ILX Comp: Volume 2 (Do not hate us if you listen)

Message Bookmarked

There will be a 2nd comp this year, start recording songs. Deadline will be end of July probably.

As for the details, I'm not sure yet, I'd like to put it all together.

The duplication and the distribution are the major cost areas, so, anyone who wants to volunteer to take on this bit or organise a payment scheme should feel free to state their intention here or by email.

So do you want to contribute? What sorta direction should it take?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

SATANS MONKEY PENIS

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm working on noise stuff. Guitar / Bass / Computer w/ joystick + keyboard + primitive electronics / Drums

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to be on this one this time around. Not sure what piece yet.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a song for this.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

count me in

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Are covers allowed?

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I be on it? Pretty please? Do we have to make a track especially for the comp or can it be an olde one? How does it work?

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps we could have two - one covers album and one of originals? Someone want to volunteer for the covers album? Hello?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah. I'd love to put a song in.
So are these songs done completely solo or can they be songs you do in your band or what? (haven't heard the first one yet)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

age of track = doesn't really matter

being part of band = cool

length of track = not more than 8 minutes.

a covers album in addition to the 2nd comp would be cool.

(I'll be sending out quite a few copies of the 1st comp this coming week)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I bust out a freestyle rap over some dope beats to contribute? I'm being totally serious.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

the first comp was compiled on the principle of:

you send a track and it goes on.

so, yes Chris.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll contribute something!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in too.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

eh I'll do something

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

down with your "original/not-original" segregation RAAAR!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, I'm terrified of the copyright police :)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll coordinate collecting the mp3 submissions again, Jel!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 January 2003 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i am in. i need more deadlines.

kephm, Friday, 31 January 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I am SO in.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

How will you deal with it if too many contributions come in? The first 75 minutes' worth? Or preference to regulars? Or pick the ones you like best?

My vote, if it arises, is priority to regulars. It's a comp of ILX posters after all, so even if they barely make the deadline and aren't much good (hard as that is to imagine), I think songs from Ned, Mark S, Nick D, Tom E and the like should take precedence.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

PARTICULARLY a collaboration between Ned, Mark S, Nick D, Tom E and the like.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, if there are too many, I'm sure some of us from the last comp will happily pass on hogging more of another one.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

martin, last time it took 6-8 months to fill, but I think you have a point that this time it could be more popular. So, it'd probably work on a first come first serve basis, or making the deadline tighter.

Oh, and thanks Ned!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in. Assuming I can afford all the necessary equipment between now and July. (monitors, multitrack, new computer). Shouldn't be a problem! a huh huh huh.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

YES!!! At seven and a half minutes, Headcleaner just about makes it.

kate, Friday, 31 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh and thanks sean as well!)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

it must be called AN INFLUX OF ILXORS, and we should send copies to NME and UNCUT to review.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think songs from Ned

Meant in the kindest and friendliest way: you are completely and totally out of your mind. I can do a cover of "4' 33"" that's good, though. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

a) can you contribute something to the comp and the covers album both?
2) i will volunteer to distribute to new zealand!
c) yay!

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

How do we submit mp3s to you Ned?

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i hav several ones dat i cd 2 giv i wil giv 1 if it r accepted.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

How do we submit mp3s to you Ned?

Easy, just e-mail 'em. I have a highspeed connection so it's fine, but the best thing to do is send them over the weekend -- my home computer is almost always on then and will suck it up quickly so that way it doesn't linger in my account and cause potential problems.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 February 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got this song going around in my head....

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Saturday, 1 February 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i will definitely appear on this one

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 1 February 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

As for distrubtion, costs:

why not make a tree? A few people are roots who will copy to a few more branches, each of those branches make copies. etc.

this spreads the cost and labor out.

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 1 February 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i wanna do a colaboration. i dont think anyone who heard my song would be up for it, but fux0r it

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 2 February 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 2 February 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Count me in(again0 too, please!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Sunday, 2 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

(Still not sure what happened last time. The track must have got compressed at some point in the MP3-CD processed. Oh well.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 2 February 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm up for it

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll do it again (can't decide if I should pick another one of my Rebirth creations or submit Joei singing).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

People will hate me for suggesting this, but maybe if we make a more extreme time limit, ie under 3 minutes, then more people can get songs on there.

I would like to be on, but since I am not overrated or underrated, I pheer I will be knocked off by Millar crooning "My Heart Will Go On" into a genuine Edison-era phonograph.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

the 3 minute idea is alright by me

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It would make it pretty hard for me to participate. I think I've only ever done one thing under 3 min and it's from years ago.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Sundar GET TO IT!

"she's got a ticket to ri-iii..."

starry (Groke), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure about a 3 min time limit. I would probably leave it as it is, and hope that some people record short little songs to even things out! :) (I mean I will probably make a 2 minute song, coz I get bored when recording)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

(and like, if I haven't recorded at least 3 songs in an hour, I feel like I've been very unproductive, perhaps I should put more time into the process)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

you could make it a five disc set.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The ILX Box Set.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I should... write a new song for it.

(New Messages Alert gives me time to reflect. Maybe not.)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, I have an idea:

Songs have to have been recorded in 2003. Is that fair? (I mean it puts me out of the running at the mo)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatchyoo need? Songs under 8 minutes? Songs under 3 minutes? Songs recorded in '03? Old songs? Tweaky songs? Pretty songs? I got watchyoo need, mang!

Seriously folks, I would be honored if a nickalicious contribution was accepted. Hell, I'll even record a new song instead of sending one of my tired old ones that are stinking up my IUMA site!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

How it worked last time: If you get a song in by the deadline, it's on. And it worked out pretty well.

This time I reckon it'll be pretty similar.

There should be some agreement about song length and age of track though.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Songs should be new and ILX-themed, to be in keeping with the general ILX solipsism.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

ILX Comp 2: The Hall of Fame

1. Nickalicious - How Many Bras I Own
2. The Pinefox - Complete History of Cockfarming, Pts. 1-7
3. Chupa - Song to the Rainy
4. Sundar - Me vs. STEREO EFFECT GURLS
5. Fatnick - I R B3CKY LUC4S
6. Mike Hanle y - Ally Was a Tart
7. Jody and Geeta - We Love Vice Magazine
8. Momus - I Only Date Asian Women
9. Tracer Hand Soundsystem - Thread Connection
10. Promqueen - Woot Woot Business

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

This is actually a good idea - each song should be derived from the name of a thread. I'm making too many rules, but I require structure structure structure!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(Structure is now Express Men.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

(That's good, because I'm always craving men and I'm always in a hurry.)

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you on the wrong thread, Dan? Are you really talking about the chain clothing stores?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I really not read the end of Nick's post properly?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you did!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh in that case, my song will have to be "I'm going to Woolworth's now"

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i was going to call mine "unanswered questions"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I can cover "Miss America".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(Or maybe "Babe".)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll not just do a song called "How Many Bras I Own", I will do it with zero tongue-in-cheek-factor!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Every verse should be about different coloured bra.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude!

I really literally was just thinking about writing a different verse for each color of bra I have at home (I have 3...two that used to belong to my son's mama and the other to the girl what truly broke my heart) and sort of relating the color to the way coming across those bras when I'm cleaning makes me feel and having a refrain/chorus about how the bras store these memories of these women that had such an impact on my life, and how the presence of these bras in my home is like their continued presence in my mind/heart.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I think I'd actually like you to cover Miss America Sundar. Are Yoooooo Ready???!!!!!!

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
I want this to go ahead, I'll put it together, but I don't think I'll the time/resources to get the copies made or distributed them this time. So, any volunteers?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 2 March 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

how important is the feeling it should be on a CD and packaged as a product as opposed to just hosting all the tracks in one place online (which i would be willing to do)?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be cool as well, for letting more people hear it, but I feel that a CD is important as it is tangible.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 2 March 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Very true indeed. I'm still up for coordinating all mp3 submissions...*thinks*...I suppose I could handle direct submissions as well if they're on disc, but I couldn't work with cassettes, alas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

jel did you got my e-mail about some sort of collab? i didnt saw the post you made about it until last week and tried to send a e-mail but i dunno if it went cos my hotmail is fucked

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 2 March 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

a little announcement:

on March 05, 23:30 p.m. (CET), a bunch of ILXors' tracks will make their Estonian Radio-debut, on the nightly show called Fantaasia

(www.er.ee/eng/klassik -- can be listened live on-line; cue that really tiny "real" sign up there in the right-hand corner)

pinefox'll enter probbly 'bout 8-9 minutes into the show, and 1/2, Matt M & Wes C, dleone, Vietgrove later on;
more to come same time, same place next week, etc ;-)

many thanks to ev'ryone whose contributions are on "Do Not Listen"

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Count me in on this.

Also, we can host the submissions here on this server if need be.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Track hosting on line would be even better. Then you could burn them yourself.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in favour of online hosting, but not as the primary media for the comp.

CD copies are still very much urgent and key!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I was agreeing with the batch-of-CDs idea.

but if the tracks were hosted online,...as chris V. says, you could burn yourself a copy...and if there there was some nice cover, etc., artwork to download and print for yourself...it'd almost be as good as.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

and if anyone didn't have the ability to burn/whatever...I'm sure someone would volunteer to make a copy for them [e.g. I could make copies for allyC and madchen, etc.].

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, as long as people are willing to burn of CDs for people who have:

a) dial up modems
b) no CD burner

then I guess it'd be cool.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

(sorry cross posting!)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a dial-up just now and would still do it OK [I will have broadband in my new flat, hopefully]. but, yes. anyone not able to do their own can appeal for the nearest capable to help out and the nearest capable will help out.

: )

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

>>> on March 05, 23:30 p.m. (CET), a bunch of ILXors' tracks will make their Estonian Radio-debut, on the nightly show called Fantaasia

pinefox'll enter probbly 'bout 8-9 minutes into the show

----------

Surely the most surreal event of my entire "career".

milk it!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd be happy to burn and what not. I got a high speed connection and a high speed burner. No problem.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

2003 The Pinefox World Tour...he steps of the plane, and is confronted by 20 screaming girls all wearing "the pinefox estonia loves you" t-shirts!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

2003 The Pinefox World Tour...he steps of the plane, and is confronted by 20 screaming girls all wearing "the pinefox estonia loves you" t-shirts!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
new answers, this is going ahead.

and sorry if you haven't gotten the first one yet. It's coz I suck at getting things finished and have been floating in a sea of ennui for the past month. I will get them sent out in the next 10 days.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

what's the cutoff date for vol 2?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

my song is ready

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I think having it online is a fine idea - those with fast connections and burners can farm them out to those who want it. I'd be happy to burn and distribute a couple of dozen copies. If you put the sleeve up as artwork then everyone who want's it gets the physical disc and Jel doesn't get stung for the costs.
At the rate this is going I might just have that 500 disc burner by the time it gets done anyway, in which case I'll do the lot.
Jel - check yr mail!

Simeon (Simeon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I can't make the cutoff for this time around I'll just send everybody my next 'album', I thought I would have a new recording rig by now but OH WELL.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Millar, I don't think a cut off time has been set. You still have time!

you have to confirm?...ok...well...does it have to sound, y'know, like realmusic?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh hey. Hey I wouldn't mind being a part of this either.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 07:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Cover songs are not allowed correct?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not totally against cover versions, only from a legal point of view. But then we aren't making any money out of it, so I guess it's okay.

The way the comp works is this:

The deadline gets extended until we have enough tracks for a 70/80 min CDR. The first deadline will probably be sometime in June.

I'm starting the "Shadowy ILX Comp Committee" soon.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

oh oh count me in please....i've never actually posted on ilx, but loadsa times on ilm.

i'm all excited about hearing this music now....

Mr Monket (apn99), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I have something for this, but it's truly awful - I can't play, remember?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got something for this one, too. It's actually CLASSICAL MUSIC this time (and only an excerpt as the whole piece is 13 minutes long).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

yay, so Archer Prewitt songs are allowed.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got something for this one, too. It's actually CLASSICAL MUSIC this time (and only an excerpt as the whole piece is 13 minutes long).

Yay! I was considering making my submission a choral piece (haha, me doing all the parts).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I am confirming that I'm up on this biatch.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

The ILX Mixtape Masterpiece!

Whatchyoo need? I'm having trouble wrangling anything out of my new PC-based set-up right now (DIE LEARNING CURVE DIE!), but I've got a wide range of analog recordings to pick-and-choose from. There's this one grunge-hop-synthpop-reggae track itchin' to get heard...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

can i set up some sort of recording device to my home pc? I don't have a 4 - track or anything like that. i also want you to know that any piece I submit will have been played in the nude.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm so confused. Please clarify:
1. Who are we sending the songs to?
2. Can we send a hard copy (on cd) rather than mp3?
3. If so, where can we mail the cd to? You can email the address to me (my email address is backwords in case you can't figure it out: naamme @ yahoo.com).
Thanx. I have a song I will send.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything gets routed to Jel and myself and we listen and laugh and cruelly make fun of all the entries, then we erase them and replace them with our own compositions. (Note: not entirely true.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

They're actually replaced with loops off of the Litterbox site.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright, so I guess the answer to my second question is "no." So I can just email my song to you, Ned, with no advance warning or anything?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V - if your PC's halfway decent it shouldn't be too hard. Depends what you want to do. To avoid a steep learning curve I recommend either Cool Edit or Sonic Foundry's Vegas. Both cost a bit, mind.

Did someone say "Warez"? *cough* *splutter*

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Fret not, Nick, last time we did accept hard copies -- Jel handled those. Just sit tight and he'll come up with the plan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

just want to record me and a guitar. thats about it. yes, free stuff.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The plan is the same as last time:

Send Mp3's to good Ned (contact him first to let him know you have a song to send)

Send tapes and CD's to me via post, email me and i'll give you a postal address.

Maximum song length is around 7-8mins. First come, first served, any style you like, classical country super mario dance hall schmindie rock rap etc....

This time around the way it's going to be distributed will be different, but for now the (1st) deadline is:

SATURDAY JUNE 14th 2003

(I'm thinking a new thread may be necessary soon)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Send Mp3's to good Ned

As opposed to bad Ned, who will delete your files, break into your computer and ruin your hard drive. Fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i just made a track which sounds exactly like boards of canada. i'm not sure if this would be a copyright issue or not

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Good Ned" = sounds like he's a friar or a monk or something.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickalicious, my son: go in peace and sin some more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

http://members.aol.com/dubplatestyle/bocnme.mp3

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not bad j-dub

i give it a 7 on the roygbiv scale

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

so, "v" then

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

We should just turn this into a big GSYBE! collective jam. make one 80 minute masterpiece. and title it "motherfucker=ilxor"

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I've settled on my acoustic rendition of "Your Love" - Outfield.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned - is now a good time to email my song, or would you prefer I wait until this weekend?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna record "winter song" and a song with Chupa!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

and winter song will only be about 40 seconds long!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah...so, my song is ready. Who wants it? Ned? Jel? ANYONE? Oh my god, where did everyone go? It's so dark and the walls are closing in! What's that? Who's there? I know someone's there!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

How Eno is your song Nick? Maybe a second companion comp could be made by/for the Nicks-Becoming-Brian-Eno.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

This weekend, Nick -- anytime Saturday or Sunday. Thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

well if it's hosted on line we could have the bonus "nicks become eno" ep!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 27 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit, my song is not Eno at all. It's more Pere Ubu meets, uh, Kool & the Gang of Four? But I would totally be up for the Nicks Become Eno EP! Actually, my girlfriend and I recorded a cover of By This River, but I might want to do another one.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

yep! winter song is all of 20 seconds, hoorah!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

me too me too. my band shall contribute and destroy!!!! we are BARBAROSSA

gabriel (gabe), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Are any on the tracks from the first comp stored online anywhere? I'd be curious to hear it, but I don't wanna nag anyone for a CD this late on.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
jel i am sending the International Telepaths track to you this week. :-)

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 4 May 2003 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

we got our new recording studio (read: rehearsal room with 8-track in the corner) set up today. i'm going to record something special next weekend for this..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 4 May 2003 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

oh cool, thanks both of you!

I will treat this as a wake up call to get on with organising this. Expect a new thread soon.

I really think hosting it on-line and people burning and distributing is going to be how we'll do this.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 4 May 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
It's time for my once-every-few-months revival of one of the ilx comp volume 2 threads to ask what's going on with this dealie?

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, BACK TO TOP! Nick and I need to get famous off our hit single.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!

I just dubbed down a copy of a song I recorded ten years to cassette. If you accept tapes and need to fill space it's all yours.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years AGO, sheesh

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

is there still time to contribute smth?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say yes but Jel is the arbiter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there's plenty of time, this is on hold 'til the spring. So, please send songs, and thanks for being patient.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But I'm not patient!

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

You gotta try!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I will send song I swear it. I just first need to test group some of my shit and find out which track is the buzz clip.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

jel i still havent heard from that song i sent you

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

was it meant to call home?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i will have a contribution ready by february

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I always forget about this! If'n I don't have any of my new batch of songs ready in the next month or so, I'll just dig something out of the vaults. Is that okay?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

How does this work?

Recap briefly, please...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

or not...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a comp of songs done by ILXors in their bands or at home with a tape recorder. Jel is taking care of it (and Ned too I think?). They might be posted online this time instead of sending out cd copies to save time/money.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If it is going to be just online, is there any particular reason why songs couldn't just be added as they come in instead of waiting until everyone has contributed to launch?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Then where is the anticipation? (And yes, I am handling mp3 submissions.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
So this is still on? I figured out with the help of friend of mine how to record via pc. I got me a song.

Chris V (Chris V), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, to where do we send submissions?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

As before, I'll take mp3s. I've got a few sitting on a folder waiting for the release. Drop me a line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
you could have my cover of strawberry switchblade's 'since yesterday'!!!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I should record an exclusive and specific introduction track.

"Hi, I'm Ned. This is the second ILX comp."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Now EAT MY FUC." *gothy dance beat*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Happiness is had!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh hey people! Sorry about being lax with this, I'd like to do this still, BUT, I've come to realise I'm totally useless at sending out copies of the CD. And, I have no idea how'd we'd get the songs online, or if that'd be fair to people who don't have good internet connections and/or don't like downloading. So, I was thinking I could get the copies made like last time, but only around 40/50, and then they could be sent out to a few key people to distribute/burn new copies.

Deadline May 31st 2004.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I get free postage at work, so I'm happy to burn and mail, near and far.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Deadline May 31st 2004.

My birthday!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Luna! :)

EEK! Did I really start this thread in Jan 2003?

Yep, it's gonna all be birthday songs for adaml! I just decided!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This should really be the IL@ Comp.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

so, no more submissions?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, deadline's the end of May, ergo I think yer fine, Spencer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, cool, I've done a bunch of recording lately. Are you collecting the tracks then, Ned?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, I thought that was the deadline to request a copy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a bunch of songs with Sean a few years ago. Maybe I should submit one of them as they're really great with Sean singing falsetto!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i might submit to this.

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I will handle all mp3 submissions as before. Contact me privately about this first -- don't just simply mail me an mp3 before checking!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't stuff anything into his box without asking first.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*would talk but my mouth is full*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Vow, Luna!
I'll remember that.
(And've already stuff&things set aside to send in return to the good person who'll burn & post me the upcoming ILX Comp Vol.2, honest)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yay! a deadline i can actually meet!

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Then Jim goes into hibernation for four months. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I was thinking I could get the copies made like last time, but only around 40/50, and then they could be sent out to a few key people to distribute/burn new copies.

Promises, promises, Jel;> (As I was one of the poor souls that STILL hasn't got Comp #1 from you yet, despite bribery....)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, nichole, I sent you an email about it last week! Please email your address!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a bunch of songs with Sean a few years ago. Maybe I should submit one of them as they're really great with Sean singing falsetto!
If you can find "Death March of the Smurfs", go ahead and submit it. It was my crowning achievement.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel, do you accept cassettes?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe he's got a tape drive in his left armpit.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, it's true, you'll have to post it to me first though! Email me and I'll send you an address to send it to.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

After that, he will then indeed put it into the tape drive in his left armpit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It's almost like a Phillip K Dick story, maybe if I take the tape out reality will come to a shuddering halt.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like jel a la Teddy Ruxpin. When he plays a cassette, his mouth and eyes move, and little kids are fooled into believing that he's telling a story.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

can i just post my mp3 here?

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Shore.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned check yr email. And kill yr idols too. Always good.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Noted, noted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this still the same comp I sent you an MP3 for alreday Ned? I'm confused!

mei (mei), Saturday, 7 February 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm... how come I never noticed this. Can I do a track for you, Ned? Should be ready by the deadline...

Rob M (Rob M), Saturday, 7 February 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mei, yeah it's the same comp, things have been progressing a bit slowly, but ya know genius can't be rushed :)

Rob M, yes, send a track to Ned on MP3, or to me if it's on tape or CD. Thanks!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 February 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be on CD, I'll mail you for your address. Cheers. Might give me the incentive to actually complete a recording rather than fiddle for ages.

Rob M (Rob M), Saturday, 7 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this still the same comp I sent you an MP3 for alreday Ned? I'm confused!

Yes it is, thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah and I are currently trying to relearn the song we submitted for this ages ago so that we can play it at this open mic thing. The problem is that on the recording, it has 2 drum parts, bass, 2 guitar parts, and a keyboard part, and we're trying to play it with a drum machine, a bass, and a guitar.

NA (Nick A.), Saturday, 7 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I can host mp3s on my webspace if necessary.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 7 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I've got it -- Teeny does something like on the Queens of the Stone Age album and makes DJ announcements between the songs. (It's either that or bad hip-hop album skits and do you really want that?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

YES!

"Aw shit, man, they shot Hanley. Shit. Fuck. Aw, fuck, man, don't die on me, man..."

NA (Nick A.), Saturday, 7 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Or we could just recreate all the sketches from 3 Feet High and Rising.

NA (Nick A.), Saturday, 7 February 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! I do like that idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 February 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i sent ned an mp3 for this like ages ago!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm working on something. slowly.

cozen shields (Cozen), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

("If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing slowly")
(NOT a K.Shield's quote, btw)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 7 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i sent ned an mp3 for this like ages ago!

I've got it! I'm just patiently waiting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 February 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, nichole, I sent you an email about it last week! Please email your address!

Just did....hopefully UK post won't play "sticky fingers", along the way.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 7 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jel, sent it to the buglebear addy I've already got. If you don't get the email this time, I'd recommend commando measures against the ISP with a Molotov cocktail.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 7 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Bump.

mei (mei), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! I'll contribute something to this, this time.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

How many have there been?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I know! I can put contribute one of my sub-Leonard Cohen songs to the cause . .. it'll fill up space on the CD if nowt else.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll send a track - where to?

and how can I get a copy of volume one?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Direct uncompressed CDR files or the like -- send to Jel via physical mail

mp3s -- I handle those, contact me privately to make arrangements (please do NOT send me mp3s directly without checking with me first!).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Is this still happening? Can I send something? Deadline? Schedule?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still sitting on the mp3s! If you have that, send it along.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted to put something solo on here, but that's not going to happen any time soon. I'll maybe send a Canasta song, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a track on a CD, not an MP3. Should I send it to Jel?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 19 April 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll probably send something. i have some tunes of mine converted to mp3.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 April 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hokay, shall sort out one this week or so...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 April 2004 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, you can post it to me, did I say when the deadline is? I think it's the end of may.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

should send my mp3's to you or ned?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

To me, please. I did get your e-mail, latebloomer, I just hadn't had the chance to respond! Please don't send anything until evening Pacific Time, though, large attachments clog up my mailbox and I can't do any automatic downloading of anything until I'm home from work each day. Thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

No problem!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What's actually happening with this? I probably have something to contribute.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel is the prime mover and shaker as always.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't sell yourself short, Ned!

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Jel - I have a CD for you, but I hav mislaid yr address. I have e-mailed you. Will get it in the post as soon as I know where to send it! Ta!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen years pass...
