4 goals so far and counting.

I'm running between living room and spare room with computer in. But Henry seems to be giving an exemplary striking performance. two hat tricks in consecutive games. His fourth goal was a thing of beauty.

Thierry, Henry

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Thankfully, he is back in my FF team.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What does he have now, 27 goals? Unreal.

de, Friday, 16 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate him.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Got a good reason for that?

de, Friday, 16 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

His fourth goal was a thing of beauty.

So is he ...

Anna@toby's (tsg20), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You dirty rotter.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got Pires too, who's managed a goal and an assist himself. All I need is for Leeds to get one to deny points to those with Arsenal defenders. I've stopped caring about Arsenal winning now that the championship's over. Go Arse!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

va va voom, you fox

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Anna. There is alot of swearing in my house at the moment, hence why i am on the pooter!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

all the nice girls love a speedy French striker

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the heaviest defeat a team has had this season? I can't remember any big ones.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Portsmouth put five past leeds iirc

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

May oui!

We just had 'f@\king old c?nt!'

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i think portsmouth put SIX past leeds (and leicester put 4 past them!). portsmouth!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep it was 6!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Got a good reason for that?

No.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Pleat is going off on one about 'measures of greatness' on 5Live.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They seem to be ignoring the 0-0 Newcastle draw on the 5Live commentary.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah well, that's it. No more Pleat blathering about 'measures of greatness'.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Henry roxx.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

that was Graham Taylor dude

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to have weirdly double-posted in a way I don't understand.

I'm an idiot - I keep getting confused between those two on the radio.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not difficult, I'd not thought about it before, but they are both North of London Nasal aren't they?

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Leeds haven't even been that bad, it's just that Arsenal were fucking incredible.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've actually no idea where they are from, but quite a way North of London I guess.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ooooooooooh, is like Brazil here in Highbury.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You've reminded me why I'm glad I don't live in Stoke Newington anymore.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That performance was indeed beautiful. What a player!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tonite, let's all make love to Thierry Henry.

"Gilberto has the groove!"
"Yeah yeah great ASHLEY!!! Wheeyyyyy!!!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

so, do you think he'll stay at arsenal much longer?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as Wenger's there.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see why he shouldn't. Unless Arsenal just can't resist the money, I suppose.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean I belive Henry when he says he loves it there. I just love him too much, I guess.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Scenario ..a midfielder on the centre circle plays a ball through to the striker, who has space and speed to attack the defence

who is the fastest striker in the Premiership?

a: Thierry Henry
b: Lua Lua [On Loan at Portsmouth]
c: The Yak [Portsmouth]
d: Michael Owen
e: Saha
f: Bellamy
g: a.n.other

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

jermaine defoe!

adaml you hurt me with yr reply to this thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think anyone is as fast as Henry, but I don't know if anyone has tried to measure this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Woof

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the biggest crush on henry - wow, he's good.

also: wiltord should grow a full-on freeway beard.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't you forgetting Little Shaun in your nippiest Prem players poll? My dad reckons SWP's on his way to Arsenal btw, which would be a great shame but understandable.

Daniel (dancity), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

christ that was a great performance! i was open-mouthed for most of it. the first goal: he runs in between duberry and the goalie, but keeping just the right amount of room to shift his body and slot it in! it was like a work of art! i look forward to his performances in euro 2004.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately, that I cannot do.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there are probably players who are faster than henry, but no-one can run with the ball anything like as fast as he can. barry hayles always looks incredibly fast, but the ball usually bounces of his shin and rolls out of play. but prob in a 100 metres he would beat henry.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid in my darker moments I find myself hoping some Leicester City donkey breaks his leg on the last day of the season.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

he is insanely perfect, even i ruv him. Arsenal is exactly where he should remain.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

rah just caught the rerun of this game on fox sports world. off the hook. the man is a speed demon.

adam (adam), Saturday, 17 April 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

His fourth goal was a particularly fabulous finish, given that he had been tripped and was falling over when he shot.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The penalty though, he went at it full-tilt and then just gently touched it over the keeper when it looked as though all he could do was wallop it. The only other person I've seen do that is Totti.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Antonin Panenka? I think he can claim to have invented the dinked penalty. And that was to win a major tournament - Euro 76 v West Germany. He had a terrific droopy moustache, too.

Daniel (dancity), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly I was -3 then. Totti did it in a penalty shoot out during either Euro 2000 or the 2002 WC, I forget which.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Jermaine Jenas had the audacity to try one in a preseason thingy. He missed it and Robson was livid, calling him unprofessional and all manner of stuff.

Daniel (dancity), Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Jenas did that in a Champions League qualifier...

Worst thread ever, btw. Henry has just lost my my Telegraph FFL Title.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

stripping Henry of his captaincy of my FPL team due to injury fears and then watching him score 7 in 2 proves to me that while there may not be a God there is most definitely a Sod, and his Law is in full effect once again

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i luv defoe! he plays like a crackhead. i will always regret that he ws too greedy to wait for arsenal, imagine! wright-phil at arse would be cool too since ljungberg is oft injured

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 17 April 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone see that ronaldo penalty in la liga the other month where he asked the keeper what corner he wanted it in!

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 17 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Arse aren't all that. Henry's a bit good, but he's achieved that status where his rep goes so far in front of him that defenders just don't tackle him. He was shown a ridiculous amount of rerspect last night by a Leeds side who look to almost be begging for relegation to put them out of their misery.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 17 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dwight Yorke did Panenka style penalty in around 1997 for Villa.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 17 April 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Arse aren't all that. Henry's a bit good

i don't get why people need to either hype them up to ridiculous levels or criticise them to the same extreme. they won't be considered a classic team until they've won the Champions League at least once granted, but how many strikers are there out there better than Henry?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

'Arse aren't all that'

To me it's fairly obvious; they're too good for the Premiership*, not good enough for the Champions League, they're in this middling position. Ironic, therefore that they should be knocked out of the CL by a Premiership team, and who knows what would have happened if they'd got to the final. Wenger will buy a couple of players who shine in the Euros, so next year could be very special for them.

*notwithstanding last season, when they were on course to winning it; I'd blame Wenger if I were an Arse fan for not providing cover for Campbell.

de, Saturday, 17 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

To me it's fairly obvious; they're too good for the Premiership*, not good enough for the Champions League, they're in this middling position

??? what is this supposed to mean

Do you really think the Premiership is vastly inferior other European national leagues?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing he means it in the late 90s Juventus sense, they've got a style that's perfect for demolishing their own league, but comes unstuck in Europe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I totally agree with that. Arsenal's biggest problem seems to be mentally, they don't get beaten, they lose matches.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes that's it, we can see the problems Man Utd are now and have been having for a few years due this dichotomy of creating a team which does the business in either one, but not both.

NB Monaco in the Semis can capsize all discussions of this sort.

de, Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

de, Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

arsenal are good enough to win the champions league in the near future - doesn't mean they definitely will. unlike the premiership, all it takes is one mediocre performance and all your previous good work means nothing (as happened at home to chelsea)

"To me it's fairly obvious; they're too good for the Premiership*, not good enough for the Champions League, they're in this middling position"

if this is the case, how come a team (chelsea) inferior to arsenal (in the premiership) has bettered them in europe?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Man Utd just beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth

de, Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

''Arse aren't all that. Henry's a bit good, but he's achieved that status where his rep goes so far in front of him that defenders just don't tackle him.''

In what universe do you live in which arsenal 'aren't all that'. I mean, we are abt to just, you know, finish the season unbeaten.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll state what I believe about Arsenal:

- They play lovely, lovely football
- They are the only team who appear to be bigger than the rest - maybe the white socks helps, but they seem to be more longer legged, more graceful.
- They were 2 inches from losing their 4th match this season
- A more punitive punishment from the FA for the OT antics would have fucked them
- They were 3 minutes from exiting Europe in the first group stage after 4 games.
- They haven't come back from a 2 goal deficit; until they do, they are not great.
- They have only been 2-0 down once. They are a very good team to be in this position at this stage.
- Being unbeaten thus far is indeed an amazing achievement. However, it must be born in mind that this season has seen the biggest split between the top and the rest in recent years - everyone else has been really, really poor. That 4th place is being contested 30 points behind the top three by the poorest Liverpool side in years, Birmingham, Charlton and Villa and an inconsistent Newcastle with a pretty rickety defence. That's not to decry, but to say that if there was ever a year to go unbeaten, it was this.
- They have a fucking annoying army of North London cockfarmers who are almost the most irritating bunch of cunts in the world (take meejar wankery and add triumphalism + ignorance of football in any historical sense)*.
- The above fact makes me want to constantly, curmudgeonly want to prick the balloon of triumphalism that said cockfarmers come out with. See attitude to France 1998-2002.

* - As irritating - Man Utd fans indulging in same, and Chelsea fans too.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave it is all true. As much as Arsenal are clearly the best team in the Premiership, being reminded of it by the fans all the time does my head in.

Liverpool - Man U - Arsenal. Why do the fans never learn that nobody likes a triumphalist twat?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am too good for the Premiership.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have retired from international football.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

''They were 2 inches from losing their 4th match this season''

''They were 3 minutes from exiting Europe in the first group stage after 4 games.''

the thing about luck is that it usually turns against you anyway, and it seems to happen within a season, but another thing is that you do make your own luck and we have done so by being the fact VERY dominant whereas chelsea and man u kept losing matches (I will admit we have been helped by the rio ferdinand's ban but the club did fuck it up, and i take yr point abt the other clubs but you still have to execute the plans, week in week out, and that's the achievement and hard to underrate).

''They have a fucking annoying army of North London cockfarmers who are almost the most irritating bunch of cunts in the world (take meejar wankery and add triumphalism + ignorance of football in any historical sense).''

But arsenal fans do have something to celebrate! but ok I haven't met any of these ppl.

(sorry for not having memorized my league tables, I will do that now)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you're being a bit negative here, Dave. I understand the impulse, when they are overhyped by many, but this is one of the best league season performances I've ever seen, maybe the best. Going out of the Champions' League in the quarters in a close game isn't a big negative sign, and I think their points-per-game average is about the best I've ever known in England's top division - and I'm not convinced it's a particularly poor Premiership, just that the top three have pulled away from the rest. That isn't to the discredit of the top 3 - and an erratic Newcastle side, struggling for 4th maybe, are in the UEFA semi-final.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've reluctantly ruled myself out of the Chelsea job. Hopefully, that makes Claudio sleep a little easier.

x-post with Julio.

All of what you say re lady Luck and her capricious ways is true. However, the idea that one makes ones luck is absolutely metaphysical nonsense. One might get the advantages of attacking lots and thus get more penalties than average, but defensive luck is not made.

However, when positing that you makes your own luck, you must also qualify it with the caveat that luck tends to even out over a season, Brian.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

well maybe losing the champions league to chelsea and the FA cup to man u was the luck evening out, the price we paid for being in the position we are at in the league.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't make your own luck - the whole point of luck is that it is something which is not earned.

with this in mind, though, i wouldn't say arsenal have been particularly lucky this season. scoring a late goal to stay in the champions league does not equal luck, it shows tenacity more than anything (i'm not actually an arsenal fan, although i prob sound like one!)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You do make your own luck, I totally believe that. You put yourself in the right place to take chances, you have a positive outlook and it facilitates good things happening - by expecting good things and working for them they happen, and that includes 'luck'.

Saying that, I think the idea of 'good' and 'bad' luck is fucking stupid because it implies a level of median luck.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if you put yourself in the right place, and anticipate things cleverly, you have earned your success and thus it is not luck. for me anyway. luck for me, is when something good happens by complete fluke or chance. (ie if arsenal's late goal in the champion's league had been a mishit cross that deceived the goalie and looped into the net, that would be luck)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but you still have to make the cross in the first place.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew I was (sort of) right

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Liverpool - Man U - Arsenal. Why do the fans never learn that nobody likes a triumphalist twat?

Because they are too busy enjoying their pretty red shirts? Coincidence I think it not.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My cousin tells me that across Europe, there's a higher than statistical average of teams wearing red being successful. I have no idea whether it's true, but it's a great piece of tenuous pub knowledge.

Assuming it's true, I can imagine that nearly every team in the Eastern bloc wore Red, and so most leagues in half of Europe would have been won by teams playing in red nearly every eyar from 1945-90.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i think this is a woeful premiership, top 3 aside. someone told me west ham went down with 42 points last year and now everyone's jostling for champs league on 50 with 2/3 games left

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

almost as bad as the division 2 title "race"!

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the defence has played a large part this season too. Clichy is an admirable deputy for Cole and Toure has come good.

Real Madrid are the most successful team in club football history and they don't wear red

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i suppose when red teams don't win then whitish ones do, like valencia, juve, real. the only blue champs i can think of recently are lazio, blackburn?

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My cousin tells me that across Europe, there's a higher than statistical average of teams wearing red being successful.

I have heard this too. Teams fear red shirts or wotnot.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yellow: dortmund, lyon... norwich

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's supposed to be quite a small effect, kids.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Bayern and Barca both have red in their kits.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Roma, Milan.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm never normally one to miss a chance to put the boot in, but West Sham's total was the anomaly; most of the last 10 years in the Prem have seen the 3rd from bottom team around about mid 30s. Only Bolton in 98 hit 40 and still went down.

The point still holds though - the clump between teams from 18th to 4th is stunning in it's SPLness.

Everton have won the league occasionally. I think the red thing certainly holds in England. Not really valid north of the border though.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah Sunderland went down with that, 28 points? lowest ever no?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

mm, can't wait to see how norwich get on next season

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

http://monkeydyne.com/rmcs/opencomic.phtml?rowid=55275

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

red is the colour we identify quickest and react to the strongest, hence it's use on warning signs and general 'danger' imagery. no doubt this forms part of the logic in it featuring so much in kit design. but bloody Plymouth are winning Division 2 because nobody can SEE them on the pitch. it's like a Predator XI

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

West Sham is very, very lame, Dave B.

Predator XI, is however, excellent.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It is lame, but in fairness, I picked it up off West Ham fans.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

nordic and i really do agree on everything.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"It is lame, but in fairness, I picked it up off West Ham fans."

It's not even your own lame joke!

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

not to come over all Pinefox (eww nasty image that) but Boyler has spoken a hella lot of sense on this thread

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually do hope he gets quite badly injured next season, not in a career-ending way, but in a Robert Pires need-an-operation-that-will-keep-you-out-for-six-months way. And then watch Arsenal flounder.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't you rather he did it in time for Portugal?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope he returns to the form of that first season, when he was shit and i was the only one saying, no, he's really good, honest.

either that or he's scientifiacally proven gay

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! shockah huh guys? championship winning team having one player who is just a cut above everybody else.

Man U's domnination of the premiership for most of the 90s started when eric cantona came in.

And yeah, you can only beat what's in front of you. If liverpool aren't up to the job (and they haven't been for 10 years now) then tough shit.

Also: you do earn yr luck bcz you can do everything right but sooner or later things do go wrong for cartain periods in a match, the unexpected creeps in so you need a bit of luck to get through those periods.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Arsenal are IMO one broken leg from disaster as a club. They're indebted up to the eyeballs due to the planning gain Islington extracted from them; as much as Arse are a rich organisation, I feel sorry for them in that they've been forced to make good 20 years of poor infrastructure investment in the Borough. They absolutely positively must keep on being a Champeens League club in order to meet the repayment schedule. Stop me if you think you've heard this one before...

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure that Cantona comment is accurate. If anything defined that United team it was the curious lack of one pure goalscorer, Cantona seldom figured in the top scorers. That was a team with a number of stars, coming in and out of form.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also at height of Manyoo dominance they had Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham all of whom, especially in that treble-winning season, were banging in goals like they were going out of fashion.

The possible flaw in Boyler's argument is the potential of Jose Antonio Reyes to do big things next season.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess what I was getting at was in the first wave of Man U's reign, I remember it being odd how they never had a player at the top of the goalscorers table. Later on with Yorke and Coal etc they would figure but there was a long time where they weren't that kind of team, for whatever reason.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, this is true. I was being millennial in my doomsaying. Part of me sneakily hopes this might happen, as I am annoyed with Arsenal for not waiting until the redevelopment of St Pancras where they could have built a 60K stadium there, which would have been magnificent. And cheaper.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The lack of a striker challenging for top Premiership goalscorer was an interesting feature of Man Utd all through the 90s. Up till Van Nistelrooy, really.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

xposts galore.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Cantona was the final piece tho'. he got it all working together, as i recall (and I guess roy keane was the main man in the treble year, even though he didn't play in that chapions league final, which was a shame).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think that's true really, he had a big effect but it's often overstated, particularly given how badly he played towards the end of his career. He played awfully in Europe some of the years before they eventually won it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when Choccy McClair hit 20 goals in a season in the late 80s and became the first player to do that since Denis Law, which was kind of telling really.

x-post - I think Man Utd had several teams that could have won the league - the 1986 team springs to mind here - but always baulked it. I think it was less the actualy ability of Cantona as his talismanic sense of destiny that. They started to believe.

Even then, the winning of the first Premiership title broke the hoodoo and from then on, it became easier. And they wouldn't have won it without 8 minutes of injury time against Sheff Weds.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

if Liverpool haven't been anything to beat in the last ten years, why do Arsenal have a losing record against them in that time?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think, at least, you could say there was ever a point where United were relying heavily on Cantona, in the same way they rely on Ruud.

x-post with Chris (not to mention at least a couple of higher league finishes, you did say ten years)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the biggest problem with Man U in this day and age is that that they are over-reliant on Ruud Van Nistelrooy, as much as Arsenal are on Thierry Henry (although Saha has eased that a bit).

I thought Teddy was up there as top scorer just before he went back to Spurs, and Dwight Yorke in previous seasons. But I can't be sure. Is there some sort of statto site where I can check this?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

since 93/94 season

Liverpool 14 wins - 41 goals

Arsenal - 6 wins - 21 goals

8 draws

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

record against arsenal is not the record in the league.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe the white socks helps, but they seem to be more longer legged, more graceful.

Not longer legged, longer socked. I've been intrigued, nay, mildly obsessed with the way Henry wears his socks for some time. See how they're on the knee with hardly any turnover?

http://eur.news1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/xp/empics/20030917/20/1074811419.jpg

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio you don't even know the record in the league anyway, beyond the last 2 or 3 seasons!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely if they were really longer socks they'd go over his knee? And isn't the Inter player doing more or less the same?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Arsenal rely on Henry as much as Newcastle do on Shearer, tho I think Arsenal would cope better without their star man than Newcastle would, the squad is stronger. Pires seems to have come back from injury even better than he was before. If the same were to happen to Henry then it's scary thinking of what he could do. Wasn't Wenger planning to buy Alan Smith at one point? I still think he needs at least one more quality striker as cover, I mean what the hell is going on with Wiltord? Shame Kanu seems to have lost his magic somewhat.

re Man U, Cole and Yorke were absolutely deadly in the '99 season, more than Collymore/Fowler, Shearer/Sutton had been?...stats may prove this technically incorrect.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The socks over the knee issue contributed to a lower placed finish in Sky's Sexiest Premiership Footballers programme.

Won, incidentally, by Gianfranco Zola.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Henry, Bergkamp, Kanu, Wiltord, Jeffers and a few growing youngsters sounds pretty good too me. Better then the Leafs depth at centre. Sorry I'll take my hockey playing ass back over to the Stanley Cup thread.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

huh? i thought beckham won it

xpost

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Over the knee would just be silly. On the kneecap is fairly silly too - I don't know how he holds them up - elastic would cut in quite painfully. Mr Beckham started doing on the knee and I have noticed other players do it too, but Thierry was the first as I recall.

Here's a reminder of 'normal' sock height. Notice how the fanciability of the player is significantly reduces when socks are worn slightly below the knee.
http://www.mehstg.com/backpage/back12.jpg

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I was looking too closely at the socks to see the Other Thing.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he might be wearing them Kim Collins style, so it keeps the calves warm and reduces the chances of strains etc when running. Can't say for sure though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

One day, I shall stop laughing at that picture. But not yet.

Terry's socks are above the knee but stay raised - have you ever tried running with socks up? They work their way down eventually. But not Tegs. The only solution is that he wears hold ups.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

THANKYOU MADCHEN FOR RUINING MY LIFE!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, the G is lying. The actual sexiest Premiership footballers poll was as follows:

1 - Beckham
2 - Freddie Ljungberg
3 - Jamie Jamie Redknapp
4 - Paulo Di Canio
5 - Eric Cantona
6 - David Ginola
7 - Thierry Henry
8 - David James
9 - Dwight Yorke
10 - Vinnie Jones

So there's no accounting for taste. But in any case WTF IS DI CANIO DOING IN THERE?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls luv fascists. Fact.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I can understand 1, 2, 3 & 7 but that is it. I mean Vinnie Jones, wtf?!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Robson (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Only a fool would describe Di Canio as a fascist. "I wanted to understand what made Mussolini the way he was" is what he says in his autobiography. Also, "I understand that this could be misconstrued, particularly in England."

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ljungberg's popular with 'the gays'

Di Canio's a dam sight better looking than Cantona and VINNIE FUCKING JONES in my expert opinion. plus he appeared in that advert in which the woman's in the bath and he appears in his pants, boosting his chart placing significantly i expect.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, having sat through the sky thing i say the voting was mainly done on:

1. being in adverts
2. foreigness
3. going out with someone famous
4. not wearing your socks too high

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Di Canio's 'sexiest moment' was the goal against Chelsea last year. Surely the Wimbledon volley was load shootingly better?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a fool.

Hasn't he said more than that though? He's certainly right-of-centre IIRC.

x-post - Grebt volley, but I always find that kind of scissor kick a little camp. Maybe it's me.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Shevchenko's a better striker. Scored consistently in the Champions League, Serie A, and for the Ukraine too. Henry can't match that.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

i like how he marked his goal levelling ian wright's arsenal scoring record by first controlling the ball with his.. arse.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

if that's not devotion i don't know what is

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

Scored consistently in the Champions League, Serie A, and for the Ukraine too. Henry can't match that.

Henry has scored a few in the CL (but obv. Milan have done much better in it than Arsenal over the years), a LOT in the Premiership and for France in major tournaments so it's not that much of a gap between them. Will be interesting to see how they both do in Germany next year though (also RVN - too bad Eto'O won't be there).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

ronaldo anyone?

Pete W (peterw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

Ronaldo hasn't been a world class player since 1998.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

France have done a lot better than Ukraine over the years too, obv. Shevchenko's style seems completely different to Henry's. The ball seems to travel waaay faster when S. strikes it, but maybe that's an illusion - I have no facts to back it up, except the speedometer thingy they employed during matches at Milan for a bit in the nineties (and for halftime entertainment with hoofing fans). I have never seen Henry in teh flesh, more's the pity (/girl).

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

ronaldo's eight goals in 2002 world cup was eight more than henry.

Pete W (peterw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Are you going to tell me that Oleg Salenko was one of the best players of the 90s, then?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Or that Geoff Hurst had a more successful career than Jimmy Greaves?

However I think Shevchencko has a far greater all round game than Henry, and doesn't have the entire team set up to work for him, having Pirlo and Kaka as fellow stars.

Speaking as a Spur I also hope Mido has the potential to better the lot of them.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

I get the feeling that Mido is the Benni McCarthy of the 00s.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

Clearly not (although, Stoichkov was). i'm merely pointing out that to say that Ronaldo was a busted flush after 98 is to ignore some salient facts.

i guess it depends how you define 'his generation'. henry's one of the best, but i'd put shevchenko, ronaldo, zidane and rivaldo above him.

Pete W (peterw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Zidane's an interesting one, in that he's kind of the reverse of Henry (actually, Del Piero would be a more accurate opposite) because he really only becomes an A* player in big games. At Juventus, week in week out against Verona and Treviso, you'd never have put a value above £5million on him.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

Ronaldo: [me/puffs up face to look like a big fatty]

(OK, more of a big fatty.)

I prefer Henry to Shedsevenchenko.

I feel I am taking over Ken's role today.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

when shevchenko and rebrov used to play for dynamo kiev, and shevchenko was the flashier/more prominent of the two, i remember the experts always explaining how it was actually rebrov who was the better of the two

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately Rebrov seemed to need Shev to play with, as we at Lane found out. Chris Armstrong just didn't match up.

At club level at least Raul has the beating of Henry. And Figo. And he overlapped with Baggio just about who was miles better.

Finally there's Rooney, who does stuff that is truly stunning and unexpected.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

If "his generation" are those who came to the fore in the 90s and are still here then I think this is actually only one, Paulo Maldini.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

Maldini's "peak" years... 1990-2001?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

imo zidane is one of the best football players of all time. top 15 easilly. his record speaks for itself.

dom, do you live in london? if so do you know a pub that shows milan's matches?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

Lovelace - check out any italian cafe, espesh those on charlotte st, for top italian football action. great for champions league games too if you're trying to get away from little englanders.

Pete W (peterw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

schmeichel has properly retired now hasn't he? if not that obv he is the best. scored in both europe and premiership! saved a bunch of shots! won euro 92! champions league! shouted at gary neville a lot! best ever.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

charlotte street, eh? what part of london is that? is it far from kings cross? and do you know a specific pub that usually shows games? i've been in london 4 weeks soon and have not been able to see a single milan match in that time.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

it's true, Schmeichel did save a bunch of shots.

What about Makelelele?

Pete W (peterw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

lazy

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't say Schmeical compares with Maldini because there's no way he's the best keeper ever (Banks, Zoff, Yashin, Jennings) whereas Maldini walks into the all-time XI. Zidane might come close but Cruyff beats him and Ronaldinho might still do. As for Henry, he's nowhere near Pele, Maradona, Puskas, di Stefano, Muller, Eusebio or Van Basten.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

OK, is Thierry the best player in Britain right now?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I like this thread because I defended Di Canio against charges of fascism and then had my argument shot to pieces by the photo upthread.

There was a beautiful camera shot of Henry's first from behind where you can see the impact of the psin.

I've always wondered what this intangible 'he's not match-fit' nonsense meant. Surely, Henry wasn't match fit, yet looked like he's never missed a minute of football.

the best player in Britain now is Hayden Mullins. Everyone knows that.

Portsmouth signed "the new Thierry Henry" once - Diomansy Kamara - now at West Brom

Sure he could run like Henry outside the box, however unlike Henry he was often inept when it came to taking chances in front of goal.
