I am addicted to coca cola

Cigarette addiction has almost been overcome, but I can't stop drinking coke. It calms me greatly but it's sort of an expensive and tooth hurting habit though.

I have to have it in a glass otherwise it's not quite satisfactory, I just had a can but realise it wasn't enough, I need more. MORE COKE.

Do you drink coke?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a problem with both coke and diet coke. i fear for the state of my unborn children.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, at least you're still on the good stuff. What till you're sucking the 7-11 clerk's clock just for a can of Fizzo-Cola. That's when you're addicted.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Cigarette addiction has almost been overcome, but I can't stop drinking coke

Haha! I know some one who smokes and drinks coke all the time. When he visited my mom and me, he put out his cigarettes in the coke cans. I didn't know he did this and yelled at my mom, "Why aren't you recycling these?" Then I could smell the cigarette in there and shoke the can and asked my mom, "Is there a cigarette in there?" Then she told me he always puts out his cigarettes in the coke cans.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I can stop any time I want.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I want one of those concentrate coke machines in my house, the cafe/mcdonalds syrupy coke type ones.

I used to LOVE a cigarette and a coke, god it was like the breakfast of champions. I would like if Coke made a cold flat morning juice type cola too.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes the fizziness annoys me.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

2-3 cans a day man but i'm trying to ween off. i like it out of the can - you get that all important aluminium essence, saves washing up too. haven't had a Vanilla one for a LONG time now but love it with lemon. refuse to drink it when it's flat - which is why i don't buy 2 litre bottles. cans are 29p at my local 24 hour store anyway - god bless the Green Lanes.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i have been trying to space out my coke consumption lately.
i try not to have more than a can every 2 days.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like if Coke made a cold flat morning juice type cola
too.

Shake the bottle, open slowly to avoid overfizzation, and leave uncapped in fridge overnight.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you done this? I look forward to it.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to drink a lot, but then I found out I had crohn's disease and maaaaan, you don't really want to know what that stuff does to a crohn's stomach...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If I have a hangover, I can drink like a whole 2 litre bottle of flat cola. This is great as, if I am drinking in the house, black Russians = inebriation = inability to screw the lid back on = flat coke in preparation for hangover. hurrah!

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to keep a bottle of flat Ginger Ale around, because my mom always told me that flat g.a. was good for g.i. problems.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Coke's filthy sweetness always a good compliment to the variety of salty oily foods i seem to consume on a regular basis too - pepperoni pizza etc.

i am so gonna be diabetic soon :(

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly can't stand any kind of soda pop. I mean, I'll drink it, but it's not my first choice. Sometimes a nice cold coke is good for a hangover.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm freaked about turning diabetic, damn you Steve!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think with greasy pizza is the only time I drink coke (minus rum).

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

FLAT COCA-COLA IS THE MOST DISGUSTING THING IN THE OMNIVERSE FEWLS

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel tempted to repeat my coffee spasm of love for coke here

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't really want to know what that stuff does to a crohn's stomach
i'm currious.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink a ton of Coke. I love it. I much prefer it to beer with pizza, in fact I've never really understood that combination. I've had my blood sugar checked and it's just fine. I also enjoy drinking it from a glass with lots of ice though I'll drink it out of an old rubber boot if you're out of glasses.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate that the vending machine at work charges so much for them, this thread is making me want to have one right away.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes addicted to sainsbury's diet cola, special offer buy 3 - 2litre bottles for 1.50

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

worse still i've developed this weird quirk of taking my first glug from the can or glass before whispering 'mmmmmmmmmm phosphor'

also, red wine and Coke...try it sometime. all the cool TEENAGERS in Spain love it...and I think I did too.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember last summer I listened to Ulrich Schnauss on my back lawn in the sun, with a glass of coke, and had a semi-spiritual experience. It was a very happy day.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dyson, I re-state what I have said before: I have pictures!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to put booze in it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem is actually correct, EXCEPT FOR WHEN YOU HAVE A HANGOVER. Hideous sweetness and lots of liquid = excellent hangover cure. Fizziness = vomit inducing (it makes you burp. when you are ill, that is so far removed from being a good thing it's not funny). Hence flat coke = best of both worlds.

Otherwise, flat coke mings.

(x-post x loads) Red wine and coke? wtf?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I do too, but I do not drink spirits except between the hours of 0500 and sleep on long nights out.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems OTM. Soda's all syrupy and shit.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

uh....

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i knew a guy who mixed Coke with milk too - I refuse to try this, but give the Calamacho a go sometime

more 'new' facts...

1) it's great for cleaning your drains! so think what good it does to your own innards...

2) Southern folk cook ham in it

3) we are funding an evil mega-corp who in turn are fucking up our teeth and bloodsugar levels with their devious product

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

red wine and coke is the disgusting. I drank a load with some spaniards waiting for a bus in Rome.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

what are you trying to say????

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

with milk¿ cleaning drains¿ ham-coke¿ stomach pictures¿ this all too much.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

nowhere near as disgusting as flat Coke, Ed

(it makes you burp. when you are ill, that is so far removed from being a good thing it's not funny).

no this is good as hangover/ruin symptoms often involve gas and trapped air (i don't get headaches after heavy boozing, unless it's champagne, or port)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I am drinking red wine just now. how much coke should I add to how much red wine for an idea of how bad this is? (or should I wait until I get to Spain on Sunday)

(stevem - burping is one step away from vomiting when hungover. Is for me, anyway. and vomiting is never good.)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in England a few years ago, I found the coke there to be thinner, less syrupy, than in the US. Has anyone else found this?

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That seems to be the case

ailisa, about half and half

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought vomiting WAS good with regards to getting stuff out of your system. 9 times out of 10 i feel better after puking, apart from the horrific taste in your mouth...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmmm

*sips red wine and coke*

it tastes like crap sangria.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The only soda I bother with any more is the occasional diet Vanilla Coke. Drink of kings.

Although, if I do happen to have a straight-up cheeseburger, there's gotta be a straight-up Coke next to it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

dude that diet coke with lime is like mainlining heroin

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

vomiting after a night on booze is horrible. it doesn't make me feel better, it makes my head hurt and my stomach go all crampy and quite often makes bile-type-stuff come out of my nose.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

dude that diet coke with lime is like mainlining heroin

Or battery acid, which might actually be worse.

Fuck it though.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i am addicted too, ronan. i try to drink as much water as possible, but the lure of coca cola is too overwhelming at times.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

coke with chinese food, middle-eastern food, and especially with a bacon cheesburger is pretty much heaven.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I am quite a fan of water, and also dilutable orange type gunk, but coke does have quite a lure.

Dan totally otm about chinese food, though I do love a nice beer with spicy chinese food.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I love coke, too. I don't think I've had the non-diet variety in months, though. I used to love diet coke, but lately I'm a diet pepsi kinda girl.

Drinking lots of coke makes me huge. FYI.

mandee, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

what like, 50 feet tall?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixing Coke with milk isn't that far off from a rootbeer float. Just add a little bit, though.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend puts coffee creamer in rootbeer to make a poor man's rootbeer floot.

no, stevem. not 50 feet tall. manatee-sized.

mandee, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think dr pepper is better, but I only drink a can every couple of days or so.

Tea is my fave drink.

I don't understand any of you people.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Since we're talking about Coke...

The most crack-smoking theory I've heard about why Coke changed its formula in the 80s is on the Negativland Dispepsi album, in the form of (what sounds like) a call-in to a radio show.

According to the theory, the Mexican police used to shake up cans of Coke, then open them right under people's noses as an interrogation technique. The new Coke formula, having less carbonation, was developed in response to this practice, with human rights in mind.

Okaaaaaaaaay.

There was a Lynda Barry comic about the "Coke dissolves meat/teeth" thing, where an elementary school teacher wanted to demonstrate this by putting a hot dog in a Thermos full of Coke. After a few days, she dumped the contents out, and of course the hot dog fell out, completely intact, and the narrator said that it was one of the saddest things ever.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Did the hot dog confess?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hope this repellent drink hasn't become 'trendy' thanks to Spanish ruin.

Not Coke NB which I am hooked on.

Alex T successfully gave it up! So it can be done. He then successfully gave ILX up so he clearly has more willpower than the rest of us.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's normally done with the cheapest crapest wine, pound a gallon type stuff. The guy I drank it with mixed it up in a five litre bottle

You ever leave a chunk of raw meat in a glass of coke overnight? It's true. No meat in the morning. And it wasn't Santa Claus or the Rotten Tooth Fairy.
Trouble is, there's different kinds of thirst, and sometimes only Coke will hit the spot. Yes or no?

Dorien Thomas (Dorien Thomas), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't actually thought again of the Tia Maria/orange juice thing for a while. And I finished the bottle of Tia Maria at the weekend which is annoying because I quite fancy one now. Hurrah for trips to Spain for cheap booze (even if they did invent red wine and coke)

(I just typed "red wine and cock" there)

Hmmm... Very interesting the tooth/coke thing. I had a girlfriend who was addicted to the stuff. She had a theory that coke is actually really good for you, because (assuming that the myth is true) it helps you digest any meat and stuff that's sticking around in your guts. Fair enough excuse to go on drinking it, I'll say.

I once drank 4-5 sodas a day but now I've actually completely sworn off soda to the point where even on the rare occasion when I eat fast food, I always get a cup of water instead. I drink nothing but juice and water during the week, and a few beers on the weekend (or more than a few depending on the event). I still smoke, though. But no more soda for me. I haven't had a single one in 3 months.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 8 April 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh.
Not surprising to see that there are people out there who find Diet Coke with Lime disgusting. Just FYI, if you're not totally immersed in the world of diet sodas, it may taste fairly nasty to you, but to me, Diet Coke with Lime is just about the greatest thing the Coca-Cola people have created. I'm not alone in this sentiment, either; the Diet Coke with Lime always disappears the fastest from the store shelves at the supermarkets I usually go to. (This is coming from someone who was obsessed with the lemon salt "candy" powder from the age of 9 up to 12 years old. FYI.)

Another favorite -- Diet Cherry Coke. Yumyum. It delights me to know that Sonic Drive-Ins can add in their own cherry syrup to Diet Coke and create their own variation on that theme. I haven't tried it out yet, but I will. As I stated once before around here, the only regular soda I will drink is the regular Cherry Coke, and that's only about once or twice a month. That's also some good stuff.

Right now I'm guzzling some Diet Big Red. It's hard for me to describe the taste of a Big Red cola; I suppose it's sorta a cross between Coca-Cola and bubble gum. It's really, really good, IMHO.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 8 April 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I've replaced coke with water and juices around the house, but I can't get away from it eating out at lunch.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Same here. I hardly ever drink Coke at home anymore. But when I'm out, the party starts...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the king of being addicted to Coca Cola. If I don't watch myself I can go through a 24 pack or 4 liters of that shit in like 24 hours! I figured it out once that I get something like 2/3 of my calories from coke.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 8 April 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait but I should also say lately I've been getting better cause I got a Nalgene bottle just like everyone else and for some reason that helps (see cause if you just re-use any old plastic bottle they get all grody very quickly). Now I just keep that stocked w/water and I'm set.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 8 April 2004 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Near the end of documentary "the cola conquest" there was an old chinese guy looking like an alchemist that was using weird ingredients like powdered butterflies etc trying to make a bigger, better drink than coke that inspired me to drop soft-drinks and experiment on my own with ordinary ingredients. My best recipe to date doesn't have the pizazz (or carbon dioxide) to be a contender but I like it : strong green tea+ gotu kola+ anise or blackcurrant nectar.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I never drink 'diet' soft drinks. Very occasionally I'll have a Coke with some spicy cheap meal that warrants it, or in the JD/Coke mix. Once in a blue moon I'll track root beer down in Chinatown for a float.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack Daniels and coke is the preferred mix, right? While I was buying both, this guy---who you could tell had a lot of experience under his belt---took me aside and told me to go with Jim Beam instead of Jack. Jack is for drinking straight, he tells me, while Jim is a better mixer. Cheaper, too. And you know, he was right.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

stoli or above w/ coke is gold

i think its pretty

katharine (katharine), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim Beam isn't standard issue behind the bar of every pub in London, whereas JD is.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Any name-liquor and coke seems like a waste. Coke kills the flavor, it doesn't taste that wonderful anyway, and if you drink enough you're increasing your hangover chances.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But ordering "whatever plastic-bottle bourbon you've got" doesn't sound quite as classy as JD, I suppose.

"enjoy cokeness"

gabbneb, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

i've been freaking out about the possibility of diabetes, so i keep saying i'm going to quit drinking coke, but i always fail. tomorrow.

Tape Store, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

recently i had a four or five cokes in a week after not having any for four or so years (cause they were free at work) but it didn't get me back on them habitually which was nice

electricsound, Monday, 31 March 2008 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

i drink so much soda-- probably 8-10 cans a week :(

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 March 2008 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

every time i try to "quit" i get headaches

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 March 2008 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

When i was in high school I used to drink that much in a day! Then I stopped, and, mysteriously, immediately stopped getting any cavities at all.

2-3 cans a day man

-- stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:19 (3 years ago)

wtf hope that was a slight miscalculation. average is 1 a day now and has been for some time (tho often Coke replaced with Fentimans), but this is bad enough.

blueski, Monday, 31 March 2008 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan I would guess the headaches have to do with caffeine? Try quitting the cokes and having a cup of coffee instead. Two if you need it. YMMV but after about age 26, sodas just made me feel nasty and horrible and queasy, which I explained in a million different ways until I realized what it was.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 31 March 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

one of those midget cans poured over 3 cubes of ice in a glass is maybe the best drink on earth.

also 8-10 cans a week is practically nothing as far as either sugar or caffeine are concerned; 2 cups of coffee is gonna be like 10x the amount of caffeine you'd get in a can of coke.

his headaches probably have to do with some sort of wholesome goodness native to the coke his life is otherwise lacking.

deeznuts, Monday, 31 March 2008 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

i drink far too much of this shit.

stevie, Monday, 31 March 2008 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

Emma is addicted to coke. It concerns me. I can quite enjoy a glass every so often, with loads of ice and a slice of lemon it can be quite refreshing. I like it with bourbon, too. Mostly, though, I feel like it's attacking my throat and teeth and chest with vicious bubbles and sugar.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 31 March 2008 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

you guys srsly need to chill the fuck out about this shit, a can of coke a day is probably the most harmless 'vice' i can possibly think of. jesus.

if you really want to moderate intake theyre selling classic coke bottles again at exorbitant prices, or you can pick up those aforementioned midget cans moms everywhere are crazy about. (my mom is where i picked up the can-over-three-ice-cubes thing.)

deeznuts, Monday, 31 March 2008 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Coke is good. I used to like Pepsi better, but then realized, from a scientific perspective, that it is just sugary Coke. Boylan's cane cola is better. I used to drink a ton of soda when I went to school near this place Galco's Soda Pop Shop, and also when I worked at a place that had free coke.

Now it might be worse, as I have moved onto coffee.

freewheel, Monday, 31 March 2008 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

also 8-10 cans a week is practically nothing as far as either sugar or caffeine are concerned

????? i hate to be all school marmy but try visualizing the amount of sugar you're talking about here. it's the equiv of eating about two cups of white granulated sugar every week.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 31 March 2008 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

although dude yeah i would be wolfing down liters of the stuff if it didn't make me feel so horrible.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 31 March 2008 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

the real problem with coke -- and american soda in general -- is that it's made with corn syrup, not actual sugar. if you're fortunate enough to live anywhere near the mexican border you can probably find glass bottles of cane sugar coke. not that sugar is great for you, but i find that i can drink one one small bottle of "mexican" coke a day and not feel any desire at all to have more, whereas before i was drinking 2-3 glasses of soda a day.

J.D., Monday, 31 March 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i know the headaches are because of the caffeine. i'm not concerned about caffeine at all though, i just cringe at the amount of sugar i'm taking in. the problem is whenever i try to stop drinking so much soda, it's because of abstract health reasons that i'm anticipating like when im 30 or something, because right now it's not like soda is making me gain weight or making me sluggish or something, and those abstract reasons aren't much motivation

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 March 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Do you drink coke?

I think you actually snort it.

I used to put grape sugar in it. Yep, I actually ADDED sugar to it. But that was my doctor's advice. I had way too little sugar in my blood at the time. I was instantly hooked. Now I rarely if ever drink it. I can't NOW cause it's got caffeine (and I breastfeed) but even when I'm not doing any BF I rarely drink it. :-(

stevienixed, Monday, 31 March 2008 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

"every time i try to "quit" i get headaches"

every time i drink tons of caffeine, i get migraine atacks. :-( three day type attacks. you quickly learn to NOT drinkthat shit. then again i just ordered a nespresso machine.

stevienixed, Monday, 31 March 2008 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

i've pretty much been drinking at least 20 oz (591 mL) of mountain dew every day since like forever. so much sugar.

but i quit a week ago. had a headache for two days, but fine now. i'm a little sleepy at work sometimes (i don't drink coffee), but i've been pounding a lot of water.

mookieproof, Monday, 31 March 2008 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

i used to be a huge coke drinker but i was able to wean myself off of it somehow. i mostly drink water now.

gabbneb, Monday, 31 March 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

I drink a couple of cans of diet coke a day at work. Sometimes have one in the morning, which is just wrong. It's like something a ten year old would drink with their breakfast.

Bodrick III, Monday, 31 March 2008 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno. i like coke in the morning once in a while! i don't like coffee, so if i need my caffeine fix i get it that way.

I have been thinking lately about the fetishization of Mexico-imported colas of the purest cane sugars. Guys, it's a soda. A Soda. A SODA. It's just brown sugar water wither way.

This kept me awake last night! "It's just a soda..." I can understand why my family is into, say, novelty Jones sodas or Thomas Kemper's Old-Timey Pure Cane Sugar Cream Soda or Jarrito's but they are Mormon. They have no other beverages to be snotty about.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm addicted to the stuff too, alas. Probably 1 to 1.5L a day?

I have no cavities or anything (I'm 32) because I'm good about tooth brushing, BUT I'm having to have major teeth repair because all my enamel's dissolved away. And the prosthodontist said giving it up would give me big headaches, which was true.

Now I drink as much as before, but heaps more water too in an attempt to dilute all the acid in my mouth. And the diabetes thing does give me the fear.

Abbott, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently it is better for your teeth if you drink it through a straw, rather than direct out of the bottle/glass.

I had a moment of pause about coke consumption this last week after seeing a story about someone who went blind after developing diabetes from too many sugary soft drinks. But compared to him (and most of the people on this thread!) I drink a tiny amount, maybe 1 can/glass a week. Coffee is a much greater concern.

United States v. Forty Barrels and Twenty Kegs of Coca-Cola

libcrypt, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

British and Ukrainian and French and Greek Coca-Cola all taste alike. But tonight the Chinese takeaway has decided to bring me a US coke, and it tastes different - sweeter maybe.

a) why is this? why is it different?
b) why do cokes always come from overseas when you order them from the takeaway? (I have never been to Ukraine or the US )

Thomas, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

a) high fructose corn syrup.

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

which is why Mexican coke has a cult following in the US ie it doesn't use HFCS. I prefer brands like Jaritos that don't use HFCS, but some friends who I've had try it don't like it as much as typical US soft drinks cause it doesn't taste as sweet.

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

I am addicted to coca cola and high fructose corn syrup

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

it's a lot easier to get HFCS-free soda over here now - Whole Foods' generic line is cane sugar and decent enough, and there are other options. That gourmet-lookin cola up there looks awesome and should be added to my rider for the two English shows next month, somebody get on that pls

J0hn D., Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

blueski, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

The Jones soda people were handing out free cans of their cola at the last music festival I went to. Cane sugar sweetened and not bad - also seemed to have fewer calories/can than a coke, but maybe that is a HFCS - cane sugar difference?

"What is the mark? Well the mark Brian, is the barcode. The ubitiqous barcode that you'll find on every bog roll, and every packet of johnny's and every poxie-pot pie. And every [expletive-removed] barcode is divided into two parts by three markers and those three markers are always represented by the number six. Six-six-six. Now what does it say? No one shall be able to buy or sell without that mark. And now what they're planning to do in order to eradicate all credit card fraud and in order to precipitate a totally cashless society. What they're planning to do; what they've already tested on the American troops; they're going to subcutaneously laser tattoo that mark onto your right hand or onto your forehead."

I'm sure at nearly 30 I should've grown out of rotting my teeth away with pure nothing-but-calories sugar and E numbers, but I cannot stop drinking Coke and all its fizzy syrupy caffeinated relatives. I've given up a few times but there's always some excuse for just one (usually a groggy morning after not enough sleep, as I'm not a big coffee drinker) and then I'm drinking it every day again.

(And for people who don't really drink lager it's all too convenient, on its own or as a mixer, when you're out, as something you know the bar will always have, and then you keep drinking it, and then you don't sleep so well so the next morning you're loafing grumblingly around the flat and thinking "blah, what will make me feel more alive right now? man I sure could go for an ice-cold Coke", and then...)

Hmmm:

Here's the recipe, from Time via "This American Life":

Fluid extract of Coca: 3 drams USP
Citric acid: 3 ounces
Caffeine: 1 ounce
Sugar: 30 (unclear quantity)
Water: 2.5 gallons
Lime juice: 2 pints, 1 quart
Vanilla: 1 ounce
Caramel: 1.5 ounces or more for color

The secret 7X flavor (use 2 ounces of flavor to 5 gallons of syrup):
Alcohol: 8 ounces
Orange oil: 20 drops
Lemon oil: 30 drops
Nutmeg oil: 10 drops
Coriander: 5 drops
Neroli: 10 drops
Cinnamon: 10 drops

(i ask mostly because i've switched to coke zero / pepsi max in my ever-half assed attempts to get healthier.)

I give in to a peach soda craving every couple of months, and today's the day.

I drink a couple of cans of Diet Coke every day. It's my caffeine delivery system of choice during the week.
I want to try making this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCola_(drink)

I used to drink diet to get away from all the empty calories...I didn't know at the time but there's really nothing 'diet' about DC and in fact it may be worse for you than regular Coke. I dropped 10 pounds the month after I quit even though I didn't really change my diet in any other way; crazy.

There are theories that artificial sweeteners make you crave other sweet things or trigger hunger thereby making you eat more than you normally would. I'm not really sold on them though and in and of itself - DC is calorie free.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

That said I drink way too much dc and should really cut back.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

I love Coke, but I only drink it after I've exercized like a maniac for 2-6 hours, basically the only time at which it can supply your body with anything nutritious (replenishing depleted glycogen stores in this case).

I used to subscribe to the myth that mexi-coke >>> regular coke, but I really think that everything tastes better out of glass. I recently had a regular coke in a glass bottle and it tasted >>>>> than the very same coke out of can or plastic. it tasted almost* like mexican coke.

*almost! and 50%+ cheaper!

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I heard the drinking out of a glass thing is because the texture/material of the drinking utensil fux with your tastebuds and nose

pour beer from a can into a glass and you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference from the same beer from a bottle, in a blind taste test

The studies aren't clear-cut one way or the other. But after I broke my wrist several years ago I've tried to limit myself to one can of Diet Coke a day.

Bought that Brian Eno album after reading this thread. Never had heard of it before.

Good concept album: all track titles based on the secret Coke ingredients.

That's basically it...I've heard that it kind of prevents you from burning fat and that it can do other weird things to you. All I'm saying is that if you're a heavy drinker of any diet cola, try quitting for a couple weeks and see if you lose weight. I'm not really going to quit completely; I mean it's not THAT bad, but it's a good thing to try to remove from your daily routine. Lately I've been drinking the Arnold Palmers from Arizona Tea, which obviously aren't really good for you either, but they're a little better and less fattening. I guess as I get older the idea of really sugary drinks just doesn't appeal to me (surprise); I literally cannot drink an entire Mountain Dew anymore. I used to pound those things when I was 15.

three years pass...

My poison is more Diet Dr Pepper, since it's easier on my stomach in the morning.

But man, Diet Coke was my thing for years. Perfect in 20 oz containers.

Coca Cola, imo, is genuinely one of mankind's greatest inventions. The tastiest drink in the world. I don't fuck with the 2lr bottles though, quite like the 'share size' 1.5lr ones, LOVE cans, would KILL for unlimited ice cold glass bottles.

online hardman, Friday, 28 March 2014 09:13 (twelve years ago)

^ I just came here to write p much exactly that re historic achievements.

OTM cold glass. Sometimes I ask for no ice in a drink cuz I don't want to spend $2 for a glass of ice cubes, but when it comes to Coke I will never understand why anyone would want to adulterate something so perfect. It took our best and brightest a century to nail that shit, only two people have access to the vault where they hide it, and you're gonna ADD A TABLESPOON OF WATER?

Hadrian VIII, Friday, 28 March 2014 12:52 (twelve years ago)

sure, if yr gonna drink it at all you may as well go all out

markers, Friday, 28 March 2014 12:54 (twelve years ago)
