Let's pick the city with the ugliest people!

I feel like being an ass, so let's get to it; what city have you been to that overall had the ugliest people you've seen?

Right now I think my pick is Philadelphia, but Boston is a very close second. New York might have to be disqualified because it's so large that it's got hordes and hordes of ugly AND attractive people.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

olympia, wa.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

do not attempt to argue me on this.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY

donut bitch can back me up.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

well, we know that philadelphia beats boston in at least one category ... at least in dan's mind.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

giving lie to dan's theory: jill scott, angie stone.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, now I want to go to both Olympia and Elizabeth!

(xpost Philly beats Boston in almost every category I can think of except choral music!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost Yeah, but for every Jill Scott there are about 50 Sleestacks!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

haha dan do NOT go to olympia.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

my vote (for big cities): jacksonville, fl

my vote (for small cities): wilkes-barre, pa; edison, nj; schenectady, ny [take yer pick]

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

even the fine products of the Curtis Institute, Mr. Perry?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha wllks-barre

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Paducah, Kentucky. It's like the back row from the Muppets, inbred over a thousand generations, all in one place.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

this is who he replaced, so maybe we're improving:

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Curtis Institute is all about putting out soloists, not ensemble singers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Major metropolitan areas = St. Louis.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

south eastern pa is so beautiful and yet populated with lepers.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like a currier & ives print crossed with a bosch painting.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

do you include the Main Line, or just the shit towns like Chester and Levittown?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHA ST LOUIS!

I remember encountering some shockingly unattractive people in Tokyo, too. It was actually really striking; when we left Japan and went to Korea it felt like we left Fuglyville for Supermodelland.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i have seen people on the main line easily as ugly as anyone in chester.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

edison = land of the lost 80s style. not good, british-black-overcoat-band style 80s -- it's bad mullet-and-cavariccis, bonjovi, toner-colored camaros style 80s.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

but olympia is like some fresh new hell compared to anywhere i've been on the east coast.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

san francisco wins for people trying their hardest to be ugly

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ugly is the new hot

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My hottness alone negates St. Lou from this debate, motherfuckers.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

european city with ugliest people = glasgow. ironically, it was also one of my fave european cities.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, zurich had a lot of ugly mothers too. but that might be because i hated switzerland in general.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me that I found the people of Edinburgh to be SHOCKINGLY attractive. It was a little unreal; I kept thinking everyone was a character actor.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

like abe vigoda?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose the fact that the entirety of the time I've spent in St. Louis has been in the company of goths, worn-out old hair-metallers, and music industry middle-management types might have swayed my judgement in a direction for the unfair. Sorry B.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, like that paragon of extreme hotness, ABE VIGODA.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

YEAH MANHATTAN ALSO HAS SOME REAL UGLY FUCKS

BUT A LOT OF THEM ARE FROM JERSEY -- LIKE EDISON OR ELIZABETH

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if I really believe in cities' populations being uglier than one another, except that I am sad that when I travel from poor area to rich/trendy area on a bus or something, I suddenly find lots of good looking women to ogle. Obviously this is partly hair, skincare and clothing (and of course there are uncool rich areas where the women just look gaudy) but probably it's not all that.

Having said all that, I usually find Icelandic women very attractive, though I've never actually been there.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

New York might have to be disqualified because it's so large that it's got hordes and hordes of ugly AND attractive people.

nah, they're all butt ugly

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

jess is actually right about olympia but I'm trying to pretend he isn't. bnw is otm about St. Louis.

A Minnesota city? Try HOPKINS.

(xpost OMG SUZY)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i think any city under 100,000 people should be disqualified actually.

haha x-post i was walking through it to get somehwere else! we found a sink on the sidewalk.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The sink was probably the youngest, prettiest thing near any of the Soho clubs. Except for you, of course. Kisses etc.

Manhattan has a lot of bizarrely ugly plastic surgery victims, as does LA. Though I saw a far worse one in Maryland once! She looked like she went in and asked to look like Kylie Minogue and something went very, very wrong.

xpost aja it is dinnertime.

Allyzay, Monday, 8 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Winston-Salem, North Carolina. normal faces : w-s faces :: nag champa : sulphur mines

i try to look away but i cannot.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

LA = capital of plastic surgery disasters, if for no other reason than michael jackson lives there.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the problem here is that people in general are fucking hideous.

Houston has won the "fattest US city" prize three years running. So, Houston I say.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I shouldn't talk shit about a city I've never been to, but from what I understand New Orleans has it's share of homely.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Many small towns in Maine qualify.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No, N., Hopkins MN is just where mall rats seem to have invented Claw Hair and where guys still cruise down Main Street each Saturday night. Not even my sister would go there. Trust me and Dan on this one.

New Orleans proper has its moments, even if you discount the tourists, but it's less ugly than anywhere else I've spent much time in except maybe Denver; Bloomington probably doesn't qualify as ugly per se, but there's a real disconcerting Stepford Wives vibe to it.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

a lot of NYC uglies live in lawnguyland.

The great thing about living in such a hipster place like Williamsburg, Brooklyn is that you could have a really bad haircut (which I endured all summer) and people would think you were just being "ironic."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"I may here speak of some attempts by myself, made hitherto in too desultory a way, to obtain materials for a "Beauty-Map" of the British Isles. Whenever I have occasion to classify the persons I meet into three classes, "good, medium, bad," I use a needle mounted as a pricker, wherewith to prick holes, unseen, in a piece of paper, torn rudely into a cross With a long leg. I use its upper end for "good," the cross-arm for "medium," the lower end for "bad." The prick-holes keep distinct, and are easily read off at leisure. The object, place, and date are written On the paper. I used this plan for my beauty data, classifying the girls I passed in streets or elsewhere as attractive, indifferent, or repellent. Of course this was a purely individual estimate, bat it was consistent, judging from the conformity of different attempts in the same population. I found London to rank highest for beauty; Aberdeen lowest."

(but I'll let you off because "I used this plan for my beauty data, classifying the girls I passed in streets or elsewhere as attractive, indifferent, or repellent." is one of the best sentences I've ever read.)

as far as choral groups go though, philly has many fine ones. and many fine singers. as well as the academy of vocal arts one of the most renowned opera training schools in the world. lotsa their singers end up in world-class choral groups after they fail at becoming pavarotti or norman.

Why all the picking of American cities?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 8 December 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think because it's mostly Americans afraid to be seen as xenophobic participating in the thread. (Also, Americans are fugly.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i love how people are tryin to corral this back to its original intent.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Because Americans are ugly.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

If Americans are particularly uggle, why is this? You'd think that with all the waves of immigration we'd have the ideal genetic database for all kinds of mindblowing hybrids.

Eisbär, what the heck do you have against Schenectady? That's the third time you've mentioned it today!

The place with the ugliest people has got to be the creepy inbred Afrikaans areas of South Africa. They're so scared of having sex with black people that they've been marrying their cousins for 400 years.

THAT Kate (kate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Baltimore has extremely ugly people, but the good looking people there are better-looking and more plentiful than the ones in Manhattan, so it's out. Cambridge, Maryland has all of the ugly and none of the beauty.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when I was in Toledo, Ohio, there seemed to be an abundance of uglies. Also, when I used to visit my sister in Omaha and we'd go to the Omaha mall it seemed like the place was swarming with major hoagness.

Right now I think my pick is Philadelphia, but Boston is a very close second. New York might have to be disqualified because it's so large that it's got hordes and hordes of ugly AND attractive people.

Why don't I feel insulted that NYC rates third?

Want unattractive hordes? Florida. Never seen so many people trying so hard to find tiny amounts of youth.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god yes, Florida otm. Old people + rednecks = armpit of country. You might not be able to count Miami in that, I don't know, but the rest of the state, bleck.

Cincinnati and Cleveland have some ugly folks. Ohio has some ugly people.

But the ugliest people are usually in the rural areas.

However, some of the hottest models/actors/celebrities come from the Midwest.

Snack Pack Pudding Motherfucker, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
Whoever said Minnesota pick a city was crazy, at least if they were referring to Minneapolis where the percentage of good looking people to ugly people was ridiculously high. Even the beggars downtown were decent looking. I guess the people in St Cloud were a little weird looking but then my buddies and I did eat at Bonanza (after going to places like the CC Club and The Sunny Side-Up Café we just wanted to be around homely people for a bit!).

Ulan Bator - Mongolia

314, Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No way! I just saw a bunch of Ulan Batorians on Dave Bidini's The Hockey Nomad documentary and I thought they looked like merry Inuit people but with nicer teeth. They seemed kinda odd but not ugly.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If Americans are particularly uggle, why is this? You'd think that with all the waves of immigration we'd have the ideal genetic database for all kinds of mindblowing hybrids.

Because these various waves of immigrants tended to settle into discrete areas and live/socialize/breed among themselves, concentrating their gene pools.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Minnesota comes up on this thread so often only because ILX has a really incredibly disproportionate number of Minnesotans/former Minnesotans on it. I could name at least like 30 states with uglier people. Don't challenge me, I'll really do it.
