I've just entered into a four-way sticker book competition with my friends - I am going to laugh when I open up my first packet and get Jonathan Woodgate, Darius Vassell and probably a few other players who won't be getting anywhere near the tournament.

The sticker album also didn't mention the supression of atrocities by the Argentine junta. I guess that wasn't Pannini's forte.

Good (ie famous) players what I have got: Dyer, Pauleta, Baros, Fiore, Zenden, half an England team group shot and England and Portugal shinies. Rah! Also Desailly, Mexes and Zanetti but they came with the album and everyone will have them.
Sideshow - ugliest sticker so far - Christian Worns.

i have only one swapsie so far though, and i think he's bulgarian...

I have a complete 78/79 season one somewhere, for some reason though I ended up with 12 Peter Eastoes, I remember him from the book very well, but playing? not at all :o( (maybe Jonesy can enlighten me?)
― chris (chris), Friday, 14 May 2004 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)
Panini >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Merlin.
If any of you get Ruud Van Nistelrooy, treasure him. He's like gold dust, no one has managed to get him yet. Except there's one Bulgarian who appears in every other pack I buy. He'll be the best known Eastern European in the tournament when it actually kicks off.

I've got three shiny ones (though the German Fussball-Bund is all scratched an' that) & the Tunisian and Dutch squads from my first three packs. Tobias Linderoth (Kajsa at work has been schooling me in how to say his name)! No duplicates.
I bought the Neko Case album at the same time so the staff didn't snicker.

I may up my intake to 10 packs a week. There's a Panini phone number/email address in the back if you're missing any. I hope none of us resorts to that. It would be like calling Childline. Or something.

Joe Cole and Sol Campbell are currently battling it out for the worst Photoshop ever. Although it can't be doing Sol's fragile confidence any good to know he's been DROPPED from the England team photo.
― Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 8 April 2006 09:54 (twenty years ago)
The poses struck by the various squads on their team photos (MANNSCHAFT PHOTOS! GET IT RIGHT) is an ongoing source of fascination to me. There appear to be three basic types:
1) back row stand up, front row lean forwards, snuggling their rears into their team-mates2) back row stand up, front row squat down on their haunches, this style is perhaps more traditional3) front row stand up, back row appear to be levitating (I've only seen this style once so far - I can't remember which mannschaft - but it's my favourite)
Dear The FA,
your persistent corporate alliance with Merlin (or whoever) is perplexing and rubbish, and the England shiny, with two flags of St George, is KK-rub. This doesn't make me want to buy Merlin, it makes me think you are DUMM.
I know, I know, The FA in DUMM shocker, but even so.
Yours,
Tim
― Tim (Tim), Saturday, 8 April 2006 10:02 (twenty years ago)
Yes, but this was actually a well taken good good goal :-) Russell Latapy has plied his trade for four teams in nine years without costing any of them a transfer fee. Not bad considering he was the 33rd best player in the world during that time.
I looked at the album this morning but didn't buy it. I'm worried that if I start collecting I'll destroy the nostalgia I'm felling on this thread and replace it with an obsessive compulsion.
― Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 8 April 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)
Or at least, today's obsessive compulsion is tomorrow's nostalgia. You have to think of the future!

― weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 8 April 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)
What's proving expensive (I don't like to think of the total expense of buying 597 stickers...) is the fact that I feel I have to buy something with the stickers each time. Today it was just The Guardian, but it was £1.30's worth of Saturday Guardian, 80% of which I'll never read.
So, what's the deal with the England players - Panini not allowed to use official pix cos of the FA deal? Is that why Frank Lampard looks like he's wearing a plain white T-shirt?
― Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 8 April 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)
If only we knew someone who wroked at the FA so we could HAVE A WORD.
Oooh Jonesy I got an Everton player last night and he looks like he's in a right strop.
― Tim (Tim), Saturday, 8 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)
didn't realise that Trinidad & Tobago have a player called Jason SCOTLAND who funnily enough plays for St Johnstone. I can hear Motty and co. making the highlarious remarks now ala "Well who said Scotland wouldn't make it to the World Cup...here he is now" and "ball won by Scotland, first time for everything" etc.
― Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 8 April 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

― Tim (Tim), Saturday, 8 April 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Outrageous haircut count so far: very low. There's the Eastern European fellow who looks like a member of Bad Company from 1974, he's pretty great. And the Angolan (I think he's Angolan) who's got that cornrows-turning-into-little-hangy-downy-plaits, but AT THE FRONT! I like him.

Also the detail involved in listing birthplace is inconsistent. Some say "London" (Ashley Cole) while others give more detail like "Islington, just off that road round the back of Angel on the way to the Island Queen but before you get to the canal because that would be more Hoxton" (Joe Cole).

Are you always disappointed whenever you pass a Red Lion pub?
Leave aside the word 'be', and this sentence is (still) somehow a comedy classic.
I would not have known about this discussion had PJM just pointed me to it! It's all happening here!
It is nice to see that Steady Mike has paid off the new mortgage already and is able to splash out on ... stickers.
Really - I like stickers; in the 1980s I bought many. Too many, no doubt, as they were doubles etc; though I also sent off for many specific ones in the post. One reason why I know quite a lot, but perhaps not as much as in a way I should, about footballers of that time (eg: birthdays, ages) is due to the stickerbook craze.
Kenny Sansom was born in Camberwell - maybe 28.9.1959? Glenn Hoddle was born in - Hayes, I think, 28.10.1957? I might be a few days out. The Platini-Tigana-Bossis-Bellone axis I have evoked often enough before. But what about Albert Rust, born in the early 1950s; Antonio Cabrini in early June (was it?) 1956, Zico 3.3.1953? - and so on...
You can see that my facts have become a little (Albert) Rusty.
So, this meet-up.

I had a dose of the Sisypheans last night whilst scanning old photographs. "Who in the name of Brian Cant is going to want to look at these?" And that wasn't even costing me 35p a packet.
I just wanted to join in, y'know.

MJ: I have read your proposal and accepted it with a certain degree of work-related trepidation. But all this talk of Sisyphean pointlessness had put me in mind of my everyday life anyway.

I feel strongly that those who favour sort-pile-stick, y'know, those who choose it as a lifestyle option, shouldn't really be allowed to come to the pub on Weds. I mean, they presumably have their own pubs an' that. Where they can...do that sort of thing.
Fancy-A-Pint wrote about The Old Bell:

The story is told of Noel Coward taking his little niece for a walk in Kensington Gardens one morning. Her attention was taken by two dogs enjoying coitus a few yards away. "Uncle Noel, what are those two dogs doing", asked the little girl. It is said that Noel Cowards reply was, "Well my dear, the dog at the front is blind, and the dog behind is pushing it to St Dunstans".
In the course of looking up the precise details of that story, I discovered that BLIND DOG AT ST DUNSTANS is also the title of an lp by CARAVAN, which is surely in Mooro's big bag of prog.

I think Smiths might be yr best bet on Fleet Street, though the newsagents a little way up from there, next door to the Tipperary, seem to sell everything in the world so there's a chance they'll have them.

Mind you, I can't really imagine anyone anywhere near my age playing in the World Cup.
I had not realised, until standing in the queue at my local shop (no longer in the village itself) that the Merline sticker book is *just* England. This is very discouraging, and feeds into and off of psychotic nationalitic impulses.

Portugal's Maniche wins the Jim Carrey in Dumb & Dumber award. Paraguay's Roque Santa Cruz and Diego Gavilan are wearing big fake ears. Best fringe so far goes to Hernandez of Costa Rica who somehow manage to have a poker straight fringe despite having wavey hair. 11 swaps out of 30 packs so far. Brazilians are rare, only two for me so far. I seem to be getting lots of British based players but very few England players (SWP, Joe Cole and a team badge, I think). All the stadiums look the same.
Here's a thing. Rip the end off a pack, take out your stickers, press the empty pack flat. Try to open it again. You can't.
― Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 1 May 2006 11:56 (twenty years ago)
I'm annoyed it's the more obscure teams because I can never remember which players I need.

Sticking over is OK if the sticker below is flat (you wouldn't know I've a Kim Kallstrom hiding beneath another Swede). If not I think I would be trying to remove the landscaped sticker before trying to put in the replacement. This path is surely fraught with danger. You run the risk of a ripped page, and there's no way back from a ripped page: you either go with an unacceptably unsophisticated method of mending, like sellotape (ugh!) or spin off into a spiral of mad solutions.

Naturally, those so-called "lotteries" were a failure. They had no moral force whatsoever; they appealed not to all a man's faculties, but only to his hopefulness. Public indifference soon meant that the merchants who had founded these venal lotteries began to lose money. Someone tried something new: including among the list of lucky numbers a few unlucky draws. This innovation meant that those who bought those numbered rectangles now had a twofold chance: they might win a sum of money or they might be required to pay a fine--sometimes a considerable one. As one might expect, that small risk (for every thirty "good" numbers there was one ill-omened one) piqued the public's interest. Babylonians flocked to buy tickets. The man who bought none was considered a pusillanimous wretch, a man with no spirit of adventure. In time, this justified contempt found a second target: not just the man who didn't play, but also the man who lost and paid the fine. The Company (as it was now beginning to be known) had to protect the interest of the winners, who could not be paid their prizes unless the pot contained almost the entire amount of the fines. A lawsuit was filed against the losers: the judge sentenced them to pay the original fine, plus court costs, or spend a number of days in jail. In order to thwart the Company, they all chose jail. From that gauntlet thrown down by a few men sprang the Company's omnipotence--its ecclesiastical, metaphysical force.

I didn't even think of Panini and their Grade A adhesive slivers at the weekend, PJM. Gordale Nurseries, Parkgate prom - ice cream and fuchsias. Bought the folks a Freeview box which only picks up three of the six muxes. The Newcastle Brown four-pack was more successful. Ava throwing food on their immaculate carpet. Etc.

Just give 'em up if people need them. You're not at school now. The main difference to adult vs kid trading is avoiding putting them in spilled beer.

I feel ashamed for bringing capitalistic playground principles to the noble art of sticker collection.
-- Alba (albab...), May 22nd, 2006 11:57 AM. (Alba) (later)
You're so wrong. The market factor is being sadly overlooked. Swapping one for one, or even worse, giving them away, is like letting your mate win at a sport - the joy and excitement is gone. If you need Mark Viduka, say, to complete your book, you should be offering Ailsa at least 30 stickers, including several shinies, plus a Mars Bar and your beloved copy of Biggles Goes Down In Flames or whatever. That's just the RULES.
― Crimea River (Mark C), Monday, 22 May 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)
I shall REPORT BACK with numbers once I've come back from going into town to buy more stickers.
― ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 May 2006 10:22 (twenty years ago)
I don't want Mark Viduka and his stupid squashed-up face, though. I've already got two.
― Alba (Alba), Monday, 22 May 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)
I have a Dr Who pig-in-a-spacesuit sticker. I think it must be like a joker, you can put it in any space in any sticker album, and it counts as a "got".
Generosity = CHEATING.

― CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:04 (twenty years ago)
I just bought 10 at lunchtime from Woolworths, the woman who served me flipped backwards and forwards through 2 different boxes to randomise my selection. I should be grateful, I suppose, but while she was doing it I couldn't help thinking that I'd be less likely to get swaps in adjacent packs.

YMOF, if you're reading, pls see my comments on your thread in The Other Place, ta.
No-one has listed the SuperPanini Postage Stamp Ceremonial Seal Without A Number in their wants list. Does everyone have it or are those who don't have it in a state of blissful ignorance concerning its existence (as I was until I bought one one day)?
Anyway I have a swapsy of it, if anyone is interested. Obv YMOF won't be because it's not one of The Numbers.

18 (Das Deutscher schinyschaft which it seems is not the groovy spiky VW sign rotated through 90 degrees DFB logo which I had been expecting but is in fact einen Deutscher Eagle thing, a bit of a disappointment I have to say)268 (Iranian dude whose name escapes me)440 (Willy Sagnol - I hve stopped making Willy jokes now, having been making them incessantly in the pub last night)
Any help with getting these greatly appreciated obv.

I've been doing fag packet calculations and the 'got:not got' ratio has been about right every time. I started today with 462/597 stickers = 77.3% and after 100 stickers I'm up to 480/597=80.4%. I had 82/100 gots=82%.Any slight variation is probably down to small sample size (and surplus Americans, Dutch and Bosko Balabans).

Well actually I needed 460. So I haven't finished.
Willy Sagnol has extracted a high price for my persistent lame jokes using his proud forename. Which I now eschew entirely.
If anyone has a 460, I'm interested. I am finding that 460 very hard. It's the 460 which has let me down. again. Steve had two 460s but he gave one of them away to another man. Ect ect.

But Mark's fixation is surpassed by Gman writing at My Sofa World Cup...
Gman is a sticker collector extraordinaire and needs only 24 more (at last post) to fill his Panini album. He could send off to buy the missing few - but his pride means he wants to "swap to completion".
I like his description of the World Cup: "Essentially the climax of four years of waiting, debating and watching videos of the last World Cup," though do his views on rival sticker albums show mildly disturbing tendencies?
England have their own own album produced by the frankly second-rate Merlin collective. All people who love stickers do NOT collect Merlin.

Tom: do you still need 305? I've got "[for TE]" next to it in my list.
I still need 187 stickers, so no point listing them here - though I will send the list to anyone I'm swapping with. Too tired right now though.

I'm down to FOUR: 216 (Serbian bloke), 275 (Iranian dude - which I hope Steve is still holding for me), 531 (Casillas) and 551 (some Ukrainian).
Omino, thanks for Morientes. He might not have made the world cup squad, but he can take comfort from the fact that he is now stuck firmly, if slightly wonky, in my album.

I'll check out that other place and see if I can help out other people.

after yesterday's raid on matt DC and tim H's piles (ooer) and the arrival of N's swaps i am now down to SIXTY NINE NEEEEDS!
― CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 4 June 2006 11:11 (twenty years ago)
Setting aside the 460 debacle, the most recent of my wrongs was saying that I thought I needed the Turkish Manschaft, of course I need no such thing, Turkey did not qualify and therefore they have no mannschaft.
In fact, I am in need of a 586, the Tunisian mannschaft.
I have the 174 variety of Heinze on a promise, and then really all I need is the 586 and I'm done. Anyone got one?
Apologies to all my Turkish and Tunisian readers for my gross stupidity.

― ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)
Although after Carsmile's immensely profitable raid on my doubles pile on Saturday, it's quite possible I no longer have some of them. Sorry.
Still, 13 to go!
― Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:21 (twenty years ago)
I've started making separate piles - ones I've promised to people stay in my drawer, then I've got two piles of swapsies, one that the Glasgow lot have been through and new ones that no-one's had a look at yet. Any further division and it will get confusing. How did I cope with this when I was a kid? (answer: I was an anally-retentive little so-and-so, but also it didn't matter so much overall and I gave up before the end)

11 needs from 50 stickers (though the HMV policy of scanning each individual pack paid off as the poor girl struggled to cope with the ten packs as she scanned them and she only charged me for nine).
I'm actually quite annoyed I can't do a huge trade-off for my Tunisian Mannschaft now, that would have been fun, having boys fight over me :-)

I went shopping today, with great results for me (5 out of 50 at this stage!) and other people.
Matt - do you still need 14 (Nurnberg), 497 (Choi Jin-Cheul), and 549 (Ukranian Mannschaft)?
And Gerry will feel the benefit of my slothery: because I haven't yet mailed out your envelope, you can have 213, 505, 506 and 532 if you want them.

Glasgow, let's get stuff sorted. Then I can mail a more revised-er list which doesn't make me look rubbish. And then, when this is all done, I can redecorate my whole house with stickers Jan Venegoor of Hesselink's stupid bloody face which I swear to God is in EVERY SODDING PACKET I BUY! Plan this week, after all my postal swappage is complete, is to blow my WHSmith voucher (which I've had since about 2003) on as many packets as I can find and then next week come grovelling for what will hopefully be only a few dozen remaining needs to those people I haven't yet mithered by email.

I also discovered this evening whilst stickering (thanks Alba, Tim H, Onimo!) that I have a few more needs that I thought and that - horror - I've actually given away a few stickers as swaps that were never swaps to begin with. Oh well, it's done now - move on.
Thankfully, Cuauhtemoc Blanco is in his rightful place; on Saturday, the missus and I spotted Mr Blanco stuck to a lamppost - he peeled off rather easily but wasn't in such good nick by the time we got him home (we'd re-adhered him to the handle of Ava's stroller but then sort of forgot he was there and...scrunch). No matter cos I already had him; sorry if he's a precious need for anyone but I'm not sure how I'd have posted him. With a different numbered backing, I guess.

Only 551 left potentially. Whoever sends me this gets all my remaining swaps. It is a wodge.
Blanco mentioned upthread. Weirdly I was teaching my girlfriend how to do the Blanco hop last night. She thought I was winding her up. Her Cruyff turn is coming along too.

At around 8.31 I stuck the Tunisian Mannschaft into the last remaining space in my album.
And... relax.
What to do with this half-inch of swapsies, then? Anyone not had a go through them?

Once I collect the stickers ailsa has for me I will require:
...
AN PANINI COMMEMORATIVE STAMP!
Can anyone help? Please? I have a mountain of swaps for whoever has a spare.
― Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 26 June 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)
And to give Alba 10 & 505, and Ailsa 83, 186, 461 & 507. The 186 was going to 0nim0 except obviously not, now.
― Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 June 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)
Rudeness may continue, as I need one as well. I don't appear to need 461 or 507 any more (I think they came from Greig? Or Steve? I can't remember - thanks anyway)

It's the empty husk that's left where all that giddy excitement was a couple of months ago, when the summer seemed to stretch ahead forever and we all thought Germany were rubbish and Frank Lampard was a world class footballer.

― Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 16:03 (eighteen years ago)
So tempted!
― ailsa, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)
i can't believed i've logged back in, just for this.
anyway:
this week's MATCH magazine (price £1.80) comes with a FREE sticker alBUM and single packet of stickers. I also already have my own dealer, as the nice lady in East Ham Woolies opened the box of stickers (fresh in this morning) especially for me (they weren't even priced on the till yet!).
― CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 24 April 2008 09:36 (eighteen years ago)
I fear interest amongst stockists may be hampered by England not being in the tournament this year. We need The Sun or someone to give away a free album and then they'll be all over the place.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 24 April 2008 09:38 (eighteen years ago)
bah there'll be no badly 'shopped England players in this year's :(
not sure if I'll do this this year or not.
i discovered the other day I've still got all my bosko balabans doublers from 2006.
― onimo, Thursday, 24 April 2008 10:27 (eighteen years ago)
i also noticed, in the pile of sticker boxes behind the counter, TWO WHOLE BOXES of "goal 2006" which i *think* were the trading card ones...
i found my pile of 2006 swapsies the other day too...
― CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

i might be ready, if i could find anywhere that sold packs for less than FIFTY FLIPPING PENCE! fuck that!

IT IS TIME.

I come to you in great excitement to report that one of the Chilean players is called Waldo Ponce. Waldo Ponce! Best name ever.
― Matt DC, Monday, 19 April 2010 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
Aw, I'm so unemployed that I can't do this (actually was last properly unemployed in 2006 when we did this before but I lived in a different house with a smaller mortgage and could afford fripperies like this, and all associated beerage that it entailed, in my temporary state of poverty).

I remember my mum calculating how much my sticker album cost the one time I was allowed to do it (1982/83) and recoiling in horror when it worked out at thirteen quid.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 19 April 2010 19:34 (sixteen years ago)
Just me and Matt then is it? I've got about an inch thick pile of swapsies and i bet i'm not two-thirds of the way to completion yet...

There's another Panini thread on new answers right now Steve.
I'm 31 and several of my friends are buying them. I caught an old schoolfriend buying 36 packs in Sainsbury's last weekend.

Scanning upthread, what absolute madness was I gripped by in April-June 2006? I think it must have been displacement activity. I binned the album that summer sometime.
