End of regular season choke award is a tie between Sacto (for managing to drop to #2) and the Bucks (who just had to win one of their last 3 games to get the 4 seed - instead they lose all 3 and face the Pistons).

Finals prediction: T-Wolves v. Pistons

But I'll be happy if anyone but the Lakers win. Call me a hata, I don't care. I hope a bus falls on their entire team (well mostly just Shaq and Kobe... and maybe Rick Fox).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

poor, poor boston. indiana is going to be looking for revenge for last year's upset, plus they're just ridiculously good. that'll probably be a sweep, unless pierce wills himself into a 50 pt game and steals one. that probably won't happen since ron "lockdown" artest will be guarding him.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i second the choke award to sacramento. they were steamrolling the league then tried to add c-webb back in, and it all went awry. yeah, it'd be ridiculous to do anything but put your -ahem- best player back in as a starter, but it sure seemed to mess up the flow they had going. webber puts up good numbers but i thought brad miller was a better all around, team-playing, game-winning player before he got injured!

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry... re: Sacto meant to say "for dropping to #4."

Boston will be very lucky to get one win in their series. Just a guess at Carlisle's game plan: "Okay Artest, you shut down Pierce and force the rest of them to make shots."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricky Davis is gonna shoot 124 times in that series. And make 28.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i want sacramento to win because peja is so cute! even though i hate chris webber. and brad miller is a beeyatch too. Detroit vs Sacramento

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I would imagine that Larry Bird has been going down to the Pacers locker room and just quietly staring at the team, not saying a word for the past month. Somehow through jedi mind training, they are getting the point that it isn't time to screw around anymore and they better play defense. An East final of Pacers and the Pistons could be the bloodiest and absolute slowest match up ever. It will make those Knicks and Heat series look like a Showtime LA vs. Bird Boston.

There is no way I could pick the T-Wolves for the finals. I will have to see them beat either LA, Sac or San An. in a playoff series to believe that they could actually go all the way. It could happen and this could be their year, but they don't have any skulls hanging around the rear view mirror like LA or the Spurs.

earlnash, Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Spurs this year, largely because I hate the Lakers. The Wolves and Kings just aren't quite there. Pistons or Pacers from the East, making for a hotly contested finals.

The big trouble with the NBA is the crappy officiating, which rewards a crappy style of basketball. The Isaiah Thomas-era "Bad Boy" Pistons started the trend, and the Riley-era Knicks put the finishing touches on it. It stinks.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love a Pacers-Pistons series for so many reasons.... And I can't see either team having any trouble making it there.

I have to admit, Mark Cuban isn't as much of a tool in blog-form.... He's actually pretty dead-on:

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I would imagine that Larry Bird has been going down to the Pacers locker room and just quietly staring at the team

Are they showering when this happens?

Wilma Spuo, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If the T-Wolves go out in the first round AGAIN, I am going to be very very very angry.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No way they lose to the nuggets

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ah memories.....Should the NBA Eastern Conference even bother?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i would enjoy seeing the lakers just beat the hell out of everyone. for karl and gary, you know.

dan (dan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Malone rolled his ankle. I think it's funny that he misses like 2 games over 60 seasons but now he's a walking IR list.

Man I'm so psyched for the playoffs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Is everyone really so sure that the Pistons will beat the Nets?

Magic City (ano ano), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate that Karl went to the Lakers just to win a championship. It can't possibly mean as much.

Why don't superstar players who are supposedly so hungry for a championship get it that if they just get paid a little less they can get some other good players on their team?

Magic City (ano ano), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

If Kidd and Martin aren't 100%, it will be a very tough series for NJ to win. But I'm not gonna write them off like some of the pundits. I'd say Pistons in 6.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i would enjoy seeing the lakers just beat the hell out of everyone. for karl and gary, you know.

well i understand the sentiment but... huh, i'm a friend of lakers-haters and lakers-haters are friends of mine, still.

(the only ones i hate on more are the effing effers who took offa my cable the only sports channel that i could sometimes watch nba live on - aaaaarrrrghhh!!)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just hoping the Knicks win a game or two. I can't see Detroit making it to the finals even though I like their style. The west is anybody's guess but I don't think it'll be the Lakers.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Why don't superstar players who are supposedly so hungry for a championship get it that if they just get paid a little less they can get some other good players on their team?"

that's exactly what malone did. he may be the first guy in the history of the nba to do it too. go lakers.

dan (dan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

He's talking about for their original team. If Malone had taken a salary cut a couple of years ago, that probably frees up 9-10 million/yr for the Jazz to build a playoff team.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 16 April 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah and it's not like malone is playing for free or donating anything to charity. plus he's a dirty player, but not as dirty as stockton was. I like GP but not enough to try to 'reward' him with an NBA title, screw that, no one individual deserves a title.

the bucks have never recovered from losing t.j. ford. they all fell down like syleena johnson re-singing a lauryn hill hook, now they must suffer against a tough-ass group of detroit pistons. but I still hope the bucks win to un-reward billups and 'sheed for fucking up my ILX fantasy team by taking the last two weeks off. AAAAAAAAARGH, etc.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 16 April 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

: )

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 16 April 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Pacers vs. Celts. Slam dunk chamion Fred Jones just blew a dunk.... and Chucky Atkins is the only thing keepin the Celtics in game 1 right now.

I really hope this series goes to at least 5 or 6.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The year I completely loose interest in basketball is the year my team actually has a shot.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No no the playoffs are excitement!!

Celtics-Pacers score could get up to 120 at the rate they're going.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, I don't think the Celtics have a single player who can grab a rebound.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh, since when are first round games best-of-7 now?

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 17 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

This year, isn't it? In exchange for vets not having to show up as early to training camp.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope chauncey billups passes the ball once or twice.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

They changed it to a best of seven last year. And hey now... Chauncey's assist numbers are way up this season under Larry Brown.

I think I watched just about every game over the weekend except for LA-Houston, which was the one to miss apparently. Sacto came alive but I'm not sure if they will keep it up. San Antonio are peaking at just the right time as usual. T-Wolves will be interesting to watch - I dunno if they make it to the finals but they shouldn't be going down in the first round at least. And the Lakers look like lame ducks - no way they make it past San Antonio, assuming they limp past Houston. They already seem ready for the summer.

Pacers-Pistons showdown is inevitable, although NJ will give the Pistons a run (should be a passing of the torch series). I really really like both the Pistons chance at getting to the finals and even winning it all. And, despite all the complaints that will come, they make defense really fun to watch. They're like the Grizzlies (10-man rotation) with more talent.

Oh, and Artest got suspended for Game 2 for leaving the bench. Dumbass.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like his job!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ron Artest, V.P. in charge of dumbassness!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

To his credit he ran on the court, realized he shouldn't have, and then ran back. The Celtics were lobbying hard for him to get suspended. I guess they win.

But, still pretty dumbassness. Especially cuz he's about to win defensive player of the year (thanks to Carlisle lobbying for him).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

by the way, blount can bite deez, bucks beat detroit in detroit in game 2, haha sukka

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I hope Cuban/Nellie are already shopping Antoine Walker around.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If the T-Wolves go out in the first round AGAIN, I am going to be very very very angry.

I will too but they are up by 16 in the 4th in game 2 right now...Honestly though...in fairness this is hardly the same team in any real respect....So many of the key players now (Spree, Sam, Olowakandi, Hoiberg, Madsen, Irv, etc...) weren't really around in past runs...They so much more tough-minded now (which I guess you can prob. attribute to Spree and Sam - Sam who I am totally in love with man he has been great this year)....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

KG game 2: TRIPLE DOUBLE! boo-yah!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Milo OTM. Walker's a curse on any team that takes him.

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hoorah! My favorite player ever is taking charge of my team!

SLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"If I can not make you mine... that would be... so... stink. Love Vlade."

OK, I think I now have a crush on Vlade Divac.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to know how the Mavs are going to work out the Daniels/Howard/Finley/Nash situation in the backcourt. Finley's got four or five more years at serious money, Nash is a free agent (and they better re-sign him), but Howard and Daniels look like they could be fan favorites for a long time.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The tough-minded Fred Hoiberg?

earlnash, Friday, 23 April 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Why oh why do the Knicks suck so bad?

mcd (mcd), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The tough-minded Fred Hoiberg?

That's Fred "The Mayor" Hoiberg! best nickname evah!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

because they're currently cobbled together from other near-playoff bubble team's castoffs and malcontents; have 8 billion power forwards and almost-power forwards playing the 1 and 3 spots; have lenny "laid back" wilkens coaching who has never really set the playoffs on fire; etc etc.

they could get really good with the right remodeling plan this summer. i think isaiah was just grabbing pieces and will figure out how to fit them together later. he did a pretty good job and might be able to flip some of those pieces into a real team next season. starbury is a great start; tim thomas might be ok if kenyon martin doesn't go to foul level 5 (on court homicide) on him before the end of the series, and penny's resurgence should be funneled into making him into a reliable, flexible bench leader.

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oops! i meant playing the small forward and center spots above. ie the entire knicks frontcourt is all power forwards.

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 23 April 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Better than the Mavericks, where they're all small-forwards. (incl. Dirk)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 23 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never seen more blatant traveling than Richard Jefferson at the end of this game. Dude was steppin' like Savion Glover out there.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 23 April 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

AHHH. C'mon, boys. make a stop for once.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 30 April 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, God, they're gonna lose by one. I can feel it. Nash and Fin have been the goats, now it's Dirk's turn.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 30 April 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 30 April 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

tayshaun prince?!?

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

he's like nu-robert horry. sleeps through the regular season. solid gold in the playoffs.

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf are the nuggets thinking trying to step to the twolves? don't they know they got spre?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

francisco elson must want his summer vacation to start now. taunting kg is not going to get him anywhere.

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

With the Kings and Mavs over, there aren't even going to be any entertaining games. Screw this 78-72 half-court crap. I want to see 119-118 games every night.

x-post - yeah, but the way he phrased it is so classic - "You touched my private parts! U R ALL GAY"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I have promised myself that I would be a good sport throughout most of the series. I say "most" because the only exception I made was if we met up with the Lakers. I would absolutely be able to cope with other series losses by my beloved Spurs, but they better not lose to the Lakers. They better not. I want the Spurs to win so badly during this matchup that I'm thinking of avoiding all local news altogether in hopes that won't jinx anything. I would be kinder about them were it not for the pustule on the flabby, cellulite-ridden, hairy ass of the nastiest aspects of humanity that is Phil Jackson. Whoops, promised not to say anything about him? Well, throw that statement out in this thread. I can handle Shaq's trash talking, I can handle Kobe's dissing of other Spurs players, but when Phil Jackson takes pretty piss-poor potshots at the city as a whole, my kid gloves get taken off.

(Heh. Yes, I always get this passionate around playoffs time.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(Q:  Am I going to regret the above post in the morning?
A:  Possibly.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Spurs are so boring. Tim Duncan has the least personality of any NBA superstar ever.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

That's your opinion, obv. No problem -- you like players with more flash, more controversy? Sure, fine, no worries. Tim Duncan does make some entertaining local commercials, though. The ones for our area supermarket chain are actually kinda classic -- "Cooking with Tim!" They're not as dumb as most local commercials, thankfully.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i love that tony parker kind of looks like he's tim's little alien cousin.

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

lakers v. spurs will feature mighty fisticuffs, methinks

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Spurs are so boring
umm...ginobili? he's pretty entertaining!

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

*laughs* Oh my God, you're right.
Poor little Tony, I will never look at him the same way again.

I'm just hopeful the Spurs will win this series again. No matter what happens in the middle, I want my (ha, "my", as if I owned the team) Spurs to come out victorious in the end. Just please block the TV and press the mute button for me whenever that snaky Phil Jackson character comes on TV, thanks.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 30 April 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'm rooting for the spurs over lakers if only so i won't have to hear any more about the lakers 'drama' and sports radio 'debates' about whether you'd want kobe on your team cuz he's such 'lockerroom poison' (yes, i think i'd want him on my team).

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 30 April 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordan has ruined the competition for the all-hair team for generations. Everyone has the same hair now. But what's the deal with so many NBA players rocking the thirteen-year-old boy moustache? Steve Francis looks powerfully sleazy. We need an all-facial hair team.

every semifinal matchup is now 2-2!

.rob (rgeary), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

least likely: the heat take two from the pacers? second least: nets evening up with pistons. i thought for sure the nets were done this year, that kenyon martin would be awesome but kidd looked like he was going to fade. i still think they may not make it (even if they slip past the pistons, i doubt they can take indiana) but they might turn into the buffalo bills of the nba's 00s.

.rob (rgeary), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

minnesota and sacramento have the only road wins in this round. bizarre 1-1 split in each home stand. two well matched teams but i can't help but think if the wolves had been to this round before, they would be up 3-1 by now...maybe even a sweep?

.rob (rgeary), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ron Artest's moustache is classic.

.rob (rgeary), Friday, 14 May 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, believe me you will see the LAST 5.4 seconds about 67 times between now and Saturday and although the whole game was amazing (Lakers dominating, Spurs crumbling, Lakers beginning to run out of gas, Spur stay close enough to gain some ground) it really is those 5.4 seconds that made it so incredible.

Unless you are Spurs fan, in which case you will wish you were somewhere else.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 14 May 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I just want to say that Ron Artest is hot hot hot.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 14 May 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That has to be the most high tension end of any game I have ever seen! Certainly the most amazing 2 seconds EVER!

It was pretty damn great. I really don't follow the sport, but tonight I was with friends from the library after they had played a UCI intramural softball game, and afterwards for drinks and dinner we chose this sorta high end sports bar place (make the beer on site, etc., part of a larger chain) nearby, since just about everyone wanted to watch the game. And man, WHAT an ending. You would have thought that the Lakers had just won the whole championship the way the place exploded after the buzzer-beater.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

God I hate the Lakers.

Those Pistons-Nets games over the weekend were crazy. I couldn't even go out Friday night cuz I was so exhausted.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

At least this will be the last year the Lakers are together. And Shaq's cap number is like $28mln for the next few years? Yikes.

KG - "I'm sitting in the house loading up the pump, I'm loading up the Uzis, I've got a couple of M-16s, couple of nines, couple of joints with some silencers on them, couple of grenades, got a missile launcher. I'm ready for war."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

he's already apologized! he should have just said "sorry, i watched scarface too many times last night and got caught up."

.rob (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ke-vin gar-nett, hand on the pump...

.rob (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm all for the lakers at the moment. i want to see them take the championship as the last of four in five seasons (and so karl and gary can get one before retirement) and then watch the team simply rip itself apart.

.rob (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

when does this freaking miami-indiana series end? 2007?

.rob (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Did KG really say that? Hahaha cuz that's brilliant.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's amazing. he just keeps rambling on and on. if he'd stopped after "couple of nines" or something it would have been ridiculous, but still in the category of regular trash talk. when he hits the missle launcher thing you can hear in his voice that he's just heard himself saying that and he kind of stumbles!

.rob (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

KG trying to do thug just doesn't work.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was borderline demented and/or Shaq-like (especially the way he was all mumbly). Wouldn't have surprised me if he'd ended the rant with KAZAAM!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel kinda bad for Miami though it'll probably make for a more exciting east final with Indiana in.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing will make the Eastern Conference terribly exciting this year.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I almost corrected myself but just waited for retribution from above for using the words "East Final" and "exciting" without "will not fucking be" between them. If Detroit makes it Ben Wallace is kinda fun to watch and you never know when Rasheed might go nuts.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

OMIGOD ROD HIGGINS NEW GM OF WARRIORS, SFANTURD'S MIKE MONTGOMERY NEW COACH!!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nothing will make the Eastern Conference terribly exciting this year."

Until the Pacers pop the Lakers bubble and send them home crying in their Escalades (and Malone in his semi). It won't be pretty.

If they can keep everything together and go out and get a decent center and another person off the bench, the Heat could make a run at a title next year. They definitely are the most improved team in the NBA. Wade is going to be an Allstar.

Mike Montgomery getting ready to join a list of college coaches that fail in the NBA. He won't be the first to do so with the Warriors. We'll have to wait and see if Montgomery will get through his job with Golden State without getting choked up about it all.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahhaha

I think, unfortunately, the Pistons-Pacers series is going to be a lot more competative than Lakers-Twolves. I can't wait actually.... the two teams geniunely hate each other, not even including all the Carlisle-Brown drama. Should be fierce!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 22 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Twolves are not acting like a top seed team.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 23 May 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pacers and Pistons are not the Nets, they will make the games slow as hell, unwatchable but potentially winnable. They both can play flat out mean and I think can get dislodge the Lakers off their game. I like the Pacers chances because I think Artest can lock down Kobe when the game is on the line.

earlnash, Sunday, 23 May 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

my radio morning show partner is a hyuuuge lakers fan, what kind of wacky bet should we make on the air?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 May 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, despite the refs best efforts with some HORRIBLE calls down the stretch, the Pistons prevail... That block by Tayshaun Prince was unbelievable. And, Rasheed Wallace right after the final buzzer quoth: "I told you motherfuckers." Pistons keep playing defense like this (19 blocks, Pacers shot 29% on their home court, all those lame whistles Reggie Miller got the only thing that kept them in it), they seriously have a shot at the title.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That shot wasn't even on the SAME page as the Peeler thing and that makes anything Aldridge says on the subject full of shit. It was no worse than what Garnett did to Peeler and Garnett got fined. Small dude set a screen and got knocked on ass. If Malone swung his elbow, I could see the hub bub, but otherwise I think it was no nastier than knee Hoiberg pulled in his chest earlier in the game.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, Malone swung his elbow at a fucking point guard, knocked him down, and got ejected. Dude deserves a one game suspension. Garnett's play was a bump...

Anyway, Malone is the dirtiest player to ever play. Witness:

i think the pistons will eventually manage to score 0 points in a quarter and still win.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember free pizza when the pistons would score 130 points when they played at the dome.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pistons/Pacers series is almost painful to watch in its offensive incompetence (its NOT just the defense folks, these teams can't hit wide open jumpers!) The East is really starting to look like the CBA in some ways.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 28 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

stern wants a bigger minor league apparently! though i'm of the train of thought that says that could actually help (ie farm darko-types down for a year, they play 35-40 minutes a night and learn how to freaking shoot).

d-fish on fire tonight!

.rob (rgeary), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

when did the league become crappy 3 pointer city, though? seriously. i would love to see a return to the days when guys who hit 20% got the ball on the perimeter, saw the open look and decided to DRIVE the hoop instead and get a better % shot and possibly a foul. leave the threes to reggie miller & voshon lenard and them.

.rob (rgeary), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the east is practically the cba though. they should use the euro style and cycle the worst team in each conference down to the minors for a year. see ya orlando!

.rob (rgeary), Friday, 28 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

no, the lakers won the championship two weeks ago in san antonio. we're back to preseason.

dan (dan), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

omigodohmigodohmigod. well, if the wolves aren't likely to advance even still, at least they're playing what could be their final home game of the season with some dazzle.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 30 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if you are an eastern conference team, having a player wear a face mask guarantees you a trip to the nba finals: discuss!

so that's it for the east- was it defense or just crummy shooting? lakers vs detroit finals...begin the crazy speculation and laker hate plz.

.rob (rgeary), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

bleh.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally missed the game, I went to bed at like six.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a real game ugly up until the 4th quarter. Then shots actually started falling, Tayshaun had a huge block on Al Harrington, and Ron Artest really blew it with that elbow to Rip's face. It was so weird that he was clocking him while staring right at the ref with an expression like, "I don't mean to be doing this." 4 point play, Pistons first lead of the night, and the momentum they needed to win.

I just really hope the Pistons can make it a competative series against the Lakers (I think they will). As much as I love this team, it's amazing that they're in the finals with the complete offensive lapses they suffer thru.... But, they actually match up well, and if they manage four almost flawless games like I've seen them put together this season, they do actually have a shot. Dunno if I'd put money on that though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see Detroit punch out the Lakers.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

While we're at it I guarantee the Pistons will also punch out any courtside Baldwins.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i was just looking up teams that had won four out of five championships--you have to go back to the sixties celtics, fifties yankees, or sixties/seventies ucla bruins.

this laker team, if they continue to play defense and share the ball, has a chance to do something very special indeed.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

when ben wallace shot and hit behind the basket was the best. doc rivers is an unbelievably great analyst. is he doing the finals?

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 7 June 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 7 June 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris McCoskey agrees

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ric Bucher agrees too.

Lakers are going down tonight.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand how a team which was supposed to sweep the Finals yet split the first two home games - eeking out a win - can have all the momentum. Wait till the wall of thundersticks and cheers hits them the next 3 games. Lakers will be lucky to head home down 3-2.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

vleeetrmx21 (Leee), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true. I think it will all depend on how much the Lakers lose by tonight. If it's more than 5, I'd say that they'll be lucky to get one game in Detroit.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, they "have all the momentum" because Detroit committed a choke for the ages on Tuesday.

But I still think they'll play well tonight.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pistons, that is.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I predict that any prediction anyone makes about the Lakers will be confounded by the Lakers.

So I am going out on a limb and going to say that Brian Cook is going to play OUT of his MIND tonite and score double digits and play smothering D on Rasheed. Also Bill Walton's tiny wife will get into a fight with Doug Christie's wife after the game. Jeannie Buss will be heard saying there is 95% chance Bill Russell will come out of retirement and play next year for the Lakers.

DEEEEETROIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BAAAAASKETBALL!!!!!!!!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

This series has been so great. My and my group of art-movie afficiando, completely non-atheletic friends have watched and loved this entire series. I think it's something about a team who looks like the junkyard gang taking on the star of Kazaam and a man accused of rape that we can relate to. The Detroit culture vs. the Hollywood culture. People who work 9 to 5, and people who have pony-tails and "do brunch." I know it's all just perceived, but that's the fun. They're the ultimate underdogs... so much that all the ads, which were probably made before the series still just show Shaq dunking and Kobe making shots. And I love it when celebrities lose.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I couldn't have said it better. To be winning this series the way they're winning, against the team they're beating, it's honestly as good as it gets.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i only wish they'd be closing it out in l.a. the fuckers booed the t-wolves at the end of game 6, as in, "give a big round of applause to kevin garnett and the minnesota timberwolves." staples center: "booo." worst city on earth.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben says he gets too much heckling on the road if he dons the 'fro. He's my hero, btw.

oops (Oops), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it when TV tries to prematurely mythologize something. ABC was all over the Kobe miracle shot in game 2, comparing it to all sorts of other great shots and series-turning moments in NBA history. As if anyone will care about that if the Pistons win on Tuesday.
Anything that kicks the major networks in the nuts and makes them squirm. I like rooting for Oakland-Houston World Series in baseball, too.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope this kills all that "Kobe is better than MJ at the same age..." talk for at least a season.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Chauncey Billups said in an interview after game three that defensive intensity of the Pacers series has helped against LA as they do not guard nearly as tight or hard as Indiana.

I still think the Pacers could have beaten this Laker team.

San Antonio's folding up after game two against the Lakers is the worse playoff choke since Sacramentals meltdown against the Lakers three years ago. Sacramentals meltdown was the absolute worse as they completely folded, blowing two leads of over twenty points in the second half in games they should have won.

earlnash, Monday, 14 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

earlnash I think the Pacers could have beaten the Lakers in the Finals if they were the Pacers of, say, April. They were pretty banged up down the stretch. But Chauncey is right on to call the Pacers series a fitting preamble for the Pistons.

Game 5 can't come soon enough.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 14 June 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It is really too bad that the Pacers couldn't afford to keep Brad Miller around, Sacramental paid out the wazoo to sign him, but he is a pest in the middle and was a perfect match for J. O'Neal.

The Pacers couldn't hit jack against Detroit, largely because the D forced them into shots they didn't want.

The thing is, I don't see Detroit or Indiana going south next year, if anything they will improve. LA is going to have to bring in the carpenters and the shrinks. If LA is smart, they will perhaps sacrifice a run next year and go young to build up the rest of their team and get some intensity and speed. I hope they rot, but that is what I think they should do.

SA needs to send more scouts to Europe and parts beyond.

I just wish Dallas could win it all playing that kind of ball, as it is the most fun to watch, but it just doesn't work in the playoffs when they don't call fouls.

earlnash, Monday, 14 June 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, being one of only twelve people that watched the Indiana/Miami series, keep an eye on the Heat. They are athletic, young and could be a very tough team next year. Dwayne Wade is going to be a star and between him and Lamar Odom they have a good inside/outside game. They need a center that can play some defense enough to match up to teams like LA or Detroit, but the rest of the team is solid.

earlnash, Monday, 14 June 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Earl, didn't the Spurs pluck Parker & Ginobli from European teams? That's not enough? Would you like them to field (floor?) 12 foreigners every game? How gauche!

And re: Dallas - it doesn't matter so much that the refs don't call fouls against the non-Mavs as much as the Mavs (not) playing deeeefense, I thought.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i predict that kobe goes 11-43 in game five and al michaels will call it a brave performance.
luke walton's face after rasheed hit the fadeaway was perfect.
i was having flashbacks to 1991 when jackson was whining about the officiating.
how great is it to see hamilton and billups blow by gary payton as if he wasn't there, play after play.
they don't play 'let's get it started' enough.

I only got to see about half of the game and then I fell asleep. When I woke up this morning I was so happy to see that the Lakers lost yet again.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i watched the game at a bar near my house, and it was mainly filled with pistons fans. there were a few lakers supporters, one of whom was an extremely drunk stockbroker-type. after a while, whenever the lakers scored he would yell, "take that, you new york hipsters!" or "show these new york hipsters what's up!"

WTF??

i think al michaels is gonna cry if the lakers lose, what a putz. when will he stop whining about the officiating?

when mehmet okur is dropping everything in sight and ben wallace hits a 10 footer you know it is the pistons night.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Detroit rioting jokes are so incredibly stupid and outdated, it's in the realm of making Lewinski jokes.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dumars really knocked it out this year, other than the whole taking darko thing. nice to see a great *team* take it. they really ought to be favored next year now, right? no one significant is old or needs to be traded- if anything, they'll probably improve!

.rob (rgeary), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope winning a championship puts all that Darko talk to rest. He's an 18-year old European, I'm sure Dumars wasn't expecting him to contribute this year. They didn't need 'Melo, and they just won a championship, so taking a project with big upside was the right thing to do.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy, do you live in fashionable Ferndale? I forget. These 9 pm EST starts go a way towards ameliorating any potential rioting...

Man, F Carmelo Anthony???!!! Are you kidding me, Rob? The Pistons just won a championship thanks to Tayshaun Prince.

Also could Al Michaels be any less excited? What a bore. Stick to football, Al.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post w/ Milo, ya got my back kid!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not kidding at all! tayshaun prince is a fantastic player and he's only been in 2 years, so he's definitely going to improve...but they could have taken melo and dealt him. i don't see why winning a championship makes taking darko better; it's still a good pick esp if darko improves by leaps the next few years and can back up the wallaces. still, why would you *not* want melo??

.rob (rgeary), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i am also biased against "projects with upside" because they pan out at an astoundingly bad rate. contrast that with players who have just won an ncaa title and i know who i would draft. still, darko could wind up the cornerstone of a dynasty!

.rob (rgeary), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony's a personality, the focus would have been on him rather than the team. He isn't as great at D, and you sure couldn't have had him sitting on the bench without a riot.

Winning a championship makes taking Darko better because they won a championship anyway. They didn't have an immediate need to fill, so they took a project with a fluke no. 2 pick. That's the right choice from a looking-to-the-future perspective.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

man I totally forgot this game was on tonight! looks like I missed some some great rebounding from my main man B. Wallace. and LB's hot wife.

10 years ago or so I would have never thought I'd be happy that the Pistons won one game, let alone the championship. But there's nobody left from the Bad Boy era apart from Dumars, and he was the one guy I liked back then.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Having watched this team devolve after the Bad Boys, get thru the Grant Hill years, and be built in Joe Dumars image... I really couldn't be prouder. That the Pistons won the championship says that there are actually things right with the world.

The amazing this was that thru the playoffs, they were actually coming more and more together. I feel like this team could keep going in another series next week. Only thing that's sad is that the season has to end.

That said, they're going to be even better next year.... Scary.

From some finals blog on nba.com:

Only in Detroit would you find Kid Rock spraying champagne on Ben Wallace while Rasheed Wallace hollered out quotes from a Will Ferrell film.

Such was the scene deep in the Palace shortly after the Pistons' Game 5, Finals-clinching victory, as the jubilation that was seen on the floor shortly after Detroit's runaway win carried over to the home team's locker room. Highlights of the postgame celebration included:

- Rasheed repeatedly yelling, "You're my boy, Blue!" a quote from the movie "Old School."

- Kid Rock answering "Oh, that was too easy" when asked what he thought of the Palace staff cutting between clips of Kid (met with wild applause) and Jack Nicholson (hearty boos) on the arena Jumbotron.

- Hank Williams Jr. calling the series "total domination."

- Elden Campbell trying to usher the media out the door, so the team could "start the party."

- Numerous players singing J-Kwon's hit "Tipsy."

- Lindsey Hunter asking the media, "Who else do we need to beat?"

- Rasheed answering "When the clock read zero" when asked when he knew he had won a title.

Simply put, it was a spirited, if not unconventional, celebration for a team that broke the mold in winning the title.

TMac traded to the Pacers for Al Harrington and either Ron Artest or Jonathan Bender? Don't see this one happening if Shaq goes to Orlando, but I would love to see McGrady playing with Artest and Jermaine O'Neal, that would be like the Justice League.

This is shaping up to be one of the most interesting off seasons in a long time.

Shaq's contract is so ridiculous.... it's seriously bigger than the entire Utah Jazz roster.

A 3 or 4 team deal involving Shaq, T-Mac, and a team or two under the salary cap wouldn't surprise me. I dunno if Shaq will end up in Orlando though, especially with McGrady still there. But totally agree that it will be an interesting off-season.

Buss is making a HUGE mistake by picking Kobe over Phil & Shaq. Lakers gonna be pretty average for a while (especially if Kobe's in jail).
