i may have to photo some greyhound racing for work - and other people have expressed interest in going to the dogs too, what better place than sunny Walthamstow? the only question (other than 'will there be pie?') is when? A couple of weeks from now perhaps?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so jealous.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Will there be pie?

robster (robster), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh I could make it in "a couple of weeks from now", what a good idea stevem! I could even break my diet for chicken inna basket.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I refuse to buy any meat-based food products at a dog track. Will there be beer? Will this be in Walthamstow?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

um, yes, Walthamstow. beer probably, pie maybe, dogs definitely.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

we were talking about this on saturday weren't we?

i'd go for 7 feb meself like, as i have football-related activities the next two saturdays.

unless we fancy all skiving a monday and going up for the special...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

7 of Feb was decided upon as a *good* thing

I can't remember there being pie, but there is scampi. and hot nuts.

chris (chris), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

7 Feb is the only weekend I can do for ages.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

7th Feb sounds good to me. I might get to go in the daytime as well during working hours (blimey)!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i envisaged it as more of a weeknight thing tho btw, but i guess that would be tricky for the Saarferners

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Catford DogFAP!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, worst idea ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

idiot MattDC

chris (chris), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple good friends of mine live in the 'stow who I should visit more often. I've heard going to the dogs is good times. I'm in.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we do a weekday?

Ed (dali), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Walthamstow is a bit out of the way though so weeknights would stop a lot of people going. Myself, for example.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, i've fapped in Clapham on a weeknight whilst living in Ruislip AND gone to work next day, and that's without taking the tube. but it looks like Saturday 7th is best for a lot of people anyway.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hasn't Catford Doggydrome closed down?

Lord Byron Lived Here, Monday, 19 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanna go to the dog track! i'll be in london then but i think my evening commitments will keep me away, boo.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hot nuts!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well the Stadium opens at 6.30pm so why don't we FAP at a nearby pub (i.e. meet up around 3 or 4 close to the venue) and then head over there. Lauren you should definitely try and join us if that's not too late to be clashing with your own arrangements, come win some dosh (you'll need it with this lousy exchange rate at the mo maybe ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, shit. no way i can do that, time-wise. but y'all should take your winnings and come back into town and buy drinks for me at some club called transmission, where the ratpure will be dj'ing after their no doubt triumphant brats show at brixton academy.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

bratpure! weinershnitzel!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds alright - i like the fact there is another event called Trans-Mission that night too, tho the former has more ratpurish appeal, hem hem

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm. the possibilites for mistaken identity between these two events are intriguing. weinerschnitzel, indeed.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, Camden or drag queens, it's a tough call

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

After the races, can we do that thing where we adopt a retired greyhound and take it home? I want to call mine Trailways!

the river fleet, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP at a nearby pub = you are clearly nuts, they are all full of menkos.

FAP beforehand at the Village though = good thing, plus it's only a ten minute bus ride from the Dogs

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently one of Britains toughest pubs is very close (this according to Sky's programme last night)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't it great though?!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I blooming missed it (and am pi$$ed off about it)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

:-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sure it'll be on skymix at some point in the next week.

oh, do you get skymix?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yes we do

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm away that week, but certain up for a bit of doggy action in the next few weeks.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

phew, yes, we do.

back on topic, they do a very good deal, if you book it in advance, of entrance (usually £6) two £1 tote bets, 2 drinks, and a meal (chicken and chips, etc) for £13.50. web-site's www.wsgreyhound.co.uk

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

weekday nights are tuesdays and thursdays. Afternoon meets on mondays and fridays sound like a bargain, but are a little impractical.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The pub from last night's programme was the Tavern on the Hill (formerly the Higham Hill Tavern) and is highly recommended.

On Thursdays they have a French menu with emphasis on cuisine from Alsace. The landlord is very knowledgeable about new world wine, particularly Chilean merlot from the high Andes bodegas.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Afternoion meets are a blast in the summertime. Half price bar, free in, its win win win all the way (did it on my birthday a couple fo years ago. Worse for wear afterwards).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP at the Tavern on the Hill anyone?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

if Steve phones ahead then maybe

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

well BOOKING ahead sounds like a good idea

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

BUMP

hope people are still up for this

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i can actually come along now. i thought i'd be away that weekend, but looks like i'll be around. count me in.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

are you following me?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Can i come even though i am pretty much a lurker nowadays?

alix (alix), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yes it's on, good stuff. you'd need huskies to get there right now though

chris (chris), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yes stevem, i'm following you. can't you tell from the way that i appear in your life practically every minute? well, at least every 2-3 weeks...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

After the races, can we do that thing where we adopt a retired greyhound and take it home?

I'm not even remotely a dog person and yet I want to adopt a retired/rescued greyhound...do it and name the pup ILX!

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be wondrous! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Geezers Kiosk

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we discuss betting now? I've never put a proper bet on anything in my life. I'm not sure quite where to start.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm worried that 2004 is going to be just like 2003 in weird ways. several things have already repeated themselves. and last february i went for the first time to see dog racing.

matt, you'll want to get betting advice from someone other than me. i didn't win once all night, which seems crazy given that i used the sure-fire technique of picking dogs based on cute names...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

pick the dog without the wooden leg, give, geezer with blackboard money, never see it again

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

bump.

betting for dummies:
http://www.tophorseracinglinks.com/html/how_to.htm

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I am king of dog racing betting. Get the Racing Post on the day is U&K. I can talk you through a Trifecta if you are crazy barmy barmy boy.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this Trifecta of which you speak?

the dogfox (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

First three dogs in the correct order. Pays out BIG.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

so, pete, do you think your so-called 'strategy' works better than picking names based on which ones sound cute?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard Stevem Honeybun is practically three-legged.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And not in THAT way before anyone says anything.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I went I won 11 out of 13 times.

So, er, yes.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

humph. i guess that beats my record of winning 0 out of 10 times.

is it possible that it was a freak of statistics?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

stupidly complicated bets are the best (if not the most winningest) kind

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have given up doing such accumulator stylee bets; Mixu Paataleinen's 86th minute equaliser for Wolves against Wimbledon in 1997 destroyed a 6 game fixed-odds coupon that was going to win me about 200 quid. Bastard

Tuomas - if you ever seen him, give him a slap from me.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.stjohnstonefc.co.uk/newspics/mixu.jpg

What's going on with the asymmetric hair?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The hair as well as the face leaning to the left are from an invisible Dave slapping him.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Die you bastard, die!

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

what does this have to do with dogs?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Look at him, he's a minger. And his name is MIXU!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

but he isn't an actual dog. or a racer. is it just about betting on him?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a low down dirty hound dawg.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Colette, there's something of the Aja about your questions tonight ;)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be wearing a suit for this

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 31 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

can anyone explain why i was convinced that this was next friday, even though i knew it was on saturday? idiot steve...

...hopefully pete will check on his return from spain next friday and not just go straight there...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't come, which pains me. Have fun. And bet on lane 5 in the first race for me, okay?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd missed vicky's post about a bargain if we book ahead. do we all need to book together to do this, or just do it individually.

and this is saturday evening, not during the day, right?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

no, not during the day, that's on a Friday and Monday iirc

You can book and get the bargain.... if you want scampi in a basket etc, otherwise it's about eigfht qyuid to get in (possibly less - definitely less if you go in the "popular" side)

chris (chris), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, my typing went a bit awry there

chris (chris), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you can do it individually, you get given tokens which you then exchange for booze/food/bets etc. if it works the same way as a similar scheme at Wimbledon dogs.

It's probably the best way, as they'll want you to pay when you book, which turns into a nightmare when you are booking for a group.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

so we can all just book individually?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean you haven't phoned up to check in advance?!

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you are confusing me with the stevem who had hair

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ooohhhh! did you go to the cutting crew/cutting barn or whatever it was called on white lion street? how does it look?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, been away, have you had it cut?! Was similar to samson then, you got your locks chopped off, and your anal tendancies disappeared?

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"......"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and your anal tendancies disappeared?

no that's jess.

on a whim i went to George's which is very near you C. it doesn't look good sadly - lot shorter than i intended, schoolboy revival/error - PH34R...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Sssh, just don't tell k!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i am actually more gutted about it than i think kate could be

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww petal!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sure you look lovely, don't worry.

and the best part is getting to look forward to seeing you growing it out now!

(and if it's any consolation, i like boys with short hair anyway. so it'll just be kate that's heartbroken!)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

take pics pls, esp of stevem!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody hellfire, a night at the dogs. I and the boy will most likely be there.

So someone tell me what's happening? With pub and phoningbooking ahead? I need sensible people to find these things out for me.
/space cadet

I am sad about the demise of stevem's hair. It's tragic like Love Story.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it will return (although not to the same length/level of sweptitude)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Cor! Dogz, pubz, gambling thrillz, scampi-in-a-basket and Stevem's haircut. Looks I'll be popping up to London Village at the weekend.

robster (robster), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You most certainly will, honeybunch.

/sickening?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Pre-dogs pub recommendation please Chris or Vicky.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god, nowhere near the dogs. I was in the Bell the other night, when I forgot to take my keys with me and had over an hour to kill, and it was fine. It's a bit pub, and between walthamstow central and the dogs, and also handy for blackhorse rd too, as it's on the 123 bus route, but I don't know what it's like on a saturday night.

The best pub would be the village, but it's a bit too much of a detour, and probably will be busy.

What time were people thinking of going to the pub/turning up at the dogs?

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll probably come - scampi in a basket = draw of the century!

With BINBAGS ON FEET FOR SHOES

Sarah (starry), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

all of the pubs on the route have the potential to be a bit tasty, possibly the Rose and Crown?

chris (chris), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

had we better do some user testing in the next couple of days then, as we've never been in there? Or shall we take a chance? It does look nicer than the Bell, from the outside. But I did see an advert in the window for some folk nonsense when i walked past the other day...

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone want to bring me scampi in a basket at that transmission thingy saturday night (the ratpure one not the tranny one)? probably involves free stella, ooh.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my God, fear http://www.ken.lees.clara.co.uk/oldrose.crown.html

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

christ on a bike! They must do that in an upstairs room. Tgey used to do a film quiz that was supposed to be really good.

chris (chris), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Lawks. At least a folky pub will not have embittered members of East17 lurking in the corners telling the unwary tales of their glory days.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it does not look at all like a folky pub.

chris (chris), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

POKY MCLUUD is playing there!!!

(sorry this is a pathetic in-joke that only i get, involving the name Rory McLeod being written on a blackboard and bits of it being rubbed out)

POKY!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren i doubt Monarch doorman will allow scampi onto the premises but i will do my best

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

an outrage, obviously.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 2 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

it's almost worth turning up with it in full view to hear them gruffly blurt "sorry mate, no breaded fish product"

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"b-b-b-b-b-but it's battered!"

chris (chris), Monday, 2 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.wsgreyhound.co.uk/charlie.chans.htm

This is urgent and key for post-dogs action. Laydees only have to be over 21 to get in, but gents, sorry, under 23-year-olds not allowed. WTF?

So is it a good idea to book for the chicken-in-a-basket special in advance? Or are we going in the 'popular' side? And is 'popular' a euphemism for 'minging'?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

avoid Charlie Chans, trust me on this one.

Popular = cheaper, slightly less nice seats and food.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And it means you're on the opposite side to the winning post. They have video screens, but it's not the same.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a very good point

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie Chans won the "prestigious Daily Mirror Club of the Year award". ph34r.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're a fireman, ambulanceman or a policeman, you can get in free some nights.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

In the line of duty, I presume.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

nope, CC's likes to do it's bit for our brave boys

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Services nights are the mark of a quality establishment. They have them at the various clubs round here that require vanloads of police on standby at chucking-out time.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi, Walthamstow steering committee, which pub and when?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ye Olde Rose and Crowne - Hoe street, from half six to seven/seven thirty, from whence we will decamp to the dogs, by bus.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Bounce bounce bounce, follow the bouncing thread.

Umm has anyone actually booked for this? Stevem have you phoned ahead? Am I really anal for caring?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't booked yet, so laaazy...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've checked my finances and can't make the dogz0r now, sorry!

I'll have to con you to go against NEXT month. DOH!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but sarah, think of it as an investment innit ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.wsgreyhound.co.uk/special.htm - this is the special offer! It IS quite good innit, but crikey this month is really that tight, especially after my shoes falling apart necessitated getting some news one innit. Have some scampi for me!!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

can book between 9 and 4 - may not be many left tho by the sound of things (yes i just rang them) - argh, we need a headcount - and who's already booked? i won't be able to call them until just after 10 tomorrow but if someone can ring earlier than that then please book a 'six pack' for me as well

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't plannning on booking at all, you can just rock up as well you know

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think just rocking up may be the weapon of choice here, even if it will turn out more expensive. Hmmmmm.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i don't think we're talking huge amounts are we?

i'm pro-rocking up and getting on with it :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock up.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock on.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, how much money should a complete novice bring along with him? And what's the sensible sort of amount to actually bet without looking like a tight-fisted wuss?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is pete and his patented 'method'? I fear for my easily-earned pennies.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

we usually bet a quid or two on races, with a fiver on the last race maybe if yr feeling lucky. You can bet as little as 50p if you want (at the tote that is, Bookies usually have a fiver lower limit)

about 8 quid to get in, then it's just beer money. And don't forget your copy of the racing post.

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought tote had raised their minimum bet to £1?

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

have they? ah well, it won't break the bank will it?

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Lookee here for betting advice

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

£20 should do you fine, and that's assuming you lose a quid on every race.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

instead of rocking up can't we just turn up on the day without booking?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

pete's not back from spain til today hence his quietness.

sorry, i'm crabby this morning. i'm sure it'll pass.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll call you - just find Ye Olde Rose and Crowne and meet us in there innit

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

chris and vicky
me and meg
ewing, hopkins, baran, et al
collette
liz and rob
steve and matt

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha stevem and matt are a couple.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's better than being involved in the Ewing/Baran/Hopkins threesome.

I think Lixi is coming as well...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno yet. Maybe.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

looks tomorrow's gonna be very cold and very wet

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

s'ok, i'm not saying YOU MUST DECIDE NOW, just making sure i haven't forgotten about anyone :)

are there inside bits? or are we getting very cold and wet?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC is predicting sunshine for the Lunding area tomorrow.

robster (robster), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be raining in Stevem's heart.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, what time is the shiznit going down?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

6.30, Rose & Crowne.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

rose and crown, hoe street 6.30ish
on to the dogs 7-7.30ish

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh, Hoe Street.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you must stand outside - it's the law (and you'll still be under cover) It's not the same if you go inside, really.

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sensible shoes, people! This means I cannot wear pointy ones, *sigh*.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

:-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

is stevem still getting all dressed up?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

suits for the boys, dresses for the ladies

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if it's raining. I'm not getting mud on my white shoes...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'm not getting dressed up to stand outside!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Im a back. See you tomorow with method. For metod you need to buy racing post.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

is anyone more bored/less busy than me today and willing to find a map of where this pub is and an address? i don't know that area at all...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=537249&Y=189483&A=Y&Z=1

should see you right (the arrow is where the pub is)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

so basically, get to walthamstow central, turn left once you get on to the main road and follow it past the shops until you see the pub on your right.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the end of the market will be on your left, walk on. then HSBC and the old cinema. you'll bear left round a corner then the pub is on your right after about two minutes, you can't miss it, it's huge.

and erm, it does a quiz the first saturday of the month.

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh cheeses...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem have you somehow engineered all this?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

we can't do both the quiz and the dogs though - i assume they clash?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

great day - i only picked the winner once but others did better - getting on the same bus as Pete en route to the FT Focus Group then seeing Richard Blackwood from atop in Tottenham, talking into a very 'Bobby Brown - My prerogative' style headset as he walked along the street - was an early highlight, as was seeing someone who looked exactly like me (prior to haircut) except he had narrower eyes at the dog track later, weird

everybody getting on the bus and leaving me behind = total classic

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(i look forward to 'have we left stevem behind?' replacing 'has stevem phoned ahead?' which i think has had it's day in the sun really)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It did indeed rock - I won three bets which was far better than I was expecting, all of them on fairly short odds though. Who won the most money, I wonder?

I think I would have been far more alert at the dogs had it not been for the four and a half hours of afternoon drinking that preceded it, Chris and Vicky you are both marvellous hosts.

Did I really kiss Mark C's head last night, Barthez/Blanc style, or am I just imagining it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 8 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Lucky Barry as he is now known

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

did we leave Stevem behind? Steve are you posting from the dodgy internet place on Hoe street?

It was lovely to see everyone in our neighbourhood. Sorry we scooted off so quickly, tiredness kicked in hard. Hopefully photos to follow soon.

chris (chris), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Good fun evening, after a day of looking at art in town: CULTURE SHOCKAH. I only won once, only 80p at that. Damn, I was sure a dog called Lethal Tracy would mow down the opposition...

Rob twisted his ankle at Walthamstow Bus Station, then we drank vodka at Pete's and slagged off pop videos. And then it was very cold on the final leg of the journey home.

Sorry we left you behind, Stevem! Were you taking pictures or something? Dedication's what you need...

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"tiredness"...

i won three in a row (2 place bets and an each way though), but then was drawn in by DOG STAR due to the name, curse you [waves fist].

i think i ended up about a tenner down all told.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Cor what fun, sorry I missed out on this chaps! Tell me more about your winnings!

BLING!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was doing appaulingly, having only one once, before the last race, where I made my losses slightly less by getting £7.50 back on £1 to win, but I can't remember the dog's name for the life of me!

I fear I was rather drunk, despite only having 1 whisky at the stadium itself. And it was SO cold...

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i only 'won' when i picked a dog and didn't put any money down. except the one bet when i gave money to stevem to bet for me and the lady stole my pound, so i had to share my winnings with mark.

and yes, matt, you did kiss mark. it was a heart-warming moment.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt had better watch out - that SGS is a hardass when it comes to her man. I think she fights with knives.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Vicky, you won on Lexington Avenue

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Good night all round. Had grebt fun despite winning bugger all, rediscovered the joy of plastic hot dogs and found out that my transformation from Daniel Bedingfield to Jack Black is finally complete.

Ankle swelling almost gone now.

robster (robster), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

there is pictorial evidence of the Jack black phenomenon

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have ph34r

robster (robster), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there pictorial evidence of the Stevem Kraftwerk phenomenon?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god yes, and evidence that the world may well revolve around Mark S!!

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

£3.40 is the most I won, on Toosey something...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

''and yes, matt, you did kiss mark. it was a heart-warming moment.''

so you ppl had 'fun' ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, organised fun.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe the woman stole our winnings! Though I'm sure she'd get in all sorts of trouble if she had - maybe it wasn't her at all. Which means the only person who could have half-inched it was... stevem...

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Was he left behind, or was it a rouse?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have just had a strange flashback and seem to remember singing Milkshake in a Pitman style voice on Saturday, I am aph34red.

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yes chris, you did this for about TEN MINUTES

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, sorry

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Vicky enjoyed it

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Milkshake? What about giving the other passengers on the 357 a rousing chorus of Atmosphere as covered by the Tindersticks?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh crap, I was a little tipsy.

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't remember ANY of this. In fact, the only thing I remember from that bus ride is phoning Stevem up the second he missed the bus and going "ha ha".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

chris' singing was *on the way* to the dogs, not on the way back...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, it might have something to do with the fact that pitman style was at the focus group, and atmosphere was on the way to the dogs, not on the way home.

Chris and I walked home, which didn't take too long, but we got a bit mesmerised walking over the north circular, underneath the big roundabout.

x-post

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, Mark somehow omitted the kissing from his narration of the evening's events.
I have been known to use knives.

Really though I am sorry I missed this, I was feeling cheap and had also just spent the afternoon visiting a friend in hospital, and the journey there alone kind of wore me out. Bah, I will have to go to these dogs which are gray and fast sometime and lose my money too.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to correct Matt in that I didn't miss the bus, rather it got too full to let anyone else on. The Nelson thing was quite funny tho I must admit.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, though it spoils the story slightly you should know that Matt only kissed the top of my hood.

Stevem, you TOTALLY missed the bus as we were watching you as you walked vainly towards it.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i would've so got on that bus if there had been any room left

as you all trundled off into the distance i realised the only thing left that was real were my tears

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

kissed the top of my hood

A euphemism?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, beat me to it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that matt is fast

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

can i just point out it is imperative that Colette record and release a cover of 'Baby Got Back' ASAP thanks

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i *meant* that madchen beat me to the "ooer missus", not that matt beat me to barry's hood...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean that NOW Steve!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Beat Carsmile NOW!

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"oh beat me" etc...

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

When did Tim become a slave to the lens?

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume I was still thinking about I Love Horses.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the pics of sinkah looking miserable are in fact ADORABLE.

but pic 71 is great: it looks like Tim's abt to explode at steve m (if it was him that took the pic).

nope, I took it. I think there are expletives coming out of his mouth.

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
OK, so I'm going to the dogs this Saturday! That's August 21st, 2004 people. I never did make it to the above festivities...

My friends Trish and Bevan (who you London bowlers have met) live in the 'stow, and are even hosting a BBQ prior to heading off to the track. All are welcome!

I'm told there is a special offer: £14.50 which includes
entrance into the main enclosure with race card, 2 £1 totes, your choice of chicken or scampi and chips and two drinks. But this must be booked in advance. I may do this.
http://www.wsgreyhound.co.uk/

I'm so excited about seeing the little horses!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

whereabouts in teh Stow are they Rob?

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can barely remember *anything* that happened at the actual dog track. Cursed Focus Group/all day drinking.

Aah, happy times.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Not too far from the Stow tube - along Hoe Road...

If anyone is interested in the BBQ, holla here and I can warn Trish (I may try and get her to post too - although there is the risk that ILX will ruin her work productivity like it has for so many of us...)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That's spitting distance from Casa el Porkpie, I think.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it is indeed, but I'm fishing the next day so a night on the lash isn't really on the cards.

Hoe street though

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Street, yes.
Well, feel free to pop by during the BBQ, if the fear of ruin at the track puts you off the evening's festivities.

(where do you go fishing? i want to go!)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

at a lake in Waltham Abbey, it's nice there, and so bleeding relaxing

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Just so you hear it from the horse's mouth you are all welcome to come by on Saturday and partake in the dog track or not. And yes it is Hoe Street, no pun intended (though my other friends find this amusing). Anyone wanting other details should email myself or Mr Bolton. Cheers

Tricia Smith, Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, trish, forgot to reply to the email and say that i'll probably come to your place, and might bring some of the gang that you met at glasto...woo!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at at Walthamstow last Saturday night - The Dogs is (are?) truly a great thing!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hoe Street comes from a Saxon word meaning 'ridge'. From Upper Walthamstow you can see the slope tip down into the Lea Valley.

Ha ha, I'm dull.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't look like I'll be able to make this weekend, but thanks for the invite anyway.

Oh, hello Trish, btw. We argued about football at Glastonbury quite a bit, I think. I might have been a little vociferous from what I remember ;)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray! Euro-Trish makes an appearance!

OK - BBQ, Dog-races. Yee-ha! Trish what time should I (or others) think of coming over?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Saturday, 21 August 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

so is the "popular enclosure" bit rubbish or something? why is it so much cheaper???

thinking about going soon.
