This Life - C/D? (now contains probable spoiler)

Should I bother watching this? I avoided it like the plague when it first came out - my contrary nature forced me to go to bed early. Now I'm a bit younger, I'm kinda interested. Any thoughts?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm a bit younger?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I was so much older then . . . geddit?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

are you that giant baby from Mork and Mindy?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This Life = classic.
Almost everything it influenced = monstrous dud.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This Life = utter and complete bollox

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked it, but the quirky camera angles used to piss me off!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

absolute tedious garbage about people i wouldn't waste spit on in real life

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

even worse than teachers

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely that's impossible Gareth!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling watching it nowadays would be too close to home for comfort though*, but for a 17 year old living with parents and about to go to university it seemd kinda cool.

*Either that or like watching a protrated whiney ILE thread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I met that guy who was in This Life and Teachers once, Andrew Lincoln? In a boozer. Seemed like a nice fellow, we talked about "Ulysses".

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What, you didn't punch him for 'teachers'?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic.

Like Teachers with man sex. Like Queer as Folk without teachers and a crap ending.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic when I was 15, still classic now.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely revolting. Same goes for 'Teachers'. *spit*

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC OTM. it seemed quite romantic at the time. but I guess when I was watching it, I hadn't yet met anyone much like any of the main characters, who in retrospect were all of course complete pricks - 'people i wouldn't waste spit on' indeed. either way, it's still great tv.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth has never seen This Life of Teachers

Adam & Joe's pastiche of This Life was best, using an egg as Egg etc.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic.

Careful viewing shows that Rachel never actually does anything wrong and Milly is the evil one.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

18 posts without a single mention of Ferdie's knob? Shame on you all.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember reading a critic saying that the show seemed to consist entirely of "dark haired scumbags"

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

As I say, never seen it, but quirky angles + dark haired scumbags = classic, surely?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Have we all forgotten the majesty that was Anna?

http://www.positivenation.co.uk/issue90/pics/artsspec1.jpg

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember everyone i knew loving it when it was first on. i *hated* it. i just thought, god, the characters are all so hateful and bitchy and unpleasant. i didn't wanna spend any time with them at *all*...

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Egg was the only one of the main housemates not to be hateful and bitchy and unpleasant (obviously he was the tragic fall-guy in the end though).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna = that woman with the sophisticated sexy Scots accent

[O/T Why did Dastoor move to Jock-Land?]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Good grief! Are we expected to like people in drama?! Bang goes half of western culture!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, but were they hateful and bitchy and unpleasant and interesting, or just hateful and bitchy and unpleasant?

And sexy scots accent = classic^classic

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The majesty of Anna? The majesty of a hatchet faced boot with an annoying middle class whine of a Scottish accent?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember the odd attempt to humanise Anna every so often. Usually failed. Her majesty was her masterful ability to go "up middle finger"
to everything that stood in her path.

Warren was OK, though he helped himself a lot in this regard by fucking off on holiday. Kira reminds me a lot of a couple girls I've worked with in the past - great on TV, not so great IRL. The ep with Egg's brother was funny - "It's OK, I'm a virgin too". Classique.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Good grief! Are we expected to like people in drama?! Bang goes half of western culture!

Point taken. But the show was like a really really awful party, full of cunts - why would i spend my time there??

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, good answer JtN

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

when was the first series? early Spring 1996?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna was by far the best of the unsympathetic characters - both Miles and Millie were kind of embodiments of every man-woman's worst prejudices about the opposite sex (him - self-centred arrogant arsehole, walking hardon, largely untrustworthy and casually mysognistic) (her - insecure, bitchy, prone to hateful jealous fits, chooses the older bloke money with the money over the nice guy following his dream).

Anna had this glorious mix of defiance coupled with the fact you thought she could completely collapse at any moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

remember Miles picking up an older woman, went back to her place - only to find hubby waiting for a 3some - sharp exit ! classic

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think my animosity towards Anna has to do with the fact that she was supposed to be sexy when she wasn't and her accent

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked it when it were on t'telly, but I'm not sure if I'd watch it again.

"What, you didn't punch him for 'teachers'?
-- Pinkpanther"

B-b-but Pinkp, the little people and the donkeys and the scary squinty eyed burd and and and...

smee (smee), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

All this and the show benefitted greatly from not returning, not even for a measly couple of Christmas specials.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. It enabled me to live a vacrious existence in trendified London whilst, er not living anywhere near London. Classic generational show (ie, I felt it spoke to me). I said in another thread that Spaced was the show me and my mates would have made had we the talent. This Life was the first aspirational lifestyle based drama I ever watched and identified with; it's what I imagine I'd have made had I been 5 years older and had talent. The whole graduates coming to terms that they are free from institutional supports and are essentially on their own now in the big wide world was really relevant.

Observation -Egg was a fucking great wet bloody lettuce. Millie was irritating, but I can imagine why she went off Egg. Miles was a grinning wally public school bozo. Anna's hearting of Miles but inability to say it was the tragedy (DYS!) as beneath the ballbusting she wanted wuv. My favourite character was Keira. And Jo as well.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

good series and only two series of it, it was ended at the right time.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps unusually, I read the book. I often wonder how they're getting on with that sandwich shop or whatever it was.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ha didn't spot this thread. v.v.fond memories of this not least because my bettah half was in series 2. Seems like yesterday..... 7 years gone!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh! Who did Mrs Dr C play?!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a 2nd series?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think my animosity towards Anna has to do with the fact that she was supposed to be sexy when she wasn't and her accent

God I thought she was hot.

I loved the humiliating fringe they gave Jack Davenport. Still makes me laugh.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not Anna, JtN! Sorry.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i can understand the Anna luv, but for me Milly was the ideal combination of sexy/stern... I realise that this is warped.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 22 April 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This Life was just like Teachers with man sex. Queer as Folk was just like This Life without teachers. Or a crap ending.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 April 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, that made sense before I wrote it.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 April 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hang on, rewind a bit here - Mrs Dr C was in This Life?! Cor. This is almost exciting as when Ed revealed he was related to Edith's mother from Allo Allo!

Who did she play, then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. anna was indeed hot. i'm not sure i'd want to watch it again, though, i fear it might disappoint me. but classic for the reasons matt and dave mention.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Right where is this anecdote told?? I have just searched and all I can find is alluded references!! MUST KNOW!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricky Gervais was their music advisor. Is nothing untouched by the hand of Gervais?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Where was the flat actually located? I'd always assumed it was in Clerkenwell or Islington or somewhere but did they ever actually mention it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Whenever I come out of Chancery Lane tube I get a little 'This Life' flashback.

I think the flat was in Southwark.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, more towards Kennington end.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Music adviser? The music on This Life IIRC consisted of nothing but Radiohead, Portishead and Massive Attack.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I understoof the flat to be Borough. I don't know where this info came from.

Anna was sexy at the time, but as I see her now, I do not think so.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Borough, yes

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
back! Back! BACK!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

can they work gina mckee into this somehow?

ten kebabs maaaaate (fandango), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

I remember watching the 1st series of this. Didn't watch it after that. I can hardly remember it. Maybe I should watch the re-runs.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

CLASSIC OBV

what with this and 'cracker' it's like tv execs have NO NEW IDEAS or something.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

Who was Mrs Dr C in the second series? We need to know.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 September 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

i liked north square more than this life.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 07:34 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't North Square set in Leeds?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 21 September 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

i thought it was set in london... north square being one of the inns?

gem (trisk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

i actually have no idea about that, please ignore me. i suspect you may be right.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

This Life brilliantly defined what it meant to be young a tosser in the nineties and captured the imagination of a whole generation of viewers.

Fixed.

Everything Is Ill-Educated (noodle vague), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

OTM. God, what a hateful program!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

u rn't supposed to like them. otoh, some of my best friends are tossers.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

I think you were meant to like them, or at least relate to them. It's not like Seinfeld where the characters are funny tossers, or a satire where the characters are repellent tossers. In This Life the characters are aspirational tossers, Hollyoaks' Big Brother and Sisters. Scum.

Everything Is Ill-Educated (noodle vague), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

you're not supposed to totally hate them. it's a straight-up drama; but you sure as hell aren't supposed to admire miles, for example.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ah well, it's just one of those programmes that brings out my kneejerk provincial-working-class-boy schtick.

Everything Is Ill-Educated (noodle vague), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

i forgot about miles. he's married to the scottish woman off the green wing so he can't be all bad.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

i mean the actor not the character.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

i hated it at the time, but i dunno, if your friends are well-salaried young professional tossers, i can at least say it's acute if nothing else. (me = egg.)

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the characters were all dislikeable, and the dialogue seemed deeply unconvincing.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

miles in the show marries the classic blonde 'type' his dad would approve of. i think the dialogue is very convincing!

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, imagine the scottish woman off green wing character was married to the character of miles.

i remember watching this quite avidly and enjoying it but not really liking anyone in it esp. not miles.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

I hated it at first for the reasons people give here. Then I liked it and didn't think they were so bad - apart from Milly and Egg obv.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

milly is worst character really.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

or the one with the really 90s hair.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

tinita tikaram's brother was maybe the worst. actually they were all irredeemably awful except, maybe, warren.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

who's 90s hair?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, him. he was only in series 2, right?

you can't hate anna.

xpost

the one who wasn't a lawyer. wore a puffa-jacket (much like me, c. 1996).

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

nah, anna was great and alot like my best mate. can't think who puffa is.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

aha, kira, the officer girl.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Music adviser? The music on This Life IIRC consisted of nothing but Radiohead, Portishead and Massive Attack.

nono there was lots more! also anna had a drugstore poster on her wall and if i hadn't already thought she was totally fabulous in a kind of almost hardyish "no. no... NO... ANNA! ...oh, anna"- way (also for when, on having a drink thrown in her face, she retorted "you should have warned me. i would have opened my mouth"), that would have made me love her anyway.

i fear the return though. i met egg in a boozer too, with the ginger guy off teachers.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

my sister has met egg. good bloke, she said.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

My goodness, this would be appear to be the only thread on ILX where I haven't told my Dan13lla Nard1n1 anecdote. It's not very interesting. We sat opposite each other on a train from Preston to Manchester - she had a manila folder with "script" written on it in angular biro. We talked about Chris Evans. She was very nice. The end.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

hurrah! what has she done since then though? that big women thing was awful, i remember trying to make myself like it bc she was in it and failing.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

i've seen her in a few things. she was in that film 'festival' (from the maker of 'teh book group') last year, abt the edinburgh festival.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

looking at imdb, it's been a quiet decade.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm wondering if this reunion will just be the housemates or whether we'll get a glimpse of some of the fringe characters as well. I just want Kira to be in it really.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think of her as 'fringe', i'm sure she'll be in it. i am actually psyched about this; on reflection this is one of the best dramas british tv has ever done. i could do with a whole new series tbh if up to original standards. am more pessimistic about 'cracker' because only fitz and his wife will be in it.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

Having recently swordfought with Deep and Bloom I'm surprised Davenport can actually be arsed with this.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

british actors are funny like that -- witness coogan, after co-starring in a summer blockbuster, doing 'saxondale'.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

contractual obligation?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think anyone actually went to see Around The World in 80 Days, is the thing. He's probably _still_ more famous for shagging Courtney Love.

Though he's in The Persuaders with Ben Stiller. Can't fail!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Anna for the reasons Emsk said, the failings, the alcoholism, the sharp remarks. I would hate her in real life, obviously. I detested Milly with a vengeance, spiteful, ungrateful cow. Is the correct answer that the characters were enjoyable without you actually having to *like* them?

Should we start just guessing who Mrs Dr C was? I'm hoping she's the lassie (Nicky?) that ran the cafe that Egg went to work in. Or Francesca.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
this starts its run of repeats tonight on BBC2 after newsnight then every week-night for the next few weeks. let's see how it stands up.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 6 November 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

I watched it quite recently. It does. I shall, of course, be watching again.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 6 November 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Though I'm not convinced thus far that I'm right. Also naked Egg = no thanks :-/

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 6 November 2006 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

OK, Milly repeatedly going "it's the nineties" is a bit ridiculous, considering it was in the nineties so it's not like they have to point it out. Milly really *was* an annoying cow. Egg = boring stupid bastard. It really was all about Anna.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

Also roffle x 100000 at Miles' stupid hair.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

some1 texted me that this was on but missed first bit. every night a bit much!

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

I agree. Two hours every weeknight is a bit much. Apparently it was going to be a one hour/weekly thang in the build up to the Xmas special, but the schedulers forgot all about it and had to cram it in.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

it's a ploy to get people to go "oh fuck it i can't keep up" and buy the dvd.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

Like anyone is going to watch this other than nostalgia-stricken 30 somethings. And they're all too old to stay up for two hours after Newsnight every single night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

otm

but you might as well say "like anyone is going to watch this other than drooling simpletons" or "yuppie fucktards". these niche demographics still provide audiences for hit shows like 'catherine tate' and 'how do i shot mortgage'.

'this life' is probably one for bbc4 these days.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

Dudes, I'm neither a 30-something a yuppie fucktard or a drooling simpleton and I fucking loved this show. Although it was mostly because I wanted to leave Perth and move to London and become Anna. Two out of three ain't bad. Actually, make that three. I kind of have a Miles.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

The gay Welsh guy was the only one I could bear in the entire show. Whatever happened to Milly?

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

And they're all too old to stay up for two hours after Newsnight every single night.

Hi dere!

I think he was Scottish, Dadaismus, if you mean the red haired plumber dude.

I hate this fucking pile of shit programme.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

No, no, one of the main characters was a Welsh guy, who was gay, it appears nobody remembers him now!

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

I don't remember him, no. Are you sure you're not thinking of late Dad's Army?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

What, Mr. Cheeseman, the guy who worked on the local paper?

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

The gay one was Warren, who went away travelling and then came back and said "Outstanding".

I never really liked This Life, though I watched it all anyway. I think my main problem was you were supposed to think everyone was crap or uncool, except for Anna, who was supposed to be this smart, exciting modern woman not afraid to speak her mind, be not "nice" etc.

But she was rubbish at it! It was like, if you were in a bar, and knew someone with all those qualities in your real life, and you were intimidated/impressed by them, and then you spotted someone else doing that turn at another table with their friends, but instead it looked ridiculous and you wouldn't be able to explain to someone else why it was totally different, but would be reluctant to just put it down to the benefit of distance.

Well, that's what it was like for me anyway. Her "cutting" remarks always seemed so blunt. I thought the second series was better than the first (after the writer changed, I think?)

I'm all about Perfect Day.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

You mean Warren? Presumably people forget him because:

a) he wasn't in the second series until the final scene.
b) he was eclipsed by Ferdie's cock.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

**It was like, if you were in a bar, and knew someone with all those qualities in your real life, and you were intimidated/impressed by them, and then you spotted someone else doing that turn at another table with their friends, but instead it looked ridiculous and you wouldn't be able to explain to someone else why it was totally different, but would be reluctant to just put it down to the benefit of distance**

OTM. But I think she was great BECAUSE she was sort of unconvincing - more like people IRL are.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose so, but I am very insecure and would then have to watch the whole show going "You tell him in an unconvincing, like people IRL kind of way, girl!" so that people knew where I stood.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

I remember enjoying this when it was on first time around, probably because I fancied Daniella Nardini (and ate her Dad's ice cream!).

Thinking back, the characters and dialogue were mostly shite and some of the acting (that means you Ferdi!) was terrible. I remember Anna saying "oh fuck off Miles!" a lot.

Shaky edgy motion sickness unducing camera work = dud.

(slight derail: I just imdb'd Nardini and discovered she was in a TV adaptation of "Quite Ugly One Morning" - I don't remember that. James Nesbitt as Parlabane wtf? Nardini was quite good in Festival)

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

I thihnk I overreacted a bit. It's all right.

I am now trudging through something called Sinchronicity, which is fairly similar.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) You didn't over-react it, it isn't all right, it's shit. I remain mystified by the appeal of Daniella Nardini, I supposed I'm biased because I really really hate her whiny poshgirl West of Scotland voice, it takes me back!

This Life is really just Grange Hill grown up a bit.

Grrrr. Arrrgggh. Worst TV adaption ever. Remind me to tell you about it later on (I think I mentioned it on ILE once somewhere, but I don't think anyone else watched it/cared). Nesbitt was in no way the worst thing about it, surprisingly.

What about Kira? And the girl that worked in the caff with Eg?!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

God, Egg was insufferably stupid and one-dimensional. Even though I've watched it within the last couple of years, I had forgotten the whole "I loves football me, and Alan Hansen rules my life" shite. Possibly more irritating because he's meant to be a Man Utd fan.

Kira was brilliant.

I'm not joking about Perfect Day! I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to this week's denouement. The acting and writing seems a lot better than This Life to meeee. Also, I fancy the women in it much more.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I fancy the women in it much more.

This is the nub of the matter

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I watched the first one which was on a while ago, and thought it seemed like sub-This Life thirty-something rubbish which has all been done before many many times. Have these new episodes improved it any? Or is it just because the women are more attractive.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

I have not seen, or indeed heard of, Perfect Day, but it sounds great.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the Millennium prequel gave nice backstory to chew on. They were really good at all acting younger (even for the short 1995 section) and I liked the Goose/Irish bloke alpha female/male off in a room of their own doing pills and stuff malarkey. And their naughty Goa friend. Also, I was in a cottage with friends in Wales with friends for the Millennium so it was all like THAT'S MY LIFE!!!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Very kind, Alba, but the chances of me getting to watch it are pretty slim at the moment. I will look out for it on Five Life.

He was a rub character anyway and only there because they needed a replacement gay man for Warren.

You're joking right?

I thought his character brought a certain edge to the programme that it had lacked. It was quite interesting how the more upwardly mobile people like Miles related to a someone far down the social order such as a motorcycle messenger. Plus, his conflicted bisexual plot was quite interesting in its own right.

I chose not to read your answer this way - but there could be a certain element in it of "these gays are all the same - just get in a replacement...lawyer/motorcyle messenger - what's the difference?"

I seem to differ with most people over 'This Life'. For example, most people I know cheered when Milly hit Rachel.

My reading of it though is that Rachel's alleged two-sidedness was totally in Milly's head. It's is at least ambiguous if you watch it closely.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Rachel >>>>>>>> Milly

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

I thought it was the inedible in pursuit of the unspeakable, or something like that, and recall being quite pleased when the two Miss Prims were pulling each other's hair.

I watched a bit of "This Life", last night. Two things surprised me:

(1) how little I remember, despite having watched the entire series at least three times
(2) how bad it is. I suppose it's at that difficult age, hasn't yet matured into a period piece (cf "The History Man").

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

The first few eps are a bit rubbish. I'm convinced, perhaps through wishful thinking, that it gets better once the whole exposition thing is out of the way and it's just about the characters. I may well be wrong.

Milly was appalling, and Rachel was a bitch. However, shagging your boss behind your boyfriend's back is worse than being a stuck-up interfering cow, therefore I agree Rachel >>> Milly. But it was still excellent to see her getting hit because she had been somewhat asking for it (even though Milly was completely in the wrong).

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

Replace Rachel's "It wasn't me!" squeal with "You got served, bitch!" and Milly would still come off worse.

Badrock Example (Barima), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the way Milly's behaviour was understandable (especially when saddled with the increasingly immature Egg), even if not very moral.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Had you been to the skronk night, Tim?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Understandable = dump the immature fucker rather than shagging around behind his back. Milly = bitch. I'm cheering on Rachel this time round.

Is this Mrs Dr C?

Or is she the mysterious "Mrs Cochrane"?

Message Boards

Discuss this person with other users on IMDb message board for Mrs Dr C.

Or perhaps she has also appeared in Carrie and Barry as recently as 2004. This however, would mean that she had been in Angels in 1975, when Dr C was a mere slip of a lad.

Those are the people whose surnames begin with C.

I think I have exhausted this particular line of creative thinking.

They've all been in stuff.

This Life brilliantly defined what it meant to be young a tosser in the nineties and captured the imagination of a whole generation of viewers.

Fixed.

saw a few of the repeats of dis ting and was surprised how bad it was

1996 and 1997 should have their few worthwhile cultural products snatched from them before being reallocated to some obscure and terrible epoch in the sixth century

oh. well i've been enjoying it anyway via a charity shop boxset. it was worth £2.

i must've not been watching enough tv cos I can't think of anything I've seen them in, not even holby or eastenders

Where once I'd break out the vitriol now I just shrug and move on to something interesting. That's progress.

Luisa Bradshaw-White was in Holby, you're not watching hard enough! Also Amita Dhiri was in The Bill.

Jason Hughes was the Lewis in Midsomer Murders, Shepherd geezer was in that shit Duncan-from-Blue sitcom, Natasha Little was in Spooks for a while and has been in some other stuff that I can't remember right now. Daniela Nardini has been in some films and does some voiceovers for adverts and also theatre. I'm sure I read an interview where she said she was happy being more Scotland-based since she had her child(ren).

They've hardly had the careers that Andrew Lincoln and Jack Davenport have had, but have hardly disappeared either.

(this is all from my brain, btw, there may be more, but this is stuff I've seen/am aware of)
