Oceans of crystal-clear snot and sneeze fits that by all accounts should cause me cardiac arrest. The colour of spring indeedy!

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

My allergy season is about ten months out of the year.

I do hate it though when they weather is nice and everyone is going on about how nice it is and I am suffering.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago) link

claritan does nothing for me anymore, especially now that it's OTC. "my eyes! the goggles do nothing!" I like a combination of Allegra and Tylenol Allergy Cold Sinus. And Flonase. That's a healthy coctail.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

It comes from living in the country. There's nothing like good old fashioned Oxfordshire farm air to keep you healthy.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago) link

I've got the hay fever medicine on standby, except it's been pissing it down with rain here for the past few days, so I'm happy. When it clears up though, I'll look like my entire family has just been run over.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago) link

My box of Claritin knockoff says only take one a day, but I'm starting to lean toward two or three.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago) link

Flonase does the trick for me -- I don't get a stuffy nose this time of year, thank goodness, but I do get horrible sinus headaches. Flonase regularly used keeps all this at bay, and I'm positive I'll be starting up with regular daily use here soon enough, I've had to break it out once or twice already.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago) link

Is Flonase prescription-only? I get nasty sinus headaches year-round, and assume it has to be allergies. While I appreciate the slimming effect of taking a box of pseudoephedrine every other day, I'm willing to try anything else.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago) link

Loratidine (the 24-hr version), Albuterol, and Flonase is the ticket!

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago) link

Is Flonase prescription-only?

I've only ever gotten it with a prescription, I can say that much, so probably.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

yes it is Rx only.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, it's prescription-only, and yes you definitely want the prescription alternative to taking speed to deal with allergies. Zyrtec, for instance, though Claritin in combination with Flonase may well be sufficient. Not that either of us is an M.D.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

Rhinocort AQ + TheraFlu sore throat formula or advil cold & sinus. Blearch.

The worst is that I get so stuffed up that I get really nauseous and can't stand to eat anything other than toast with jelly or sprite. And I HATE soda. Or if I've remembered to buy ginger root, sip some ginger tea. My doctor doesn't fully believe me that the nausea is from allergies, but I've gotten it every spring- I blame some kind of post-nasal drip action. :-P

lyra (lyra), Friday, 23 April 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

two months pass...
If you have mold allergies, do not come to Philadelphia tonight.

I irrigated my nose late this morning by about 3:30PM I was getting a sinus headache (while remaining indoors most of the day).

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

Is that what it is? My sinuses just kicked up a few days ago, after leaving me in relative peace for a few months. Fucking mold allergies? (I'm not in Philadelphia, but I'm guessing such things would be prevalent along the Eastern seaboard.)

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

And I never had allergies at all until a few years ago. Are we sure this shit wasn't all created in some Pfizer-Merck lab?

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:56 (twenty years ago) link

All this proves is that mankind was never meant to go outside.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:56 (twenty years ago) link

My sinuses are worse inside, yo. The got-dam a/c dries them out like deserts, and then whatever crap is in the rugs or pipes or whatever sets them itching and draining and burning.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:59 (twenty years ago) link

And also, does that whole nasal irrigation routine work? I've tried it a few times, but not enough to tell (it does have the attraction of feeling like you're doing something).

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:00 (twenty years ago) link

This is what I check for Philadelphia. (It also happens to be where I go for allergy treatment.) If you are having similar weather elsewhere on the eastern seaboard, then yes, you'll probably have a similar mold count. When it rains a lot and then gets fairly hot, the mold tends to really proliferate.

Spittle, you do change the a/c filter I hope?

I think what's outside gets in anyway. I woke up very congested this morning, to a degree that is unusual, even though my windows were closed.

Nasal irrigation is great. It is not a cure, but it's effective treatment. (As I've alerady posted, I do it with a Grossan tip attached to a Waterpik.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago) link

That's not an ad for the Asthma Center or anything. I'm not 100% satisfied with them, though they are pretty good. I have my philosophical differences with them about allergy treatment. (I have been getting shots most of my life. Skip talking about potentially curing my allergies with injections, and focus on doing what works for maintenance.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:07 (twenty years ago) link

My hay fever is lasting about twice as long as normal this year.

Can't for the life of me remember why I agreed to buy a house next to a farm :-(

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:22 (twenty years ago) link

mercy. please. i'm not sure how much more of this i can take.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago) link

you do change the a/c filter I hope?

Wait, there's supposed to be a filter?

yeah, I do, but probably not as much as I should.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

my beconase aq nasal spray has worked AMAZINGLY all summer now, but I have found that it basically contains or mutes the symptoms in the nose, but for some reason makes my eyes and sinus headaches worse. still, rather have a slight headache than snot running all over my face

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

one month passes...
Mold is at the extreme level again.

I spent most of the day inside my apartment, not to avoid allergens, but just because that's how it turned out. I finally briefly left my apartment late in the afternoon, walked several blocks, stood around outside for about five minutes drinking iced tea and enjoying some shade, and then ended up going back home soon after. For that amount of exposure I have slightly itchy nasal passages and a headache.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

seven months pass...
Well, fuck this. I woke up with a sinus headache. (In fact, it made it hard to sleep for a while.) I am sneezing. Nasal irrigation has mostly eliminated the headache, but it's still kind of in the background. The pollen and mold count is going to get much worse than this.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I am glad I now work on an industrial estate surrounded by chemical works. More pollution = less pollen!

Not as much pollution as London, though - I was amazed how my nostrils filled up with black goo when I was in London last week.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I used to have this but now I am just allergic year-round when I'm at school, I think I'm allergic to my DORM ROOM. Something in the carpeting or curtains or whatever. Spring break ended yesterday, and my prescription (Allegra) has already become almost useless. Bah.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 11:52 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm using a maximum-strength generic sudafed knockoff. clears the sinuses right up, but it puts me to sleep. so much for pseudoephedrine.

The twelve-hour kind.
(xpost)

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Clarinase, if they have it over there - it has the antihistamine, and a 12 or 24 hour slow release sudafed as well. Sends you completely loopy with speediness, but damn does it work.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:34 (nineteen years ago) link

i get a headache everytime the fucking weather changes.

latebloomer: B Minus Time Traveler (latebloomer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Texas just passed a law that's going to require all pseudoephedrine-based (eg Sudafed) products to be sold by pharmacists to cut back on speed freaks cooking meth. Wouldn't it have been easier to just say "don't sell forty boxes to the same person"?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Fucking allergies *@()#*@()*#@(). I'm a little stuffed up right now.

I've been buying my advil cold+sinus from drugstore.com because Rite Aid around here wants a drivers license to buy a single box. I think it's been handed down to them, but it's stupid.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:54 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck, i can't tell if my out-of-it-ness today is allergies or if i caught a cold from the girl i hooked up with on saturday, who had a cold for a while.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Pseudoephedrine has only ever been available behind the counter at pharmacies here... and in fact even then it is often hard to buy. Can you buy it in supermarkets in the US or something!?!?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:58 (nineteen years ago) link

(mind you we can get codiene meds real easy here =))

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes it's OTC

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Supermarkets and drug stores, some convenience stores, yeah. I used to get a bottle of 100 60mg pills from my school pharmacy for $3.99 that would last me a couple of months.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

ragweed season!

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

For me, it is primarily mold. Where do you live?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Ragweed comes in to it too, generally late in August around here (Philadelphia).

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Even if you don't know what it is causing the problem, you could experiment with only going outside during certain parts of the day and see if some times of day are worse. (They usually should be.) Of course, staying in-doors may not be a choice, or may not seem worth it. I seem to generally have less problem being outside in the evening.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

i have no idea what my main triggers are, but my allergies have been terrible all summer. they haven't been this bad since i was a kid and according to all the information i've seen there hasn't been particularly high levels of anything around here this season. it's driving me crazy.

La Monte (La Monte), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:23 (nineteen years ago) link

OTM. I was outside to go from my apartment to the gym and then back again (with a short detour to a drug store), about 12 blocks in total. Now I have a headache. We are being told it will be a very bad month for ragweed.

I sound like an infomercial but I haven't had any allergy problems since I was prescribed zyrtec a couple of months back, and I usually have a myriad of allergy-related problems at this time of year.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Uh huh. I don't think any mere antihistamine will be a magic bullet for me. I believe I've tried zyrtec.

Ragweed is awful! I've been taking the 24 hour claritin and doubling up with decongestants during the day (or some 12 hour Al3gr4 my parents had lying around). I can breathe! It's really sad when you can count down the hours until you take another by gauging how well you can breathe.

one year passes...
After using it for over a year, I decided to kick Astelin this past Friday. The first few weeks, it was really knocking me out. But even since then, it seemed to be sapping my energy and causing some memory problems (frequent delays remembering names and words that should have been easy to come up with). I took it, in the first place, in hopes that it would allow me to return to being as active as I had been in previous years, but I have been even less active over the last year than I was in the previous one. Anyway, now that I've quit, I feel more alive. I feel like a part of my consciousness that had gone missing is now back.

flowers have felled me once more

I used to think this, too. But I was wrong.

Pretty much anything with a flower evolved that flower in order to attract pollenators, such as bees or wasps. The U&K thing about being pollenated by an insect is that you (the plant) can make a much bigger grain of pollen, packed with more genetic information, and then let the bee carry it hither and yon for you. Bees are strong critters.

Before flowers evolved, plants had to pollenate by dumping their pollen grains into the air and letting the wind carry them. Big drawback there, because you (the plant) must be contented with less genetic info exchange.

Small pollen grains on the wind are the real culprit in seasonal allergies. That means non-flowering plants like grasses and some kinds of trees (e.g. alders) are doing the damage. If you see a big, showy flower display, it means insect pollenation, big pollen, and not to blame for your or my misery.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:26 (sixteen years ago) link

The generic version of Claritin is called loratadine. One dose is generally for 24 hours. It works pretty well and doesn't have drowsy side effects for me when I stick to the suggested dose.

However, I do take some additonal Benedryl (generic: diphenhydramine) at night to help keep the symptoms down when pollen counts are high. That knocks back some of the histamines in my system and the drowsiness doesn't matter.

Neti pot + 8 oz warm tap water + 1/2 tsp plain salt + 1/4 tsp baking soda is my lifesaver. I don't know how exactly but running saline through my nose helps keep my eyes and ears from itching like mad as well.

i saw a neti pot at whole foods this afternoon but i was too afraid to buy one. this looks enticing, though, cause my nose and ears and throat have been totally itchy!

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:48 (sixteen years ago) link

They are freaky to use, especially the first couple of times, but really worth it imo. Great for dry winter places, dusty air (I was working in a coal yard 2 weeks ago), and washing out the allergens.

mkcaine, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

If'n y'don't have a neti pot, it is possible to simply place some warmish, slightly salty water in a shallow bowl, dip your nose into the water and snort it up into your nasal passages. I do this frequently.

Aimless, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to do that, but got more sinus infections. Then switched to that Ocean saline spray, then neti pot 3 years ago. In one side and out the other seems to be U&K for me. ymmv. You can use a teacup or a measuring cup, or a gravy boat too. But using something with a spout helps.

Jaq, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 04:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Throat-affecting allergies?

I've had a wacky throat irritation since late May, which my sister (from 100 miles away) diagnoses as allergies. Well, I've never had a persistently touchy throat like this before...Went to the doctor a month ago, and he felt a cyst on my throat -- which mercifully turned out, after an ultrasound, to be "nothing" -- but, see, he was so distracted by the "lump" that HE FORGOT TO LOOK IN MY MOUTH!

So now I'm going back to him next week cuz, hey, I'm spitting up *minute* amounts of blood. Anyone have that from allergies?

Teh Fever has been not too bad for me in UK this year until yesterday, when usually reliable loratadine did absolutely fuck all and the whole afternoon and evening was rasping, streaming, bleary eyed horror. Strangely, am back to ok today so not sure if it was a freakishly high pollen count or just random weirdness.

So I've been plagued by these seasonal allergies for the past 7 late springs/early summers. Tried every single OTC allergy med there was to offer, nothing worked and I inevitably spent 7-9 days in total misery - watering, sneezing, dripping. Finally sucked it up and went to the doc this year. He explained that antihistamines work for 85% of the population, but some people need topical steroids. He prescribed Flonase and it has worked like a charm. I'm breathing through both nostrils for the first time in 2 weeks!

i was using zyrtec for the past couple of years and it worked great until the past few months. useless now.

this allergy season is absolutely killing me regardless, though the chlorpheniramine is fairly effective when it comes time to take another dose (i take it 3 times a day) my sinuses are just on fire.

Only tree pollen allergy for me, so this nonsense is going to be over by the end of the month. It's the last two/three weeks that are the most difficult though. And whoever made that Optrex advert where everyone has bits of tree/flowers sticking out like overgrown eyelashes knew their target audience.

I can taste the pollen in the air.

I’m so tired of sneezing and itchy eyes, my usual generic Allegra isn’t helping much this year.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Monday, 19 April 2021 19:58 (three years ago) link

Woke up gasping for water several times last night. All I've been on is claritin and it isn't working either.

I AM FUCKING DYING.

seriously, i feel worse now than i did when i had covid— head full of snot, sinus pressure poinding 24/7 even with meds, endless tissues, just abysmal time to be alive tbh. i wished out loud today for death.

It's bad this year.

just like Christopher Wray said (brownie), Monday, 29 April 2024 14:23 (four months ago) link

i feel like i can barely move and that my body is filled with rocks and i can't breathe and there is something really wrong with my throat and my eyes are all fucked up but other than that i feel fine.

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 14:38 (four months ago) link

burning throat, sinus headaches, runny nose - it's all the perks of having a bad cold except that it never gets better

just like Christopher Wray said (brownie), Monday, 29 April 2024 14:41 (four months ago) link

medicine makes it better for me. flonase and the meth one. claritin-d.

but if nothing works you might want to get those shots that doctors give.

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 14:46 (four months ago) link

definitely worse for me after it rains.

"When rain hits grass and weed pollen, it can break up the pollen into smaller particles. This makes the pollen spread more easily and can lead to worsening allergy symptoms, particularly with heavy downpours. Rain can also increase mold and dust allergy symptoms, as mold and dust mites thrive in warm, humid conditions."

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 14:48 (four months ago) link

fyi several pharmacists and RNs have told me that claritin is a pretty mediocre antihistamine and is actually only effective for 25% or less of people at the normal dose. at an effective dose, it's not non-drowsy. so they market claritin-d hard

zyrtec/xyzal are a bit better (I use the latter) and I believe they're both available in generics now. you can always supplement them with a generic sudafed decongestant

I try to not take all the things all the time but xyzal+sudafed every morning and maybe a little generic flonase to supplement

if I do yard work or spend a bunch of time outside I obviously shower later and burn my clothes (j/k)

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 29 April 2024 15:25 (four months ago) link

i just buy claritin-d for the meth properties. it keeps me upright. it mostly works. the flonase does seem to help with my nose/eyes/throat.

stuff like zyrtec make me sleepier. allergies make me VERY tired. like, falling down tired.

this is the dustiest town i've ever lived in. tons of trees. tons of dirt. they don't really clean the streets. we had boxes of books out on tables Saturday and Sunday at the store and I was going through them inside here this morning and they were just covered in dust/dirt. so, you know, i'm surrounded.

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 15:41 (four months ago) link

xp I hear that. I get this weird fatigue by evening some days this time of year and every time I'm just "why do I have no energy? I must be old or dying"

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 29 April 2024 15:41 (four months ago) link

what's weird - it IS fatiguing but I have a hard time sleeping when I'm going through it.

just like Christopher Wray said (brownie), Monday, 29 April 2024 16:46 (four months ago) link

I've had fairly good luck with cheap generic Claritin (loratadine) - I had absolutely horrible allergies as a kid when there was only Dimetapp and Benadryl, the meds today are much better
Cheap generics mostly keep it at bay until some unknown tree comes online in June, but that generally lasts just a week or two - no idea what's the source, but no amount of pills will save me

two weeks pass...

bad this year. yeesh. i feel like i'm in the poppy fields with dorothy and the scarecrow. this town is so fucking fecund. its like a jungle out here. i swear everything just became impossibly green and lush in one week. which, you know, is a good thing. just complaining. nobody else wants to hear it! i nap a lot when i can. go home early. its so nice out and i feel crap. oh well.

scott seward, Monday, 13 May 2024 17:34 (three months ago) link

At least one study has indicated that the more carbon there is in the air, the more potent the pollen itself is.

Least challenging (#96) on that list is Cleveland! I live there and would probably die if I lived in Wichita.

Brownie - my birthday twin iirc - I work for a big employer based in your city and someone brought me buckeyes recently! They are DELICIOUS. I have nothing to add about allergies - don't have any. Sorry for all who are suffering tho.
