Does this bother anyone but me?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yep.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

why?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

irritating.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

again I ask why? I'm not particularly defending her but why have you singled her out above all others.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

bazza to thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

oh christ EVERYONE here is a one trick pony. lets not pick on aja.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

donut- barry!!! or mark C.

but anyway, a good thing about Aja is that she doesn't seem to mind all of this bullshit and keeps posting whatever.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

thread hijacking

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm more suspicious about whether Aja is really Aja or just someone with a little too much time on his/her/its hands to play a character.

then again, no one is getting hurt, so fuck off i shall.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

See the 77 Sunset strip thread for an example. And anyway, it got really creepy for awhile. Innuendo, strange post, etc. That all fine but, for Heaven's sake she like 14. It was like being caught up in a weird film plot. How could we know that Dante is a kid, too?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

huh?

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"that is all fine...she's"
Sorry

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Check the moderation request fot the Dante/Aja thread.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

di i hope you dont think im a one trick pony

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Sunday, 25 January 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

she like 14
12 almost 13

worldz ago, Sunday, 25 January 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Speedy you should chill out!! Starting a whole thread about how irritating someone is makes you TWICE as irritating - fact! Also, picking on a 12 yr old - that's low. Yes of course Aja could be a three-headed Monchi-chi from Zanzibar but so could all of us. Do not descend into that hall of mirrors. And chill the fuck out!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 25 January 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(That sounded shrill didn't it. Sorry. I should take my own advice!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 25 January 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but anyway, a good thing about Aja is that she doesn't seem to mind all of this bullshit and keeps posting whatever.

See, when Calum does this, it's a bad thing.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all just a popularity contest

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't actually mind whether calum posts or not.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can't understand that, you're stupid!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You read what I wrote!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Aja. Hi Aja!

F*** you Speedy (sanitized for Aja).

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Aja.

How so?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

DEAR GOD NOHello Aja!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. Aja is cooler than all of you/us.

omg, Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, thanks!

How'd you come up with that though?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Just by looking at the respones of *certain people* to you on this and the other Aja thread.

omg, Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you mean?

Terrier, Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Shut up!!!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

why?

Terrier (Stringent), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it seems like you've got nothing better to do than to make fun of me.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my first and will be my only post about this subject.

This is an open forum so far as I can see. Any googler can find it and anyone who finds it can chime in. It is moderated, so malicious mischief can be kept to a minimum (thank goodness - and the moderators). That leaves us all free to indulge in harmless mischief.

Aja's contributions, such as they are, are rarely of much value to anyone but Aja. Adolescents are like that. But her posts are usually quite harmless. The only exception that comes to mind is when Aja deliberately posted huge graphics to certain hreads in an attempt to stifle other people from posting to them - because they said some things she didn't like. Adolescents are like that, too.

Most of the time she is like a novice at a football match who is constantly asking why are those men running around like that and why did that man blow that whistle? That can be irritating after a short while. But no one is under any obligation to patiently answer all her tedious questions. Even the most patient of us will eventually run out of patience for that task.

My advice is to let her hang out. If she says five dozen silly things or asks five dozen pathetic questions, treat it like so much water off a duck's back. Adolescent children shall always be with us. It is best to learn how to live with them in the same room, virtual or otherwise. There's no need to be mean to her. That's unbecoming in a grown person.

Aimless, Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you!

I'm not a novice to football though. I know you didn't mean it that way though. I like to throw a football every once in a while. And I can though one. I can throw a spiral. I just can't throw more than 10-12 yards. That's all.

AND DO NOT SAY "WHAT?"

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

hi aja!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah ok.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

really, it's good to see you here again!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure...

It's also nice to have you all make fun of me again.

And Alex keeps asking me to break my Nirvan a cds.

It's just so great to be back.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not making fun of you right now?!?

hey, yer birthday is coming up right?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

we'll have a birthday thread for you on that day!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer, Aimless, and others fully OTM, I gotta say

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Who will start it?

You know what day it is?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

aja is welcome here any time she wants to post.

it's valentine's day, yes?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

All right, I think you deserve another chance, Aja. (I really mean that!)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

how's school? are the nuns teaching you anything good?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

School's alright. Got to do a Social Studies Project for the nun.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

social studies was my FAVORITE subject!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Math is mine

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

hi aja, you're alright by me!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

maths is good but it only gets really interesting once you apply it to physics and engineering.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like science

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Comedy gold.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What is?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

aja = the future of american science.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

uber meta

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Math is always always always my favorite class. It's its own little idiosyncratic world, just like music.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i only like math when it's practical, like accounting or statistics. i'm a total Geirist when it comes to math.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate science though. (Except for biology, in which I had a totally kickass teacher.)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Math is easy. Too easy. For me, I guess.

I'm one of three people who understand math in my class. It's me, this other girl, and the teacher.

I like biology too.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

is meta ilx the integral or differential of ilx?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that's great! i didn't like math very much when i was in grade school.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yet somehow, i managed to get a B+ in Calculus in college.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

my calculus teacher lent me his copy of fear and loathing in las vegas and spent entire lessons raving about bob dylan and showing us carl sagan videos. that is why maths rules.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't you like math?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja = the fat kid from Bad Santa
Bad Santa = ILX, obv.

sym (shmuel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What is that supposed to mean?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i resent being compared to Billy Bob Thornton, sym. i resent it to the point of contemplating getting a nailgun.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

If only you had one

sym (shmuel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

which reminds me, do you like kraftwerk aja?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know who that is.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

start downloading

start with taschenrenner

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe yer mom has a couple of their records? if so, you should ask her to listen to one of them.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

why not it's good

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not dirty or anything! do you like techno or electronic music at all?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom won't let me download that.

I don't think she has any of their stuff. I did however find a Naked Raygun album in her collection. That surprised me. I don't know why though.

I don't like electronic music

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

are you learning any foreign languages in school yet? if you are, and yer taking german, kraftwerk can be a great study-aid!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja could be a three-headed Monchi-chi from Zanzibar but so could all of us.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had this thought.

Amalin, Monday, 26 January 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i like aja.
i also think aja is a 45 year old man-perv.
but i like her anyway

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i like aja, too (for real). and i think that she really is what she says she is.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's tragic aja's mom won't let her download the eletronic music. it's a form of abuse.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I read it as "Aja is black" ... oh, the ramifications!

Aaron A., Monday, 26 January 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"ram"

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja = the fat kid from Bad Santa

I had the very same thought when I saw it. (Solely due to her inquisitive nature.)

bnw (bnw), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I watched it when all the batshit Aja threads were going on and it seemed appropriate. But y'know, I love the fat kid from Bad Santa.

sym (shmuel), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

is that the one aja reminds you of (i've not seen the movie)¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbit OTM, last two posts

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 26 January 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

what?
why?
when?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, that's so sweet! aja and matt dc have the same birthday.

so that means either that they're the same person, or they are destined to be together forever.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

If math is too easy for you, then try and do more, that way it's called maths and is far better.

chris (chris), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

argh META!! (bangs head against table)
(yes, inherent contradiction etc etc)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

whats that?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

*yawn*
why?

PinkAja (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted. I admit it. Aja was me all along.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

*shakes head*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted. I admit it. Aja was me all along.

Liar!

I'm home at this time because the teachers are having some meetting.

I have no idea as to why it is at this time though.

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i personally think that aja is one of the more refreshing posters on this board. we don't really have any other adolescents that post here, which is silly, because adolescents have just as much of a right to love music and discuss it as anyone else. i so wish she could get into electronic music more though, just because i've never heard a 12 year old killing-joke fan's opinion on kraftwerk. she's got a lot more to offer this board than lots of other posts (including me). so lay off.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

huh?

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks!

But I really just find nothing I like in electronic music. The closest thing I guess I like to electronic music is New Wave. I only like that a little bit too. I don't like synthesisers all that much. Jaz is probably the only keyboard player I actually don't mind hearing play keyboard ; Killing Joke probably is the only band with songs that feature a keyboard in them I like.

AND STOP POSTING THOSE "WHAT?" AND "HUH?" POST!!!

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Who?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

All of you!

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Do I have to explain?

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

what?

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

wut happened to the only one word thread?

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that wuz awesome

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja, don't listen to any of the hurtful crap people have been posting here. I, for one, think you're refreshing and wonderful as well and, unlike others upon seeing her pic, I'd happily pork the living piss out your Mom!

2 Pretty 4 Porn (DarrenK), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

what pic?

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

He's like the Geoff of Canada! (that's a good thing ;) )

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(but straight...er , I think)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja, don't listen to any of the hurtful crap people have been posting here.

It's not really all that hurtful to me. It just seems hypocritical. I mean come on! If you don't want me to post those posts, why do you do it?

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

fine

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ignore me

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, i like Aja too. i will stop posting anything that seems like i'm making fun of her.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you!

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

will you post here on your birthday?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja is her own person and can speak for and defend herself, but I think this is a very mean-spirited and elitist thread, and I think some people here should be ashamed of themselves.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Alex! This is mean spiritted, and even though I am a girl, and I'm guessing I'm at that age, I'm not going to cry about it.

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll post on my birthday.

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

we don't really have any other adolescents that post here

*cough*

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 26 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well, if anything i've said now or in the past was hurtful i am sorry. i was only having fun and didn't intend to be mean to aja.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll post on my birthday.

:-)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i post!!!

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Aja, don't listen to those fools. Math stinks and it is useless, I failed it twice in school and had to do lousy summer school but I STILL got one of the 10 best math SAT scores in my school which shows how lame of a skill it is. Do art instead, art rox. But if you have to do math the only way to make it fun is to download KRAFTWERK and listen to robots singing "I am the operator with my pocket calculator" while you do it.

sucka (sucka), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Aja, too. I think she is a intelligent and insightful young person, but when people post pictures of mushrooms shaped like penises as answers to an adults post, its maybe disgusting or at best funny, but when a 12 year old is involved, then it is sick and maybe illegal. I didn't say that I don't like Aja. I apologize, Aja. What I said was thoughtless and I should keep my mouth shut more often.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm good at art too! I was the only person in my class who could draw a self-portrait of them-sleves that actually looked like them. One girl ran up to me and said, "It looks like you."

I said, "Yeah, well it's supposed to."

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like C-Man best of all.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 26 January 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Be nice to "Aja." She's far, far behind us being on here so young while still so impressionable. I've got $100 on future stripper? Any takers?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?

BECAUSE!!!!!!

For what it's worth, Aja, Big Black shamelssly rip off Killing Joke. You might like them for that reason.

Ahem! Alex! I'm guessing you forgot! That is the same reason I like Nirvana less than before.

-- Aja (AsiaKitty200...), January 26th, 2004 11:54 PM. (later)

You might want to think that yourself before posting irrelevant pics anywhere...

For what it's worth though, this whole "we posted "what?" ha ha we're taking the piss out of Aja" schtick is getting a little tiring from everyone. When Aja does it, it does seem to be when things aren't terribly well explained. It may be a teensy bit wearing after a while, but it's not without reason as far as I can see. And it's not like others don't misconstrue ILX as being a messaging service at times as well.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That is the same reason I like Nirvana less than before.

There are countless reasons not to like Nirvana, Aja. I'm not suggesting that you'll fall in love with Big Black, but you might enjoy them. Moreover, I doubt Steve Albini would deny the appropriation. Listen to, say, "L Dopa" off Songs About Fucking and tell me what KJ song it reminds you of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, how did Big Black rip off Killing Joke? I wasn't aware of that.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to them, Stence, just listen to them, Then listen to Killing Joke's first record. Then get back to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to, say, "L Dopa" off Songs About Fucking

Sure, ok. I know my mom has that album. I'm not sure if it's on cd or tape though.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

which song is "L Dopa" a rip-off of? I'm definitely more than familiar with Big Black and Killing Joke's records, and I'm not trying to take the piss. I honestly want to know which song you're talking about.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see if Aja can pick it out first.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There are countless reasons not to like Nirvana, Aja.

I know, but that is one of the two main reasons I like them less than before.

I want to see if Aja can pick it out first.

I'll get on it later tonight.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, if you said "Big Black shamelessly rip off Metal Urbain," that's a little more obvious.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've stopped that. Show me an irrelevent pic I've posted since I came back.

OK, but you haven't been back that long. And I don't read every thread ever. If you've learned that it annoys people and have stopped doing it, then people have even less reason to take the piss. I'm on your side!

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, Stence, basically it's a flimsy re-working of "The Wait".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey hstencil. Haven't heard from you in a while.

Alisa, do you remember when I used to post that huge Bleach pic?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, Stence, basically it's a flimsy re-working of "The Wait".

Oh come on! You spoiled it. Now I won't listen to it.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you really think "L Dopa" sounds like "The Wait?" I don't remember them sounding alike at all, but I'll try to dig 'em out to hear the similarity.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

If anything, Big Black may approach the sounds on "What's THIS For..", which was pretty pounding, militaristic sounding record all around (and my fave Joke record), more specificly, the song "Madness". And maybe some of the distorted guitar sounds and vocals have some similarity to some songs on the first Joke record, but I can't map a direct Big-Black-song-is-a-rip-off-of-Killing-Joke's-.... type analogy. If there is one similarity musically, the vocal difference destroys it, and vice versa, off the top of my head. In brief, the Killing Joke/Big Black rip-off accusation is quite a stretch, me thinks.

You can name several influences on Albini's guitar sound though (The Fall, Wire, et al) and general rhythmic structure of his tunes (early DAF, for one)

blah blah blah

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Wait"? But Jaz's voice doesn't sound abrasive at all during the chorus, whereas Albini's voice sounds pretty abrasive all the time in Big Black songs. And the only similarity there is the guitar distortion and tone.. maybe.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(disclaimer: I haven't heard "L Dopa" in a while, so maybe there are some chord progression similarities too.. then again, most hard metallic (term used loosely) songs with a small number of chords sound pretty similar..)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, well if I remember correctly, the rhythmic structure of "L Dopa" isn't anything like any of the songs on Killing Joke's first two LPs (or much else, really). Too many stop/starts, with spoken/shouted interludes (eg. "L Dopa fix me, all right!") in a style I can't imagine Jaz ever doing. Plus, y'know, having a drum machine instead of an actual drummer, no other synths, etc.

Another really singular influence, esp. on the guitar sound, is Gang of Four. I mean, the intro to "Anthrax" basically = the intro to "Cables."

I think Steve would definitely acknowledge his debt to Metal Urbain, though.

Anyway, yeah, um, back to the topic at hand!

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's ok hstencil. I like Killing Joke, remember.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks!

Aja, do you listen to any nice music? The Shins, say, or Belle and Sebastian? Much better than Killing Joke.

Well, I don't know. It depends on how you would define "nice music." My mom has a couple of the Shins' albums. I like them I guess. Not enough to be a big fan and buy every single one of their albums though.

There is no way that a "nice music" making band could be better than Killing Joke!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

why is it that "nice music" always = "twee music"? not that i DISLIKE said nice/twee music, mind you.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 29 January 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. Jaz is too big to be twee.

Buzzcocks
Jets to Brazil

This is not to say I do not like some KJ though I consider them mostly a joke with no killing potential after the deindustrialization of their sound.

back aft, Thursday, 29 January 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You miss the point of their moniker.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You miss the point of their moniker
Bands trying to make points with their names come off a bit silly, don't ya think?

back aft, Thursday, 29 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Their not necessarily trying to make a point with their name....it's merely a figure of speech suggesting the ultimate irony. They themselves aren't doing any the "killing," you literalist.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops, They're.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

So. The Ultimate Irony is Killing Joke's name. I guess we can all go home then.

You can. Bye.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No no! Maybe you think so, but I don't. I like the Buzzcocks, but Killing Joke is better in my book.

And I don't understand the meaning of "Killing Joke." Could someone please explain it to me?

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you mean? How I found out about them or who gave me my first listen?

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Your first chance to listen to them.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you can kind of give credit to my mom for that. You see, I got sick one school day and I stayed home. My mom totally allowed that. She thinks I don't take enough days off. That gave me a chance to listen to this program on the radio they do while I'm at school. All they do is play some old songs they don't play anymore. That day the host said, "After the break I'll play a Killing Joke track but first I got to..." Then I got excited and waited.

They played "Eighties." My mom immediately said, "They have better songs than that. That was just their big hit."

And that's how it happened.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you have too much time off from school. It's pretty expensive, you know!

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. I've taken more time off this year than in past years.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

When are you going to start listening to jazz?

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably a trend. Since you've gotten more into music and less into THE SIMPSONS, KING OF THE HILL and WALLACE AND GROMMIT there has been less of a tendency to flip out when missing a class or two. Though I believe time away from the grind is good for the soul, it should not become a habit.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's alright.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

When are you going to start listening to jazz?
likes: Art Pepper; Miles Davis; Ornette Coleman; Dixie land, very much

...

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What does that mean?

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I just see you listening to jazz when you go through your teenage rebellion phase, is all.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No way.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You may be surprised at what turns your musical taste will go through and leave behind.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, you won't always want to listen to what your mother tells you is good.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it won't be so drastic that I start listening to jazz.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. I don't think I'll ever enjoy listening to that stuff either.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Then why did you think I would?

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You're young and foolish.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Some jazz is actually quite good, but don't buy any of that "some day you'll grow out of this and that and embrace and enjoy that and this!" crap. Like what you like. Reject what you don't, and feel fine about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Alex. I was already planning on doing that though.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have my whole musical taste flowchart worked out already.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

50s rock > Blues > Jazz > Classical > Music Box Dancer > Death.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoy a lot of "uncool" stuff like Egyptian pop and bellydance music as well as a lot of Asian Pop.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What I like is uncool with my friends.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but what they think is "cool" is invariably crap, so don't let it bother ya.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when Sonny Lester's How To Belly Dance For Your Husband used to be an essential album for me. I also remember my j-pop phase. Man, those were the days.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Alex. You're probably right. But it bothers me how "srtange" they find me because of this.

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

there's always the possibility that YOU may influence your friends' and classmates' tastes in music too, Aja.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Highschool will probably change things quite a bit for you.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Whenever that comes.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Whether or not your friends condone your particular taste is ultimately unimportant. Remember that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that's true, alex. but it is always nice to get some approval, and to think that you may have improved their tastes.

still, yer right and aja it's good advice to follow ... know what you like, and don't feel pressured to like something that you really don't like.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, never smoke cigarettes.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What I like is uncool with my friends. they just like what's on crap San Francisco FM radio, MTv and Tiger Beat. None of them seem to have a conduit to "cool" music like you. I am sure none of their parents have spent time with them at Amoeba or Rasputin's looking for stuff like Japanese only CD releases of Foo Fighters and Rammstein.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

True. Cigarettes are bad.

xpost

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not influencing any one. They're just like "She listens to that. She's weird, but she's still my friend. I'll tease her. She'll yell at me. Tell me my music stinks. We'll argue, make up and stay friends." Not once do they think "I wonder what that music's like? I'll ask her about some other bands she likes and see if she'll recomend any to me to listen to."

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though they're totally cool. (x-post)

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You need to find something you can both like. Outkast, for instance.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

well, give it some time ... you may be surprised when you grow up, how much influence you can have. you'll have to trust me on this one.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate OutKast!

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

. I also remember my j-pop phase I remember a couple of months ago when Pierrot were staying at a hotel near where I am at... boy, I have never seen so many screaming girls in my life... and for a band so un-good!

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not influencing any one
I thought you said that Luis liked Rammstein when you had him listen to them.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of my best friends today have completely polar tastes to mine (and not just in music, but likewise in fashion, literature, politics, sexual preference, etc.) That doesn't mean you can't still be friends.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Moreover, these friends of yours may turn a corner one day, wake up and smell the coffee and think: "gee, Aja has really interesting, adventurous tastes and is so much more clued-in than I am!" They may not, of course, but there's always that possibility. I loved it when friends of mine who'd previously written my musical tastes off as freakish and anti-social later came `round to appreciating some of it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you said that Luis liked Rammstein when you had him listen to them.

That was Joshua.

Gee, Alex. People thought you were anti social?

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of my best friends today have completely polar tastes to mine (and not just in music, but likewise in fashion, literature, politics, sexual preference, etc.) That doesn't mean you can't still be friends.
I second that... in fact, most of my friends don't even know what I listen to since I hardly ever talk about music to anyone. And I usually only listen to music through my walkman MD on trains.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That was Joshua
I don't think I know him. I wouldn't worry too about the musical tastes of anyone at your school. The general rule is that these kids are wrapped up in overeating, not exercising and being Weisenheimers and not concentrating on the important things in life like listening to WARDANCE at maximum volume through your earbuds on the BART.

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

too much valium?

Roman (Roman), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I have that in my right ear. Keeps me up at night sometimes and Q-tips only seem to make it worse.

may pang (maypang), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

really? i didn't know benzos gave you tinnitus. i thought it was standing too close to the PA when the Ramones played the Palladium in 1982.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. Actually, benzodiazepine had nothing to do with me developing tinnitus (I just like the gif), but earbud headphones certainly did.
