Describe your coffee mug thusly

I’m sitting here sipping tea from a tall latté-style Dunoon pottery mug which has a map of the British Isles on it, around which are denoted all the shipping forecast areas (Dogger, Fisher, German Bight, Fair Isle, Malin, Rockall, Cromarty etc etc). And very educational it is too.

What jolly slogans or pictures are to be found on your coffee mug today?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink tea

Describe your tea mug thusly then:)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't drink hot drinks.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink from a cup not a mug

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

A plain silver travel mug with the brand name "Nissan Stainless" stickered on it.

Not very fancy, but keeps coffee warm for hours. (I make myself a cup first thing in the morning, and that usually lasts me through lunch.)

mike a, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have a lovely hand painted stripey mug which mysteriously disappeared. Then I had a mug with my name on it, which broke. Now I am using my bosses mug (I brought him a new one) which says 'Mr Perfect' on it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A white Seinfeld mug that my high school girlfriend's mom gave me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet I have a similar model to yours Mike A. Just sort of a stainless steel capsule, more than a mug. No handles. Thermos brand. Has a yellow, faded/ing JSBX sticker on it.
When I put on the sticker, I was planning on loading the thing up with stickers, so that people would know that I was, y'know, rock&roll. But I don't really want people to think anything about me. Cuz I don't like people.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread irritates me for reasons i can't quite put my finger on.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Because so many people drink tea?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

CJ -- how in Gods name did you manage to get a copy of the promo mug for "This is a Low"? I'll give you 70 bucks for it.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a "Mike Read Tee Hee Mug", it's at my Mums I believe.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is a travel mug, one of these silver metal ones. It was a promotional item and therefore reads "Colonial Title and Abstract Service: Reaching Beyond Excellence". The lid is black and doesn't always screw on all the way and therefore I get coffee all over myself.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's not an official Blur mug. I bought it from a ship's chandlery on the Isle of Wight last year.

I'm really sorry this is irritating Mark P. I am sad now.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark P. is too irritable. Maybe he should cut back.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

At work, I've got the standard silver travel thermos from local chain Ancora Coffee, logoed as such.

At home, my favorite is a white Cafe du Monde mug from New Orleans, or a black oversized Farscape mug.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's not an official Blur mug. I bought it from a ship's chandlery on the Isle of Wight last year.

I was totally joking. As far as I know, there is no official "This is A Low" mug, or I would have already bought and broken it.

I drink coffee from one just like this every morning.

Nemo (JND), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The one at hand is small in stature, cream colored, with a handle that lifts slightly towards the heavens before cascading back to meet with the base, I fill it up to within a centimeter of the rim, it has "GE100 ANNIVERSARY" inscribed on it in robin's egg blue lettering, and it contains my life force within.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

In our house there is much bickering over who gets to use the promotional mug for Scholl "compression hosiery". It was here when we got here, it'll be here when we leave, it's the greatest mug of all time. It has a picture of a stylised rose on it and the motto "A hose by any other name just isn't Scholl". How great is that?

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have a mug that declares my cartoon-heart love for the city I live. For when I want a sarcastic cup of coffee.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite one was bought at a thrift store and proclaims, simply and in block lettering, "I had a bad idea."

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

These metal travel mugs sound spiffy. Are they like mini Thermos flasks, essentially?

We just got an exciting cafetiere that is also a Thermos! Evenings on the beach have acquired a whole new fresh-coffee-shaped dimension!

I don't often drink tea or coffee at my desk though so I haven't got a mug to describe.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it is white and tall and china and is provided by the company. A few ppl here are REBELS and bring in their own.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

when we moved into the office we went to Argos and bought 9 Bright Mugs. i've adopted the yellow one with the crack in as my own. it's nothing special - there are two others just like it - but the flaw makes it unique.

http://www.mushrush.com/images/blog/tattoo1.jpg

The ones I actually drink out of are many and varied, though at work I mostly drink out of whatever paper cup my morning coffee happens to have been purchased in.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of you daubing your tattoo with coffee and drinking from that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. You're very serious about your coffee, I take it.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

CJ, the metal cylinders have plastic lips, if that makes you feel any better, and they're plastic on the inside too. The metal's just there in case you need to stop a bullet.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my friends has a travel thermos that is also a french press. The mug that MAKES ITS OWN COFFEE.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

French press = cafetiere. Possibly. Either way these are obviously exciting inventions.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend has a travel mug that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter, keeping your beverage warm. very good for hot toddies on the road.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"French Press" sounds like it might have the ability to the ironing for you, in which case I WANT ONE.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My coffee mug knows CPR.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I also own a maroon plastic travel mug that I stole from my baby's momma when we still lived together which has stickers containing the following text: Phish, The Chemical Brothers, GodWeenSatan, Gore '04. It is in my truck.

Lauren, the safest place for it is NOBODY ELSE USES IT. It's cute, will post pic later.

Also I have a ton of Japanese manekineko mugs to distract people with. Am very fussy about mugs.

You *heart* Norah Jones, Jeanne? I had no idea!

my cups, for tea only:

Work:

Safety Thirst, just a standard mug with Safety Thirst written on it.
One with a green bus on it.
One with a guy sitting on a donkey.

Home:

Garfield one.
One with an old fashoined car and James written on it.
One with balloons on it.

I really need a cup with a guitar and Jel written on it. I am very possessive of my mugs, they're all I've got.

I've got two. One is a good 12 years old, and is black, with a silver 'United Federation Of Planets' logo on each side.

The other is white, and says "CUPE Works!", with a CUPE BC logo below. it's the Canadian Union of Public Employees, btw, for those who don't know.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

at work I drink out of a large blue mug that says Skywalker Ranch on it. it was a gift to my wife from Lucas Co. when she worked for their trademark attornies.

Starbucks stainless steel mug, vastly overpriced even after using my employee discount. bastards

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Here at work it's a white ceramic mug, one side has the Ford Motorsports logo and the other side says "Coors Thunderbird - 1985, 1987 Daytona 500 Champion. Daytona Track Record Holder - 210.364 mph." with an accurate drawing of the vehicle in question. I purchased it at a yard sale in NJ for a quarter.

Though I just recently received one from the American Red Cross with their logo and "Thanks For Donating Blood" on it so I've been thinking of retiring the Ford mug after 12+ years of service.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have two favorite mugs. One is large, glossy, and plain black. The other says "I (Heart) My Attitude Problem" and was given to me by my parents when I was a teen.

My work one has a cartoon of a trolly kind of monster thing on it with a big ugly grin and says next to that "you should see me BEFORE I have my coffee!". Workmates at a previous job gave it to me. I have to wonder what they were trying to say.

It is currently lined with 2 week old tea and some mould. Yes, I am a slob.

Great tattoo, Martin!

Someone has NICKED my work mug, which makes me very upset.

My coffee mug is a huge yellow and orange mug with a red heffalump on it. HSA has a much cuter mug, with Louis Wain corkscrew-tailed cats on it, but he's too scared of breaking it to use it.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Gary Larson cartoon mug with a guy standing over one or two dead people with a smoking shotgun and the caption "That does it, Carl. From now on you're getting only decaffinated coffee." I've had it over 15 years.

(And I'm not talking about HSA's Moomins coffee mugs which we're not allowed to use for every day use in case they get broken either.)

seven years pass...

my chances of getting a good answer of this are not good, but...

what is the best affordable coffee mug? i just lost my beloved coffee mug of the last 4-5 years. i need a new one, but if i'm going to use one for 1/10th of my life i want it to be a good one.

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

oh, and i'm talking travel mug, if that wasn't apparent, not the open lid kind that you drink from while watching cartoons

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

affordable?? I had no idea non-affordable coffee mugs existed xp

oh okay

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

still tho, is there really a difference? you put coffee in it and it keeps it warm and you can get one for $5. why do you need a powermug?

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

i'm going to great lengths to avoid someone posting a picture of a coffee mug with HDTV embedded in it or whatever. i want REALISTIC options here!

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

there IS a difference. for example, for my birthday the other day, i received a coffee mug. and it turned out that with every sip, it leaked coffee all over my shirt and crotch. word on the street is that the mug was $5. i knew there and then that i needed a powermug

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

but I have used non-powermugs that didn't leak coffee all over my shirt. what other benefits come with powermug other than that and HDTV?

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

there's also the "how long does it keep the coffee hot" factor

there's ease of cleaning

does it have a handle? if so, how is the grip?

OH SHIT, look at mug #16 in this:

http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-testing/reviews-tests/food-beverages/best-travel-coffee-mugs

Pros: You can sip from anywhere around the perimeter of the lid thanks to a large, push-button opening in the center of the mug's top.

that is a fucking POWERMUG

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

well I guess if these are all $20 or so that's not so bad

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:06 (fifteen years ago)

whoops, i meant #14, not #16.

but look at #15! TIME MUG, with embedded clock on the front, whoa!

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:06 (fifteen years ago)

they all pretty much seem the same to me tho, except some have handles

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

I used to fuck w/ zojirushi double walled thermoses but they keep the coffee hot for too long. also they're heavy.

and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

you'd make tea at 6 AM in the morning and by 5PM in the evening it'd finally be cool enough to drink

they keep the coffee hot for too long.

impossible! i'm a slow sipper, so this actually sounds good to me.

also they're heavy.

for some reason, that really appeals to me!

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

if that's the case, go to amazon.com and type in 'zojirushi mug' into the search bar, my man... I think you'll like what you find. I guarantee it.

and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

ok, it's down to these two:

is the top one the one you had, dayo? the tuff mug? i like it, but is that a sticker on the front that peels off, or a permanent logo? i'd like to go logo-less

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

Zojirushi's Tuff Mug is unbreakable

we'll see about that, amazon.com, we will see

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

no I bought a mug with a tea strainer I can't find the model anymore but I think it's like that nissan mug in one of the links you posted

I think it's a sticker, I could do some ~investigative journalism~ for you and stop in at one of the numerous zojirushi displays here in asia later

and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:18 (fifteen years ago)

it's too late, i bought the Thermos Sipp 16-Ounce Vacuum-Insulated Travel Tumbler, first because it's almost called the Tumblr, but mainly because of this A-type review:

I bought this tumbler for my girlfriend. When I got it home; I opened it and poured in water from the teakettle. Using a instant read food thermometer I checked the temp. I started at 206 deg, closed the lid and let it set. at 1 hour the temp was 193 deg. At 2 hours 182 deg; at 4 hours 164 deg; and at 6 hours temp was still 152 degrees. over a 6 hours period the temp only decreased 54 degrees. During my test I noticed that the outside of the cup did not feel at all warm to the touch; the only part that changed at all was the top and then only slightly warmer. I also tested the seal by turning the cup upside down for one of the hours with no leaks at all.

and can i get those tips frosted, please? (Z S), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

I have a Sbux one Mr Veg gave me for Christmas a few years ago...I can fill it with coffee at 7am and coffee will still be hot at 9am. It's pretty awesome. Stainless steel inside easy to clean, pretty good seal in the lid, has lasted me a long time.

It makes me ;_; to go back to the cheapass travel mug I used to use...leaks all over the place and coffee is practically cold by the time you put the lid on

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

and coffee is practically cold by the time you put the lid on

A yellow medium sized cup with the global alarm installation mega-company ADT logo on it, and their "Always There" slogan written underneath. It reminds me I used to do something in the wider world and get paid for it and perhaps it might be some meta-commentary on mortality or something.

the mug will always be a bathroom mug, yes, that is why no one wanted it. i love to take abandoned and unwanted things. my cat was in the shelter for months. no one wanted her because she was a shy cat. she goes with the green mug.

forensic plumber (harbl), Saturday, 3 March 2018 14:15 (eight years ago)

we only use the beer tankards from ikea as mugs. I think it fits about 20oz, 60cl. When we go to UK, EU we actually take a couple with us because we can't stand the tiny mugs there. And we tend to drink ice coffee so it withstands hot liquids and you are able to put ice in it.

The whimsical stoneware Owl Buddy Mug features hand-illustrated, fine-feathered friends against a straw-colored field, with a creamy interior and narrow brown rim.

Definite notes of whimsy in every sip.

It’s a good sized white mug with a nice weight to it that used to have United States Secret Service stuff printed on it in a nice shade of blue, but the dishwasher scalded that off a while ago so now it’s just plain white like it came from a big box housewares store.

Mine is a heavy ceramic job that's as wide as it is tall, with a big handle you can get four fingers into. It holds 16 ounces. The inside is white (as white as I can keep it), the rim is black, and the outside is bright orange speckled with tasteful white and black speckles.

mine is artisanal

it looks like a product of the earth

instead of a handle it has a hand-warmer pocket of empty space folded into the side

My current is a mid-80s white ceramic mug with a picture of the racehorse Ferdinand:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_(horse)

I most likely received this mug as a free entry gift to the 1986 Kentucky Derby, which Ferdinand one.

Much to the outrage of many horse racing enthusiasts, reports indicate that in 2002, Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners. He likely became either pet food or steaks for human consumption.[1]

In approximate order of acquisition:

Your-olde-name mug with image of olde motor car gifted by grandfather who died circa preteens and acquired or at least produced in metro Miami to which I've never been anywhere close but in which my Dad oddly spent a few years growing up. Still in use, moreso than in childhood, but design fading sufficiently that it should maybe be retired soon.

Elaborately-drawn (vaguely Russian?) oceanic-themed heavyweight childhood cocoa mug I believe still somewhere in the depths of storage

(25+ year) Old Starbucks mug with colorful (but similarly sadly fading) logo of one of their early geographically-described bean varieties. Still in use and favorite for combo of design and satisfying weight/width.

Plastic camping mug(s) from high school-age western backpacking trips with outfitter logo, no longer in use (also in storage?)

20+ year old plastic travel mug from local public radio station, no longer in use

Frank Lloyd Wright art-glass-design-printed mug retired due to fading

Decade-old plastic camping mug from adult western backpacking trip with outfitter logo, no longer in use

Unique and nice dark ceramic mug with logo of umbrella public interest advocacy organization under which friend runs a program; largely unused

Several-year-old tiny espresso mug in deeply satisfying le creuset color

Recent gift of tourist mug with stylized pencil-drawn skyline of prominent western Canadian city in its typical colours. In use.

More recent gift of weighty, richly-textured outdoor-western-themed gag mug, sometimes home to small, excitable grizzly bear

It is very rare for me to put any sort of hot beverage in any but the creates

The other USSS mug, the 2009 Presidential Inauguration mug, the NIST mug, the DARPA mug, the Oak Ridge National Labs mug, and the Patriot Missile mug are all holding up just fine TYVM.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 3 March 2018 19:35 (eight years ago)

Believe the USSS zippo is in storage as well

large faded "The Brown Mug - use it again and again and again ..." rescued from unwanted kitchen items box in the house I lived in in college 20+ years ago. one of my housemates had converted a similar mug into a bong for a different type of fading.

If you teach grade school, and you drink a lot of coffee at work, and your students see you drink a lot of coffee at work, by the time you retire, you'll have enough coffee mugs to stock a Starbucks.
