anthony, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Basic tags:

Paragraph break: <P>
Line break: <BR>
Bold text: <B>text</B>
Italics text: <I>text</I>
Website link (aka anchor tag): <A href="http://websiteURL">text that should be clicked on</A>
Email link: <A href="mailto:emailaddress">text that should be clicked on</A>

More detailed info can be found here.

I wonder if I can cheat and post in pretty COLOURS?

Hmmmm... how well have I remembered basic HTML, or will I look like a raving fool?

masonic boom, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's not that hard, even I mastered the (very) basics in a week. Believe me, that's something, computer coding (in all its forms) is something I'm not compatible with.

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

for people that don't know any of that stuff , try this - when you see stuff that makes you go , Oh how do you do that?, you click on VIEW & then down to SOURCE. then you can see the java or html stuff laid out there & you don't even have to understand how it works, if you wanna steal stuff just cut/paste/replace text.
i only found that out recently , i hope it's useful to the few people who know even less than i do.

Bye.

Simple example of an HTML document.

A simple example.

This is a simple HTML document. This is the first paragraph.

This is the second paragraph. This is a word in italics. This is a word in bold. Here is an inlined GIF image: myimage.gif.

This is the third paragraph. Here is a hypertext link from the word foo to a document called "subdir/myfile.html".

A second-level header.

Here is a section of text that should show up in a fixed-width font (as if it were a computer listing or a verse of poetry):

        The cat in the hat
fell to the ground and went splat.

This is a bulleted list with two items:

  • First item goes here.
  • Second item goes here.
This is the end of my example document.

three questions for those in the know:
1: does "font size" work like"point size" ie is size 4 smaller than size 10? is there a default size (presumably yes, in which, what is it?)
2: explain "cellspace"
3: explain "cellpadding"

(extra points for lucid brevity and fine penmanship)

mark s, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

cell space and cell padding are to do with tables...cell padding affects how indented the table will be...er...I guess I can do tables when I have Dreamweaver or other web editor open. 0.1 of a point?

don't think you can link directly to yahoo images, nick. it says that in the how to be a hippy guide to what's going on (uk collectors edition), i thought...

gareth, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Weird - that's what I was testing. I knew geocities/web page ones taken over by Yahoo couldn't but I wasn't sure if that applied to photo album ones too. You're right that the one above doesn't work when I delete my cookies. BUT, the one of the Cameroon footballer does, even though its now in a folder that had exactly the same 'share with everyone' status. HANG ON A MINUTE! Now that one doesn't work either, despite the fact that Chris said it now was (following my changing the album setting from 'private' to 'share with everyone'). And it was working for me a minute ago, and post cookie-deletion. IT'S MESSING WITH MY MIND!

N., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK, sorted, I think. Everyone can see those last two, yes?

N., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I clicked on the properties then cut and pasted inrto my browser, which let me see it, after that it appeared on the nations cup page itself. How odd.

chris, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

nope

chris, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But that's just MAD!! I have logged out of yahoo and deleted all my cookies yet the above two pics work for me. How can this be?

N., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who can explain Chris's and my experiences. And is that last sentence grammatical, and if not how do I make it so? Surely I don't have to say "The experiences of Chris and me?"

N., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There's a web cache on your network?

RickyT, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Chris and I Nick, and I

Ronan, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

sounds like a local cache. no one else has rights to that image, but you still have it on your hd, so it isn't fetched afresh from site.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah, OK. But how does that explain what happened to Chris where it let him view it as an embedded image if he'd pasted in the address previously?

Ronan, "the experiences of I"? Surely not?

N., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

it's grammatical

mark s, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

this isn’t business, this time it’s grammatical

gareth, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I trust mark s. But it does sound weird, yes?

N., Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The address has a question mark in it, suggesting that yahoo does a server-side query for it. Perhaps they don't work as links because of this (I don't know why), but once you've pasted them into the browser they're cached locally and then work afterwards?

Sam, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Surely this is all part of the conspiracy against N.

I REALLY want little anchor tags for each post. So the first post gets <a name="1"> the second post gets <a name="2"> etc. so that it's possible to link to specific posts instead of just the whole thread. The way it is now it's like a hyooge collection of 70 minute mix CDs with only one track on each one. Also, it would allow jel to actually link to the top :)

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yup. Try:

a:visited {text-decoration: line-through}

I'd just stick with colour changes though. Does it really matter if links have already been clicked on?

RickyT, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've changed the colour AND the strikethrough. Go and have a look! The AB has been haxx0red but... in a very CRAP WAY. In other words some DIFFERENT COLOURS and boring stuff. God I'm dull.

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like the strikethrough idea ("been there, done that") - ha ha I must NEVER visit Freaky Trigger ever again!

Jeff W, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ahh ok, stylesheets, i thought it was just for ILx, and stylesheets seemed a bit extravagant. if you're using stylesheets, save them as a separate CSS file (rather than as STYLE tags in the page), and include it's URL in the HEAD object, then you can change the look of the whole site at once, without having to change each page individually.

sam - only glanced at the source, but is probably not working because of line breaks - Javascript treats end of line characters as the end of the statement, whether or not it has reached the semi-colon. it would probably work with more careful cutting and pasting

i'll find or write you one if you're still looking. a lot of the sample cgi scripts around have gaping security holes.

you can always use: <FORM METHOD="post" ACTION="mailto:email@address.here">

which most browsers support instead of a CGI script

I think he's got it.

Graham (graham), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

um, too must nesting star, you don't need half of those tables.

if you have a table containing only one tr containing only one td then it doesn't need to be a table.

if you have a table containing lots of trs each containing just one td then scrap that too and just separate the rows using p tags.

Let's say you want to post a photo, but you are unsure how large it will end up on the screen. What can you do to minimize the size?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

<img height=#ofpixels width=#ofpixels src="http://shania.com/lovemeformymusic.jpg">

where #ofpixels = the dimensions of the image you'd like to resize. maintain a constant ratio in order to reduce distortion.

gygax!, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

you can hand code the img tag and supply width=n and height=m attributes along with the src thing. make sure the width and height values are in the same ratio as the original image or it'll look stretched.

but this is bad practice - it means the entire image has to be downloaded (lots of data possibly) before the broswer resizes it (and browser image resizing isn't always that good, qualitywise). resizing it yourself and linking to new image is better.

(curse you gygax! 8)

sarah,

the pixels are 600 x 450 so you can resize it to 400 x 300 or 200 x 150:

<img height=400 width=300 src=http://feistycat.subtlehints.net/furball/lucycat4_big.jpg>

<img height=200 width=150 src=http://feistycat.subtlehints.net/furball/lucycat4_big.jpg>

I have been thinking about this text as the place where Tom Ewing made the baffling assertion, on which I have often commented, that everyone agreed that B&S were ('ferociously'?) inconsistent.

I don't think my computer has got the hang of it either.

dear other front-end developer I work with:

for the love of god think when you start to code some shit. if it looks like a big old chunk of content might be something they want to dynamically display or hide, then keep it all in one table or something, do not break the "order" button from an item away from the item and mix it up in a table with a totally different item. This is dumb and shows no ability to think through problems. Also it makes me want to kick you.
