And darn it, as RJG said over on the other thread where this was announced, this deserves its own thread! Hurrah for Alex and his wife! May the child HONOUR FIRE.

ned telling a child to honour fire could be construed as criminally negligent, i think.

Maybe Alex should hold some sort of contest or bidding war for ILXors ... and then winner gets to name the child. I'm sure this group could come-up with something appropriate and creative.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:11 (twenty years ago) link

Ultimately, though, I wish you all the very best. Kids are so much fun.

Holy sheep dip! A thread hath sprung overnight!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It's still very early, so I probably should've remained a bit more quiet about it, but somehow the news escaped the vast portal that is my mouth.

Like I said, we're still only in the early stages, but I'm slowly becoming able to lower my eyebrows from atop my scalp and back down to their normal position of befuddlement, and my eyeballs have temporarily ceased their urgent desire to jump out of my skull. Thanks for all of your kind words.

The littlest fire-honorer isn't due until late April. Details as they develop.

Thank you again. =)

five months pass...
Very scary news today, and I'm rather upset and don't really know what else to do. We're into our 8th month of pregnancy now (the baby is due around mid-April). In the last couple of days, she'd been complaining about rather irritating itching all over. We'd heard that it was a fairly common occurence for pregnant women to experience itching, along with all the other hormonal anomalies....and that it was fairly routine. Trouble is, this was itching all over, not just around the stomach. So, after some prodding (largely by my mother), we went back to the doctor, who promptly took a blood test (this was yesterday). The fear was that it would be a condition called cholestasis, which is a disorder in which the liver can't seem to meet the number of demands its being hormonally subjected to (or something). In any event, it turns out that one of my wife's sisters had this same problem, and that it could conceivably be a genetic thing.

As it turns out, we got a call back today, and early signs signify that is probably is cholestasis. The upshot is that it can seriously endanger the life of the baby. We're going in to see the doctor again tomorrow morning so they can more thoroughly scope out the situation, but suffice it to say, this is not good news and my wife is barely consolable.

Anyone out there have any experience with this disorder? The sister of my wife that had it pulled through fine, and they now have a beautiful baby girl approaching her first birthday, so I have high hopes that everything's going to be alright, but it's just not something we were counting on.

Any info would be appreciated.

I know nothing about it, but obviously hope it all turns out okay.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, I am not familiar with this disorder at all but the doctors can keep a close eye on anything and confirm that everything is still going as planned. It is so late in the pregnancy that I do not think you should be so worried. If the doctors start feeling fears about it, they can and will order an emergency c-section and while that won't exactly be fun for your wife it is a very common procedure that has been very well mastered in this day and age and both your wife and your baby will be okay. You just have to get everything tested out properly now at the doctors' and they will have to monitor the baby even closer than before but, trust me, within the next month you will have a perfectly fine baby, much like your sister-in-law did.

*hugs*

Allyzay, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago) link

I know nothing about it either, but I hope things turn out well. That your wife's sister had this condition as well and everything turned out okay in the end is a good sign.

This sounds terrifying... hope everything's okay Alex.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:27 (twenty years ago) link

But it seems uncommon, Alex--mainly in women who were undiagnosed and the pregnancies were allowed to go on unaltered/treated to the full 40 weeks.

Most of these websites mention that the highest groups to have incidences of this are Swedes, Chileans, and women of all nationalities who are pregnant with twins, so I've emailed my mom. She had to have c-sections with all pregnancies and I really do not know why so I'm going to find out what she knows about various disorders.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago) link

(hugs) Alex, that's rough:< I'd say to have a serious talk with the wife's sis ASAP; you have a wealth of possible remedies at your fingertips/doorstep.

Try to stay calm until you know more. It always seems the worst when you don't know anything... Easy to give advice from 1000 miles away, I know.. but don't get worked up about it ...

We're all thinking about you, though.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:53 (twenty years ago) link

Plus, keep in mind that a lot of the medical information you come across describes the worst case scenarios...

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

[Got the list from WebMD: www.webmd.com. Has a wealth of info on the condition, though:

1) You have to do a free registration first;
2) Some of the articles need a medical dictionary to be understood (though they swear they don't!)]

However, all the messages I've read on Web MD's message boards on it say to hie thee to the doc ASAP (which you've already wisely done). Also that it IS poss to pull through fine, though inducing the pregnancy is also an option. The fact I was able to find relative info here means that tis more likely you'll get honest answers.

I won't say that to you, luna.

I know no one want's bad news. I haven't had a good day today, and I'm sorry. I guess I was just passing my bad energy to Alex, in a way you could say, just like I have to just about everyone else today.

I got so pissed off at a girl that just asked to borrow my eraser! Please forgive.

I really hope the best for Alex's baby, really!

I don't really know what to do. This is big news and I wasn't really sure of how to handle it "appropriatly." I'm just wanting something good to happen to me today.

How selfish!!! I'm ashamed of myself. Hope you all have better luck than me.

aja do you visit people in the hospital and say "hey I hear you'll probably die. boy, i heard about this other guy who had your condition and the doctors fucked him up so bad he can't even talk now"?

No, not at all. I can't even talk to the person I'm visiting. I feel so bad because of how sickly they look and I can only try to imagine the pain they are going through.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:19 (twenty years ago) link

Alex,

Although I don't have experience of this particular condition, I suffered severe pre-eclampsia in my second pregnancy. This is something which can cause the mother's liver and kidney to stop functioning and is altogether A Very Bad Thing.

Your wife is in her eighth month now, so if the doctors think there is any danger to either her or your baby then they will probably get her into hospital and induce her labour early. At 8 months, your baby is fully formed and has all its vital bits - it just spends the last few weeks getting a bit bigger.

The hospital will probably suggest that your wife has an ultrasound scan so they can measure the size of your baby, and wire her up to a monitor which records the baby's heartbeat. From that they'll be able to decide whether the baby is in any distress or not, and whether s/he would be better off staying put or the birth being induced.

Early babies sometimes get a bit jaundiced and hospitals will treat this with photo-therapy (letting your baby bask under a sun lamp for a few minutes a day).

My daughter was born at 34 weeks and everything was fine. I'm sure it will be for you, your wife and your baby too, and I wish you all the best :)

wow. For a start, I'd truly like to express how touched I am by everyone's posting. I know I can be a flagrant spewer of venom from time to time, but I'm certainly not made of steel these days, and everyone's words of hope and encouragement have meant a lot. I really wouldn't with this variety of stress on anyone.

As a quick update, we went back to the hospital today for more tests. While the blood tests still reflect the problem, a fetal monitoring showed that everything is fine at the moment.....but they now want us to come back to the hospital once a week to check the progress. I believe that in the majority of instances of this disorder, the worst case scenario happened when the problem went unchecked. We're hoping that since they've pinpointed it (we think), they can take whatever necessary precautions to make sure the worst doesn't occur.

Anyway, that's really all we know right now. Thanks once again for your best wishes and all your positive thoughts.

Smash, Friday, 5 March 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago) link

two weeks pass...
While I'm becoming a bit concerned that I'm airing too many of my problems on ILX these, since so many people had extended their thoughts and expressions of support/sympathy, I figure an update is in order.

We're still hanging in there. We're at the hospital now twice a week for fetal monitorings and injections of vitamin K (which, I believe, bolsters the liver). Unfortunately, the itchyness has seemingly gotten worse, and none of their proposed remedies seem to be having any effect. My wife is finding it nearly impossible to sleep, which causes her extra anxiety and she is now going to stop working (a few weeks earlier than initially expected/planned). At the recent doctor visit, we were informed that they want to induce the delivery ealier (we were initially due on the 19th, now they want to pre-empt any possible cholestasis-related difficulties by inducing labor on April 5th or 6th.) The most recent blood test show no signs of improvement, unfortunately. Signs are also showing (without getting too graphic here) that the way is already being paved for delivery (i.e. we were informed that due to certain conditions, my wife's body is alredy preparing....which could mean weeks or days...information we don't really know what to do with). We're hoping we make it to the proposed date of induction (about seventeen days away), as we want our little one to make it to the 38th week. Meanwhile, the weight and heartrate and movement of the baby are all fine so far.

Anyway, thanks for reading/listening and all your kind thoughts and words. At this point, I cannot begin to speculate the relief my wife and I will feel upon delivery of this little one.

Jaz himself suggested Jazmyn, by the way. The wife won't have it, unfortunately, but I thought that was mighty cool. (She nixed Geordie too).

Incidentally, we're still in a holding pattern of pre-pre-term labor....or so we think (the contractions have seemingly receded.)

It is with *GREAT* Pleasure, Pride and Exhaustion that I proclaim to you that.....

At 7:45 pm on MONDAY, MARCH 22nd, one little CHARLOTTE MARY SMITH IN NYC popped her tiny little head into the world. Weighing in at six pounds and some-odd ounces, little Charlotte gave her long-stressed and sleepless-from-cholestasis mother a good fake-out with some braxton hicks contractions (i.e. false alarm) on Friday night. We were all prepared to sprint off to the hospital then and there, but the contractions never revealed themselves at regular intervals and eventually dissipated. So, when we went in this morning (Monday), they ran a bunch to tests, looked up and said: "How about today, then?"

And so it was.

Mother, child and dazed-but-elated father are all doing fine. They just kicked me out of the hospital so that all and sundry may sleep.

It is with indescribable joy and relief that I report that little Charlotte, though having only spent 36 weeks to the day in the womb, came out as perfect and as unspeakably adorable as can be.

Anyway, there you have it.....

Okay, let's see if this works....

Here are the first official shots of little Charlotte M. Smith in NYC..... clearly displeased with her father's ham-fisted penchant for impromptu and unsolicited digital photography. More to come, of course....but here ya go for now.

At 3 days old...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

Oh so cute!

The Killing Joke shirt and all!

So, what was the first Killing Joke song Charlotte heard? Was it "Eighties"? Must have been, knowing her dad.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

No, not "Eighties". It was "Sanity," actually....but that's purely because it was playing on VH1 Classic last night during a feeding.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

What?

It was on VH1!

She's a lucky little one.

I still have yet to see ONE Killing Joke video!!

I had a basketball game last night. Tiring. But worth it! Finally we won! I was a huge part of it too. I had to tell the other girl to just waste time in the last 49 seconds. If I didn't, we would have lost the ball for sure!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, just out of couriousity (sp?), how did she react to the video? Did she cry of give undivided attention?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

or give

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 March 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, well she'll know Killing Joke before you know it. Her third word might be Jaz or Joke, you know. Right after she learns momma and dadda.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago) link

Next time she sees a picture of Killing Joke, she'll point and say "Joke" in the cutest voice!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago) link

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 April 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, i'd proposed on Halloween of 2000. This was a month or so afterwards (prior to 2001, but I always make that mistake, as we used the above photo for an engagement party invitaion in 2001.)

I proposed in my living room.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 April 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago) link

No, no... you misunderstand. Babies need clean living rooms. It's the "Punk" t-shirt that's got to go.

She is marvellous. Does she sleep well?

Nellie (nellskies), Sunday, 25 April 2004 06:56 (twenty years ago) link

Clean apartments are what happens when you get married. Were I still a single, beer-swigging rock pig, my apartment would accordingly fit the billl (as it once did), but now that I'm married, the wife runs a reasonably tight ship.

As far as the "Punk" t-shirt goes, if any of you little Beyonce-worshipping Good Charlotte fans did your homework and knew your history, you'd realize said shirt was not in fact a pathetic assertion of punkitood ala Smash the SuicIdol, but rather an advertisment for Legs McNeil & John Holstrom's once-hallowed magazine which coined the term (if you don't recognize Holstrom's legendary font, you shouldn't be allowed to own any Ramones albums). Yes it's a bit old and form fitting, but whatcha want?

Yes, while tiny and adorable, she doesn't really enjoy sleeping...or at least not when we'd like her to. Basically, she's a little vampire....up all night, sleeps all day.

You sleeping at all yet?

My little one is just getting a night pattern down.

hector (hector), Saturday, 1 May 2004 02:57 (twenty years ago) link

Nah, the sleeping situation is still a bit of a problem. The problem really is the inconsistency of it. There is no pattern basically. She'll sleep in nice, big three hour chunks on night, and we get lulled into a false sense of security that she's adapting to the day/night routine....only to be rudely roused the next night by her absolutely demonic refusal to be still/quiet/calm etc. It's getting better, I suppose, but oh so very slowly. More frustratingly, she'll sleep incredibly soundly during the middle of the day (seriously, you could blow an air-horn next to her little basket and she won't so much as flinch). We'll get there, but there are -- literally -- miles to go before we sleep. But sometimes, she's a little quiet angel like this.... http://homepage.mac.com/alexinnyc/.Pictures/Photo%20Album%20Pictures/2004-04-30%2011.46.22%20-0700/Image-465161B09AD611D8.jpgĂş

Sometimes, and I hate to say this to sleep deprived parents, but sometimes you have to do what you can to keep them awake to try and get their little schedules changed. I had to do it with Spencer, and it was horrible and we were both tired and cranky, but it eventually evened out.

BABIES LOVE KILLING JOKE COLOURS BEST!!!

Although babies are able to differentiate between colors at birth, they prefer focusing their attention on contours, fixing their eyes on places where color contrasts are greatest. Toys in black, white and red will satisfy your baby`s preference since they provide numerous images with high contrasts.

Yes.

That's most unfortunate.

Haha! Raising her to read from an early age, I see. ;-)

Actually, Alex, you will appreciate this -- yesterday after leaving Amoeba, friend Stripey and I passed by two Chicano skaters who couldn't have been older than eighteen or nineteen, and one was wearing a brand-spanking new Killing Joke first album graphic T-shirt. Fire was thus honoured.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, who is that holding her in the red shirt?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 16 May 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago) link

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 16 May 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

Judging by the decor, probably 1948.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:49 (twenty years ago) link

I guess I'd kind of like to have a baby, but it would have to like sleeping on our air mattress.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:50 (twenty years ago) link

Though I guess it could have the sofa, as long as it didn't sweat too much. Our sofa is faux-leather.

I love this thread. Love it.

My big brother became a father for the first time yesterday. I'm kind of missing it all as he is in the US, so having someone else's baby photos and first-time daddy-ness is helping a lot.

There's no logical reason for the inclusion of this picture, but I took it at about 7:15 am on my way to the office (notice nearly deserted streets) on Sunday morning and think it looks jolly nice. Hooray for NYC.

Very nice it does look! I spent part of the weekend around my cousin's babies/young kids, and while they're older than Charlotte (one only by three months), they gave me a sense of the controlled chaos wee ones can bring to one's life. ;-)

This weekend I participated in the baptism of my brother's nine-month-old triplets, including my godson William, amd lemme tell ya, I got overwhelmed by baby-love big-time. This has never happened to me before, as typically I don't like being in the company of small children and resent mass-media baby fetishism, but yesterday I just wanted to hold William and play with him all day.

pretty cute, Alex!

I must say I'm having a bit of trouble reconciling the doting father with the guy I remember with both middle fingers raised in the midst of a crowded concert floor, evidently saying hello in his unique way to his friend across the floor...

great show, though, Tricky just after Maxinquaye opening for PJ Harvey after To Bring You My Love. Black Steel In the Hour of Chaos, baby, the guitarist sounded like Eddie Hazell that night...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 02:36 (twenty years ago) link

I hardly ever read ILE, but happened to pop over while watching the Pistons (hopefully) beat the Lakers and this thread happened to be at the top. Skimming through it in order without knowing anything about the situation is as harrowing and dramatic as any work of fiction, with some kind of gangbusters happy ending.

It also just so happens that today is the day I heard the heartbeat of my first (due in January) for the first time, at my wife's second doctor's appointment. So I consider this coincidence a good omen.

Congratulations Alex -- Charlotte is beautiful.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:00 (twenty years ago) link

Congratulations, Chris!!! Don't believe the hype, it's scary -- but not nearly as horrific as some people make it out to be (or maybe I just haven't hit that part yet). It is a life-changer though.

Thanks and kudos to you!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:05 (twenty years ago) link

Good thoughts for Chris! And Alex...yeah, it's unfortunate, but it might not have been as unfortunate if you didn't simultaneously look like you were recovering from a hangover, being homeless and getting two black eyes. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

a hangover, being homeless and getting two black eyes.

Parenthood in a nutshell.

Really, it does my poor old heart good to see this bebe and her glowing parents. Enough to make me want another of my own.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

thanks. We feel reasonably prepared to actually be parents, at least as prepared as we're going to get (I have half brothers who were infants when I was in high-school and college, so changing diapers, feeding, and all that won't be new to me). It's other stuff -- work/daycare logistics, costs, etc -- that seems daunting. There have only been a couple of times so far when the enormity of it all has made start to hyperventilate :-)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago) link

Aw. :-)

I think that pink dress is the most feminine (as socially constructed) thing I've seen her in yet! Where's the black T-shirt for her?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 June 2004 01:11 (twenty years ago) link

We have lots of conventionally "feminine" outfits for her, but she only fits into a few of'em. Some wiseacre friends of mine gave her a little black t-shirt that reads "Daddy Drinks Because I Cry" (which is all too true) and a little black smock/dress with the Ramones logo on it (complete with a pair of little black socks), but neither would fit at the moment.

I'm still waiting for the ILX onezie for her to arrive.
