7, so I don't know if would just skip it. Those last two seasons are short, anyway.

Nhex, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:37 (three years ago) link

They pop up earlier in Clone Wars, is that the 1st 2 episodes of S7?
Obviously long hair is supposed to be a Rambo.
Did hope it had some merit, could have been something semi worthwhile but also could just be a toy tie in.
There have been gropups like this that have been interesting in terms of tensions etc but probably just going to be gung ho and very puerile.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 17:19 (three years ago) link

Those are the same characters from the beginning of S7. Thought that arc was OK so I'm down for this. Plus, more Fennec!

Nhex, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 18:02 (three years ago) link

There is something about the style of animation of these Star Wars series that makes them unwatchable to me. I'm not sure what it is, too much in the video-game cutscene circa mid 00s style maybe. It's just ugly to me.

silverfish, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 19:37 (three years ago) link

The visual style of the Star Wars cartoons always reminds me of that movie Antz.

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 March 2021 19:59 (three years ago) link

I found the animation style on The Clone Wars to be a nigh-insurmountable barrier to entry for years. I'm glad I finally pushed through my aesthetic objections because it's the best filmed SW thing since The Empire Strikes Back imo. And the animation improves considerably as the show progresses.

So anyway who else has been watching Bad Batch regularly? While the feature-not-bug of the galaxy apparently consisting of twenty people that keep running into each other remains in full effect, the show’s set up some great visuals and set pieces and the easy chemistry of the Batch and Omega always charms. Last week’s episode and this week’s were both really sharp, all the sneaking around ruins and firing up old equipment like the cruiser engine.

And one Bad Batch episode to go, with a second season already in the works. It's pretty generally clear what the final episode will involve, I'd guess -- last minute escape, off to new adventures, etc etc. -- but it's been a nice little resolving on what happened with Kamino exactly in classic 'hm, yeah, let's tie that up' fashion with the SW universe. Read a little guess or two that this could also tie in long term with some of the bio research stuff we saw in The Mandalorian, who knows? Anyway, good first season, look forward to the next.

Not much “magic of Star Wars” in ep 1 for me (low midichlorian count?)

Boba Fett is definitely a character I am not v.interested in getting to know - he was best as a mysterious badass and not sure this show can do anything but diminish what was cool about him in the first place.

But I watched it happily enough.

It replicates the texture and atmosphere of The Mandolorian well enough, but is sadly lacking a central dynamic anywhere near as compelling as Mando & Child. Temura Morrison is not the most charismatic actor. I'll carry on watching though.

No spoilers of course and the templates throughout are, how you say, obvious/resonant, but basically you just learn a hell of a lot about Tatooine and those who live there, and it's handled really well.

Though I *will* say it's also pretty interesting due to the sheer accident of timing that this is running just a couple of months after Dune made a big splash.

My kids actually caught the subtle Peli Motto (Mandalorian season character) cameo that was in the background of one shot. https://screenrant.com/book-boba-fett-mandalorian-amy-sedaris-peli-motto-cameo/

The chase had to be quite deliberately covering all the cliches - halfway through when they got to the two guys carrying a big thing across the street, I was like “ok, now where is the cart of watermelons” and then there it was. My husband also thinks the scooters were a Quadrophenia reference. The. design of the one with all the redundant mirrors on the front convinced me too.

where they got into a fight with some people riding on a train for no good reason.

This is.. not what happened? A spice syndicate was passing by on a train, shooting at (and killing a couple of) the Tusken Raiders that Boba Fett had been captured by. He led an attack on the train in revenge.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:25 (two years ago) link

Seemed to me a train was driving by and the tuskans were shooting at it. Why would the spice traders randomly open fire on the tuskans from a train?

DJI, Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:38 (two years ago) link

I thought it was pretty clear that the spice traders had attacked them multiple times in the past, to the point that the Tuskens had somewhat of watch out for the train so they could be ready to fire back and defend themselves.

This is not a hill I want to die on, but that is a story about clashes between railroad builders and Native Americans. Boba Fett had a story about dudes zooming through a landscape (why are they not just flying in the air? Who knows?) taking potshots at Tuskan Raiders for unexplained reasons other than that they are assholes. Seems like a shaky parallel to me, but if that was their intent, fine.

DJI, Friday, 28 January 2022 01:18 (two years ago) link

I believe they are shooting at them because they are raiders. Perhaps flight is expensive for the amount or weight of cargo. Or maybe a train is safer for transporting illegal stuff.

The original Mando series had to prove Star Wars could work as a TV serial without sacrificing any of the production quality and visual imagination while finding new ways to expand the types of stories that could exist within the Star Wars mythos. This lent a dimension of danger to the weekly unfolding of each episode, even if the overarching motif was still that of marrying two ultimately conservative forms: the Western and the Space Opera. It seems, at least so far, Boba has doubled down on the more conservative aspects of the Mando series - more of a burrowing into a small section of the mythos than a pushing outward of the envelope.

Too many shifts of focus and not enough story. Bit of a mess. The lack of Boba Fett in the last few episodes suggests they realised it was a rubbish idea to make a show about Boba Fett halfway through production and panicked.

I am really picky about this shit and I thought that in most shots chi Luke was a vast improvement over previous attempts - if minimizing the up close dialogue enhanced the effect then GOOD. These people are artists, not wizards. As far as Ahsoka, in the plot sense I took it as her continuing her connection to Grogu by overseeing his transition and looking out for him a little, despite not taking him on herself. In the practical sense I think she was included #1 for fan service and #2 just to introduce her character to any viewers who somehow haven’t watched Clone Wars, Rebels, or Mando. Those people might exist.

Binged through Book of Boba Fett this week in time to get to the finale.
Honestly, I was entertained the whole time! Weird to look at internet discourse (not just ILX, but pretty much every review I landed on) and see everyone complaining so much, considering in most respects this show was Mandalorean Season 2.5, especially those last three episodes (probably too much Mando honestly).

Yeah, there was a lot of clunkiness, and several character relationships could've been done better (hoping Fennec gets some more time in the next show) but as pure fan service - which these shows completely are - it succeeded immensely. Krrsantin and Cad Bane in live action! Rancor vs. MechaGodzilla fight! I was smiling like 90% of the time watching the show. Even the Luke CGI, while still a little uncanny, but was vastly improved over what we got in Mando S2 and reshashing Luke/Obi-Wan with Grogu was fun.

I'll be happy to stay on this Star Wars TV train with next season of Mando and if they bother to continue Boba Fett as a series, and Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan...

Nhex, Thursday, 10 February 2022 17:39 (two years ago) link

I loved it. Watched it with a 6.5-year-old that kept saying "The whoooole episode is a battle?!" while smiling. Amy Sedaris and Grogu ending were also huge comedy hits. Grogu's walk could have been more convincing.

I assumed Baby Yoda's waddle was intentionally goofy, super muppet-motion

Nhex, Thursday, 10 February 2022 23:32 (two years ago) link

I found the first 4 eps of this pretty snoozy (albeit agreeably snoozy because it's Star Wars shit), but perked up substantially in ep 5 & 6 due because of excellent decision to jettison core concept. The ending was dumb but fun?

Ultimately I have felt deeply indifferent about this show ever since its existence was revealed at the end of Mando S2 - seems such a weird momentum-killing decision based on assumptions about Boba Fett that I find mystifying. As a OG SW '77 guy, I even struggle with the idea that Temuera Morrison is BF - he doesn't have the vibe I associate with the character at all, and I get no fan service payoff from his reprising the role.

As soon as Mando showed up in this he made Boba Fett redundant, as he has all along - effortlessly capturing what was cool about Boba in the first place (cool armour, body language, bad-assery) but also having compelling extra character layers.

Anyway I watched it with my kids regardless and they sat patiently thru the dull bits and loved all the Baby Yoda payoffs in Ep7.

my only complaint really is that it shouldn't have been that easy or quick for Grogu to return to Mando, which cheapens the end of season 2 after all that hard work of trying to get him to Luke in the first place. Having him come back as a full-fledged Jedi who doesn't need to take a nap every five mins would also have been more interesting.

Nhex, Friday, 11 February 2022 13:28 (two years ago) link

“ Temura Morrison is also a terrible actor”

Someone finally said it. Yes, he’s likeable enough, but damn, the voice actor in clone wars and bad batch provided infinitely more feeling to (what is sort of) the same character. - more range could have transformed this series. The fact that he’s paired with an equally lethargic version of Fennec sure doesn’t help either.

Kim, Friday, 11 February 2022 14:42 (two years ago) link

seems such a weird momentum-killing decision based on assumptions about Boba Fett that I find mystifying

In retrospect, having watched this series, I agree with this statement. I think most of the problems with the show stem from the weakness of the original concept. Boba Fett doesn't ever become a very interesting character, and I don't think it's primarily the fault of Morrison. He's just not given much to work with. His backstory seems to be a pile of well-worn tropes from action movies and TV westerns that never cohere into a believable personality. It just seems a perfunctory replay of the Mando pitch: he's a ruthless bounty hunter with a heart of gold! At least in the case of Mando you could imagine there was some weird bond between him and Grogu that was bringing out his soft side. But in the case of Boba, his decision to suddenly become the Richard the Lionheart of Tatooine never really gets any explanation. And the supporting cast is very bland. The only stand-out to me is the weaselly aide of the mayor who somehow heroically drags a memorable performance out of the wooden dialogue he's given to work with. (David Pasquesi, I'll look for him now.)

really hated how nü fett's default state is without helmet. he takes off his helmet so freaking much! terrible. i get that the showrunners need a way to distinguish him from mando and you're probably paying temeura a lot for that face and continuity with attack of the clones. but '80 fett says that the helmet stays on during sex!

Yglesias sucks but he's not wrong in that tweet upthread.

obviously, the reason that plot point doesn't work is because Lucas hadn't worked that part out yet when he wrote the first one, Ben was more or less just observing him from a distance to protect him and possibly recruit him later, not "hiding Luke from the dark side on his father's home planet using his father's actual surname".

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 15:57 (two years ago) link

that's kinda why I get so annoyed with neo-Star Wars gatekeepers who call things "not true Star Wars" on the basis of some plot points that don't line up perfectly, because the OG trilogy was full of holes and contradictions and who actually gives a fuck.

That Andor trailer, BTW, looks pretty fucking amazing. The building out of the Star Wars universe step by step keeps being interesting to me. (Also in how things can start to interconnect: the start of the first Obi-Wan episode also had me going "Hmm and elsewhere in the same building at the same time a little green alien kid is watching his protectors die...")

Worth noting in light of The Acolyte apparently being the first filmed version of the High Republic years that the next publishing initiative announced will be about a hundred years before said time in turn.

I think 'us' as older fans coming to terms with how a younger generation has had the prequels, and then the Clone Wars et al as further supplements, as part and parcel of the whole story in their experience really is kinda key. gonna keep watching obvs, but this show is pretty bad imo

Think the kid is doing the best she could, but in true SW tradition, her lines feel like they were written by people who have never met an actual child before.

Kumail Nanjaini v distracting and not in a good way - he's one of those actors where I can't really see him as any other character but himself. took me right out. and it's never quite explained why his character suddenly decided to help obi-wan? i mean he says why, but they never gave us an actual reason to trust him so it was like... huh??

also if the inquisitors can just read minds, why even bother threatening people to give up the location of jedis?

and yeah the chase sequences were hilarious - again, I have a feeling no one on the set has ever worked with children before, because those scenes where Leia's being chased by an adult that's pretending very hard they can't catch up with her just looked soooo goofy lol

the good: McGregor (pretty much carrying this whole thing) and Flea (RIP). Jimmy Smits/Bail Organa = only good dad in the galaxy.

Reva and the other Inquisitors are also being saddled with bad dialogue but overall, ok. I'm assuming the Grand Inquisitor isn't actually dead - seems like a waste to cast Rupert Friend and not utilise his action skills

Roz, Sunday, 29 May 2022 11:24 (one year ago) link

oooh the one actor I didn’t recognise: Benny Safdie as the other Jedi o_O

Roz, Sunday, 29 May 2022 12:10 (one year ago) link

and it's never quite explained why his character suddenly decided to help obi-wan?

this worked for me, seemed clear nanjaini's character is not a garden-variety hive-of-scum-and-villainy criminal but a weirdo jedi stan who never thought he'd encounter the real mccoy/gregor

There’s nothing quite as sad and hilarious as middle aged men complaining about dialog and logic in a Star Wars movie. Like, did you even see the first trilogy? The dialog is corny af and forced and riddled with terrible acting. The worst thing about Star Wars is easily Star Wars fans. I saw both episodes. There was pew pew and space ships. It was entertaining.

This is absolutely true but that doesn't make it unreasonable to want something made in 2022 to be better! Sitcoms in 1977 sucked too and if they launched a new half-hour show set in the Extended WKRP Universe I would expect the acting and writing to be held to a higher standard than the original.

having to extract info from someone while there's a Jedi in the same room also gives the Jedi an advantage because you're distracted

Roz otm

i'll probably keep watching this because the Ewan stuff is JUST compelling enough. and because i like the Star Wars world and find many of its accoutrements aesthetically satisfying as well as comfortingly familiar. but a lot of it doesn't really grab me. and a lot of the story choices aren't grabbing me either, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and watch the rest before i start ranting. let it suffice to say that I think Mandalorian (which wasn't trying to closely slot into spaces between other stories) had it easier.

a big thing me is that the oomph and magic and grandeur of Star Wars just doesn't translate down to TV scale, for me, even though the costumes and lightsaber effects do. some shots of the seedy space town looked ok, but a lot of them really showed the signs of being a big green screen room with a few extras scrolling about to populate the scene. the forest chase felt very Hercules/Xena I'm sure everyone involved worked really hard and did many clever things to make possible what they have, but for whatever irrational reason i didn't embrace it. the Tattooine stuff worked better I thought.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 05:02 (one year ago) link

she's fine, but the role needs "special," and it's really hard to find that, or draw it out on set (especially with a huge complicated production with a ton of other moving parts). more rehearsal time, super valuable for actors generally, could easily deaden a child's performance. and meanwhile she has to make sure she's hitting all the marks for the digital effects stuff. so we're back in prequel land in several ways.

Some good things:

* I did find the Inquisitors convincingly menacing and weird, even if their methods don't really make much sense. Main Baddie Sister is fine as a TV show villain but if this devolves into weekly "I'll get you next time, Kenobi!!" scenes, we're in trouble.

* I liked the approach to showing Kenobi's workaday grind in the desert, and what his priorities are at this point.

* I bet Smits was thrilled to finally get to play Bail in a complete, character-driven scene after all these years, and it worked well onscreen.

* Happy to have Edgerton back as Owen! He feels very natural and lived-in.

* Basically the first ep, apart from the forest bit, worked pretty well for me -- edit it down a little and it's a great first act for a lovely 95-minute Star Wars TV special.

-force mind reading had an established precedent in ROTJ, i thought ("sister... so... you have a twin sister..."), maybe this is just like an aggressive version of that.

-i enjoyed the T-16 skyhopper model that obi-wan bought for luke, nice callout ("i used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home")

-sung kang has a nice sansho the bailiff vibe going with that hat

-kumail was not bad for what he was given, his character has this watto vibe going on. i assume he's formerly jedi academy adjacent, maybe even flunked out? hence the motivation to help obi wan.

-when is obi wan going to get confronted about meat-stealing, we keep on getting shots of him wrapping chekhov's hunk of krayt-ribeye in butcher paper. (ok, i know that's not a krayt dragon but i don't know any other tatooine megafauna it could be, maybe a franchise-crossover molduga from zelda?)

-otherwise roz and doctor casino otm, the action sequences feel so lifeless and clunky. it feels as wooden as the pre-mandalorian episodes of boba fett, i wonder if there's some edict from on high at disney to make everything slow and bad. i'm betting these episodes would be a lot better as a director's cut? also annoying how video game-y these episodes feel (go talk to character A to collect plot device B in order to take the offworld transport at location C)? amazing how much better the andor trailer looks, i assume everything is just a lot better when you get to white sheet the story/characters and not feel confined by trying to fit something in on a timeline between the prequels and the original trilogy.

, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 12:34 (one year ago) link

i assumed the meat was a permitted daily ration. it's not really presented that way, but since Obi-Wan's entire status quo is "keep a low profile, don't attract attention, the boy is the only purpose remaining," i couldn't imagine him taking the risk of stealing stuff at work every day. also he's a single man, living way the hell out in the boonies with apparently few expenses - if anybody can possibly survive on the crappy pay of a short-term carcass-slicer, it'd be him.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 12:44 (one year ago) link

the Andor trailer does look quite good

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 12:53 (one year ago) link

i think the relative cheapness of the production is simple economics stemming from the subscription model. really great-looking action takes time and money. not that you need infinite dollars to make a fight scene exciting, but it does take time to put the camera/lights in interesting places, rehearse exciting fights, etc. and maybe they just want a few good-enough Star Wars shows a year, to keep on board the people who only signed up for Mandalorian in the first place. if you've already got McGregor in the title role and are promising fans an exciting and untold chapter in several major chatacters' stories, maybe there's not as much support from above when the creators want to push all these elements to be their best.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 12:53 (one year ago) link

-nice touch of bringing in temeura to play the homeless clone trooper

some shots of the seedy space town looked ok, but a lot of them really showed the signs of being a big green screen room with a few extras scrolling about to populate the scene.

yeah this was really bad, feels like there are directorial touches you can do to make a place seem a lot bigger and more lived in than it really is, using tight telephotos and zooms to provide a sense of depth - i suppose you can't do that with a greenscreen, everything is a big wide angle because you don't have a real set to work off of (the obvious call out is blade runner, look how much is done with just panning past the neon sign with a tight telephoto, some real depth to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcwOApqmJMQ)

-is this our first time on alderaan outside of episode 3? i like how cheesy and 70s all the costumes and buildings were, also how much of a verdant paradise it's supposed to be, something very "inner light" about it, they're going overboard to make sure we understand how much of a loss it was for it to get blown up!

This falls into the category/trope of Saving the Cat, doesn’t it? The protagonist displays how inherently good they are by extending care to an animal in need and thus establishes character without the need for dialogue.

I’m trying to remember what I watched in the last 6 months that literally had the protagonist saving a cat in the opening bits?

i'm finding this really underwritten (despite four credited screenwriters). every scene between obi-wan and leia just kinda repeats the same beats... he's SO wiped out and washed up and grumpy that he can't even muster interesting tidbits about the Force, or unique ways to establish that she needs to lay low and be quiet again, or clever cover stories when dealing with bad dudes.

idk, i'd just like a little pizzazz, a glint of specialness. the big confrontation this episode should be a HUGE moment but he has nothing to say there either. all the dialogue just feels very plot-functional to me.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 3 June 2022 13:30 (one year ago) link

Totally disagree! I liked their choice to have Obi-Wan have few lines and mostly physical emotive acting - he just found out a few hours ago that his lifelong surrogate son - who he STILL feels terrible guilt for murdering 20 years ago - survived as a hideous monster far more powerful than when he died and hellbent on revenge. He's utterly shell-shocked and basically gave up his life as a sacrifice play. I wonder how far they'll take Obi-Wan's growth by the end of the series.

The Vader appearance was brutal - neck snaps galore! - and just a notch or two below his Rogue One appearance

I think it's even a little worse than I was expecting... and makes me appreciate the heavy fan-service approach of the other series more, in retrospect; at least those had a real "Star Wars" flavor. This just feels like sort of a pedestrian TV show, cheap-looking, acting/directing not particularly good, etc.

The Muppet Baby Leia adventure also doesn't work for me, and not just b/c the kid doesn't seem much like Leia – it just feels like a bad idea. And, yes, it also immediately raises the question I see is discussed above. (The plot also weakens other aspects of ANH – like when Vader says, "I sense a presence I haven't felt since...," he means "...oh, 8 or 9 years ago"?)

I do like a few moments – like Obi-Wan reminiscing about Padme, and Leia asking if he's her real father. I did NOT like when Vader randomly kills a child on the street – is that really his style(?) I haven't read the Vader comics or anything, maybe it is. Honestly, this series feels like it should have just been a comic.

never really knew Vader to be much of a merciful person, regardless of the age of his victims. he would be an HR nightmare, you dont' get fired for failing, you get choked to death.

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 June 2022 16:59 (one year ago) link

Yeah, but none of those were civilians? He wasn't fighting anyone in that scene, just terrorizing the populace...

subject matter expert (morrisp), Monday, 6 June 2022 17:15 (one year ago) link

I thought Vader was doing it because he knew Obi-Wan would show himself if he kept killing the villagers?

I mean as Anakin he did also slaughter an entire village of Tusken Raiders.

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 June 2022 17:28 (one year ago) link

And yes that was due to hate/vengeance, but I felt like Vader and Reva were pissed that he was hiding and nobody was fessing up as to where he was so he took things to the next level to draw him out

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Monday, 6 June 2022 17:29 (one year ago) link

He also killed the younglings in Ep. 3, of course

It all plays into thing of how "questionable" it is that Anakin gets to chill in eternity as a Force Ghost if he's a cold-blooded murderer.

it's the whole Xtian allegory, he 'asked forgiveness' shortly before he died so all is kosher now.

A few other bits I liked were: (a) the Clone Veteran, and (b) Obi-Wan waking up in a cold sweat after suffering thru a nightmare montage of the prequels' shittiest moments (that had to be tongue-in-cheek, right?)

I feel like Obi-Wan gestures toward the "aging hero reluctantly pulled out of retirement" trope, but doesn't want to commit fully to it – which is actually kind of interesting, but also makes the show feel weirdly hollow... like even the scene where goes John Wick and digs up his lifesabers doesn't trigger any emotion (and doesn't seem meant to). Obi-Wan just seems depressed... and you already know he can't get TOO much of his mojo back, since he just ends up going off the grid even further.

It's a bridge between what the jedi were and what they need to become, imo

Obi-Wan's not back, he's just doing the right thing for an old friend. He's not going back to being a jedi because he's adrift and doesn't know what being a jedi means anymore. We're getting the middle piece between him being mentally and emotionally wrecked after he left his best friend to die and his order was slaughtered and the calm, resolute Obi-Wan we first saw.

Maybe Qui-Gon picks up the force phone at some point in this series, or he figures out it's not the number of jedi using the force, it's the endless force that just needs one jedi to stand alone

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Friday, 17 June 2022 17:38 (one year ago) link

I have to admire their gutsiness in wanting to front-and-center the "Darth Vader is the same person as Anakin Skywalker" aspect of this whole universe/saga/whatever. It makes obvious narrative sense to do so, but has this problem where the three movies devoted to making the Anakin-Vader transition actually left me less convinced, emotionally speaking, that the murderous death robot voiced by James Earl Jones was once a whiny, angsty youth played by Hayden Christensen. It's a huge huge journey for this guy to have taken, but it's never felt real to me. And it's so important to Obi-Wan's motivations and feelings in this show!

Maybe if Anakin had been a young man in the first one, half-man half-machine in the second, and mostly Vader in the third, or something.... oh well. I don't think it's something they can really solve at this point, although maybe people who read the comic books or novels have other stuff filling those gaps.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 17 June 2022 17:42 (one year ago) link

I've always felt the prequels should have started w/Anakin as a young man, and taken place over a shorter period of time (like the OT). The events of TPM bring almost nothing to the table, other than showing you the roots of Palpatine's long game (which really don't matter).

I'm into it enough to keep watching, but not swept up enough to not be distracted by little things. My favorite might be the jump from "your terrible injuries need more time to heal" to "I'll drop you off somewhere on this briny ocean planet and you'll swim the last few miles underwater."

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 18 June 2022 13:40 (one year ago) link

Also, what the hell was Third Sister doing while Vader's attention and powers were completely occupied holding down that spaceship? Was she in the bathroom? Filling out paperwork with some stormtroopers? Really missed an opportunity there, oh well.

groovypanda, Saturday, 18 June 2022 16:02 (one year ago) link

Reva doing the "keep your enemies close" long game is the plot point that rang really false for some of the reasons stated upthread. I like the angle of her being a Youngling that escaped, but I don't really watch this for the plot, more for the character moments of rusty Kenobi and sloppy, vindictive Vader.

Slowzy LOLtidore (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 June 2022 16:31 (one year ago) link

My quick fix for this whole thing: have Christensen voice Vader, and he only acquires the James Earl Jones voice as a result of additional injuries suffered at some point in this series. Obviously this contradicts the ending of Episode III. But I think for this character story between him and Obi-Wan, it'd work better to ask Christensen to play bitter, self-loathing mid-30s psycho Anakin, still in denial about the exact way things went down back in the day.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 18 June 2022 16:41 (one year ago) link

despite the numerous weird plot holes and sometimes ridiculous logic in this series I am thoroughly enjoying this. As mentioned upthread maybe just because of some interesting character development, which isn't something you see as much in the star wars movies.

silverfish, Sunday, 19 June 2022 03:22 (one year ago) link

glad that people are enjoying it - for real! following comments offered merely as grist for the "internet forum"

the character development thing is interesting - i don't feel very interested in these characters as characters i gotta say - nobody is particularly charming/compelling - and their ability to meaningfully change is limited by their need to slot into their allotted positions for ep 4 - a grim ewan macgregor going from checked-out to marginally less checked-out isn't a super compelling arc for me

(i also think that as a kid who saw OG SW '77 in the cinema, i find it particularly difficult to think of these particular pieces of IP as actual characters with motivations and such - is it because i was so young when i saw it? but for me they'll always be brilliant archetypes who serve a plot function in those 3 films - and any attempt to give them proper psychological depth just bounces off my brain - same with Doctor Who, when people start talking about his PTSD or whatever I just tune out - he's The Doctor! that is all)

anyway, definitely think the Mandalorian is far and away the best of these series so far because it uses new characters - and i could probably make a case for Rogue One being the best film qua film of the Disney era

Been mostly enjoying the series but that was a disappointing finale apart from the main duel (tho this ended unsatisfyingly also and didn't mean enough to justify the retcon). Stakes too low, villains weaknesses brought about far too easily. What even was Reva's plan? Would've liked more Hayden and there were a few ways they should've handled that but didn't.

I'm officially someone with Star Wars fatigue, having consumed almost all of the new media. My friends and their kids are enjoying Obi-Wan and the cool new stuff. beats me, it started off as what sounded like a diplomatic call for help and then ends with that oddly personal "help me Obi-Wan Kenobi.." bit

they're going to keep making stuff that falls between existing stories and playing the game of spotting which plot point is a square peg they're trying to push through a round hole is tedious canon-grinding

who gives a crap, tell me there were two Darth Vaders and only one of them was Anakin. have the Emperor blow up a planet using the force alone. just make an interesting show

mh, Thursday, 23 June 2022 15:16 (one year ago) link

Fair enough, but they’re the ones choosing to tell stories that are instantly raising these questions for people. With a film as beloved as Star Wars, when you start retconning big chunks of the backstory, it will have that effect!

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Thursday, 23 June 2022 15:21 (one year ago) link

i hate myself for writing this, but:

-how did they make the time work in the finale - so reva gets left for dead, but manages to get off that planet to tatooine and find out where owen lives at the same time the rebel ship is still being chased by the star destroyer?
-accounting for reva's trip means the rebel ship is flying around getting shot at for half a day at least - seems kind of implausible given a star destroyer's firepower? they don't have ion cannons yet?
-lol @ the decoy ship, but then there's another ship inside the real ship! and the dropship has a functioning hyperdrive?
-there's enough time for obi-wan to fight vader, leave and go to tattooine before the night is over and rescue luke?
-what is reva's motivation for wanting to kill luke - just to get back at obi wan?
-luke's encounter with reva makes it hard to believe his wide-eyed farmboy innocence @ the force in ANH - he wouldn't have remembered being chased by an inquisitor with a lightsaber?
-what's the point of obi wan keeping leia's droid - just so you can have a scene of leia ignoring obi wan for the droid when they reunite?

realize i'm being a huge comic book guy here!

Could've been cool to see him just remove the helmet fully but I guess it's supposed to be keeping him alive and maybe only just enough of it broke to avoid that.

The way I would've preferred the fight to end is instead of Kenobi getting buried for all of 10 seconds is for Vader have to become trapped by rocks himself in such a way as to allow Kenobi enough time to escape. Kenobi then also destroys Vader's shuttle, figuring that there's a chance Vader would survive but his needing rescue would distract the Grand Inquisitor and co who could show up during a penultimate scene to either rescue or see Vader crawling out of the rock pile. Cut to Kenobi's final scene. Then maybe do the scene with the Emperor as a mid or end credit scene.

that and so that McGregor can finally say “hello there”, sigh

i know shitty retcons have been part of SW tradition from the very beginning, but I am starting to wonder whether they’re doing it deliberately at this point lol. like I can buy the idea that Leia is pretending not to know him when she sends her message in ANH but… she also has little to no reaction to his death and spends the aftermath comforting Luke instead. It’s just odd to introduce this relationship between two major characters knowing perfectly well that it doesn’t quite fit in with later parts of their story. but you know, whatever.

Loved wheezing half masked Vader. Ewan was the best part of this show, and he was the main character so that really works. I like Mando better, but everyone else in my house thought this was the best.

Reva's actions make no sense if she doesn't know Luke is Darth Jr. And that is a pretty good hint that she knows.

mh, Saturday, 25 June 2022 05:54 (one year ago) link

Despite my fondness for what appears to be McGregor’s irl personality (cf Long Way Down etc.) I find him pretty tedious as an actor post Trainspotting. But I bought his grief in part 6 of this, the fight was the best thing in it (and felt mythical in the way I wanted the whole show to feel).

assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 25 June 2022 08:39 (one year ago) link

I guess MacGregor was trying his best to infuse the script with something? But apart from the lack of tension re knowing where everyone ends up - I also feel Obi-Wan, like Boba Fett, is a character that doesn’t really support extended examination? Like, he was a pretty cool kindly space wizard in one film - everything else feels pretty tedious and awkwardly retrofitted.

But maybe people who were the right age for prequels / Clone Wars might have found it easier to lock in to?

the life of a rebo band is always intense (emsworth), Saturday, 25 June 2022 10:16 (one year ago) link

These characters were just undeveloped. Boba Fett was originally nothing more than a cool costume. Everything after the first film has been retrofit, so I don't know what makes one case more tedious than another.

Herby Dutch Baby (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 25 June 2022 10:45 (one year ago) link

McGregor did a good job IMHO... his last scene with Leia worked on me emotionally despite everything being so terribly underwritten and shoehorned in. agreed about no one having real conversations in this. i feel like every time two characters seem poised to have an interaction that would actually be interesting (and difficult) to write, the show cuts away to something else.

my comic book guy moment: what happened to the star destroyer that Vader came down from? it seems like that would pose some small issue for Obi-Wan's getaway. it seems to just be.... not there. if they're so easily evaded, then it kinda deflates his grand self-sacrificing gesture.

also i really wanted jimmy smits to be like "c'mon, we got all dressed up, you could at least stay for lunch!"

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 25 June 2022 13:49 (one year ago) link

mouse ears appear on Smits' head. "C'mon, we're heading to Oga's Cantina for Jabba Juice and Batuu Bits, loser."

Herby Dutch Baby (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 25 June 2022 16:17 (one year ago) link

Boba Fett was originally nothing more than a cool costume. Everything after the first film has been retrofit, so I don't know what makes one case more tedious than another.

IMO, it’s because it’s not comics, where retconning just happens continuously and it’s accepted as part of how the fictional universe is received. When you have stories that sit on their own for a few decades, then are “retrofitted,”then once again a few decades later… you feel it a different way.

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Saturday, 25 June 2022 16:49 (one year ago) link

(Also, for all the jokes about “Comic Book Guy”–style complaints, at least comics have No-Prizes and retcon adjustments etc. to clean up the narrative messes they make.)

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:11 (one year ago) link

I think the point is more "these are very slight in terms of retcons and to some aren't really that jarring". it's not like Terminator 3 changing John and Sarah Connor's birthdates randomly due to laziness, or Uncle Jesse on Full House being shown in high school the day before his graduation, then seasons later saying he dropped out of high school early on

Doop Snogg (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

Doop Snogg (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

But no one cares about that stuff in sitcoms, no matter how much they enjoy them – they’re just sitcoms

If the argument is that Luke Skywalker is no different from Andy in Family Ties, then it’s just: “Star Wars has always sucked, what are you complaining about” (which I do see people saying a lot)

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:38 (one year ago) link

Like it’s a weird dichotomy to be invested enough in Star Wars to still be watching spinoffs 40 years later, but also say that it’s all just a silly lark? Idk

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:39 (one year ago) link

Not what *I'm* saying, though. Star Wars has never been tightly plotted or had consistent continuity doesn't mean "lol it always sucked", but "this never bothered me in the past when they did it, why should it now?"

Doop Snogg (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:57 (one year ago) link

Add a period after "continuity"

Doop Snogg (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:58 (one year ago) link

Or basically what mh said way upthread

Doop Snogg (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:58 (one year ago) link

The people who didn't like this show generally don't dislike it on continuity grounds, it's due to many things, like a "lack of stakes"

Doop Snogg (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:59 (one year ago) link

I guess I get your pov, but I don’t feel like it gets “better” the more it happens and in crappier contexts. The first few movies are great enough that a few little quirks and inconsistencies don’t matter much.

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Saturday, 25 June 2022 18:00 (one year ago) link

If Obi-Wan were a great show, I likely wouldn’t care too much about the inconsistencies either.

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Saturday, 25 June 2022 18:01 (one year ago) link

There is story about navigating through trauma that has stakes and fits nicely into the usual jedi vs darkside theme. The stakes around Reva's story were largely open. Not every stake needs to be "will they die?!"

I was surprised how much I liked this show. McGregor was always one of the better parts of the prequels, and here he has better material to work with. Reva and kid Leia were interesting enough characters. Mandalorian is probably still better overall, but I liked the tight focus and faster pace here

Vinnie, Tuesday, 28 June 2022 12:45 (one year ago) link

Yeah I liked this a lot too. Thought McGregor was very good (much much better that what I remember of the prequels). Reva was good too up until the last episode, where her actions made very little sense to me, even if she somehow figured out that Luke was Vader's son.

Liked Darth Vader in this, though maybe, because I read some of those Darth Vader comics (which are actually one of the Star Wars things I enjoyed the most), I was reading way more into the character than what was actually on the screen.

silverfish, Tuesday, 28 June 2022 16:02 (one year ago) link

For sure a lot of the enjoyment of this show boils down to the Obi-Wan/Darth conflict, culminating in that stunning fight in the finale. Though I did think the line where Darth says he himself killed Anakin was eye-rolling, clearly there to justify the "certain point of view" conversation in Return of the Jedi

Vinnie, Tuesday, 28 June 2022 23:22 (one year ago) link

The universe feels lived in and the characters for once appear to be driven by human-level motivations - misplaced ambition, jealousy, laziness, spur-of-the-moment thoughtlessness. People actually talking like people, instead of just delivering exposition. No one is just going round going from place to place completing RPG quests (which is what Obi-Wan/Mando sometimes felt like).

Mull of Kenari

Stevolende, Sunday, 25 September 2022 07:49 (one year ago) link

Am at least semi enjoying this though am aware taht whatever background is being set is pretty temporary no matter how in depth it's being set up as so intrigues between side characters probably not as important as might seem. I take it we do know the ultimate end of the story arc anyway & it ain't no frog chorus. THough possibly set up to show attitudes to loyalty and a few other things. Though he do seem a tad shady and stuff.

Trying to work out why the kids clothing on Kenari looks so manufactured when they seem to have been returned to a primitive level though not sure how long before. THought clothing would be more natural/simple not as textured or complicatedly finished. KIds look more dressed than scrabbling by having to make clothing or whatever from local materials.

Is this like a footnote to a footnote if the main character is someone whose til now main arc was inside a film that sets up some of the action in one of the original films.

Stevolende, Sunday, 25 September 2022 08:59 (one year ago) link

Yes definitely - backstory to the backstory.

Interesting point about the clothes. Maybe they’re still getting by on the remains of what the mining colony left (maybe 100 years earlier? Hard to tell)

I wonder if Dudley Do-Right policeman is going to “break good” at some point

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 25 September 2022 09:05 (one year ago) link

The situation on Kenari was relatively recent. There’s that line in the third episode about how Cassian saw his father hanged by the imperials in the town square as a kid! The implication is that the adults were killed or were absent for other reasons.

I think the bouncing between his past and the present day sets up the parallel of circumstances molding his path. He didn’t choose to leave his planet but that became his life, much as he isn’t actively trying to become a rebel agent but he’s stuck with another foster parent figure again. Orphans make the best agents, you know.

I kind of hope they follow through on that, and his diminished sense of agency, as he gets groomed as a spy and assassin

mh, Sunday, 25 September 2022 13:58 (one year ago) link

i was psyched for the heist but now i’m very much enjoying the slow burn. “clem” a bit jumpy, not just a strong dude for us to identify with but a dude with problems. “we all have our own rebellion” - loved that.

will our double agent’s moment of sentimentality - allowing the men to watch the cosmic happening - come back to bite them? i don’t know but i loved that we got to see that little grin

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 08:23 (one year ago) link

maybe didn't follow the plot but felt like that smile was showing that he played them, got them to think he was giving them what they wanted when really he cleared them out to not be paying attention during the heist or something?

I'm enjoying Ebon Moss Bachrach. I HATED him on Girls, where he played a truly odious character. Then when he showed up in the Bear I was like ugh this guy again, but then I was like well he's playing an asshole, do I hate the actor or just his characters? Then by the end of the Bear I was like, aw I like this guy, and now here he is again! And he's enjoyable. ANd I can erase his Girls character from my memory.

dan selzer, Friday, 7 October 2022 17:05 (one year ago) link

I've had almost the same opinions as you regarding that actor; they did too good a job making him an asshole on Girls and it's taken a few years to rectify. He was also in one season of Damages

So difficult to tell whether Dunham liked or loathed her characters, and I guess that had consequences for the performers too - were we watching a charming actor uncharmingly playing an asshole, or an uncharming performance of a character we were supposed to like? Hard to tell from week to week

Fantastic last couple of episodes here. And yes it's pretty clear we're on a three episode arc each time, which I have no problem with. (Appreciate the ISB office politics mania of course. Also didn't realize the dude there with the one speech about imposing measures etc is the latest iteration of this character, who might be the classic retcon.)

nerdy sidebar - i love the room interiors for a lot of their homes & meeting rooms, like the architectural details in mon mothma’s mansion or the interesting brick interiors of andor’s home or that 70’s looking pad of his girlfriend/not-girlfriend, and uptight-guy’s mom’s modular pod-apartment

i can’t say why exactly but it gives me a bit of a “bladerunner” echo.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:28 (one year ago) link

it is much more focused on giving a glimpse into how normal people live in various parts of the galaxy, very subdued, much less action and heroics, although that stuff is in there for sure.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:33 (one year ago) link

andor is way more grounded in a lot of ways than mandalorian, it feels more like a gritty, modern type of spy movie that happens to be set in star wars world rather than the kind of epic space western like mando was

watched the new one last night and was thinking the same stuff about the production design and music. A lot of these star wars shows have felt kinda cheap...like expensive compared to a lot of tv shows, but budget compared to an actual movie, but the physical world building, the exteriors and interiors, vehicle design etc, on Andor has been really fantastic. I prefer this to the Mandalorian for sure. I skipped Boba and only watched one episode of Obi Wan.

dan selzer, Friday, 21 October 2022 12:52 (one year ago) link

I think a big reason it looks so much realer is that they used the green screen superdome a lot less for this show. Or at least, that gave them an excuse to have less scenes of people standing around in the desert.

I keep hearing good things about "Andor," but I haven't watched anything post-Mando S2. Just kind of Star War'd out, I guess. (Also totally off the LotR and GoT trains, too, though more power to you folks invested.) But maybe I'll give it a shot, since we're between Marvel things. The praise seems similar to S1 of "Mando" - just a good show set in the Star Wars universe rather than some portentous fan service playing up/with mythology.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2022 13:24 (one year ago) link

Pretty much - it's a good show, a little elevated by the extra Star Wars mythology that it does touch and the action setpieces that finally happen

Nhex, Monday, 24 October 2022 13:33 (one year ago) link

it ties in closer to the main Star Wars story than Mandolorian does because it's about the birth of the rebellion, but mostly avoids obvious fan service, most of the characters and settings are new, and there hasn't been any mention of jedi/sith stuff so far. It sidesteps the superhero aspects of Star Wars and focuses more on the human side of things.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 24 October 2022 13:40 (one year ago) link

I like the idea of the "rebel alliance" explicitly being a coalition of partisans and pro-republic politicians and aristocrats, as messy as that may be, playing out. The formal title of "Alliance to Restore the Republic" might be an interesting point in a future episode because it's been pretty strongly implied that some of the people involved hate the Empire but didn't necessarily have great faith in the Republic

mh, Monday, 24 October 2022 14:26 (one year ago) link

I love Andor, and thought the Mandalorian post season 2, the Boba Fett thing, was dumb, as was Obi Wan. Dug the first two of Madalorian, but this is even better.

Yeah it can't beat Visions for sheer reinvention but it does a nice job of balancing out illustrative anecdotes to -- I think rather handily -- doing a bit of filling in corners for the prequels and Clone Wars (and Rebels, just) without having to commit to a full series or movie or anything (they should use that model more going forward). It is also definitely an example of just how continually better their animation studio and affiliate partners are getting in terms of visual detail and possibilities.

* Three new movies planned:

https://gizmodo.com/star-wars-new-film-announced-2025-live-action-1850308047

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy introduced thethree directors for the next three Star Wars movies: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold, Mandalorian and Clone Wars architect Dave Filoni, and Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The three films will span across the entirety of the known Star Wars timeline, which will now include the Dawn of the Jedi, 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker films, and the time of the New Jedi Order, 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker.

Mangold’s film, set during that earliest period of the timeline, will tell the tale of the first Jedi ever in what he described as a “biblical epic.” Dave Filoni will direct a new film set in the time period of The Mandalorian, culminating in the conflict between the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic. Lastly, Obaid-Chinoy reintroduced Jedi Master Rey Skywalker, Daisy Ridley herself, who will rebuild the Jedi Order in a new film.

by 2026, the full AI power grid will begin to fail and fossil fuel reserves will be accidentally destroyed by AI military. Movies will be a thing of the past, with gatherings in movie theatres morphing into gatherings where one person who saw a movie narrates what happened in it to engaged fans.

Initially these will be free until the movie studios commodify them and start charging $20 each for the opportunity.

by 2029 700 million people will be dead they won't be able to use WebMD to know it's time to go to the hospital.

by 2030 movies will return in the form of crude, gigantic 50 foot flip books, with pages flipped by employees getting paid $5 hour and offered no medical care for when they injure themselves.

by 2031, Cameron will die, sitting forlorn outside an abandoned movie, his last words being "if only they could have seen the world I built them"

Wondering how this landed for folks who never watched Rebels, cause this really felt to me like they just dropped you in the middle of that story.

Not really feeling Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera so far but otherwise, this was ok. A lot of backstory and setup to get through

Roz, Thursday, 24 August 2023 03:44 (eight months ago) link

Yeah looked good but could've given a bit more stuff in general e.g. Thrawn tease. Agree with some criticism that Ahsoka is a little too stoic but my biggest gripe was after Reva surviving lightsaber impalement in the Kenobi show they did the same thing with Sabine here. They don't even have Rey-like healing powers!

I have only sketchy Rebels knowledge - my kids watched it so I absorbed a bit by osmosis - I enjoyed this new show without being poleaxed by it - I think they did a good job of making the characters accessible without prior knowledge, and am definitely inclined to give it a few eps grace period to find its vibe

It definitely wasn't as turgid as Kenobi / Boba Fett

E3 captured the 8 year old's attention more than the first two. I think the energies of Ahsoka, Sabine, Hera, and Huyang are absolutely distinct. However, I may be missing some of the Rebels story that establishes Sabine as so distinct as a candidate for Jedi training (beyond being Mandalorian). It's clear that a major arc of the series will be Ahsoka's teaching approach, less chisel and more collaboration. But I'm guessing the Big Problem of Training Sabine is clearer if you come in with Rebels backstory.

My 9yo and I had been watching Rebels for the last few months—he’s seen it all before but wanted me to watch it. We got almost through the second season befor le Ahsoka started. He claimed to be super excited about it but he seems to have completely bailed on it after two episodes. My 13yo on the other hand is totally hooked. He is a huge Thrawn fan—read all the books over and over—and he is full of anticipation for the reveal.

Stevo, Thursday, 31 August 2023 07:28 (eight months ago) link

This has been ok so far, but it is curiously flat. The script can be a bit clunky, but the main issue is with the direction and editing. Filoni really drags scenes out - lots of extended shots of people looking serious - and doesn't deliver on the action. Ahsoka going for a space walk and slicing up ships with her lightsaber should have been a WOAH moment, but it didn't quite land. The Mandolorian really benefitted from strong action directors coming in, but this feels like Filoni is starting to make the same mistakes Lucas did with the Trilogy. Even if he doesn't direct every episode, it's very much his baby.

Haha, yeah. One of the previous episodes had him standing looking at the star map for a few moments, which worked dramatically and also gave the audience something to pore over, but the scene you describe felt like a half-assed attempt at creating an ominous mood. Are they going to end every episode with him standing around brooding? Should clarify the latest episode wasn't directed by Filoni, but between the scripts and baggy editing there's a certain lack of energy.

Can someone explain why the third episode in these types of shows is so often the only one under 40 minutes? Maybe sometimes it's the second ep. And yet this still felt padded at times - e.g. that needlessly lingering shot of Skoll at the end seemed to offer nothing.

Cool to finally see a space walk of sorts in live action SW tho.

re villains standing around looking serious: it doesn’t help that none of them are particularly menacing or compelling - they’re just saying lines and glowering. it’s all very Darth Maul in Episode 1… but at least that guy looked cool, blonde Sith girl just kind of looks like she’s fresh off a shift at some place that serves deconstructed coffee.

I know it’s probably because they’re all separated right now and it’s all building up to the moment where the gang is back together but show seems to be missing that Rebels energy, where they’re constantly squabbling and arguing but you know it’s all out of love and they’re about to kick some Empire ass. The tension between Ahsoka and Sabine isn’t quite the same…

lol

xpost there's not much to add about the end of Rebels - basically, the final battle takes place on Lothal and ends with Ezra using his animal communication powers to summon the purgill to transport him, Thrawn and Thrawn's Star Destroyer somewhere unknown (which begs the question of why Ahsoka didn't think of talking to the space whales sooner, but nvm).

so yes, the stormtroopers were taken along for the ride and their useless armor prob fell apart while they were waiting it out. also been seeing some theories that they're dead troopers resurrected by the nightsisters' magic, zzzz

the tone of this show is bizarrely muted - everything from the color palette to the line delivery is so lifeless and flat. thrawn was just "hi sabine long time no see, i'm gonna let you go find ezra now while i continue my evil deeds, bye". and the way sabine greeted ezra was almost as if he'd gone on vacation for a few weeks instead of disappearing for several years

nashwan, Thursday, 21 September 2023 19:55 (seven months ago) link

Of course, this jizz erasure should not be confused with the recent revelation from Marvel's in-continuity Darth Vader comics, which established that Anakin Skywalker's fatherless conception was not, in fact, immaculate, but rather the result of Emperor Palpatine using his Sith abilities to Force-impregnate Shmi Skywalker. That is, unfortunately, still part of the canon.

Why would that not be part of the canon(?) It's from the Prequel Trilogy, right (or at least strongly implied there)?

stylized in all lowercase (morrisp), Wednesday, 27 September 2023 19:28 (seven months ago) link

tbf that's not a literal scene, it's among a bunch of metaphorical force vision scenes

iirc the canon is that palpatine was messing around with the force in a bunch of weird ways and anakin's existence was linked to that

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 27 September 2023 19:31 (seven months ago) link

what's funnier is the more recent comics where the force gets way out of wack due to someone activating an ancient artifact. everyone's affected, but Darth Vader ends up seeking out some other ancient artifacts including a shield that he keeps using to channel powerful force blasts. this is after he completely loses control and ends up blowing a giant hole in the side of his star destroyer

I will be interested to see where it goes exactly; if anything I'm kinda curious how the reappearance of Ezra in the New Republic plays out (like...does Luke swing by to say hi from his temple or). Guess we'll see the full reunited Rebels crew - and maybe Kanan as Force Ghost? - in Filoni's film?

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 18:54 (seven months ago) link

Can't help feeling this series was too slight overall and needed more stuff to happen.

nashwan, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 21:10 (seven months ago) link

Kanan had...a different form at the end of Rebels, which actually would be cool to see in live action

Feel like these series all have good stuff, but ultimate end up a little too long and weirdly paced. Obi-Wan would've been a lot better as a film, Book of Boba Fett would've been better as a mini-arc in Mando (which it kinda ended up being), this had a good amount of time but soooo much of it felt slow and off, especially the pilot

That said, yeah, still worthwhile esp. as someone who has gotten through all of Clone Wars and Rebels, maybe less so if you're not that deep into it. Hopefully Mando stays good(ish) because I'm already kinda ready to wrap a bow on this entire era, bring on the High Republic show and the Rey movie

Again I'll say I'm pretty happy with the casting decisions and they will definitely continue to pay off into the future (though RIP Ray Stevenson, a shame... didn't realize until now he also voiced Gar Saxon in Clone Wars/Rebels)

I’m on board with everything you just said

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 5 October 2023 03:31 (seven months ago) link

to an extent the entire Ahsoka series was fan service but that very brief Morai cameo was the extra bit I appreciated

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 5 October 2023 03:33 (seven months ago) link

oh yeah! the other bit articles are missing is the large statues at the end seem to include the Mortis daughter, but the sculpture is degraded or more likely defaced given the planet’s habitants

but you know who has a link

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 5 October 2023 03:36 (seven months ago) link

I would like to see Ahsoka and Mando stories/characters crossover because I thought most of Mando s3 was a dud. But mixing in Thrawn and Sabine (among others) into Mando’s plot might help that show recover.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 5 October 2023 04:13 (seven months ago) link

they mixed in a little material from the new canon books because Thrawn was one of the few who met both Anakin and Vader and easily deduced they were the same guy

and that guy just blew through anything that tried to stop him

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 5 October 2023 04:24 (seven months ago) link

agree with everything Nhex said

i'm still stuck on what the hell ezra and thrawn did for the 10 years they were stranded - they did separate immediately, or did they try to kill each other several times or...?

cause it doesn't make a lot of sense for ezra to not be doing anything while thrawn was working with the nightsisters and building his army. not that i need them to go into detail or anything, just one or two lines of explanation would've been nice

there were a lot of moments in ahsoka that were like that. i get that star wars has never been particularly character-driven but these new shows really do often feel like people moving from place to place and doing things just because the plot says so, or so they can be all like "LOOK AT THIS COOL THING/REFERENCE/FIGHT SCENE". I really like the cast too, so it's a bummer that the character with the most energy and personality on the show so far is robot David Tennant.

Roz, Thursday, 5 October 2023 05:35 (seven months ago) link

like that short scene between Huyang and Ezra was nice, would've appreciated a bit more of that

Roz, Thursday, 5 October 2023 05:38 (seven months ago) link

Ezra was clearly just hanging out with the dandy turtles, living his best life

groovypanda, Thursday, 5 October 2023 19:39 (seven months ago) link

I appreciated that! The Ahsoka/Anakin force dream episode was kind of all over the place, but the key question was really "What does it mean to be a jedi?" and she grew up where it purely meant being a warrior. Being an itinerant jedi and just hanging with the turtles and helping them out would definitely be jedi stuff

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 5 October 2023 20:19 (seven months ago) link

Sabine: I am finally on Peridea, where Ezra here has been trapped with a crazed monomaniac, Grand Admiral Thrawn, who'd like nothing more than to see Ezra dead. Tell us, how have you managed to stay alive all this time, Ezra?
Ezra: I like turtles.

Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 6 October 2023 01:00 (seven months ago) link

TBF the animal force bonding thing is actually a key character trait for him going back to Rebels! it actually did make sense in a way, though i too hunger for details about what happened in those ten years which will probably be covered in some novel i'll never read

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 17 November 2023 19:33 (five months ago) link

Fun fact: I watched the holiday special at my grandmother's house when it aired, I was a few months shy of 4 years old, but already a huge star wars fan. The recollection of it lingered at the edge of my memory for many years, as something that I only half believed was real. Later during my college years, a friend had a VHS copy that I watched, and I was amazed to learn that those hazy memories were indeed something that happened and not just a weird fever dream.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 17 November 2023 19:37 (five months ago) link

Hahah Moodles that was very much me in ways. I was seven when it aired, so a little more conscious about it and definitely did watch it. But soon after it must have slipped my memory, and, believe it or not, it was while I was watching coverage of Clinton winning his first term back in 1992 and eating a celebratory pizza that somehow I found myself going for the first time ever "Wait...god wasn't there a Star Wars holiday special? There WAS, wasn't there, and I know I saw it. Why have I never heard about it again?" Forever grateful to the freaks with early VCRs who captured it for the ages.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:18 (five months ago) link

When one of those Ewoks live-action specials aired, I watched it (as a little kid) and thought it was the first episode of a series. So every night, for the next few weeks, I would check for the 2nd episode, thinking – "Maybe it was Tuesday night... maybe it was WEDNESDAY night...," before finally giving up.

Yeah, we had a VHS tape of Caravan of Courage, so I watched that a ton as a 9-10 year old, but I only saw the second once so have much fuzzier memories of that one, mainly just centered around Wilford Brimley.

Actually, now that I look at the Wikipedia pages, it was more likely that first one (in 1984). I didn't know there were two until more recently.

I also feel like SW characters have been “morally ambiguous” since the first film, and the line between light & dark was always shown to be thin. Behind that, the “Jedi are really the bad guys!” thing feels like some Clerks sh1t…

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:33 (one month ago) link

The Bad Batch is plodding along too slowly imo - said the same re Ahsoka (tho tbh also with Andor at first but that paid off big time). The dark tonal shifts are interesting (the poor Camino scientist must be the most depressed-sounding animation character ever, understandably) but this isn't rubbing off on the story much. Wouldn't it be more exciting and cogent for example if the Emperor had witnessed Omega's escape from the base and so there was more pressure around the crew lying low trying to work out what to do next? Mebbe. Not seen the latest ep tho.

nashwan, Thursday, 4 April 2024 20:15 (one month ago) link

Well that's the thing, pressure has, how to put it, ramped up as of yesterday's episodes (it was a two-drop day).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2024 20:17 (one month ago) link

I love everything about Bad Batch. I think its pace is just right and I really enjoy the occasional slow, quiet (and sad!) episodes like at the beginning of the season and this week.

My only two gripes is that for a cartoon, sometimes it's just *too* dark. Why?? And it's hard to believe there's just a few episodes left of the entire series, as I feel like they are only just beginning to reveal where Omega's story will go.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 4 April 2024 23:45 (one month ago) link

Well it may be the end of the Batch but maybe not for Omega...we'll see!

GREAT episode yesterday -- and we get the Zillo Beast again!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2024 19:16 (one week ago) link

My kids leapt out of their seat at that reveal.

Coincidentally they’ve been rewatching Clone Wars with me (my first time), and we got to the episode where that plot element first appeared and they talked about utilizing it for cloning experiments… and according to my kids that never really came back around in the CW series so it’s pretty great to see it drop here.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 26 April 2024 01:26 (one week ago) link

And so The Bad Batch has wrapped up. I thought it was a good ending (a double ending, really) -- part of me had always hoped since they found that one isolated refuge that they'd end up there and just be able to live, and so it proved, and the final beat was a nice way to give a real sense that they actually DID find it, or most of them. If Omega shows up at some future point in something, I'd be all for it; Michelle Ang did a great job throughout.

One near-headcanon bit for me -- I was semi-convinced that the CX operative who found said refuge a while back, leading to Omega's recapture, might well have been a fully brainwashed/reprogrammed Tech, somehow, or perhaps a clone made from him or the like. So the fact that said operative wasn't and is now iced like the rest of Project Necromancer I really appreciated as a final beat, and similarly that Tech really is gone. Kinda rare in this universe, sometimes!

Anyway roll on Tales of the Empire this weekend and then a month to go to The Acolyte.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2024 20:17 (five days ago) link

Yes, great episode. Still feel like this show probably could have gone at least one more season but this was a satisfying wrap to the season and the coda was a nice touch to give it a bit more finality, for at least some of the characters.

Ned, my kids were also convinced that there was going to be a Tech reveal, and I’m so glad there wasn’t. It would have nullified how well done season 2 was. I’m glad they allowed that plot to stand.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 3 May 2024 01:50 (four days ago) link

I really think it's remarkable that of the four major animated series under Filoni's care, three of them are top-notch fantastic both as entertaining TV and building up the universe. (Resistance absolutely has its moments but felt more like a random obligation for the sequel trilogy.) Much as I appreciate him doing more on the live action side too, I absolutely hope there's more to come from him and the wider animation team; he pretty clearly is the major creative voice post-Lucas.

Tales From the Empire was a nice little fillip -- especially liked the arc of Barriss Offee given her path in Clone Wars, it was a good way to show where it all led; the Elspeth arc had its good points too and I did like how it touched on everything from Mandalorian to Ahsoka to even a little bit of Andor, in its own way.
