I was going to post this in the Transfer News and Speculation thread, but I reckon it probably deserves a thread of its own.

Now, I hate Chelsea, as much if not more than I hate Arsenal. Hating Chelsea is just what I do, despite me liking and admiring a handful of their players. So the fact that a genuinely exciting and amazing Champions League contending Chelsea team is now a real possibility annoys me somewhat. Mostly because I think "he could have bought Spurs!" but also because I can see them playing mouthwatering Real Madrid-esque football just a couple of seasons down the line.

So, post-Abramovich Chelsea - death of football or the dawn of a great new era? And what will happen to the Chelsea old guard, with Gudjohnsen, Hasselbaink, Stanic, Lampard, Le Saux, Gronkjaer and a boatload of others all likely to look surplus to requirements in the near future?

Mixed feelings - I have supported CFC for over 30 yrs, most of which have been fairly dismal times, so I suppose I should be excited about the future. Really though I'm very suspicious of Abramovich and worried about the consequences of him leaving just as quickly as he came, leaving us saddled with a huge wage bill and no money. I hope Ranieri can survive this, but I suspect that he'll go before long. Also - nothing much has happened yet - we've only signed Geremi and Johnson, neither of whom will transform the team. I hope to god we don't sign Veron. Of all the players you mentioned, Matt, Lampard may be the only one with a future at Chelsea beyond the next 6 months.

I assume you mean Vieri, Ronaldinho etc ... Abramovich has largely been bidding for the best players in the world (well those not covetted by Real Madrid) and naturally these players want to play for the top teams. Chelsea do not have the perception of being one of these elite clubs (yet). A good showing in this seasons Champions League will change this. They will come - only later rather than sooner.

The interest shown in young British talent (Johnson, Duff, Bridge)is heartening - so hopefully the likes of Lampard and Carlton Cole will not be frozen out.

oh, and I hate Spurs, as much if not more than I hate Arsenal :)

I think Chelsea seem fairly sensible at the moment. All the talk of Gerrard for £50 million or Vieri for whatever amount strike me as made up. Look at who they have signed, a right back from a team with one of the worst defences last season (admittedly he has some promise) and a water carrying type midfield player who looks, you know, ok. I'd be very surprised if they sign anyone staggering this season, I don't think it is Ranieri's way and I suspect he's fairly contented with his squad anyway. If he loses his job though things could get silly.

Geremi is MUCH better than that, and Johnson was the best player in West Ham's defence last year, which is admittedly about like being the best igloo maker in Mali. I don't know who else they will sign, but some of the signings sound decent business, even though some sound ludicrous and very improbable.

I'd be so happy if some rich person bought Bristol Rovers. Doesn't have to be billionaire rich - someone who gives us security and gets us so we aren't having to sell every decent player we find/develop would be fine.

why? i should imagine he's quite chuffed at being in the Champions League QF (not to mention sitting 2nd in the prem), his personal conribution to the team has been acclaimed by pretty much everyone. when he's fit he plays. don't see the problem really. if you are thinking about the arrival of Robben - there is no reason why they can't play in the same side. Both are as effective through the middle as on the left (very much in the giggs mould)

And they're all crap apart from Carlo - Ambrosio has played once and was embarrassing, Sullivan has moved with the agility of an out-of-condition tree sloth recently, Macho should never have been signed (Sunderland's 3rd choice last season!) and who knows about the Dutchman?

Next year we need 3 : Carlo, Cech and Pidgeley. Actually Lenny will be good in a year or two, but is prob. not ready for the premiership yet.

I've been eagerly anticipating that crack for over a year now, and still it eludes me. I'd like to think that Manyoo will be the first team to beat Arsenal but something tells me it will be someone like Fulham pulling off a shock result.

I did enjoy Mourinho's dressing down of Joe Cole yesterday. Especially the bit about him having a beautiful face and an ugly one.

For a team with 75 midfielders, Chelsea are looking amusingly short of strikers at this point, with only Gudjohnsen fit now. They'll have to recall Crespo and Carlton Cole at this rate.

I was there yesterday and Liverpool were poor - they had a huge Gerrard-shaped hole at the centre of midfield. Chelsea need a striker though, but looked comfortable as hell at the back - most noticeable thing is the huge gap in GD between Arse and the rest after so few games. Astonishing.

Let's hear it for City, please. The bloke next to me in the pub said after 20 minutes that City'd be lucky to get a draw. By midway through the 2nd half we had got back into the game and were really taking the game to Chelsea, after a lousy middle period of the match. Far better that way than sitting back and awaiting the onslaught. I like to think that Chelsea were off-colour because City played well - not brilliantly, but Keegan seems to have sorted out the defence, which, as Mourinho knows, is the starting point for building a decent team. Very chuffed.

Matt, thing you have to remember is that money is simply not an issue when talking about all things chelsea (at least until Roman gets bored/shot/jailed). we would have given Mutu away in january anyway (see crespo, veron).

Of course he wouldn't, but that's exactly why Mourinho ordered the test. Mutu is a talented player but his social life has gone completely haywire, causing his game to go completely off the boil. So Mourinho acted, harshly but i doubt without warning.

I was very moved just now by Claude Makelele getting a (very poor) last minute winner for Chelsea today - the sheer happiness on the faces of all the team, plus those on the bench, as they congratulated him at great length was very touching. I think this affected me partly just on an empathic basis, but also because I admire Makalele hugely, and he's the sort of player who is persistently underappreciated - but you see so clearly here that his teammates know how important he has been to their magnificent season.

which is why I expect big spending on some great striker this summer, someone that you know will get 25 goals next season. Probably a full-back too. If they're set on their sort of 4-3-2-1 formation, Makalele and Lampard are hard to beat, but one more great midfielder there (Gerrard would fit well, I think) would help.

Read an interview with Fernando Hierro a few days ago in which he said that every single Real Madrid player of a few seasons ago recognised that Makalele was the best player in the team, and the only one they couldn't do without. makelele is tremendous, but is he actually underappreciated? i've heard him called an "unsung hero" so frequently in recent weeks that he must be approaching "sung" status.

i was delighted to see him score though. i think his best asset is his positional sense - he always seems to be sitting in the perfect spot in front of the defence to make an interception or close down an oncoming attack. it can be awe-inspiring to see that sort of footballing intelligence at work, though i guess it's not as aesthetically pleasing as other football skills.

He's also the best I think I've seen at being available when a teammate needs someone to pass to. I know there have been a good number of people saying it lately, but he wasn't in contention for player of the year awards, he's not getting in anyone's team of the year on that nearby thread - I think nearly everyone still undervalues players of his kind.

13/11/04 - without checking, would that be the same weekend as B'ham 0-1 Everton (Gravesen pen) and L'pool 3-2 C Palace (two Baros pens)? Have a memory of listening to Fulham-Chelsea on the radio, driving back from Sefton Park.

I recall Chelsea beating someone 5-1 away that season (Bolton?) from 1-0 down at half-time; Mourinho just shifted things around.
