I'm excited for tonights premiere. Only because I missed the first one last year and regret not seeing Simon be an ass to the really bad people.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a new one already?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

CANNOT. FUCKING. WAIT.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Cannot wait. Fucking.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait! Fucking cannot!

Yoda (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Paula is supposed to be "tougher".

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Than leather?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

fucking, wait cannot.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I just want to be one of the judges that says one completely harsh sentence and makes em cry like babies.

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

what an awful job. "haha, i get paid to crush people's dreams on national television!"

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria, you seem to have misspelled "wonderful".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Can fucking wait.

NOT!!

I think being Simon would be the best job imaginable. He gets to make dreams come true as well as crushing them. But the crushing would be more fun.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if I'm gonna watch the whole dealie through but tonight's episode was hilarious as expected.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"You are the worst inger in New York City." HA.

The best part is that the guy wasn't even that bad!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the girl who sang "Fever". And what about the dude who refused to leave. It kind of made me think that some of these people are deliberately thrown in the mix. Who the hell in their right mind (if your that bad) would actually think they have a shot.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

So come on...who watched it? The two who stood out for me were the big boobs woman and the Frank Sinatra guy. But those two will never make it - they're not cookie-cutter enough.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

the girl who sang fever was sooooo cute. i think randy got a boner.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I was half watching and then got distracted... the part with the guy who wouldn't leave was PAINFUL and, like everyone else, I have to wonder if all those bad singers could tell that they were that bad.

I thought the twins had some wicked harmonies...

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The guy who wouldn't leave must've been there as a goof; I don't see how anyone could actually be that oblivious.

And yeah, the 'Fever' girlie was the best by far. Also the least likely of the Hollywood-bunch to be made a pop star, which is exactly why she should get an automatic bye to the final.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

That Eagle Eye Cherry cat wasn't bad. He did have a shitty appearance though.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't wait to watch the WHERE ARE THEY NOW? on those ppl next month.

Kangaroo Jaxx (Andy K), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Buck-Tooth sounded just like Jeffrey Osborne, which can be nothing but good. "Fever" girl, Frank Sinatra, the two heavier women and the twins were also fantastic.

There was one girl who was AVERAGE that they gushed over too much and Pimp Daddy would have been fine if he'd done the song in a lower key.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Do pimps cry?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the Doris Day like singer, but Paula was right: she was a little corny.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I felt bad for the sad pimp.

Kangaroo Jaxx (Andy K), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Do pimps cry?

This is what it sounds like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a fellow in my old neighborhood who drove a car with a big sticker in the rear window that read "Pimpin' Ain't Easy." So apparently they do face lots of difficulties, and I'm sure tears are inevitable.

JD (JND), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The twins weren't skinny and Romanian, were they?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

the sad pimp. Maybe he can pimp his ass back to Kansas City.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, at the very least, he wasn't a particularly RESOURCEFUL pimp.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like, okay dude, so you're stranded: STOP CRYING AND GO GET SOME HOES.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the teen who wasn't slutty was actually kind of slutty.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Not Christina Aguilera slutty, but sent-home-from-school slutty.

I can't believe that judge said to one guy (I forgot all the names), "A little Broadway...." like that was a BAD thing.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

They always say atupid shit like that. That's why I'd NEVER use Randy Jackson as a record producer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, JACK OSBOURNE is more open-minded about music outside of his "comfort zone" than Randy is!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Randy is a real ass. I get a little pissed off at some of their criticisms. Who the fuck do they think they are? Who does Randy produce anyways? And Paula getting critical, gimmee a break.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"Play ball."

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What about the freaky girl who begged and manipulated them til they let her go to the next round of the competition? I had the feeling that if Randy had said no she would have went on a psychotic rampage.

I have not seen the second half of last night's show, but I had heard just about everybody from Detroit was terrible. Is this true?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

the most amazing thing is seeing some of these people let thru who were "eh.. all right" turn into supervocalists
(make that: i hope... ...will be...)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Detroit was DISMAL, Nicole. They only picked 22 people.

I'm very glad that pestering girl made them give her another chance because she can sing, she just got nervous. I was also very impressed that Simon saw that. He's not an executive for nothing! My big surprise was Mr Marine, who actually made me enjoy an O-Town song!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The stripper/singer was a friggin riot. What superhero was he supposed to be?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Never fear, good citizens! SIR PIMPS-A-LOT is here to save the day!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(And I can't believe how mad he got at Randy's suggestion! Dude, you could make like $100K in your FIRST YEAR if you're really that good.)

The mother who threatened to rip off Simon's nuts was CLASSIC, but not as classic as the castrati. If anyone in the classical world was watching that, he's going to get snapped up and trained as a countertenor.

AND can we have a moment for Insanely Happy Girl??? "I love you guys, you're great! Come on, give me the abuse! I still love you...!" [then, in the confessional] "F*CK THIS SH*T!!!!! *birds flipping everywhere*"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

And lets not forget the boxer at the end. Lady Tiger, or whatever she called herself. I think she was a plant.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

how many people did they pick total? (the first time i wrote that i put "how many people did they pimp total?")

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how many they have so far, something like 150.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

What happened to the previous winner?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

She has been packed in oil and bottled awaiting revival on the anniversary show in ten years' time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin (the runner up) and Kelly (the winner) are doing a movie musical called From Justin to Kelly. It looks like it will be an updated version of Grease. Make of this what you will.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Please please PLEASE tell me everything about Nicole's post is a joke. Especially the title.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear on my cd collection I spake the truth.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Not a joke. They should have titled it Grease (Up Your Backside And Prepare For The Twenty-Inch Pole). Honestly, is there any good that can come from this musical?

Kelly is apparently recording her album. One would think that she would have tried to have the recording done by now so that it could be mixed and released to coincide with the premier of the new AI season, but that's just me thinking all crazy and stuff.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Alternate title: Hey, It's Better Than Hacking Off Your Nuts With A Hacksaw

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it though?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the irony!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear on my cd collection I spake the truth.

Should I hope it's a lie so I can get all Nicole's CDs or do I remain her friend and hope that it is true so she can keep them? DECISIONS.

Grease (Up Your Backside And Prepare For The Twenty-Inch Pole)

This I would watch.

Hey, It's Better Than Hacking Off Your Nuts With A Hacksaw

This I would not.

That's the irony!

Irony is dead. We live in the shade of its revenant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

ILX musical! Come on! It's our destiny!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

They should title it "Grease up Justins Curly Pineapple Head and Watch Him Fisheye Randy Jackson."

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

some talent last night. Also some high comedy, especially that troll like dude doing Madonna. And that barefoot hippy bathrobe wearer.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

HERCULES, HERCULES!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"Like A Virgin"-dude was just FRIGHTMARISH.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

he looked like this kid "Froggy" I went to college with. I saw him and immediately wanted to hurt him.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Then he turned the tables and hurt us with his creepy-androgynous monotone frightsong.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah he was a strange one indeed. What about that geeky guy that could really belt. He was pretty damn good. And was the girl that sang "Forever My Ass" a joke vote?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The geeky guy, the big guy from Alabama and freaky high-voice anti-Justin were all great. The "shove it up your ass" girl was HILARIOUS and I'm glad they put her through.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah i forgot about the "99" guy from Bama. He was really good.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

heheh I was complaining to Matt about how RUDE they were to the dork with the pipes - and he's like don't be such a putz, you have to work a LOOK. they need "Idol" material, the whole package! i agreed but this is like what, round 2? how many successful pop stars brought their own look to the record companies?

Madonna troll i eventually convinced myself WAS serious about the whole thing - let us never speak of it again!

seems to me like at this stage of the game they're putting a high premium on just being able to push the air out with some gusto and authority, who cares if you hit the notes exactly. which makes it even clearer that the only reason they sent the awful awful awful blonde "attractive" one through is cause they thort she was a hottie.

"bohemian rhapsody girl" -- classic or dud?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC. She was excellent!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly the word she would use, Dan!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I would listen to an album by that guy that sang "Somebody to Love". Yesterday's episode was yet another classic and I feel sorry for those who had no Paula to offer positive remarks!

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Somebody To Love" dude was pretty good, he was just far too high on the freak-meter for this competition.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I like how he drank Paula's magical "talent" elixor.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Candice Coleman the best.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Frenchie & that other girl who sang with her were good, too.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I take back what I said about Frenchy - the longer this thing goes on, the more she stands out. Also, I am glad that the punky chick made it. Nerd-boy also made it, Big Alabama guy made it, Texas blond woman made it. I can't believe that party animal fake-Justin made it. Or the hideous rocker guy.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The "Like A Virgin" guy has made me seriously question my life. If he could be that deluded about his abilities, it made me wonder if I had any similar delusions or blind spots in my own life. I am over thinking this, probably.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I am taking Kerry's comments to mean that the singers were respectively Serge Gainsbourg, Kelly Osbourne, John Dwinell, that one 'Elvira' guy from the Oak Ridge Boys, Renee Zellweger, Carrot Top and Gene Simmons.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

FRENCHY AMAZES ME. WITH HER FRENCHINESS

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 30 January 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

that and she just f*cking rocks...

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 30 January 2003 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

too bad the blonde waif and gangly-cute Miami girl (who we never got to hear sing?) both got cut. at least the sultry waitress is still in.

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Going back to the Idol website, here's who I'd pick for my final 10:

Julia DeMato
Kimberly Caldwell
Frenchie Davis
Kimberley Locke
Josha Gracin
Patrick Lake
Rickey Smith
Ruben Studdard
Vanessa Olivarez
Candice Coleman

Honorable mention to Clay Aiken, Equoia Coleman, Sylvia Chibiliti and Bettis Richardson. I'd be supporting Corey Clark as well if he wasn't an IRRESPONSIBLE FUCK-OFF.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(I'm going to be mad disappointed if Vanessa goes out before the final 10.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

So what happened to "Fever" girl?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

That wasn't Candice Coleman?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

she was this little red headed girl, no?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

OH! Then that was Vanessa.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, thats not her. Maybe she didn't make it past the second round?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Going back to the pictures, I'm almost sure it was Candice. Damn, I wish I had that show on tape...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

The Fever girl got cut. She was tiny and more blondish-red, whereas the Texas woman is more strapping and bleach blonde.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

She couldn't belt, anyway. I knew she wasn't going to last. I wish they'd get rid of that rocker guy.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I think my selections for top 10 would be very similar to Dan Perry's except I would put Clay or Corey in place of Joshua.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay Aiken is testing my faith by listing Hourglass by James Taylor as his favorite album BUT I'M STILL BEHIND YOU, YOU LITTLE DORK!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

why does j.d.adams list "favorite female pop artist" as N/A?

jones (actual), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

u&k since we missed this week's episode: did the big, blonde-haired black girl make it?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

frenchie? yes but her hair is red now

jones (actual), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

hooray!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

This competition is already better than last year, as I could only find 6 people I liked in the final 30 and this year there are 14.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

this is on now! must go!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

oh damn, the TV and video are in use :(

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i loved how the heavy-metaller had prepared a whole schtick about his value-add, how he was bringing the "spirit of rock n roll" to American Idol because "Americans love to rock" or some nonsense like that - i can't remember what he sang but it was so NOT that

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, cut Meatloaf some slack, Tracer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

you laugh now but you'll miss him next week when he's gone

jones (actual), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Meatloaf! christ almighty there IS a precedent

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish they'd get rid of that rocker guy.

Simon is a rockist

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 1 February 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I think, um, last season I was embarrassed about watching but this time I am going to call up and vote as long as Frenchie's in it. yay DC. DC needs a pop star.

daria g, Saturday, 1 February 2003 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

what number do i call to vote for patrick's dad?

jones (actual), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm voting - I don't care if I have to pay. People are going to call up and vote for that Texas woman and I thought she was flat and annoying. My vote goes to #4.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

tonight:
#1 Trenyce
#2 Charles

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

we voted for #4. they all kinda sucked tonight.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

also, the big black guy sang waaaaaay to close to toni braxton to be comfortable. fuck his outfit: his freaky gender-bending vocalese will never be embraced by middle america.

(nb: he sounded pretty good.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

What big black guy, Steve Albini?

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Boy, last night was so bad that nobody has anything to say.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Too true, Kerry. I was pretty disappointed by Tuesday's show. I liked a lot of these people going in, but I was really only impressed by Charles's performance. I'm not sure what happened.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 6 February 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Julia did a good job, too. Patrick would have been fine if he didn't sound so creepy singing that Toni Braxton song (and if I wasn't giggling at the "black gospel man who is gay" stereotypes zipping through my head as I watched his performance).

I am not surprised that Charles and Julia went through, but Trenyce was a big surprise to me; I thought she was fantastic Tuesday night. Kimberly STANK STANK STANK STANK STANK STANK up the stage; it was pretty embarrassing. And poor Bettis!

(Having said all that, everyone was better than Jim Verraros.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I voted for Trenyce, but I am *thrilled* that neither Kimberley nor J.D. Adams got in, and that's all I care about. I was afraid, because they seem to have huge fan clubs online. Kimberley bugs the fuck outta me in so many ways - I'm glad I don't have to look at her overplucked eyebrows any more (I hope).

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked charles. he sang one of my favorite songs (stevie) and sang it really really well. i thought there would be no way he'd make it, due to the whole "image" thing, but i was really genuinely pleased when he made it.

megan p, Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I felt almost exactly the same way, Megan. I was also pleasantly surprised (but slightly annoyed) that the two best performances came from people who, to my knowledge, have had ZERO camera exposure up to this point (Charles, Trenyce).

I was expecting so much more from Kimberly. When she got out there and sucked ass, I was genuinely surprised. (Looks like there won't be a Nickie this year in the top ten!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Julia won because the paisani out east came through for her. Then I had a dream that American Idol was controlled by the mafia and that the whole thing was rigged for Julia.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

oops. "paesani".

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Julia won because she sang well. Admittedly, I think that Trenyce should have won, but based on the performance Tuesday plus the snippets of performances we've seen from the past several weeks, Julia didn't sneak through on a sympathy clause or anything; she CAN sing.

Poor Patrick. A less creepy song choice and he might have had a chance.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Ruben was awesome tonight!

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

My vote's going to Candice Coleman because she's adorable. And a good singer, yeah.

Mandee, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Ruben busting out the Carpenters rules!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Reuben and Kimberley were standouts last night (SHOCKA). Honorable mentions go to Candace, Clay and Hadas. The Anita Baker girl was too Anita Baker and WHEW did the pretty boy suck or what?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

my top choice: Ruben (#6)
runner-up: Candice (#2)

both adorable and easily outshone a couple of more technically meticulous performances. agree with Simon that personality/soul/spunk counted for more last night.

interesting the way Ruben let the song, "Superstar", breathe - opting for a less rhythmically-exacting performance but absolutely in command of the melody lines/texture/connection-with-viewers. he does sound 'very Luther', but much much warmer. hearing those final runs/cadences, I was like "damn, turn this man loose on any song!"

hope they both make it thru

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I want Ruben, Candice and Kimberley in the finals (obviously; look at my pre-finals top ten). In general I really agreed with the judges, particularly when Simon basically said that EVERYONE this year would have kicked the asses of most of last year's top ten (really, does anyone besides Kelly, Tamyra and MAYBE RJ at a stretch compare to these folks, Bettis aside?).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys - Frenchie is off Idol!! I am so pissed!

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and last night - I voted for Ruben, Kimberley and Clay. I couldn't get through very much for Ruben. Kimberley was good, but I wish she'd try another song. Clay had weird pronunciation, but I had to vote for him on behalf of someone else. I thought Candice was overrated - cute, but boring and trying too hard.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

This just showed up in my inbox - sign the petition for Frenchie!!!

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/frenchie/petition.html

She was really the only reason I was watching any more. :(

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK.

Okay, that's not right at all. Is there a clause in the competition rules that says people who have worked at adult entertainment companies are ineligible? Isn't America supposed to be oting for this? Why not let US decide if we disapprove enough to boot her from the competition?

It's the Vanessa Williams debacle all over again...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I'm out for the next one. Damn it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Was she a porno star or something?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone who signed the petition claimed to know and have worked with Frenchie. This person said that the site was "tame". Besides, Nikki was a stripper - how is that different?

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Clay would make a really good Broadway star.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Dan - I saw your sig! The way I look at it, even if she did violate some clause or other, they should have taken care of it before she made it to the final 32. Otherwise, they're getting people's hopes up. They're the ones who failed here. I'd like to see the details regarding this "site". I'm hearing it was "soft porn" modeling or something.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

This is k-wack!!!!!!!!!!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay looked like he was in Felt

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like we're all mostly in agreement - my picks were Kimberley and Ruben. Hadas and Clay could be great too. I thought Candice was really boring though and I don't like the tone of her voice.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yet its ok for fox to show a foot fetish bondage queen with no worries. Got to love em.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

As long as no one as bad as Jim "A Voice Only a Deaf Mother Could Love" V. gets a pass into the final ten, I'll be happy.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think anyone that bad is in the final 32, Andy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Frenchie's been disappeared! She's been wrongly deemed a sex terrorist by Fox! Free Frenchie!

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard it on tv...straight out of the producer's mouth - she was booted off because they didn't want those pictures showing up with the American Idol logo plastered on them. Apparently, she told them about the site when she initially auditioned. So it was a morals thing. Grrrrr!

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That's so fucking shady. If they were concerned about that, they should have bounced her the instant she told them.

FUCKERS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I love how people on the internet are criticizing her for posing for "kiddie porn". I thought the whole point of being outraged at "kiddie porn" was that the "kiddies" were victims.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I do not understand the outrage. Frenchie has gotten a raw deal, esp. since they allowed stripper Nikki in the competition. As long as there aren't pictures floating around it's okay to be nekkid for a living? I don't get Fox's logic one bit.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Clearly the answer is stealth nudism.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently the were concerned about nude Frenchie pictures with the AI logo on them flooding the Internet, which of course we MUST NOW MAKE HAPPEN.

(Back on the show, America does the right thing HOORAY! First time I've completely agreed with the voting on this show, and kicking Jim out of the final 10 doesn't count because he shouldn't have been there in the first place.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Performers from yesterday who impressed: Equoia, George, Vanessa
Performers who have done better in the past: Rickey, Vanessa

All in all, Randy and Simon were absolutely right in saying that they were all polished, professional performances that didn't get anyone too excited. Joei and I have determined that the vocal coach should be FIRED AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

Based on last night's performances, Equoia and George should go on. Overall, I think it's going to be a toss-up between Equoia, George, Vanessa, Rickey and Jordan. It's too close between the five of them to accurately call.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved Vanessa and her big booty. I hated all of the songs.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The dude who sang Michael Bolton needed to be STONED.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Right, because who else but a stoned person would choose to sing Michael Bolton? (har har)

Nobody stood out for me at all yesterday, except Vanessa. She's definitely one of my favorites out of everything we've seen. I also remember thinking that Rickey has done WAY better before that night.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Rickey has absolutely been better than he was list night, hence the comment about the vocal coach needing to go. Dude's been studying opera for the past year; you'd think he would know SOMETHING about placement and switching between head-voice and chest-voice. I'm sure some of it was nerves, but his basic technique was so different from what he'd been doing in previous shows that I think the coach bears some blame.

If someone comes in and knows what they're doing, DON'T FUCK THEM UP AND MAKE THEM WORSE. Fer crissake, if he wanted to do hackneyed cheesy hand gestures, LET HIM; making him learn something new will make him look uncomfortable, unsure and take his focus off of his singing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanessa and especially George (what a voice!) were probably the best performances last night. Equoia seemed to be having difficulty with her voice, despite the obvious passion in her delivery.

however, having the benefit of TiVO and being able to rewatch performances, Kimberly is by far my favourite out of the whole bunch. and not just because she's absolutely stunning (!)

so I'd pick George & Vanessa to go thru
and Kimberly plus Equoia to return for the wildcard.

(sure hope they pick Treynce from group 1 for wildcard show and wouldn't mind hearing Candice again either)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My current wildcard potentials are Candice, Trenyce, Hadas, and Clay.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

last night was just terrible. the show ended and nancy looked at me and said "uh, so who was, uh, the numbers...?" and neither of us had any real recollection of the performances or which one went with which number

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

was the last guy george? i can't remember his name. he was pretty awesome though, only one i actually liked. and he was last so he got all the bitching from the judges, not fair.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

the clip they showed of the 17 year old towards the end was horrifying

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Which 17 year old? There was a guy and a girl (both of whom thought they were much better than they actually were).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the guy, it was the way his neck veins protruded

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I was too busy hoping an anvil would drop on his head for choosing to sing Michael Bolton.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we just take a moment and marvel at how accurate my top ten picks have been so far? Five out of six!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed - this week you got the TOP 3 right!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Top 3)
well, in essence
George was of course tragically overlooked
he's partly a case of vocals over image
dramatic stance/presence but, hand-at-gut, seeming to be giving everything over to vocal expression

the wild card show should be a killer
hope the judges are with us on who should compete

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I still miss the like a virgin troll.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Nasheka blew me away last night! possibly my fave voice of the show so far. with that much emotional depth, I don't care if she moves or not.

Corey seemed the strongest combination of performance + vocal (though only towards the end, when he relaxed). his voice is love-hate for me, last night more to the positive side.
Joshua nails the vocal, performs well, but is too boyband-bland.

some of the judges comments were excessively dismissive (as usual) and it was hilarious when Juanita, who was pretty good despite controversial songchoice, tore into them. the look on Simon and Randy's faces! they met their match...

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed most of the show. I thought Corey stank last night; almost every descending interval larger than a third was F-L-A-T wrong (although credit to him, he pulled himself back into the key).

I really don't care who moves on in this group now that Frenchie's gone as long as it isn't ASHLEY. Ew.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, what was with the judges saying Corey was 100% in tune?

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I *heart* American Idol. I can't wait to catch up with it all on Friday night.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

no one's commented yet about the sneak preview of Kelly & Justin duet aired a week ago. sounded amazing to me: transcendent MOR... Kelly does Elizabeth Fraser stuff!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly does Elizabeth Fraser stuff!

If you lie to me on this point, your ass is grass.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly does Elizabeth Fraser stuff!

Must've missed this bit. I was too caught up in the gaffe they made by having Kelly not face Justin in the boat.

I hope Nasheka advances.

Too bad Chip's last name isn't Davis instead of Days.

(Haha -- I went on to the AI site and the theme started blaring IMMEDIATELY after Evolution by Cat Power finished playing on my computer.)

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

haha not actual Cocteau riffs but similar vocal swoops, filigree. their voices are pretty similar (which I missed for a long time).

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't like anyone on the show last night! Corey was the least bad. It seems like most of the people just BELT everything. Song after song of loud-as-you-can is just annoying.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

some people (the host with the BEAUTY QUALIFIES ME tee) are just so L.A. that they simply couldn't be from anywhere else!

Aaron A., Thursday, 27 February 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Nasheka and Trenyce for the wildcard show! looked like some other good ones too who got passed over for the semifinals.

now I feel they've only missed Kimberly Kelsey and Stephanie Schultz (aside from unjustly disqualified Frenchie).

wildcard show should be the best!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

They're taking FOUR from the wildcard show! (So basically, it's Clay, Kimberley, Trenyce and Random Fourth Person.)

6 out of 8 for the top ten isn't too bad, huh?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Clay has a lock on it. Trenyce will make it, too. It's kind of unfortunate that last night wasn't so good. The people who didn't make the cut the first time but who got called back anyway all sucked.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, I've never watched this before, hopefully never will again, but last night I saw 5 minutes of this show, and that little redhaired guy is really really creepy. He is Satan.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

deserving: Clay then Trenyce then Chip

re: reaction to Trenyce and Chip
does Simon even have a clue about R&B, Gospel, etc?

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

now I feel they've only missed Kimberly Kelsey and Stephanie Schultz (aside from unjustly disqualified Frenchie).

of course I forgot George - man did they blow that one!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i am continually baffled by their reaction to certain contestants, like the little blonde mutant muppet who would have fit in JUST FINE in a band with four other little blonde mutant muppets and who they just EVISCERATED

am i the only one for whom clay resembles ric astley more and more every time he takes the stage?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

No - there's a thread on the Television Without Pity board called "Rick Astley Lives". To be fair, I do think he's a better singer than Rick Astley.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(btw, i think clay's essential rick astleyness & acclaim is in direct relation to paul's question above about simon "getting" r&b and gospel)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I finally figured out who Clay reminds me of!

http://www.idolonfox.com/contestants/clay/images/photo-v-5.jpghttp://www.greenplastic.com/multimedia/images/thom/thom136.jpg

The look I mean, not the voice.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 6 March 2003 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I think it's been conclusively proven that Simon is an idiot. What in GOD'S NAME was he thinking???? That girl was GOD-AWFUL. If I was Chip or Nasheka (or any of them, really) I would be spitting BULLETS.

It was completely asinine and idiotic of them to bring back singers who didn't make it past the prelims instead of using people who made an impression on the voters (Equoia, Patrick) or people who were actually GOOD (Candice, Hadas, George). Also, they need to seriously consider firing the vocal coach who is CLEARLY doing more damage than good (witness what she's done to Rickey and Kimberly Caldwell).

Having said all that, the overall ability of this year's final twelve is SO FAR ABOVE last year it isn't funny. In fact, if it wasn't for Carmen and Kimberly C, I'd say there isn't any vocal dead weight in this year's finalist pool (and I full expect them both to be the casualties of next week's vote).

Odds are that the final four will be Kimberley L, Reuben, Clay and Josh. My gut says Reuben's gonna win.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Carmen! Ugh! What the hell was Simon thinking? Not only was her performance on Tuesday bad, her surprise performance on Wednesday was as bad as some of the people in the original auditions! Granted, if I were her I would have been surprised to make it and wouldn't have been prepared to sing, but still... she'll be the first off, almost certainly.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay is actually Erlend Oye.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Which contestant was it that was arrested for assault? They didn't include his picture in the story about it so I was trying to figure out who it was.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't think Ruben's thing was all that - lotta voice but kind of bellowy, no?

Clay Aiken has disappointed me for the last time. you can take the boy out of the youth center, but you can't take the youth center out of the boy. what smarm!

Carmen was best of the bottom-tier perfs, could she be an underdog?

TRENYCE!!!!!!!!! holy mackerel!

(Bohemian Rhapsody girl disappointing as well, she looked at little freaked)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm surprised and amazed that no one sucked; I was expecting Carmen to be horrifying and she wasn't.

Poor Julia. And also Simon is an idiot for saying that Vanessa won't have a long career because she's too Bette Midler (who's had a long career) and Clay sounded like he was in "Motown: The Musical" (which isn't negative).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I understand what Simon meant by that comment re: Clay - pure showmanship. didn't feel like his heart was in the song - and I'd rather hear a crap-sounding vocalist with heart than an empty virtuoso. theory: he's become too confident. maybe the first criticism will better his game. none of this takes away from his previous performance - an absolute highlight of the season so far.

Ruben and Trenyce delivered as expected. Ruben's voice exerts a gravitational force over songs - rolling right over - bending them to his will. glad to see Trenyce finally get the all-round credit she deserves.

but it was Rickey who got to me last night. by the time he finished singing I was smiling - inside and out

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

AAAAAAARGH. Bye Vanessa, we hardly knew ye.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Who did you want to get the boot, Dang? I personally was hoping it would be Julia.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

same here Nicole: Vanessa outperformed Julia

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Totally. At least Vanessa infused some personality into her performance, Julia sang like she had been lobotomised.

Plus, I was looking forward to Julia's sister wagging her finger at America and sneering "Respect!" like she did at Kimberly Caldwell.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha! funny how Kim Caldwell, who started off as 'bad sorority sister' looks more comfortable in the pop idol role.
another theory: combine Kim Caldwell's raspy voice and Vanessa's fashion flamboyance and you get: Nikki McKibbin!
Carmen's vocal sound = Britney Spears + country

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanted Julia or Carmen to go. Vanessa had one of the top five performances last night (the other four being Rickey, Reuben, Clay, and much as hate to admit it, Kimberly Caldwell).

Corey Clark is lucky that he's got a high voice is all I've got to say.

(Having said that, even the worst perfomances Tuesday were above-average for last year.)

I am amazed at Reuben's charisma. The really hilarious thing about it is that I knew several guys in college who looked like Reuben who exuded similar charisma (plus there's rising star Anthony Anderson). Apparently the most charasmatic phenotype on Earth is a heavy black man with a gap between his front teeth.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! Mike Tyson = pure charisma!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, Carmen was surprisingly good. But maybe that's because I was not expecting much out of her.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Carmen was surprisingly good. I still thought she was weak compared to the others, though. (Compared to Ryan Starr, Jim Verraros, AJ what-his-face and Christina Christian, she was great.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

it made me cry

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

It made me cry on Tuesday's show, that's what scaring me. Am I such a mess lately that I get that emotionally involved in a silly reality show?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, it didnt really make me cry...it made nancy pretty depressed though that vanessa got cut so early ("what does this say about the future of possibly seeing people like myself on television?")

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Esp. since Vanessa was clearly a better singer than Julia.

Also, a dog food commercial made me cry yesterday. Wtf? I have been crying nonstop this week.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm going to make the completely UNcontroversial statement that if ruben wins (as I am now predicting) and he was a 350 lb black (or any color) WOMAN then it might be somewhat shocking. as for now, dan's assessment pretty well holds true: fat black guys are one of the most charismatic "types" in popular music.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, a dog food commercial made me cry yesterday. Wtf? I have been crying nonstop this week.

One hell of a commercial, I guess! *good thoughts for Nicole*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

this happened on the Sopranos 2 seasons ago, to the mom, she was watching an Alpo commercial, she caught herself and actually snapped out loud "what the hell is WRONG with you?"

agreed that Ruben is totally awesome but there's a fragility to the others that makes me pull for them more

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

fragility = clay's atrocious habit of looking like he's recieving an enema when recieving compliments

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

If Ruben showed his tits on an amateur porn site would he have gotten kicked off?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the way they mouth their number in the interview chair! sheesh we can read (and hear), your lipsync attempts are distracting at best and at worst make you look mildly autistic. ARE YOU LISTENING, IDOLS?? Also some of them try and approximate their number with their fingers at the same time! so at the exact moment that millions of Americans are making their decision the contestants usually look like slightly lobotomized gang members.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

*good thoughts for Nicole*

Don't bother. I'm not upset or unhappy, just strangely emotional.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

just think of Ruben's tits. That will make you happy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Or at the very least strangely emotional.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 March 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

While watching on Tuesday night I just realized that I have been getting the lyrics really wrong to "What A Feeling" for more than a decade.

The lyrics ARE:
"Take your passion / And make it happen.

They are NOT:
"Take your pants down / and make it happen.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 21 March 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, AI2 has brought sadness into the world.

I was a little surprised that Charles got the boot, but that was mostly because I was expecting Julia to go again. I forsee her as this year's Teflon Contestant (aka The New Nikki McKibbin). I'm not trying to say that Charles didn't deserve to go, though; his performance sucked serious goat anus.

If the next people to go aren't Kimberly Caldwell, Julia, Corey and Carmen, I will be very annoyed, seeing as they are CLEARLY a tier below the other performers (and all should have gotten the boot before poor Vanessa).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Julia is annoying the living shit outta me. She just looks like she's in incredible pain all the time. She should get a major deduction for total lack of presence or dancing ability.

I have a soft spot for Charles - he's adorable, so I'm sorry that he had to go.

And Corey sucks shit, I'm sorry. He needs some serious training before he sings in public anywhere.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

julia is teflon fo sho. she is a tall, skinny, tan, toothy blonde with good skin = she has something america likes that the rest of this freakshow doesn't. i can easily see her making it to 4 or even 3 left.

nb: i wuv the freakshow.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

???? Julia isn't blonde, though. The two blondes are Carmen (aka Goat Girl) and Kimberly C. (aka Throaty McShouts).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, I think you have Julia confused with Kimberley Caldwell. Julia is the Italian New Jersey hairdresser girl. I don't blame you - she's forgettable.

What cracks me up are all of Simon's comments about how this isn't a theme park and this isn't Broadway, nor is it a cruise ship, WHEN THAT IS TOTALLY WHAT MOST OF THESE PERFORMANCES ARE. Especially when they all sing together - it's like a Six Flags revue.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon is an idiotic twat. I loved how he was all dissing people and saying, "Look, Kelly clarkson is going to blow you away, she's such a megatalent, blah blah blah blah buy her album so I can keep my job", and then Kelly came out and sang like a dying duck.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

haha whoops, yr right. actually i DID know who you guys were talking about, and i still got her mixed up. this is not a good sign.

carmen is an odd one. they seem to vacilate between using her as a punching bag (always with the "when yr older" card) and saying they "made the right decision", usually when i can't see any difference between her performances.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I just want to go back to Feb 27 where I picked three of the four wild cards. HOW COME I'M NOT IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS??? I mean, 9 out of 12. Damn, I'm good.

Carmen is VERY odd. I keep getting the feeling that people are afraid to vote her out because they see her as a victim of Simon's cruel prank on the AI2 producers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

haha joke's on simon if she wins the fucking thing (pipe dream i know, but then again did anyone really peg kelly to win it last year in the second week?)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I had Kelly as a serious threat by week 3. I thought the final two was going to be Kelly and Tamyra (imagine the movie "From Tamyra To Kelly" if that had happened; TATU EAT YER ______ OUT).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

is it just me or did kelly look like she'd gained a little weight this past week? (and therefore gotten even hotter.) (she also looked like she had been beaten: not so hot.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

hey I'm late on this - cos I was out of town last week
but Rickey amazed again - even more so!!!

episode really showed how powerful the lineup is this year - putting Ruben, Trenyce, Clay all in a row
Kimberley Locke catapulted herself back into the front rank with one of the most emotionally powerful performances so far
Joshua is less interesting to me than the front runners but has proven that he's just as consistent

Carmen was surprisingly good!
George has sweet voice but lacks punch - power
still the bottom 3 were Corey, Kim Caldwell and Julia

once again Julia should have been the one to go
nothing personal, but I bet there'll be a collective cheer when she does

Rickey is my fave now - even above Ruben !
he's harnassed that flickering plasmic voice into the most exquisite feeling

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we have a moment to discuss the fact that Trenyce's real name is LASHUNDRA COBBINS?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Cobbins? Cobblers!

Joshua is less interesting to me than the front runners but has proven that he's just as consistent

Josh is decent, but I wouldn't exactly call him consistent. He really changed styles dramatically in one week!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but he was good at both of them (and really, if you're doing a Motown song with Motown-style backing music, you don't want to roll out all Waylon Jennings-esque).

I now want KC to stay in the competition so I can call her Throaty McShouts some more.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i just realized that ricky's voice is the perfect distillation of a long forgotten vocal style: the late 80s gay male house diva. (seriously, i was listening to ten city last week and he immediately popped to mind.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Rickey = THE NEW SYLVESTER!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess is completely otm about Rickey.

Yeah, but he was good at both of them (and really, if you're doing a Motown song with Motown-style backing music, you don't want to roll out all Waylon Jennings-esque).

Yeah, but at the auditions, etc. he never sang like that! It was just a bit odd. I wonder if the producers told him to start singing like that so that he'd stand out more.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's more likely that he always sang like that, but went for a more pop sound to appeal to the pop-biased judges. I heard country inflections in his take on that O-Town song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Joshua's pop sound, though perfectly delivered, always struck me (ow!) as bland/emotionally-blank but country seems to add some edge. though he'll still have to fight to be more than the king of karaoke.

country-rock acted as a great equaliser - the worst improved while the best struggled to sound more than laidback. Rickey and Kimberley Locke stood out for me again, looking for and finding emotional resonance.

ever notice how some folks - Clay, Kim C - appear to get more/better camera angles/work? one contrast on this show is between performers who put more into the visual side of their performance and those who turn inwards to the song. I prefer the latter but the former may make better TV - for some...

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I fear for Trenyce. I liked her performance but I suspect that America will boot her out for not being blonde/singing Faith Hill.

Carmen is FRIGHTMARISH. Someone stop her before she warbles at us again! (Too bad America isn't mean enough to vote someone out on their birthday... COME ON AMERICA PROVE ME WRONG)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

thorts:

josh's great transformation will buy him some short-run time but will eventually cost him.

trenyce's eyes are TOO DAMN BIG and she doesn't do anything with them; everytime they focus on her face she's looks like something out of the children's television workshop

kim c - shouty mc shouts. "you could for where these shoes i found at your job interview" "and scuff up the topless dancin runway? you best take em back from when you got em."

carmen - i still don't get it: she gives the same mediocre performance every week and yet their opinion remains wildly different from week to week. in fact, all of the judging this year has been a bit suspect

ricky has a wonderful voice; too bad he's totally out of step with the current pop market

julia: an improvement, but that's a bit like saying that this war is an improvement on vietnam. still think she won't get cut tho

the black girl who's name i can't remember: that type of song is her metier, but i still can't see her doing much of anything

corey: DIE DIE DIE YOU THUG MUPPET. his whole schtick - going from his slurred lower register "singing" to the upper registers - is all he's got and it will eventually cost him

ruben and clay are the same beast: both great "performers" who walk on stage and flip a switch and suddenly this Presence comes out of them. the difference is that with ruben it never seems forced and he exudes this warm gravity that clay never could. i hate clay a little more every week.

interesting that ruben has the same problem as ricky in a way: there's too much blues roughness in his voice to play with the current neuter-range of modern american r&b. he ages 10-20 years the minute he opens his mouth to sing, and i wonder if his continued refusal to change his outfit isn't a reflection of his rebelling against that.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister voted for Ruben 13 times! I think she is in lurve.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Kimberley Locke is MY GURL FO REAL, yo. You better RECKANIZE.

Throaty wasn't too bad this week. Bottom three should be Julia, Carmen and Josh. How come no one has commented on the fact that Josh is in his alleged genre, yet ran around so much he sounded like an asthmatic 80-year-old and was wearing the world's WORST cowboy hat?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Nooo! Corey is definitely in the bottom three along with Julia and Carmen. Corey's performance was miserable and asshat-tastic. Josh was not much better, but better than Corey at least.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Corey was fourth-worst, I think. I agreed with the judges that it was the best he'd done to date; it was the first time I'd heard him sound connected to the center of his tone while he was singing and one of the few times where his "flip into dog-bothering section of range" actually worked.

I also thought Julia was the best she'd ever sung last night, but she was still outsung by most of the others.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I loathe that blonde bint Kimberley. Look at her. She is EVIL and needs taking down a few pegs

My faves are non-bint Kimberley and Rooooooooben

Corey is atrocious and I can't watch him without cringing and remembering his attempt at schmoozing Plastic Paula to the strains of Kiss From A Rose

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That rendition should have been called "A Severe Bludgeoning About The Head And Shoulders From A Rose".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

is clay the one who looks like thom yorke?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Clay also looks like Fieval, making his "Somewhere Out There" choice for movie night especially grand.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

clay looks like he should be wearing dungarees and chewing straw

(yes, in other words)

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't make it in time, who got booted?

I am for Clay all the way.

Jade, Thursday, 27 March 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed it because I was at work (GRRRRR), but Julia finally caught the axe. Carmen has officially become the Teflon Contestant (TM). I predict next week she knocks out Josh or Corey.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

What was weird was the way Kimberley Caldwell started BAWLING her eyes out and looked like she was on the verge of collapse when she found out Julia was eliminated. I was also shocked that Rickey was in the bottom three -- he was one of the best from Tuesday night, I thought.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting article about Joshua Gracin. Almost makes me want to vote for him to spare his butt.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't believe julia got booted!

carmen is supernatural

in a cthulu sense

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently, Corey has been kicked off. I wonder if Trenyce will get the boot as well.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, that's stupid. He should have gotten the boot for sucking.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be wary of April Fool's shenanigans.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfortunately (or fortunately, for Corey-haters like myself), Reuters is reporting this as well.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

In the past, when a contestant has been booted, the AI website has done a complete "Eraser" job on them, as if they never existed. That hasn't happened with Corey yet, so I'll wait it out until tonight. (I wouldn't be sad to see him go, but that's such a bogus way to get rid of him.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

that outfit he's wearing in the link is why he REALLY should have been kicked off

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha they've listed him as "disqualified" on the website!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

If it were for his crimes against hair I would have been satisfied; as it is, it seems kind of unfair.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

not a thrilling (Disco) show tonight -
the solid 4 were: Trenyce, Kimberley L, Clay, Ruben

"Let's Groove", unfortunately Rickey's worst so far, showed that his sublime moments are hard won - that fickle voice works best for ballads.
Joshua was by far the worst - he should get the boot.
Kim C works the stage but is getting dull.
Carmen continues to surprise me by giving lively strong performances - not exactly vocally exciting though. she gets the most active camerawork of the lot.

maybe more solid this year than last, but less inspired at the moment. 2 weeks to the '6', which was my fave show (Big Band) of last season.

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I was surprised by how many people who picked songs that didn't suit their voices much. Given all the great disco songs out there, I thought the choices were weak. Are they only given a small number to work with due to copyright/permission problems? I wonder.

I did like Simon's "It's Raining Men" joke at Ryan's expense.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I did, too. Also, WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH DUDE FROM EARTH, WIND AND FIRE?????????????????

I felt so bad for Rickey! That really made me cringe, almost as mush as Josh made me cringe.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Um the dude from EWF looked like Eric Stoltz in MASK.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Verdine..rocks.

http://www.newsreview.com/issues/sacto/2001-09-27/music-1.jpg

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

He just looked like this weird amalgalm of Prince and Rick James if they aged pretty badly.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

In Rick James' case, at least, there is no need for the 'if'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, yeah.

I just hope Rickey doesn't get voted off, he was just having a really bad night. I wish it was Kimberly Caldwell -- not necessarily because she is the worst singer in the competition, just very stage-y and schtick-y and annoying.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet she puts out to Seabag. Or whatever his name is.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I still want Carmen gone, but unless America shocks me it isn't happening this week.

I'm guessing America will vote out either Rickey or Kimberley Locke, not because either deserves it but because they are the ones I see as least likely to appeal to a wide cross-section of America.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

So how long do you have to wait to find out? Do you have the performances on a Tuesday and the results on a Wednesday then? On the UK version we get both shows on a Saturday night - but I suppose that means less phone revenue innit

We get both American Idol shows on Friday nights - thank fuck for ITV2

I am also pissed off that Corey is no longer in the running - I wanted to see the look on his face when he got voted off

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The look on his face when he denied the charges against him was pretty priceless.

"Um, they accused me of beating up my fifteen-year-old sister, and then beating up four cops... and I want to tell you that these charges... are... not true?" *blinkblinkblink*

(Not that I buy him beating up four cops; I barely buy him being able to beat up his little sister.)

We get the performance on Tuesday and the results on Wednesday; I assume the delay is because the potential call volume is so much larger in the US.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fabulous - I have to see it. Cheers Dan

I hadn't heard about the four cops, just the stuff about his sister - and I'm still surprised it wasn't Kimberly C who wasn't disqualified for her past in, aherm, "amateur video"

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Good god, I too am finally under Ruben's spell. Even when he's flat it's like he MEANT to be flat and it sounds awesome. I want him to do a Christmas album!

Rickey's afro get-up was appalling. If he'd knocked it out of the park it would have been fine, but it ended up a distraction, like he was slightly out of his league, not knowing whereof he spoke.

I still like Carmen, she's the least-conniving of the bunch. And those HUGE EYES, she's like a Keane painting or something, wtf!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm bored with Randy's routine.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Who isn't?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know dog why don't you tell me dog?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

it's gettin cold in here, dog!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo dawg, you know, you did your thing, I wasn't really feelin' it tonight dawg, I think this wasn't the best song, dawg.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yo. haha daaaaaaaawg.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I Love Everything just got an injection of Randy-ism!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Give it up for my girl JEWEL!!!

(Jewel waves nervously at camera while attempting to hide her sans makeup face)

Yo, she's got an album comin' out! Give it up for her! That's my girl!

(Jewel, from behind her hand, to friend: "Who is he and why is he continuing to make the cameras focus on me? Does he hate me? Did I accidentally inflict my poetry on him?")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

and then Seacrust offered to Seabag her.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

He even called Kimberly C. "dawg".

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

and then seabagged her too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I have trouble imagining Seacrest seabagging anything besides a mirror.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

(The thin wail you hear is my imagination shrieking in abject horror.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

He seabagged his buddy DUNKELman right off the show dawg.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Why am I glad I don't know what seabagging is?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

You know what teabagging is, right? Well, the host for AI2 is named Ryan Seacrest.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha Ned. Dawg, i guess your not feelin it tonight.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(CONNECT THOSE DOTS, RAGGETT. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

simon needs to get his blowjobs BEFORE the show; he was cranky last night

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

dawg

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

*revisits thread hours later* Lord. For some reason now knowing just makes me want to punch the show's producers' faces in, but who knows.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

OUTRAGEOUS!

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

So nobody wants to talk about Lionel Richie? That's just tragic.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Again, the biggest, longest head I have ever seen.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I was disappointed that nobody sang "Penny Lover" or "Hello". "Endless Love" just isn't the same.

Carmen's version of "Call Me" was so bad as to be physically painful, as was Kimberly Caldwell's version of "Everything I Do" (though to be fair even a great singer couldn't do much with such a horrible song). I will be shocked if one of them does not get the boot tonight.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Everytime I turn it on I miss Ruben. What did he bust out last night. All I caught was the comments from Lionel and crew. If he doesn't win I'll be disappointed. Even if he doesn't win, he'll get signed. But I hope he doesn't go all cheesy style. I want to see him in video's with P. Diddy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

so Rickey's gone? that is SO WRONG!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 10 April 2003 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It was sick and wrong. What kind of twisted viewing public would believe that Carmen is a better singer than any of the folks in the bottom three? I may stop watching, because I have this irrational fear that she might win the whole thing.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It's going to come down to Joshua and Ruben, isn't it obvious??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The world is so fucked and Carmen is the cockroach on the ass of life.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The expressions on her face when she tried to sing "Call Me" were HILARIOUS. (The song's arrangement might have been the worst ever on American Idol, too.) She was trying to be dangerous but she didn't know how to make her face-muscles do it, so she just looked like she was squinting, or like something intermittently smelled bad.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

And every time she hit the chorus she just started bleating, it was like a goat in distress! It was funny, but so painfully bad.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

She's from Utah. It's not hard to break the law there - where is The Smoking Gun when we need them?

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister tells it like it is:

"I'm not surprised. Rickey has an awesome voice and I think he's good enough to make a career for himself, but his type of singing just doesn't appeal to younger audiences. He's too mature - very Brian McKnight-ish. If most of the people voting were adults in their late 30's and 40s, he'd probably still be there. Josh isn't pop either, but he's country - which is still very popular with younger people. I just can't understand how Carmen wasn't in the bottom 3 - and Kimberley Locke WAS???? I think all the rednecks are voting hundreds of times and trying to keep the white people in - which is why I won't be surprised if Ruben loses out to Clay (not that Clay's not excellent"

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay is terrible.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone notice he was wearing super-shiny lipgloss Tuesday night? The entire effect was so creepy -- more lacquered Disney attraction than romo.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone else think that the final four is going to have three guys in it? I can't believe that week after week, it's mainly the women who are getting the least amount of votes.
Does anyone else think that Clay Aiken looks like Raggety Andy? I can't believe that he has made it this far. He's a broadway singer at best. And I also think that the military guy is nothing more than a nu-country wannabe, and the way he cringes his face while singing is very off-putting.
I guess, like the judges, my bias is towards Ruben, but I'd also like to see Kimberly Locke and Trynece make it further than clay and josh.

Jonathan, Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

HOORAY - Kimberley C finally gone! with any luck Josh and Carmen will go next.
this week Kimberley Locke and Trenyce were as good or better than Ruben!
the bar is high now, though I wish Rickey coulda made it this far...

re: Jonathan simul-post. yeah I'm wit you
not to make too much of an issue about it, but the black vocalists do consistently outclass the white ones this AI season. as mentioned in other people's posts above, it's enough to make you wonder if the producers of the show are nervous about demographics, should the voting public ultimately go with the talent. surely that itself would indicate that viewers are more concerned with hearing great vocalists than any kind of racial balance, however based on experience I doubt it will happen - there'll still be those repeat dialing teenyboppers and students who vote based on 'cuteness'.
so, unfortunately - Kimberley Locke or Trenyce or both will probably get dropped out before other less-worthy types (Josh, Clay).

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

What was up with that broads head? the nu-mullet.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Totally. Maybe the judges doctored the votes when they saw her hair.

Jonathan, Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

She should have had it curled or something, so then she could look like a poodle.

Then randy could have said, what's up dawg? Yo, you look like a dog, dawg. A cute dog, but a dog, nonetheless, dawg.

Jonathan, Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah those judges need to change up their style, bring something new to the table each week

imagine an American Idol with celeb judges who also get voted on by the public, so 10 idol finalists and 10 judges all getting narrowed down to one.
I'm so there!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've missed this two weeks in a row due to work. :(

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a very bad feeling the three finalists will be Ruben, Clay and Josh. Clay is just so theatrical he makes me cringe, and Josh is just pretty meh but he has the "support our troops" contingent going gaga for him.

Based on this week, I think Kimberly Locke should be in the final three -- I think she was the only one to give a performance that I could call fantastic.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

With Carmen still in the running she's vulnerable to a "girl-next-door" vote split. I liked her too, she has a quietude the others lack.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

(I mean KL)

Simon has tiny little teeth.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

carmen is getting the a. skinny white naif vote and b. i'm humping clay vote (fo' real)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

final four: ruben, clay, josh, kimberly

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo Dawg!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yo, dawg...i wasn't sure about giving up my two daily posts for this thread, dawg...i mean, this thread is good, not ile's best thread, but it was tight, y'all are doing your thing dawg

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I know what yer sayin Dawg! I'm on the ninja tip dawg, all secret and stuff. Fo Shizzle.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

If Simon had come right out with it on tuesday and told Clay "look you're stealing all your facial expressions from Celine Dion - that's just WEIRD" he'd be gone already.

jones (actual), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see the beginning of Tuesday's episode. Can anyone explain the connection between Smokey Robinson and Billy Joel's music?

Jonathan, Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

There was none. It was pretty senseless, and I don't see the point of celebrity judges at any rate. All they do is sit there and say "You are so talented! Mwah!" no matter how asstastic the singer is because they don't want to look like a meanie.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thread gone dead? the show does seem less exciting now,
though I couldn't help jumping up cheering when Carmen & Josh made bottom 2 - finally the U.S. votes like it is!
rather another week of Carmen than Josh, but ya can't have everything...

Trenyce is getting a raw deal being compared to those others in bottom 3: she's leagues above 'em
and although Kim L's best performances have bettered Trenyce
my final ranking wish is:

Ruben > Trenyce > Kimberley Locke > Clay

Josh doesn't even belong in final five
to think we coulda had Rickey!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

IT IS OFFICIAL: I hate America.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

WTF was up with last night's show??? Seriously.

I am so appalled that Josh was not in the bottom two, let alone get eliminated like he so obviously deserves. Is it just backwards "morans" who wank to Lee Greenwood ballads that vote?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No shit. Ruben almost getting booted. "Hey everyone vote for the Marine" even though he hasn't served. I kind of want Ruben to get booted though, I mean do we really want him to go on all those cheesy cabaret style tours with the rest of the dorks? No way. I'd rather see him lose, get signed by Bad Boy or something and completely rock the fuckin show. Rather than singing Neil Sedaka tunes for a year. He totally needs to be in the next Jay Z video or something.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil Sedaka also needs to pen a song "Light In the Loafers".

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil Sedaka was hysterically bad, but what else could you expect from the only celebrity judge to have ever starred in an MST3K movie?

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, I might be confusing him with Paul Anka. They both make the most treacly songs.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it's not like the Tamyra debacle, where the one person with any talent at all was voted off. It's sad that Josh made it farther, but... oh well.

Now wait a second though. Sis it occur to anyone that Mr. Country Star might actually win this thing?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

sis=did

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Who got booted?

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Trenyce

But Ruben was in the bottom two along with her!

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Very wrong last night, but I'm hoping that Kimberley Locke will beat Clay's ass. My preferences, in ascending order, are : Josh=>Clay=>Ruben=>Kimberley. Clay seems to have a ridiculously huge fan club, unfortunately. I would put Josh before Clay - he's more genuine, but he's just so weak.

Chris has a point, though - it's probably to Ruben & Kimberley's advantage to not win, so that they don't have to sing whatever cruise ship theme is written for them.

I wonder how "morans" felt, though, when they got a look at Josh's family - they're not exactly a stereotypical country family.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

And I just want to say, as a curly-headed woman, that I want to beat up Simon for all his comments about Kimberley's hair. Grrrr!

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad someone see's what Im saying.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

And I just want to say, as a curly-headed woman, that I want to beat up Simon for all his comments about Kimberley's hair. Grrrr!

Yeah, the comments are completely moronic. I think her hair looked fantastic when she was first trying out (before she made it to the finals), it looks okay now but I think the original style suited her much better.

I do see what you're saying Chris, you are right but it just pisses me off completely to see people vote in such an idiotic way. In a way it would be nice if Lance Corporal Asshat wins, he could be stuck with the cheesy AI image.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Guarini Dawg was back on last night. His song I though was pretty good. Im sure it sounds better on disc. At least he didn't bust on any of thos e PYT moves.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Just seeing Simon say that stuff about her hair, with his face all scrunched up in disgust, gave me a bad flashback to high school, when Irish nuns would tell me that I had "bad" hair and that it was too "wild" (obv. they mean "too ethnic").

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

What Dan said.

I'm still FUMING.

(Sedaka was way more entertaining than Diane Warren.)

(Simon should've just told Kimberley, "I'm glad you look more white now.")

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I am so taping this tomorrow night.

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, I might be confusing him with Paul Anka.

Anka. Starred opposite Mel Torme and Mamie Van Doren in Girls Town (and though Torme was in the film -- hell, Dick Contino as well! -- Anka got all the songs, the bastard...though at least the Platters got to sing a number).

Reading everyone's comments about the show has been far more entertaining to me than the show itself could ever be, I'm sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Two days on and I still want to introduce Dr. Martens to the genitalia of America.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, you're so hard.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, Trenyce was bony and had weird eyes. She scared America. What do you want, to terrorize them even further?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I want America to stop voting off the people who can sing (Rickey, Vanessa, Trenyce) in favor of the people who can't (JOSH).

Trenyce wasn't going to win, but she deserved to beat out Josh. Also, it is CRIMINAL that Josh got more votes than Reuben.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 2 May 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i read that as "she deserved to beat josh" as in "to wallop him around the head and neck" and i agree

america blows. if ruben doesnt win, i'm boycotting next year

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 May 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

That too. Actually, that would be fantastic; imagine AI3 as a cage match where the winner gets a recording contract!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 3 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I the only person who thinks Kimberly Locke is overrated? I mean, she's got a good voice, but it seems too perfected. Listen to the sassy, growly part! Now here's the glass-shattering high note! She also seems like a perfectly nice gal, but not quite charismatic enough to win the hearts of millions.

Ruben is obv. great -- but I have a soft spot for Clay, who I thought was just fine on the Grease song, thank you very much. Plus, he's got that charming androgynous appeal. (Or maybe that's just me.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it might be a side effect of the painkiller I am on because of my knee, but I laughed until I cried at Josh's version of "Jive Talkin". His facial expressions are so weird, and the whole performance was laughably bad.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay has the same approach to every song, but so does Ruben

i have friends who actually boycotted the show the the moment they heard Frenchie went down

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

if anyone other than josh goes tonight (or clay hahaha yeah right i can dream) then i may be done with this

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

jess the thing is that ruben wins no matter who "wins", it's all academic at this point, just enjoy the ritual

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay was a total asshat during that "Grease" song. Way to shake your pelvis like an overanxious eight-year-old girl, dude.

Josh must GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO. A pox on his jive talking (no one that vanilla whitebread gets the "-in'" from me).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I am sooo embarassed that I live very near Josh Country that I can't even begin to describe it.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I bold enough to predict Clay goes tonight in a shockah? No. But I think it might happen.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

overanxious eight-year-old girl

See, that's what I meant by "androgynous appeal" !

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid it will be Kimberly. I think there are too many pre-teen girls that think of Clay as a kind of hearthrob.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The question is, would you have thought he was a heartthrob when you were pre-teen? And would your mother have let you use the phone?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Heartthrob = Josh (he looks just like a high school linebacker) and my MOM would be the one calling!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

what was josh doing running around?? the man can barely stay in tune standing stock-still, for god's sake. also was it just me, or was watching the judges try not to say "gay" while describing clay's Grease number the suspense highpoint of the series so far?

jones (actual), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

josh = daterape heartthrob (seriously, check the faces he pulls in closeup)

clay = bandgeek heartthrob

ruben = 40 yr old lady heartthrob

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

75% of America thinks Clay is gay, thus his support won't be as strong as Josh or Roooooooooob.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

yes but 83% think josh would pick a bar fight with them, given the chance, so ???

jones (actual), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's hear for the 17% who think Josh is played out!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm all hearthrobby over Clay and I'm 24. If I got my hands on him I'd squeeze the religion right out of that boy.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh shit!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Excuse me. What I meant to say was "I didn't see that coming."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet you always say that on a date.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

josh = daterape heartthrob (seriously, check the faces he pulls in closeup)

He always looks like he's angry at the microphone! His faces are scary.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 8 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

In a way I'm sad to see him go. The show is less diverse without him.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

If you need your weekly asshat allotment, you can always watch Bill Maher.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

No, we need to be rid of Josh. America must learn: that country shit don't fly. Ruben is the future.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It wasn't that he was country, it was that he was a terrible singer with scary stages moves.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank the Lord we will never be treated to the spectacle of Bill Maher attempting to sing "Celebration".

Granted Josh isn't who I would choose to represent "country" but look at the field now. It seems less substantial.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer, you are mental. I still luvs ya, tho.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

he was a terrible singer with scary stages moves

*insert 'But I thought you liked Justin' comment here*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait... are Brits watching this show too?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

They might be. I haven't seen any Brit posters on this thread recently, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it just me or did they record the staged video segments onto some VHS tape they found lying around labelled "stuff 98-99"?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin isn't a terrible singer; he's just not as strong as first impressions would lead you to believe. He doesn't seem to shine on a song unless he's lived with it for several years.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I must be slow. I thought you were in England, Ned. I can't imagine a more English name.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Clearly certain Anglophilic parts of myself linger on. ;-) Born near Seattle, live in Orange County.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I have finally figured out that the hair is a Vedder homage.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

justice has been served.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed was merely trying to cop my style. Regrettably, that also included taking my singing voice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Soooo, what did everyone think of last night's show?

Last night on aim someone pointed out to me that Clay would sound great if he were working with Vince Clarke, and that sounded to me like a brilliant idea. So now I don't hate him quite as much.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay would sound great if he were working with Vince Clarke

Dan to thread! Unless he was the one who suggested it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it wasn't Dan. I was wondering if he would try to kill me for writing that, though.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

See, that's the thing. I'm trying to figure it if he would think it is only appropriate or his vision of hell.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

yay for ruben and clay.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 15 May 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Clay really should have been voted off so that he could go be Fievel in the broadway version of An American Tale.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 15 May 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

If Clay wins I can't imagine how they're going to market him.

America, here is your new androgynous alien pop idol! (I guess they could remake The Man Who Fell to Earth).

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 15 May 2003 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

he lists James Taylor as one of his favorite artists: he is clearly testing us all

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 15 May 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Would I like Erasure/early Depeche Mode more if Clay was singing the songs? ...Nope.

I like Clay, though. I don't think he should beat Ruben (aka Mr. Infinitely-More-Marketable) but there's a very good chance he will.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Good though I hope Clay does win. Like I said above, I hate the fact that Ruben will have to go around singing cheesy craptacular songs. He needs to be down with P-Diddy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

One of Ruben's songs on Tuesday was TERRIBLE, at least by his standards (can't remember which one). I'm sick of Ruben's cute/sad puppy act. He's so enmeshed in pulling That Face of his that he doesn't even notice Clay trying to catch his eye and be buddies. I might be back to pulling for Clay, despite early lameness on "Unchained Melody" he sang the hell out of that song! Dog!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

hah I saw a rock show last night at Discotheque and hated the singing and thought to myself "American Idol has raised my standards"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

on "Unchained Melody" he sang the hell out of that song! Dog!

Justin Guarini was a fule to sing it the very next night -- it just highlighted how poorly he sings.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it did. Ha ha.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY Ruben!

to be fair, Clay's voice was stronger overall in the final couple of shows: much like how Kelly's voice got blown out towards the end of last season, Ruben's delivery probably peaked around the Neil Sedaka / Robin Gibb shows. and "Flying Without Wings" is no match for "Before Your Love". still, I was rooting for Ruben all the way: much prefer his style of singing than Clay's theatrical dramatics. on Clay's side: his transformation made for great TV...

my own Top 4 faves are Rickey, Ruben, Trenyce & Kimberley Locke.
and Rickey's performances of "It Might Be You" (soaring) and "I've Done Enough Dying Today" (effervescent) are personal highpoints of this season. but maybe 3 or 4 of Ruben's performances were just about as strong (though smoother, more seamless), including "Kiss And Say Goodbye", "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart".

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I am still in awe that Ruben made me enjoy a rendition of "Imagine". He deserved to win for that alone.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw the final last night. I'm disappointed to have missed this.

Ruben deserved to win.
Clay reminded me of Dana Carvey.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

not a bang but a whimper, eh

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Not a whimper but a shriek! (Or are you not referring to Clay's "tender" rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters"?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
i love josha gracin

danielle howe, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Odds are that the final four will be Kimberley L, Reuben, Clay and Josh. My gut says Reuben's gonna win.

WHY AM I NOT IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY?????????
