What amazes me about the movie is that Murray and Ramis get away with it. They never lose their nerve. Phil undergoes his transformation but never loses his edge. He becomes a better Phil, not a different Phil. The movie doesn't get all soppy at the end.
True. It's a great movie, and Murray is perfection in it.

perhaps i have seen the wrong murrary films, but i have seen enough at them, and its a look at me, dont look at me, blatant fake dryness. he puts on for hipsters, hes not funny and i find him grating as a dramatic actor, and movies which i should have liked---have been ruined by his mugging. (for example lost in translation or rushmore.)
i find his hipster reclaiming even more interesting, because i think its interesting that someone who cannot portray anything but deadpan, misantrhopic irony (thick thick thick irony) would be the favourite acting style of motherfuckers who think they are too cool for anything resembeling human feeling or interaction

of the wes anderson movies ive seen--i liked parts of rushmore deeply, and thot it was the begginning of something interesting, i have seen tennenbaums a dozen times and ive cried at least 6, it was sprawling but really well constructed, and found the two or three times ive tried watching zissou, i had to turn it off annoyed.

i mean if you go for the arched eyebrow artifice of a wes anderson flik (which can be endearing, yeah) then murray can throw in a nice star turn in it (& the gag of course is that he's generally playing characters that are SUPPOSED to be way emotionally repressed).
i think we've also established that lost in translation is a sure ilx argument starter. it was a nice movie i thought, but it really wasn't a comedy.

"I'm sure Charles Dickens would have wanted to see her nipples." - Scrooged
"Never in my wildest imagination did I ever dream I would have sons like these. " - Rushmore
"Can I have another one of these with some booze in it?" - Groundhog Day
"Generally you don't see that kind of behavior in a major appliance." - Ghostbusters
"Y'know, one day, Tito Puente will be dead, and you'll say, "Oh, yes, I've been listening to his work for years." - Stripes
"Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice." - Caddyshack
Richard Dreyfuss had most of the really good lines in 'What About Bob?' but Murray was awesome.

I think there's something to Anthony and others' criticism of Murray. Ever since he got 'rediscovered' through Anderson, he's been coasting on the same kind of roles and exact same performance in comedies, and none of them are really that funny or brilliant. Yeah, he stays perfectly still in reaction shots allowing the audience to imprint their feelings onto him - so groundbreaking, eh?
The quality of his performance now depends heavily on the quality of the movie - Rushmore and Tenenbaums good, Zissou and Cigarettes & Coffee terrible, Lost In Translation terribly mediocre.

- it's described, incidentally, as a "young adults" novel, which means it's for "kids who can read without moving their lips". Ugh, fuck you, anonymous Empireonline-douchebag.
Murray, huh? Love him. I've seen Groundhog Day an almost ironically large number of times (except it was the same movie each time through, so...) How is The Razor's Edge? I'm fond of the novel, but the only thing I know about the movie is some trivia about him having deal with the studio that he'd get to do that if he did Ghost Busters. Haven't seen Ghostbusters since I was in my early teens. For shame. I was shocked recently when I realized that Egon was played by a young, thin Harold Ramis.
I feel a strange urge to admit that I also think Steve Martin is GREAT. I just hate 95% of what he's appeared in. Shame, that.

Amazing actor. No sarcasm or irony intended. I thought of Bill Murray as a lightweight comedian, like a Chevy Chase, until I saw Lost In Translation. I was stunned by how good he was. Even midway through that film, when he was in the karaoke bar and about to sing, I thought "Okay, now he'll revert to character and be a goof." Instead, he spoke/sang More Than This in a way that sounded -- to me, at least -- sad and half-resigned to his circumstances and half-wondering if he should go forward with Scarlett Johansson's character.

I was at a White Sox game in the early 90s where he was sitting about 20 rows ahead of me, and he was hilarious, standing up, telling jokes, getting the crowd really into it. So he may be an arrogant jackass, but he was great that night, without being on the clock. BTW great game, Sox won on a bottom-of-the-9th Robin Ventura grand slam.

I love Bill Murray. I can't really think of anyone who has managed to build an on-screen persona like Bill Murray's: This fatalistic sort of miserable guy, who just sort of drifts through stories he seems distanced from while making well-timed dry quips throughout. Even in the one scene where they show him talking in the trailer for City of Embers he seems to have that trademark humorous distance from his character.
it's hard for me to even imagine real-life Billy Murray being anyone but the sort of grouchy sad clown character he plays.

ps deej, i think the reporter lifted your story:
Then again, perhaps he's just toying with us all. There's an urban legend that's gone round until no one is sure who it happened to, or if it happened at all. It was late one night, a few years ago, when a young man was walking through Union Square Park. He suddenly felt someone behind him, their hands over his eyes. When he turned in surprise, there was Bill Murray, his creased face leaning in close. Bill whispered, "No one is ever going to believe you," and then just walked away.

― Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)
Doubtful.
because Denzel Washington was behind the incredibly cowardly bullshit of “This is my character, not me.” He was really abusive to me and everybody on that movie, and his official explanation was that his character didn’t like me, but it was a dreadful experience. I spent my salary on time with my shrink just for helping me get through it, and what that led to was the very next big movie that I did. I should have said to the producers, “You get that guy in line, or I’m out of here.” Life’s too short.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 21 October 2009 01:16 (sixteen years ago)
I just saw Morbius's dismissive comment above. Lost in Translation may very well be my favorite movie of the decade too--probably Spellbound, but it's definitely close. I started watching films in the '60s, have a film degree that dates back to the '70s, and all in all, I've seen, I don't know, at least a couple of thousand films in my life. Last question. I have to know, because I love this story and want it to be true. There have been stories about you sneaking up behind people in New York City, covering their eyes with your hands, and saying: Guess who. And when they turn around, they see Bill Murray and hear the words "No one will ever believe you."
[long pause] I know. I know, I know, I know. I've heard about that from a lot of people. A lot of people. I don't know what to say. There's probably a really appropriate thing to say. Something exactly and just perfectly right. [long beat, and then he breaks into a huge grin] But by God, it sounds crazy, doesn't it? Just so crazy and unlikely and unusual?

Okay. Well, how about Garfield? Can you explain that to me? Did you just do it for the dough? No! I didn't make that for the dough! Well, not completely. I thought it would be kind of fun, because doing a voice is challenging, and I'd never done that. Plus, I looked at the script, and it said, "So-and-so and Joel Coen." And I thought: Christ, well, I love those Coens! They're funny. So I sorta read a few pages of it and thought, Yeah, I'd like to do that. I had these agents at the time, and I said, "What do they give you to do one of these things?" And they said, "Oh, they give you $50,000." So I said, "Okay, well, I don't even leave the fuckin' driveway for that kind of money."And it's not like you're helping out an indie director by playing Garfield.Exactly. He's in 3,000 newspapers every day; he's not hurtin'. Then this studio guy calls me up out of nowhere, and I had a nice conversation with him. No bullshit, no schmooze, none of that stuff. We just talked for a long time about the movie. And my agents called on Monday and said, "Well, they came back with another offer, and it was nowhere near $50,000." And I said, "That's more befitting of the work I expect to do!" So they went off and shot the movie, and I forgot all about it. Finally, I went out to L.A. to record my lines. And usually when you're looping a movie, if it takes two days, that's a lot. I don't know if I should even tell this story, because it's kind of mean. *beat* What the hell? It's interesting. So I worked all day and kept going, "That's the line? Well, I can't say that." And you sit there and go, What can I say that will make this funny? And make it make sense? And I worked. I was exhausted, soaked with sweat, and the lines got worse and worse. And I said, "Okay, you better show me the whole rest of the movie, so we can see what we're dealing with." So I sat down and watched the whole thing, and I kept saying, "Who the hell cut this thing? Who did this? What the fuck was Coen thinking?" And then they explained it to me: It wasn't written by that Joel Coen.
I had these agents at the time, and I said, "What do they give you to do one of these things?" And they said, "Oh, they give you $50,000." So I said, "Okay, well, I don't even leave the fuckin' driveway for that kind of money."
And it's not like you're helping out an indie director by playing Garfield.
Exactly.

What if Bill Murray just showed up in your Karaoke room?
One of our users named Mike (pictured above) is a very lucky man. I was sent these photo after he and his friends went out to have a few drinks at their local Karaoke bar, Karaoke One 7 in NYC. Shortly after their arrival, Mike noticed that a couple women had just walked into the place with a man that looked a lot like… Bill Murray?! The crew went out to confirm that the man, was in fact, Bill Murray himself. Mike's friend even mustered the courage to invite Bill to chill in their room, but they just laughed it off. There's no way that was going to happen.I'll let Mike take it from here:"About 15 minutes later we get a knock on the door... IT'S BILL F@#KING MURRAY! We were all shocked of course but at that point we were already pretty trashed so the party just kept going. He was super nice and they all fit right in. His girl was really cute, and as far as i remember, from Amsterdam. She sang a bunch of random French songs! At some point he bought us all a round of some weird green drink and wouldn't tell us what it was. I later found out it was Chartreuse some French liqueur made by monks. Apparently you are supposed to sip it ... like an idiot I just shot it down. The high point was when Bill and I sang a duet of an Elvis song called, "Marie's the Name." Random I know, but so was the night. We were all drinking and dancing and screaming our asses off.We tried not to make him feel uncomfortable though of course later we all joked about picking the Ghostbusters theme. Amazingly, they stuck around the entire night, about 4 hours. As you can imagine it was all pretty surreal. Something I will never ever forget…Viva Bill Murray!"

I don't mean to imply that everybody old is lame and everybody young is cool or anything like that - it just bugs me how quickly people are to herd together within their age group, with everyone outside their age group being deemed as inappropriate to spend time with. I'm sure part of it has to do with lacking shared interests, avoiding conflict, but the extreme prevalence of it is something I've become cognizant of as I get older and it just bums me out. Bill seems like one of those rare people who is comfortable moving between age groups - which is, I'm sure, enabled by his celebrity, but it still strikes me as admirable.

"I'm saying there's something sad and desperate about the way he keeps showing up at random events full of exclusively young people."more sad and desperate than appearing in TWO garfield movies?
"Bill seems like one of those rare people who is comfortable moving between age groups" he seems unnervingly comfortable anywhere, like say hanging with RZA, then being in a garfield movie, any of these things which ought to any normal human pretty self-conscious.
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 6 January 2011 22:48 (fifteen years ago)
to me, murray's by no means "sad pathetic." but there is a very sad quality to him. every once in a while a comedian comes along who has that kind of depth, but it's rare, and he has it.
i hadn't paid much attention to murray's plum roles up to lost in translation, so i went into the theatre thinking that -- from what i'd heard of the film -- murray wasn't a good choice for the lead character. i walked out of the film convinced that no other actor could have done the role anywhere near as well. ymmv, obv., but to me, when murray's on, he's a utterly moving, transcendent, breathtaking actor.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 6 January 2011 22:52 (fifteen years ago)
I think the sad thing is that he's an alcoholic. This also probably being the reason he likes 'partying' with young strangers.

Bill Murray going out of his way to hang with you is sort of a meme at this point.
It's like he's decided to live every day like it's the day that will get him out of Groundhog Day, which is totes commendable imo.
― Cunga, Thursday, 6 January 2011 22:59 (fifteen years ago)
dude i know worked on some bill murray film back in the way early 90s and told me this story:
one day bill said he was taking the whole crew/cast/everyone out for a party but wouldn't say what it was....that evening a bunch of tour buses he hired showed up and took everyone away....
they arrived at the local arena (it was down south can't remember where or what movie they were shooting)...bill had bought a huge section of floor seats to the MC Hammer concert for everyone...drinks on him, etc etc...
anyway bill ended up getting onstage with MC Hammer and dancing with him and split his pants open...
basically sounded like the greatest night of all time
― lemmy ruxpin (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 6 January 2011 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
I've actually thought about this w/r/t Bill Murray before, and as much as there's nothing more depressing than "50 year old guy alone at college house party" types, yeah bill murray is probably a lot more fun than most people my age, myself included is probably more accurate. Who knows why he's doing it, but it seems like he's creating more fun/humour than he is killing it/making things creepy (which is where he departs from your typical alone 50 year old guy at college parties). I mean he seems like he's far more WKIW (at least funnier) than many appropriately wild and crazy 20-somethings. However, he could just be doing it for pathetic reasons, like creepily hitting on 20 year old girls, or alcohol abuse, I obviously can't say myself.
― EDB, Thursday, 6 January 2011 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

there was a new yorker article about ... i can't remember, maybe rob reiner ... that had a story of them in some remote country. bill disappeared and was found in a local Primitive Village hamming it up slapstick-style, since they didn't share a language, in front of a huge circle of villagers all busting a gut. so maybe this is just what he does.

I'm not saying I know for a fact BM has no demons or unhappiness -- dude's twice divorced and his 2nd wife accused him of some pretty ugly stuff -- but it just kind of seems like he's one of the few comedy stars who has the kind of impish sense of fun and absurdity in his real life that you might expect or hope for based on his characters in the movies. Of course lots of young people love him and would like to hang out with him, don't see anything wrong in and of itself with him going along with it and enjoying himself.

Just scroll down this page, and you'll quickly see what this bullshit is about. Note the plethora of happening scenesters, clothing referring to or made entirely from bacon, the numerous fashionable bacon tattoos, the use of bacon in unlikely foodstuffs like cupcakes and beverages, the prevalence of otherwise unrelated products prominently leveraging the cachet of bacon, the totally self-parodic overuse of it in every imaginable scenario, etc.

― Philip Nunez, Friday, 7 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)
Patton Oswalt makes references to shit that his audience couldn't possibly understand. I think at one point on one of his CDs he talks about putting a This Mortal Coil album on repeat and crouching in a corner or something. Clearly he was a geek that somehow transitioned to mainsteam, though I'm not sure how. He's a weird looking dude who got a role on the terrible, bland, and uninteresting-- but popular-- King of Queens.

It is a nerd thing. I browse reddit time to time - great a website as it is, it is a mega-church for conglomeration of every lonely boy-man in the universe. It's variated tho: there's been "cool foods" (O_o) trends... it's gone from a fanaticism for pie, a pseudo-one for cake (a la a game called "Portal" where a catchphrase resulted: "The cake is a lie"), and now bacon has current reign. I'm just gonna take a stab at it and say avocados are next.

IMDB says it was supposed to be directed by Jonathan Demme, which I can totally see in a Something Wild vein.
There's a scene where he's standing next to Geena Davis and easily tops her by a few inches in height. I was thinking shenanigans, that he was more like 5'10", but after more fact-checking on IMDB, it says he's 6'2"!

Bill Murray Can Crash Here
How did Bill Murray spend his summer vacation? The actor has been traveling across the country during his self-described “Bill Murray Can Crash Here” tour, hitting up pretty much any place that will have him.Known to pop up in the unlikeliest karaoke bars and house parties in New York City, he “is looking to take a vacation around the United States,” his rep announced last month. “He’s hoping that if he shows up to your party with a bottle of wine or vegetable tray, you will be able to make the proper accommodations for him. This includes allowing him to sleep on your couch or in a spare bedroom.”“Any house or location interested must have a sheet or banner of some kind attached to their establishment,” he said. And while it’s unclear who his host was, Murray was certainly mingling with the locals on posh Martha’s Vineyard this past week. On Friday, he stumbled into the island’s no-frills Portuguese-American club in Oak Bluffs, hopping up on stage at one point to join the band in a rendition of Van Morrison’s “Glo- ria.”Then on Tuesday, he caught a concert by Danny Kochner at dive bar Dreamland. “He danced all night and talked to anyone who talked to him,” Michelle Conti told Flash. “I talked to him for a minute and he was like any other person.”Murray explained, “People are like, ‘Oh, I guess I invited him.’ As long as you behave well and you’re willing to dance, people are OK with you being at a party.”

something tells me people who say he is a dick are either haters or caught him on a really bad day (/shoot/year)
he acted the fuck out of lost in translation. whether or not you liked the film (and my understanding is that most people did) he conveyed all kinds of nuanced emotions and whatnot, often without even speaking a line. the whole story was 90% told on his face/body language
also how good was his cameo in zombieland! rabid fans should check out the outtakes where he improvs 15 different dying lines, all are funny

― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 19 October 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)
Ghostbusters 3 should be a found-footage horror-drama. Like, it starts with the mysterious death of Murray's and Weaver's characters. A note left behind leads their grandaughter to a box of old videotapes, each packed with footage of ghostbusting (perfect way to use old cutting room floor stuff/young versions of the actors). She notices, however, a mysterious figure in the periphery of several of the clips. It turns out the Ghostbusters made a deal with the Devil, who has been steadily claiming their souls. So the grandchildren of Murray, Ackroyd, Ramis and Hudson all get together with a Ernie Hudson's aging wife, who is an expert in voodoo (because she's black). Then there's an elaborate ceremony in which all four grandkids are technically killed and their ghosts are sent to Hell to save their tormented relatives.
This could also work as a sequel to Flatliners.

Thought St Vincent was pretty dreadful. Murray should have won back-to-back Supporting and Best Actor awards for Rushmore and Lost in Translation. It's almost like he's still angry 15 years later, so he cynically drew up a checklist of every cliché that gets people acting awards: lovable drunk curmudgeon, angelic kid, hooker with a heart etc., a medical crisis that must be overcome, a school bully redeemed, accents, on and on. Because--and only because--I'm having my usual holiday bout of self-pity, the big assembly at the end moved me in spite of itself. And I did like him singing along with Dylan over the end credits--great song choice. (He starts off in his Hunter S. Thompson voice in that sequence.) I wonder if the coda was his idea.

It does suffer from pesky pacing problems. I get what they were going for, as the mournful and plodding start is supposed to be vindicated [SPOILER ALERT] by the segue into Clooney/Cyrus fantasy sequence. (Which is actually pretty charming, as such things go. I even re-watched some highlights, fast-forwarding through the boring bits. Good use of goofy Clooney.)
They could have shortened the mournful bits - I think they were going for something like the black-and-white vs. color segments of Wizard of Oz, but those were better balanced IMO.
― ready for the raptor (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 9 December 2015 17:10 (ten years ago)
While watching this was thinking about Murray and his love/loathe of lounge singers, from SNL to this, and how great a stroke it was to have a lounge band in Lost in Translation. With this one, there are moments when he's not making fun of singing but really apparently enjoying himself. In so many movies he comes across as amusing himself (to get through the scene) more than enjoying himself in the scene.
― my harp and me (Eazy), Wednesday, 9 December 2015 18:06 (ten years ago)
Agreed.
I am not sure it was well-paced for Netflix. As many have noted (here and elsewhere), the viewer can get bored fast and either wander off or switch to something else. They feel it's not going anywhere, so if it's not grabbing them immediately, why stick with it to see if it gets better? I have heard a lot of people saying they found it dreary and switched away early. So they never experienced the redemptive jump into brightness and (comparative) fun.
May have worked better as live broadcast, or in a theater, where the viewer has committed more intentionally and may therefore be more likely to stick with it until it gets going.

Sofia Coppola has her more famous and talented father, Francis Ford Coppola.
Phoenix lead singer Thomas Mars is Sofia's husband.
Jason Schwartzman's mother is Talia Shire, who is Francis Ford Coppola's sister. He is a first cousin to Sofia.
George Clooney is the nephew of Rosemary Clooney. His father Nick Clooney was also a TV newsman of some note.
Rashida Jones is the daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton.
Maya Rudolph is the daughter of Minnie Riperton and songwriter Richard Rudolph.
Miley Cyrus owes her chance and her abominable career to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
Murray, David Johansen, Jenny Lewis, Michael Cera, Paul Shaffer, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, and Julie White are all commoners.

Chris Rock is pretty much the only actor in the special who's used that way... All the other famous people are playing characters (and aren't super famous to begin with), except for Miley Cyrus and George Clooney; and the former's appearance is totally justified, since a show like this should obviously have a famous singer do Christmas tunes (and she handles that duty really well), while the latter's cameo is actually quite funny. I agree that Chris Rock is kinda cringey in this, but like Abanana says, it gets much better after his bit.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 25 December 2016 16:32 (nine years ago)
yeah it did get better but the middle really sags. i enjoyed the final 10 minutes or so when they just went Hollywood and ditched the storyline. Jenny Lewis was great and Maya Rudolph was really great, i had heard things and she did a really great job. the part where Jason Swartzman sings the really hip Todd Rundgren song just felt like a waste of time. ditto Phoenix. ditto Michael Cera. felt like half the special was either self-depreciating jokes about how bad the special is or yeah here's a famous guy/girl singing a song that is maybe Christmas related.
the ending was great. Miley did good even if she over sings, everything she does kind of has this fake Disney sheen to it for me, but at least by then the set actually looked like a Christmas show. Clooney was pretty funny, peeping out from behind the trees. Amy Poehler and especially Paul Shaffer are the MVPs on this one.
pretty decent thing to have on in the background while wrapping presents.
