Drawing Practice: Give me a total of 100 ideas to draw to see if I get any better by the 100th drawing.

Apparently pottery students who just throw clay without any explicit instruction get competent really quickly compared to people who agonize over every pot, so I'm going to try to get better at drawing by spending less than 10 minutes drawing things other people suggest.

So please post your sketch requests (along with any photo references) and I'll try and see if this angst-free approach works. Feel free to join in if you also want to get good at art with low effort.

Philip, it looks like some are done in ink and some are done in charcoal. What media are you using, and how do you choose? Any preferred materials?

I took a local evening drawing class once and was pretty bad at the exercises (still lifes of bottles, blocks and such); this approach looks like more fun.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Thursday, 15 April 2021 22:17 (three years ago) link

The ink is just a uniball office gel pen on used printer paper. The DeVito one is on a tablet. I tried buying some fancy pencils but they never made me any better or inspired me to draw more than say those free pencils from ikea, but they're definitely nice to use. I'd say if you want to follow along, you should grab whatever is handy at the time -- the basic rule is to throw out and ignore any obstacle to just cranking out a drawing as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Of course if having your favorite gear at the ready inspires you to draw more, do that!

Francis, If you feel inspired to go longer, go longer!
The 10 minute thing is more to keep from feeling too precious about it, furiously erasing, crumpling drafts, etc...
The urgency also helps make a lot of decisions for you. Maybe you wanted to draw a full body but he works great as a bubblehead! But the shot clock is really flexible.

Z, What’s going on with the hex “coronation” scramble? Is it a new puzzle game you have invented?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 18:24 (two years ago) link

hahaha, nope! it's the Queen Bee puzzle from the NYT! i think it's pretty popular! my partner plays every morning and sometimes i help. you must spell as many words as possible using only the letters in the puzzle, and each word MUST use the letter in the center. you get bonus points if you find words that use every single letter, too. so when emily said "coronation", I immediately checked to see if it would be one of those perfect words, and it was!

god, i wish i had invented Queen Bee!

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 18:52 (two years ago) link

so in the puzzle above, other words would be:

COT
ORCA
CORONATION
TAINT
etc

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 18:53 (two years ago) link

oops, sorry - I always do that. TAINT wouldn't work because it doesn't have the center letter O

26(?) — the joker eats spaghetti

Clay, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 20:18 (two years ago) link

Karl, using a harder lead will help - what kind of pencil do you use? I used a Laurentien erasable pencil for those. I've seen people use a piece of paper between the drawing and the side of your hand and even cotton gloves with the fingers cut out. tbh i don't think i make too much contact with my drawing hand

francisF, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 20:48 (two years ago) link

Or use a pen! I don't think I touch the paper much with my hand either, I might worry about smudging for a half hour or more charcoal drawing but not for ten minutes with a pencil.

I'd like to join the thread if I may to get practice at drawing from imagination which is my biggest weakness.

wild!

i challenge you to make a drawing of M. Zuckerberg looking like even more of a dork than his US-flag-waving-while-riding-an-electric-hydrofoil video from earlier this week, if this interests you and is even possible <3

I feel like this is a failure as an imaginative drawing, a failure to meet the brief and even a failure as a likeness but failure is the basis of learning so here you go:

how are you feeling at the 30% mark? are they getting easier or is more like you're getting more efficient so it feels like you have more time?

Feeling a bit like Danny Glover, feeling a bit like Pauly Shore.
I don’t think I’m getting any faster or even better but I definitely feel more confident when starting a drawing that it’s going to be finished.

From Homemade Jokes

I have a homemade Far Side cartoon joke in my head, called something like "Clown Cemetery", which shows a row of burial plots and gravestones, except each plot has a pair of long clown shoes poking out of the earth (because the clowns are buried in their clown shoes, but not deep enough underground, haha?)

― Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, July 2, 2022 10:05 PM (fifteen minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

you should post the clown cartoon to Drawing Practice: Give me a total of 100 ideas to draw to see if I get any better by the 100th drawing.
