i think there was another thread, i couldnt find it though. perhaps it was just the big roadtrip one.

anyway, i am due to arrive in sf on may5, and leave early on the 9th.

so this is the thread for, well, me, i guess. where i ask if anyone is around at this time, if anyone wants to do a fap, and also to ask advice, what are the things i definitely should do in sf, where is the best place to stay, those kind of things...

over to you!

The Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

there are no pints at the tea garden!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It is, however, a fine place to go and be calm and reflective and enjoy the surroundings.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 April 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a long walk along Land's End. You can see the Sutro Baths remains which are kind of like Roman ruins along the Pacific. Here's a neat panorama shot I just found (requires quicktime)

hang out with Gavin Newsom!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 April 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Marry Gavin Newsom!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 April 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, I realize that you've probably left for Seattle by now, but like I said, I am fine for that Friday night, I just have to be up at the crack of dawn the next day.

Maybe we could "do" Amoeba on Friday afternoon? I'm not actually working that day.

For things to see, SF is a relatively small city, so the best thing is to get lost for the first day or so you are here. And be prepared to do some walking up some crazy hills. Of all the "obvious" sights, I would still take any visitor to Alcatraz and probably Coit Tower if the weather is nice. For the less obvious, these are useful:

Things to do in San Francisco
San Francisco and what to do in it
san francisco classic or dud

I also recommend visiting the East Bay, officially the best place on earth.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about where to stay. I always rep the Grant Plaza in Chinatown, but that's just because its cheap. There seem to be some interesting hotels in the Tenderloin.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also...I know you say you're leaving early on the 9th, but it's Erlend Oye on the Saturday if you are interested.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

from that blasthaus link you just put adam, looks like 2manyDJs and James Murphy are playing records at Mezzanine (where Luomo was) tonight.

did any of you guys go to the !!!, LCD Soundsystem show last night?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Alex did. I have a ticket for tonight, but I might not be able to make it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

have a good time gareth, ig ot all the relevant details

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I saw the show. LCD Soundsystem was great. !!! was bleh. They sounded like Phish meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the lead singer has an unhealthy resemblance to Carrot Top attempting to doa James Brown impression. We left after two songs (haha such a running them with me and shows isn't it?)

Me and Jen are going tonite, @d@m, but we probably won't be there until around midnight. Let me know if you are still going and we'll look for you.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

how much is tonight? i'm thinking about going.

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

$9.99

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

what will i do with the extra penny!?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Make a wish.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit, I might be going on a date to... wait for it... BELLE AND SEBASTIAN tonight!!! YAY!!! I had no idea they were in town!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

:: cue everyone hating on belle and sebastian....

but they are really very fun live (for some reason everyone in the UK seems to think they're sloppy and a shambles; they've never been anything but wildly impressive musically out here, so I don't know what that's about).

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them in 2001 and thought they were great. It's just that uh... it's a funny date I guess.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean you aren't going to the Lion King on Ice again?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't that the thing about being with a date who put on The Lion king soundtrack? Now I'm confused.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i think that's it. i wasn't there

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

or was i????? mwahahah

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dan, sometime let's chat about technique

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

they do the Lion King ON ICE???? That is the wrong climate for those jungle and desert critters.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahaha, it was a CD in her car. I was amused.

Besides you're married, you ain't got no technique!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

how you think i got married fool!?

alright, i got no technique. i was gonna ask you for some tips.

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 April 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought my technique.

http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/graphics/fact275cfront.jpg

What?

*flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a CD in her car.

I would pay big money to have seen the look on your face at that exact moment.

Still, it could have been worse-she could have been "one of the Animal Collective hyped youth of today"!

;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth,

If you want to hang with the AsiaKitty you can do so with her chaperone.

possibilities:

It's A's Vs. Yankees on the night of the 6th at the Oakland Coliseum.

I can give you a comprehensive tour of the SF bay area via car on thurs or fri?

and heck, all the hipster bars are right outside my door...can check the paper for location of any appropriate rock and roll.

If you're serious, email me since I tend to book up fast.

I may be going shooting thursday or friday.

heck, you can come shooting if you like although I don't think that's part of the SF tourist experience unless you are a Dirty Harry fan, and ammo is expensive, so bring cash.

In any case,

Welcome! and have fun.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 1 May 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Beep beep.

I'm not having much of a chance to check back here, but I'm still in.

http://www.sfstation.com/bars/vesuviocafe/

Yes. Vesuvio's. 6. 6:30. Friday night.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Or failing that, the-chinese-hipster-bar-that-isn't-a-chinese-hipster-bar.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Burritos.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

we are shit out of luck for burritos in north beach

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

but LiPo and the Buddha Bar are around the corner so if we get sick of Vesuvio's we can scram over there. Unless someone else has a better idea.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Club EZ5 (Commercial/Kearney btw. Chinatown/Downtown)"?

Burritos.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

according to my friend it is swanky and modlike and I still haven't been. But we are still SOL for burritos in this part of town.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you survive, Kyle?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay. Well...Blake's, then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you survive, Kyle?

On the blood of englishmen and a bunch of shoegaze 7"s.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

no, this sounds like the place, friday. let's do it. gareth has two or three days to eat a burrito.

I survive by carefully measuring out the medications.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You should see the pills I'm taking at the moment. One has mint in it and the other has fish in it, and I have to take them at the same time. It's terrible.

On Saturday, I spent an hour sitting at a BBQ listening to a story about how Slipknot harnessed themselves to a rotating stage, which the flipped over 180 degrees, but those badass motherfuckers just kept on playing...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

why do you do this to yourself?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

rediscover life

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Doctor's orders.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

[this is no longer what it was originally and is now graphic nudity]

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what's that?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it came up under a google image search for slipknot (kind of)

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

but now he is my new mascot

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

in fact, he is my new god, and yours as well.

so is it ez5 or vesuvio's? can anyone else vote?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No. because Leee can't make it, Alex will be working, gygax may or may not be in NYC, Aja is too young/not real, Dante is too young and possibly evil, Sean is AWOL (though I will drop him a line). That leaves Michael and JaXoN...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that thing, though.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen a better argument for an East Bay FAP.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, you have to wonder about Gareth. Is he as deadpan as all his posts and photos suggest? Does he really wear a lot of brown? How tall is he?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

that is the best summation of SFILX I've ever seen.

the east bay sucks and I live there. Unless we do it at your house.

JaXon I saw you at crate and barrel on Sunday (I think) but I was way across the store and didn't feel like yelling.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

we are shit out of luck for burritos in north beach

el gran taco = decent place that just got remodeled and took a price hike over on broadway btw kearney/montgomery, nothing special except they have mexican bbq chicken that is pretty tasty on occasion.

ez5 on friday night is great, i'm pretty sure jax0n's friend DJ's there (note to JaX0n: it's actually m@1i@'s friend, do you know him?), last time i went it was a pretty ILX UK format-ready (kompakt, timbaland, dfa).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the photo of gareth staring quizically at our strange american phone booths says everything you need to know about the man.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Fine, then I won't bother meeting him.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

we should take him to a goddamned shitkicker bar where they play nothing but Waylon & Willie.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My little joke.

JaXoN is so grown up with his SoMa loft and his Crate & Barrel browsing.

East Bay-bashing is so boring, Kyle.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i am not deadpan

gareth (gareth), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. i know

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

JaXoN is so grown up with his SoMa loft and his Crate & Barrel browsing.

he was carrying a rug! which is what I was buying as well. obviously, it's the place for rugs.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I need a rug. I really need a rug.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Also--I think we just quietly decided to go to EZ5. So there.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it's there or your rugless apartment.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml, you got mail///

gareth (gareth), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't live in an apartment. I live in a bung-a-low.

*checking, Gareth*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, ILX stalking. yes i was at Crate and Barrel, but it was the outlet, so i got a cheapy rug. but that's because i had to save money from the dresser i just bought at Slater Marinoff. ugh. this grown up trendy loft bullshit ain't cheap.

i'm gonna be in LA this weekend for Mother's day. probably leaving friday early afternoon

ihttp://zero.offwhite.net/sk/keysmo.gif (JasonD), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, that didn't work

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I just thought that was an inspired new name!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

where is this C&B outlet?

*cough*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

4th street

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth - which email address did you use? Nothing's come through.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm, Crate and Barrel outlets.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Urgent and key.

I need

a)A rug
b)Some nighstands
c)some lamps
d)Some picture frames and/or prints
e)Storage
f)cd racks
g)garden furniture

Anyway...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sorry but you have to go to IKEA, I think. Or Pottery Barn if you're feeling flush.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Or sidewalk sales/garage sales if you feel like taking your time and bargaining down.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

When our gate gets put up and we get the garden furniture we have our eye on, you will all come out to the boonies for a BBQ on our postage-stamp sized patio.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have some pine CD rack box things you can have, they hold about 90 CDs each. They're collecting dust after I had my ridiculous shelves built.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"All right, the sun is out, the grill is hot and the pool is luke."

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

my friends just bought garden furniture at IKEA and the charge never showed up on their credit card for some reason. so maybe garden furniture there is free.

You could also just drive around and look in people's back yards and then take their garden furniture in the middle of the night.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep trying to convince my wife that we need one of these to lie and drink margaritas in.

http://www.anglianwater.co.uk/assets/Paddling%20Pool.jpg

"No", she says, "they're for children".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I will galdly buy your CD racks from you, kyle.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

even gladly.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I will gladly give them to you for free

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

okay then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to see these rediculous shelves

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, are they made of asparagus or something?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, wait. I've seen them. They're full of CDs. Lovingly collated in alpha-numerical order.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Kyle's shelves vs. the Raggettstacks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

As the ONLY person to have seen both, I can confirm that Kyle's are taller, but Ned's are wider.

*Resists obvious length vs girth "joke"*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lovingly collated in alpha-numerical order"

As opposed to the heartless genre and color order other's use.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 3 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

click here for shelves. First person to successfully name all the CDs on one of these shelves wins a free copy of Hefner's "We Love the City" which I've decided to get rid of but haven't successfully sold on amazon yet.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.fakejazz.com/images/covers/2001/hefner.jpg

Yes, Spin described it as sounding"like Tony Bennett drowning in a giant colostomy bag". Fred Durst does backing vocals on a few tracks.

Bar/Club

Club EZ5

682 Commercial St
San Francisco, CA 94111
Cross Street: Kearny Street
Phone: (415) 362-9321

Editorial Rating: Recommended

DJs, diversity and dice fuel this alluring retro-Asian lounge.

The Scene
Tucked on an unassuming side street at the crossroads of the Financial District and Chinatown, EZ5 mirrors the eclectic junction at which it sits. Chinese hipsters settle in early on plush red couches and beanbags, carrying on jovial games of Chinese dice. Meanwhile, attractive Westerners mingle around the blue-lit bar and adjacent turntables where DJs spin a range of grooves (house to hip-hop). The classroom-sized space glows Chinatown-red with blue tinsel, Christmas lights, retro paintings and funky curtains adding a 1960s decorative touch.

The Draw
The club sits on a nightlife fault line where two cultures coincide--it gives off an authentic Chinatown vibe without being unwelcoming to Westerners. Casual touches like a combination Ms. Pac Man-Galaga video game and baskets of Pringles keep the atmosphere chill.

Save Money
Happy hour is 5pm-8pm daily, with $1 off signature cocktails. Monday and Tuesday also feature $4 well drinks and cosmopolitans, and $5 martinis.

Parking
Street spots open up as the workday ends. The Portmouth Garage (a half block away on Kearny) charges $2 per hour.

As Friday is my day off, I can guarantee that I will not be looking more scruffy than attractive. I will try to remember to shave though. I want to learn to PLAY CHINESE DICE though!! WTF is that some crazy variation of Liar's Dice??!?! (Chinese poker is the greatest four person card game EVER btw.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry that is a "can't guarantee" there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I will bring you some treats. Including a DJ Wrongspeed-shaped treat.

Also-I did suggest the obligatory pre-FAP Amoeba visit to Gareth for mid-late afternoon if you're interested. I'm not working that day either.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

*Drools*

Did you get the DJ /rupture thing btw? I know a few folks downloaded, but my laptop's doing weird stuff so soulseek's been down.

Amoeba sounds great in the afternoon sounds great (as I would probably have been there anyway.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Also sounds great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No, my slsk has been crap. And I...uhhh, haven't got round to Uploading NASTY either. Which you might have noticed. But I can sort all of that out.

Amoeba it is then. I am off to see Air now. Bye.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(Adam, do you know about the new E-Z slsk Mac client? Mostly E-Z w/r/t installing it but still.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

is the codebase for that different than theother version of nicotine? I thought it was just the installer. nicotine on my mac is certainly less reliable than soulseek on my windows machine for some reason (lots of "cannot connect" errors).

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

should I take friday off as well? I worked on a saturday so they owe me.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, we can make a day of hanging out with "deadpan" Gareth. ;)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but apparently you can delete /sw and save yourself a ton of space.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam, do you know about the new E-Z slsk Mac client? Mostly E-Z w/r/t installing it but still

=0 no!

Update: Sean is going to try and make it too.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my wife is coming along. so no-one act like an animal, please.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

...ummm, I should say that that was meant to indicate sadness at being unable to act like an animal, not at the prospect of spending an evening with your charming wife.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They could act like animals for your charming wife instead.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i just checked into the green tortoise hostel. i went into my dorm and there are bottles of half drunk jack daniels, dollars strewn on the floor, and the telltale signs of aussie and british passports. i forgot california was like this:/

littlemelbourne, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

broadway, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Your hotel room came with MONEY and FREE BOOZE, what is the problem?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, "hostel".

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope you didn't get a "view" room... Thursday night, Cinco De Mayo.... ooooh boy...

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, that place sucks, get out! there is another YHA hostel on mason just north of market. it looks okay from the outside, and it's next to Cafe Mason which is a nice place to eat.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No one can host the Gareth him or herself in SF? Or did Gareth insist on a hostel in SF, specifically?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i cannot because alas I have a wife who probably doesn't want strangers sleeping in the apartment.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My place is tiny, and it's in berkeley. And it's a mess. I will feel bad if Gareth gets pantsed by Australians, though. :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just take this opportunity to say -

It looks like we will be meeting in front of Amoeba on Friday around 4:00 and then heading over to club thingy for about 6:00. Speak now if this will not work.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, I didn't mean to make the bay area people feel guilty or anything with my comment.. I was just a little surprised he didn't find an ILXOR to host him, that's all, given that I think every city has pretty much gotten him a place to crash ILX assisted.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

double :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeeeesus way to make us all feel like unwelcoming bastards, DB. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

4pm sounds aces, @d@m.

(I think the lack of hospitality in SF is probably related to the fact that most of SF lives in too small apartments which we pay too much for. So sad.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeeeesus way to make us all feel like unwelcoming bastards, DB. :(

again, I should have just shut up originally, and I'm sure this was just a weird set of circumstances for this particular weekend for the SFers as far as inability to host, that's all I'll say for now and leave it at that.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, so i decided to stick it out, but then when i got back up to my room i looked at the detritus everywhere, and then at my own bed, which was actually inaccessible due to other peoples crap both blocking a pathway to it, and also on top of the bed itself. and i decided to get the hell out.

so i am now in the hostel that adam suggested, on mason. and...its fantastic! the complete opposite. put it this way, they were playing the smiths as i walked in, and the other person in my room has a package entitled "interdisciplinary approaches to..." something or other. i think its going to be a little bit more recuperative here:)

much happier now, Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

dont worry sfers, i didnt expect putting up or anything, i was just really lame abuot sorting everything out, transport and accomodation wise (i ended up booking the flight to oakland in a kinkos in portland at the last minute, and not even researching where to stay).

as long as people come out and meet me, and possible re-enact some deadpan highfives, that is all i hope for...

and, furthermore, Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh well, now I don't feel so bad. I haven't actually stayed at that place but I often pass by. cafe Mason ain't cheap, but mmmmmmmm tasty. I'll try and call you soon, Gareth.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

is cafe mason that place we ate at before dizzee rascal? don't go there in the middle of the night, if so.....

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

stop it, it's fine there.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

well, im showered, unpacked, and just recuperating tonite, today was kind of hectic and stressful. i did want to say that it was only really seattle that i put any real kind of forethought into planning, and that i had only really banked on being hosted there (chris's generous offer in pdx was a last minute surprise), and had planned on hostels the rest of the way (but ended up not planning them properly!)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah for Gareth and his success in finding a better spot! Sir, I don't think anyone minds your last minute booking approach, it's actually part of yer charm. if you will.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I apologize to the SF crue for my questions above... i had ASS-U-MEd certain things I shouldn't have.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Go down to Mission for a burritto tomorrow :). I don't post here, much, but am not working tomorrow if you need anything, ask or whatever. There was just a shooting by my house if you want to come and see the outlines on the pavement. My email is dif than below sorts @ pacbell.net cause of way too much spam.

svend (svend), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That shooting in the Western Addition?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw part of the chase/shootout last night when I was walking around Divisadero/Fulton around 8pm last night. 3 squad cars with all their lights/sirens going flying north on Divisadero making sliding turns eastbound on to Grove. Was Alex in SF home?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he was running tha streetz.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it a chase? I heard that one of the people involved had prosthetic legs.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They were chasing a guy driving a black SUV or truck.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

...was there more than one shooting in the Western Addition yesterday? I heard that police shot a guy with prosthetic legs, and the legs came off.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Was Alex in SF home?"

Nah he was at work. My girlfriend didn't mention nothing neither.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

where's your pulitzer?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, so today i decided to walk as much as possible. so i came at the hostel, and walked directly north on a combination of streets between mason and maybe larkin, until i came to fishermans wharf i think, from there i came back down columbnus as far as washington square and then got some breakfast at, er , marios bohemian cigar shop? it was good but, well, the bread was kind of burnt

then i walked up to the coit tower, and went up in the scaryu rickety elevator, which didnt feel safe at all. good views from the top but my fear of heights precluded me staying up there too long (i realise its openness not height per se, yet this was sort of enclosed. i still had to come down asap though. the weird thing is, for most cities, a high tower brings out the bvest in the city giving high panoramic views, but here in sf you already have that everywhere and the views from the tower seemed to flatten out some of the hills a little

from there i walked back down thropugh chinatown again, past the silly green tortoiose place (and i suddenlyt rememberred, i had made a mental note to avoid this place because of their bus tours and associated promotions,l but then i forgot)

walked down as far as montgomery bart station and got a bart out to Berkeley. then walked around berkely for a while, stopping in ameoba for a bit, only looked for francois de roubiax stuff though, which they didnt have. then after stopping in the post office, i realised i had totally forgotten where the bart station was, so i was kind of lost for a short while. the strip around telegraph avenue was a little overwhelming, it kind of reminded me of a hybrid of cambridge, ma and santa monica, is this fair comment, or am i wide of mark?

then i got the bart to Oakland, and wondered around 9th and 10ht street. it was very different from sf, more so than even tghe book suggested it would be. it felt, almost, nebraskan, perhaps thats not right, im not sure what i am looking to descrivbbe really

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

then, from there i got the bart back into sf, pausing at west oakland to take a few photos. got off at powell st, i think, then walked down towards lower haight, hung around there for a while, went as far as pierce, then turned north as far as alamo square. great views here, including one that i think is maybe a famous image of sf? it seemed a familiar view anyway, then round by Hayes Valley, in a few little shops around there, then the bottom of japantown beforecoming back ot the hostel

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

via ellis st, which was quite depressing with the nuymber of hoemless people clustered togerther, especially as 5there is a hilton on the end of tthat street.

now, im back in the hostel, hbuit i am about to go out again and look for some gfood, theen might go bqack up towards hjapantrown and wander around there depending, food ancd a beer is first priority though

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

this keyboard is shuit

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Great stories! :-) It does seem like a shit keyboard, though.

the strip around telegraph avenue was a little overwhelming, it kind of reminded me of a hybrid of cambridge, ma and santa monica, is this fair comment, or am i wide of mark?

Heh, having been to both, I think you're onto something there! But it has its own special something, if you will.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i also saw, i think, my first dead body, in the middle of the road, in, of all p[laces, Berkelyt, (it was near the bart)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"via ellis st, which was quite depressing with the nuymber of hoemless people clustered togerther, especially as 5there is a hilton on the end of tthat street."

The Tenderloin is really upsetting to me and I've lived here all my life (although perhaps that is why it is depressing.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

God, that Berkeley post office is the bane of my existence.

i also saw, i think, my first dead body, in the middle of the road, in, of all p[laces, Berkelyt, (it was near the bart)

wtf?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

UC students need to solve their differences peacefully (actually not funny at all.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i assumed it to have been a road accident, but i dont know, there didnt seem to be any cars, and there were around 10-12 police, it was all cordoned off. i think it was on shattuck? maybe 2 blocks east of bart. im not sure though because i was trying to navigate berkely with no map and having forgotten where i was going

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, you really should have dropped by. I have been lying around like a slob all day at home. I only got dressed about an hour and a half ago.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Shattuck Ave., I could see being reminiscent of Cambridge and Santa Monica, but Telegraph Ave. is its own special thing (for better or worse). when I first discovered the U-district and hence the Ave (aka University Way) in Seattle, my first thought was "ah, Seattle's Telegraph Ave."

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt plan on going to bnnerekely today, it was last minute, i didnt think i would havbe coverrted Nob Hill, Russian Hill, fishermans whardff, washingrton sq/coit tower and chinatown so early.

a guyt outside tghe hostekl tried to palnm some drugs off on me, and wouldnt take no for answer. i justwaljked straight into the hostel though, and he was unabkle tto follow

sf is much sketchier than i imahgined. or at least its sketchier in downtown and piopular areas more than i imagined. perhaps mmore than i have seen anywhere else

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

re: dead body.. :( dear lord, i'm sorry, gareth.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

sf is much sketchier than i imahgined. or at least its sketchier in downtown and piopular areas more than i imagined. perhaps mmore than i have seen anywhere else

Possibly. I remember when I spent a night at the Transbay terminal on one of my first visits, it seemed like an insane asylum. Without wanting to sound like a callous bastard, you do kind of get used to some of the "sketchiness" and it is not in fact as intimidating as it might seem.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

If you get a chance, it might be worth going over to North Beach. I just remember having the best food I've ever had in Sf there. Lots of excellent excellent Italian restaurants there, and they're all open very late. Very beautiful during the day, too. Not sketchy.

Even though it's kinda cliche at this point, I still very much enjoy the Haight St. area. And there are parts of the Mission, near Valencia, that are really great too. And despite its very touristy nature, the Golden Gate bridge views are gorgeous. If you have time and can cross the bridge and walk around the edge of Sausalito and look back at SF that way, you'll likely be amazed.

Surely the SF vets will deservedly correct me, but sketchiness tends to be stronger in the Chinatown/Market St. area and in Hunter's point. Then again, this may have all revolved around since my last visit.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Althugh better to ask Sean, gygax, or Alex, all of whom have lived in/around the Tenderloin. You don't get dead bodies out here in Berkeley every day, as I'm sure you have gathered. Oakland is another story...

(x-post with the db)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

If you have time and can cross the bridge and walk around the edge of Sausalito and look back at SF that way, you'll likely be amazed.

OTM. or take the ferry from the Embarcadero!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The area past Van Ness to Union Square north of Market and south of Nob Hill is the most discomforting area of the city (even if it isn't necessarilly the most poverty stricken) so yeah DB is basically right.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That said it does bleeds a bit to the surrounding areas.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the dead body thing brings it all down. :-/ A friend of mine also saw a dead person in SF -- in fact, I think he was the one who discovered the person (apparently a suicide) near his hotel.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing people get killed/die is what vacation is all about. Don't be squeemish. It's all part of the tourist experience. (Said by someone who saw dead body and blood covered assailant in Paris.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

For all the talk of sketchiness and corpses, I often feel safer walking through the Tenderloin or Civic Center late at night than I did certain areas of London, but I'm still a newbie here, so maybe that will change.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post really? you never mentioned that!)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

A British tourist got shot a block away from me when I was in New Orleans. I don't actually know if he was shot specifically for being British (it could happen!), but it freaked me out anyway.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, welcome to SF Gareth.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It was on New Year's Eve near Pigalle. I guess I'm really desensitized cuz I totally forgot about until just now. I just assume people get stabbed and die all the time in big cities.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I didn't really see the dead body (Jen may have, I can't remember now). We just saw the crowd of cops around the body and blood on the steps of the subway and we saw a guy covered in blood.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, you've never been to Nebreska! [sigh]

Mary (Mary), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

back again now, after food.

imn not squeamish about the body in the slightest, i find it more strange iu have never seen one before. i am more squamish about the fact that i just drank a hersheys milkshake followed by a coke followed by a sam adams and nowfeel completely sick.

i was in north beach too today, i must have missed this out.

i will check out this sausalito i think

tomorrow i think i will, initially at least, concentrate efforts the other side of market st

the street people thing isnt because i am worried or scared, they arent very scary really, you just stride past. its more that its been allowed to happen where so many people can fall off the edge of the system and just be left like moving detritus. perhaps it is the concentration that is bringing it home here though,

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i have been outed:(

i meant to say its like the nebraska of pictyre books. well, actually i meant to say like the oklahoma city that was on tv after the timothy mcveigh carbomb.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly Oakland is a very strange place. I would like to see more footage of Oakland in the 1960s/70s like in Sun Ra's "Space Is The Place", where it just looks a wasteland. I like it though (if that isn't obvious).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oakland heavily alternates between the really uppity and the really frightening. My last experience was in downtown Oakland, and it's not that all scary there, just kinda desolate and eerie for first timers.

Earlier that weekend, I stayed at a friend's place near MLK and 39th. st. (at an address 666, haha), and I was told later that's pretty much Oaktown gang central. Yet, I am still alive.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

MLK and 39th. st.

AKM can verify, but that is definitely not a great part of town, especially late at night. We actually live right off of MLK in Berkeley, and I often have to drive through that part and swerve and brake to avoid hitting all of the people (crackheads or just morons?) who just wander straight out into the middle of the road. I now work on 40th several blocks west of there (more Emeryville than Oakland).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Once you've been everywhere, you can compare everywhere to everywhere else. It will be like Oroborous.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Compare Martin Luther King Boulevards in EVERY American city! Also make Chris Rock jokes!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, Morrissey's American accent is almost as good yours. Har har.

You don't get dead bodies out here in Berkeley every day,

you do if you dig around behind my apartment. Oh shit I shouldn't have said anything!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 7 May 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I hop you get a chance to go through at least part of Golden Gate Park today; if we're meeting you on Haight, it's right there. As mentioned earlier, the Japanese Tea GArden is really peaceful and nice. You do definitely have to get out to the Sutro Baths as well; I'd say breakfast at the Cliff House but it closed last week for renovations.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 7 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, see you all at ameoba on haight at 4pm!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 7 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

just curious, upthread, the picture of the guy on the roof - does anyone know if that was at 4th/harrison, the building across from whole foods perhaps?

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it was across from JaX0n's house, see here:

There's a guy outside my window who's been threatening to jump all night!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, maybe it's best if you called me on the number I gave you if you need anything. I tried your cellphone, but I think my calling card is messed up, as it often seems to be. I'll try you again before heading out.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i thought that must have been the case. i drove right by that scene on my way to work.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i am going out to park chow for a lunch date right now and then i'll be basically heading back to my house on foot (ie, through the upper haight). i will probably be at giant robot or amoeba around 3-4pm. gareth i'll mail you my # like woah.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to eat food and ponder my soon to be unemployed status. I'll be at Amoeba around 4 as well.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my soon to be unemployed status

oh no! (or is it "oh yes!"?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It's oh whatever.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what type of work do you do alex? there are some job openings over here where i work. and, not that you'd (or anyone else) want it, but one of them happens to be my job. i'm finally getting out of here in july.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

where do you work? (not asking for myself, asking for my wife).

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

here's the job openings:
http://www.babycenter.com/about/jobindex.html

there are also some contractor positions open in the customer service department and i believe there's an opening for a contract hr person. i'd have to verify that though.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

alex, hopefully you've saved enough money to have some fun in the meantime.. Unemployment can (for a short time) be a great opportunity. Or not. I hope it's the former case for you.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hey that's where i buy all my babies!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

except for the ones I get at romanianadoptionwarehouse.com

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a bunch of money saved up, will get at worst three weeks severence pay, and can collect unemployment for at least six months. Also my rent is relatively cheap, my girlfriend is (currently) sympathetic and there is still a possibility that I can still be transfered within my company to another job. That said I am a desktop publisher and there is a very very strong likelihood that any job I am transferred to will be in Banglore, India by this time next month (desktop publishing is currently becoming one of the most commonly outsourced positions in the US.) But I am also glad that my chosen profession is being made obsolete when I am twenty-eight rather than fifty-eight. And I have no doubt I can find work in very short fashion. I did really liked this job (it was easy, relaxed and relatively amusing) but I'm not at all surprised that it is ending (I mentioned the possibility on the Kompakt/Rephlex thread nearly 4 months ago) so it's a basically a big oh well.

(Thanks for the heads up btw, metfigga.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you're welcome. ever thought of starting your own business? do you have the possibility of "taking some clients with you"? maybe you're considering an entire career change though.

the reason i ask is because i'm currently enrolled in a business planning program in sf and it's probably the best career move i've ever made. the course is offered through an organization called the renaissance center - www.rencenter.org.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Look for work in Emeryville! ;)

im out and about, but if anyone fancies a drink tonite call my cell (i may check here again before evening, but cant guarantee it). adaml has my number, not sure who else.

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 9 May 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I would normally have fancied a drink at this point on a Saturday, but it's been a truly long stressful family intensive day and the idea of avoiding my comfy bed (even to share a pint with the charming Gareth) seems incredibly wrong right now. Hope you enjoyed your stay though (and found a drinking bud for the night) and I really enjoyed meeting you.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 9 May 2004 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaach, sorry Gareth. My work went on much later than I thought and I didn't get back until 9ish, by which time I literally just flaked out and fell asleep on the sofa. I only woke up just now.

Still, I had a lot of fun on Friday night. I hope you enjoyed your stay, and whatever it is you ended up doing on Saturday. Hopefully we'll meet again if I can make it back to London sometime later this year. Though of course, the Pint Pot is totally out of the question.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

i would like to be out there right now, instead i am in dull overcast London with a godawful virus, and Alan Shearer got 0 points today after i bought him and made him captain of my FPL team

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

You would like SF, steve.

*hint hint*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i have returned home.

friday was a good night, i enjoyed meeting everyone for sure, and extra thanks to kyle for the cd. purchases at amoeba pre-fap were kept to a stringent minimum, though i did make a return visit on saturday and bought a couple extra things.

across friday and saturday either side of the fap i was mainly in the mission and castro districts, but also back in haight.

i called adam and dan around 830pm on the saturday, but neither were in, though it was actually not a bad thing, because i think i had begun to run out of steam by then, and was in bed for 9pm, with an early flight next day

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 May 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry G, I didn't get your message until way later. I hope you had a good time.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It was great to finally meet Gareth and were I better at and not coming down with a cold, would have tried to show him more of San Francisco. Well, there are always future trips. With any luck we'll be in London again either late this year or early next. Glad you liked the CD, thanks to you as well for the mix.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, did anyone else notice Devandra Banhart (and Joanna Newsom) besides @d@ml and I as we were leaving Amoeba?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, he was playing an instore there at 6:00.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I heard a bemusing story about Dev B. and B3n Ch@sny the other night at ChakiFAP...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

tell it

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

As heard from a non-ILXor who had occasion to know Mr. Ch@sny in Santa Cruz, apparently Mr. Ch@sny is none too fond of Dev B, and that allegedly the latter's trying to sleep with (and/or succeeding in sleeping with) the former's girlfriend is a lot to do with it (as is the avalanche of publicity/attention Dev B has gotten at a comparatively younger age).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

mountain hippies

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think devandra banhart is from some really sterile LA suburb like thousand oaks or westlake village or something... but he always claims otherwise, that's the only gossip i have on him.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

he has a family of three living in his beard. but you didn't hear it from me.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

he looked like a skinny little gypsy. but you didn't hear it from me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Devendra, not Gareth.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 10 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a thumbring.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate pictures of myself. Maybe I do actually look like a stoned farmboy 24-7.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's a strange picture of all of us (except for the two people whose faces you can't see.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it is rather. the one of you looks nothing like you at all. sadly the other pic from the other place didnt come out at all, so this is all i have

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That kind of looks like Sean. The photogenic bastard.

Of course, gygax is in the bathroom at the moment that picture was taken. He'll be pissed off at me for pointing that out.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The other revelation from the Gareth FAP - At least one of the dudes in Amoeba knows Alex in SF BY SIGHT.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha that's not the best pic of John Stockton.

I'm there TWICE a week, @d@m! The guy in the Reggae section hates me though (actually I think he hates everyone.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the guy in the reggae section loves me. he always holds stuff in the back for me and tells me to buy it and if i don't like it, or only sort of like it, burn the cd and return it for 75% credit.

i know many amoeba employees by name. i hate me

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 15 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ps, i don't know where else to post this, but Hollertronix are gonna be at Milk on the 21rst and i will be there.

the end

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 15 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"the guy in the reggae section loves me"

My conversations with the guy in Reggae section:

Me: (shuffling through various artists/sections.)
Guy: (working nearby moving shelves, etc.) Do you need anything in particular?
Me: No, I'm just browsing.
Guy: Grunt.
Me: (continue browsing.)
Guy: (clearly about to burst a blood vessel from the SHEER frustration of having to work around SOMEONE actually SHOPPING near him) Well I'm working on this section right now, okay. So this is essentially closed.
Me: (decides getting into an argument with this guy is not worth it) Okay, don't let me interrupt you with my shopping. Bye.

I actually only know two current Amoeba employees by name and one I used to work with at another record shop.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you, so it isn't just me that gets a really bad vibe from certain buyers at Amoeba.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 16 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Well this guy isn't a buyer. He "maintains" the reggae section. Most of the buyers seem kind of exasperated, but most buyers everywhere seem frustrated (which isn't surprising given the amount of bullshit they have to deal with.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 16 May 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I only remembered today that Gareth gave me a CD, and lo, there it was at the bottom of my bag. It's great! And teutonic!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 May 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So I have a flight credit that I'm thinking of using for June 11-June 14. I was thinking of going to San Francisco. Is this a good idea? Where could I stay for cheap? How do I get around? Help me.

Mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a good idea?

YES- the weather will be amazing and everybody will be happy.

Where could I stay for cheap?

NOT the Green Tortoise. How about the Grant Plaza in Chinatown?

How do I get around?

MUNI. Or best of all, walking.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

YES- the weather will be amazing and everybody will be happy.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, how long have you lived here again?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost a year. I'll be right, you'll see.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I am actually in LA for a couple of weekends in June.

Are you looking forward to your birthday, gygax?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

no-one is happy in June. June is Unhappiness Month.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Last year it was Junuary.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I seem to remember a heatwave last June. That was great.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of going to San Francisco, but wandering around alone doesn't sound like fun. I dunno what I'm gunna do with this flight cred.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you could stay very still in one place.

the transportation around SF isn't that bad. It's not NYC but it's not LA either.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It's both!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

June = June Gloom.

The heat wave was late June last year. My father was in town and we went to a baseball game.

My birthday was in February, @d@ml, on the 30th.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

are you looking forward to next year's birthday?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ps: i am a gemini too! weeeeeee!

-- gygax! (gygax0...), April 14th, 2004.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You, my friend, are an incorrigible liar.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

is there good shopping in san fran? this is IMPORTANT to me.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you want to buy? Do you like tie dye?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just kidding, but I'm not the best person to answer that question seeing as I still have trouble finding my way around the city.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

where do you live now? this will dictate whether or not there is good shopping. THere's no H&M and the shoes are crap compared to, say, Europe or NYC. But there are good places to shop if you look around (upper Polk st, Hayes Valley)

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Mandee, aren't you from Colorado? Kyle likes to talk about Colorado.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck that shit!`

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

See?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml = :-P

There is definitely shopping to be had in SF as Retail is one of the largest industry sectors in town.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't kyle hate colorado? yes. I am in Denver. We don't have H&M here, either.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

g- Hahaha! I got you!

You even told me the date. I bet you regret that now.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

>:-O

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You totally let your guard down. Let that be a lesson to you. You'd better hope I don't start you a birthday thread.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yes I hate colorado but that's because I lived in Pueblo from 1980 to 1987. I do like the scenery in the rockies. I don't like the republicans or the christian coalition or denver or colorado springs or constant 'satanic cult' stories in the newspapers.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah says Denver had about as many crazy homeless people as SF does.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so you lived in pueblo, and the last time you were in colorado was 1987? these are bad signs. 1) pueblo sucks and 2) colorado in the 80's sucked even more. IT'S GOTTEN SLIGHTLY BETTER. BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY!

Denver has tonzzzz of crazy homeless people.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

isnt nabisco/nitsuh from pueblo, too?

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he and Kyle are BROTHERS!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(in spirit)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure they'd shoot them in Denver if they only could!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yes nabisco lived there the same time I did from what I remember, but I've never talked to him about it. I think he went to a different high school than me. I'm sure we probably know some asshats in common somehow.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It could be worse, Kyle. You could be from Greeley. Like me.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

American towns are so wonderfully named.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i don't even remember where greeley is, but I think I was there once for some reason. is it near grand junction? or more near trinidad or something? or silverwhatsit?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I know - doesn't "Greeley" evoke images of ham frying?

Greeley is up north near Ft. Collins. It's home to millions of cows.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

san francisco is more interesting than greeley.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

duh^avogadro's number!!

wow, I can't believe I just typed that.

mandee, Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

There is plenty of great shopping in SF. It's probably second to only Manhattan for cute boutiques, record shops, vintage clothes shops, random strangeness, etc.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I need to get into the city more.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I suspected that all along, but I could never really afford "shopping" until now.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

second to manhattan as far as US cities go, probably..... but I haven't experienced the certain grandeur of Detroit or Madison Wisconsin, so I can't really say. But yeah, SF's pockets of cool shops are very de-centralized and sectioned off. Which is a good thing because if you're on foot you get to experience more of a feel of the city that way.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

does this mean we get to go shopping with you now @d@m?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah I meant in the US. I'm not sure NYC is better than Paris or London or whatever.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC is definitely the best shopping city I have been to.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

London close second!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of Colorado towns - I'll be in Gunnison, CO this weekend for a bachelor party. Should be a lot of fun - staying in a house on a river there - may do some fly fishing and the like.

Speaking of SF in June - have you guys heard about the free Blackalicious, Antibalas, Broun Felinis concert and is anybody else planning on going? It's part of a Fela Kuti tribute...
http://www.ybae.org/concerts/june_afrobeat.htm

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

did the felinis ever get the rapper dude back that they had in 92/93?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

and speaking of them, I have their first self-released cassette. is it worth anything? can I sell it and pay off my car?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Speaking of SF in June - have you guys heard about the free Blackalicious, Antibalas, Broun Felinis concert and is anybody else planning on going? It's part of a Fela Kuti tribute..."

I'm planning on not going actually, but I would like to see The Black President exhibit before it leaves.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure about the Felinis, don't know much about them.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i have determined that it is not going to pay for my retirement.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i don't reckon. i have a self-released tape of the 12 rods from when they were still in high school and it's probably worth about the same - bupkiss.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's how you spell "bupkiss".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it was something like "bubkes" - you know, kind of Yiddish.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it is spelled "chiklis'

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is actually buptkiss.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that's so funny, i wrote the damn thing three times three different ways before i settled on that spelling

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like it might actually be "bupkis"

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

charlton stepper (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the man who gave me the $400 phone told me, when i asked about santa cruz, that a guy came into his house once, and fucked with his shit, but that he looked into his eyes, and saw him for what he was, and then he fucked with his shit too, because if he was going to fuck with his shit, then why not do it back. they let him go then, and didnt bother him again.

osmondthorpe/kippax (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it wasnt as reassuring as i would have liked

that kippax lad (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

kippax lad - I'm guessing about 7, gygax is meant to pick a bar but he is too anti-semitic to do so.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Re Ulrich Schnauss: I just called the venue. There's no additional performer, other than a DJ afterwards. So I guess it'll just be M83 then.

mikef (mfleming), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so, i went back to my room.the guy tghat gave me the phone is there again. he told me that, he had just sent a message saying suck my cox9 to everyone on his phone, that his girl didnt answer, so he zapped the satellite, just turned the satellite right off, and he didnt even need to go to hillsboro to do it

then he said he wasnt going to go to sleep till he got $10k, because of the danger he'd put himself in, wrists slit, hit with a laser etc, and that he needs that money now

then he said he is this close to taking over, like a conglomerate, but thats no good for plane tickets to milan.

then there was some other stuff about computers and satellites and hillsboro again

i really need a drink now

david acid (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

chahe demian laptop set, apparently, according to the site; it says "opening" laptop set, so does this mean I can still get there at 10 and not miss M83?

Is this the wrong time to say that my friend who saw them in NYC the other night said they were really boring and Schnauss was way better?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

is alex going to come?

i'll be in these environs. i am only going into my room in short bursts, till he says enuogh scary things that i come down here and put them on the computer for a while

david acid (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

whats Hillsboro?

charlton stepper (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if you guys are looking for something to do after the show, i'm going to donnie dorko at 8.30 and then http://www.buzz9sf.com/ afterwards

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

will it be going that late? because we would go to fallout too (our friends will probably be there); I was expecting (dreading, actually) this mezzanine show dragging on until 2:30 or something. Hopefully it will be OVER at midnight.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i went up to my room for a rest, and he was on a new cellphone, talking to someone, giving out lots of phone numbers, then he asked the other person if he was in a moving office, then said, can you do all that if i leave the line on and take a shower, then there was a pause, he said thank you, and threw it hard at the wall, smashing up his new phone, turned to me said, sorry about that, and then went into the shower.

believe me, i really dont mind what i do tonite

charlton stepper (gareth), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yikes. It's like a bad student play.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

where are you guys meeting and when? I may make it before the show if it's in the vicinity.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't do the show, but I can meet up for drinks before most likely.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

someone just name a bar. here is what gygax said:

"Zeitgeist is fine, there are some good dancy bars near
Mezzanine:  Arrow, Club Six, etc.

Across market there's the tenderloin stuff like the
brown jug and what have you.
"

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't ge going to the show. I will either be monosyllabic and miserable or just drink too much. or both. Forgive me.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrow is fine. Zeitgeist might be crazy busy again.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

OK. Arrow at 7.

Now...where is Arrow?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright 7 it is. See y'all there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, to be in your twenties, work in retail, and passively go to art school - it’s the life. Well, not for me, but it is for the people at the Arrow Bar - an uber-hip dive bar.

Hip dive bar - it’s almost an oxymoron. However, one must first define “hip.” To review the Arrow Bar, I will have to describe the subculture that frequents it so you‘ll understand what, for some, constitutes “hip.” I don’t expect most people to understand what I mean by “sceney scenesters” or “twenty-something pseudo-intellectual artists.” You could get the idea, but both judgments are somewhat vague, and not everyone has been exposed to this “scene” of people.

The aforementioned subculture consists of twenty-something to twenty-something-minded-thirty-somethings that really like independent, or “indie,” stuff. They like music that doesn’t get played on the radio, they pride themselves on knowing obscure bands and films, and their reading list contains fiction writers that “understand” their subculture (e.g. Kerouac, Bukowski, Eggers).

You’ve probably seen one of these kids on the street; maybe you're one of them. The girls wear jeans with high heels and retro fashions. The guys wear impossibly tight pants and t-shirts, possibly with blazers. Both sexes have precision (choppy and unnaturally-dyed) haircuts; both sexes aspire to be Mick Jagger (circa 1965, of course).

At the Arrow Bar, in a part of town I can only describe as “really frickin scary,” these sceney scenesters are all dressed up with no one to go home with - yet. They rub up against each other, order cosmopolitans because Sex and the City left them with the impression that it’s okay to be promiscuous, talk shit loudly in order to win the “most pretentious = cool” award, drink Pabst Blue Ribbon under guise of being ironic, and snort lines in the bathroom like there’s no tomorrow - when they will return to their job at Amoeba or a coffee shop or someplace similar.

“Now Layne," one might ask, “why are you so bitter regarding this subculture? It’s just a bunch of kids having a good time.”

The answer is simple: I find the whole display boring and shallow, and I feel the same way about people who go to Ruby Skye or any other meat markets. It’s just not fun, and it's an unhealthy lifestyle.

But, just in case you’re completely intrigued and this crowd sounds fun, go ahead and be "hip" at the Arrow Bar. There is no reason to go to this bar other than to be immersed in its clique. See an independent band play there (despite the fact that there is no room for a band to play, shows do happen). Talk about your band, name-drop, dance on top of the bar, get sloppy drunk and hook up with a total stranger, see if I care.

Gareth,

How long are you in town? I'm off to grandma's house near Yosemite for the weekend and hence unavailable for the weekend. Hectic whirlwind of a social calendar, ask my valet (poor thing spends whole days in tears), but I'd gladly consume adult beverages with you next week.

Michael White (Hereward), Saturday, 18 September 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be nice to see a fight by the night's end.

Please tell me you did write this before the cab driver almost killed us and that little incident at JaXon's place happened....

M83 were okay for anyone wondering, but they played over prerecorded synth tracks and I don't really know why since it did nothing but detract. Surely there is some french person who could have played that stuff live. I guess that's what seeing Depeche Mode was like though.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Please tell me you did write this before the cab driver almost killed us and that little incident at JaXon's place happened....

i actually wrote this during all of the above was occuring, yay for cell phone internet!

M83 were much different setup than I expected (where are the Rolands?) and as Kyle says a lot of the great synth textures were DAT'd on top of their 2 guitar, bass and live drum/drum machine combo. At times they were just flat-out rocking in a Mogwai style. I yelled out "So much... Rock!?!" at one point in a pretty funny (to me) accent. I larfed. There little improvised composition at the end came out pretty limp and fell flat. The DJ's were playing some pretty icy minimal house after the show.

Also, I got my Led Zep fix for the next year or so. Big Star rules too btw.

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

We are having brunch at 1 somewhere on Valencia, but I can't remember the name.

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

let's have brunch at boogaloos on Valencia and 22nd at 1:00 PM, unless someone has a better idea (the guys who used to work at boogaloo's opened somewhere else nearby but I don't know the name, it is allegedly less crowded, anyone know what it is?)

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a good time last night. i thought m83 were pretty good, even if it all seemed pre-recorded. to be honest they were like a 3rd rate shoegazey band, but, you know, i like that well enough! it was good to get out and let off a little steam. i apologize to everyone for my drunkenness online when back in the hostel, i didnt want to go into the room because the weird guy was still up. today, he isnt in the room, though his bag is still there

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Boogaloos is really good, but it is going to be freakin' crazy tomorrow (it always is on weekends, but it will be ESPECIALLY crazy cuz of the Valencia St fair tomorrow.) Brunch sounds good though (we were gonna bike down to the fair anyway actually.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 18 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So everywhere around there is gonna be crazy? What is this fair all about then?

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Crazy in this case just = busy = long wait to get seated and eat.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 18 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ah shit I didn't know about that fair. it might be a lost cause, because there's usually a 20 minutes wait for a table anyway. any other suggestions? I have practice from 10 until roughtly 12:30 in bayview so I'm for for pretty much anywhere.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe we should just go anyway. 20 minutes isn't so bad, is it?

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

If you say so!

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I do.

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

From Flavorpill:

FAIR
Valencia Street Fair

when: Sun 9.19 (10am-6pm)
where: Valencia St btw 21st and 22nd Sts (415.240.6384)
price: FREE

Now that those chilly summer months are behind us and the real San Francisco summer is in full swing, it's time to step out, catch a few fleeting rays, and get that SoCal tan that we've been so enviously eyeing. Fortunately, the Valencia Street Fair provides just the right mix of people, food, art, music, and culture for a frolic in the Mission. On top of sampling the area's numerous merchants' wares, check out musical highlights the Monolith, Ride the Blinds, DJ Soulsalaam, and the Avengers' Penelope Houston. And anti-gentrificationists take heart: the festival is sponsored by community-minded, grassroots-oriented organizations like Rainbow Grocery and Centro Latino de San Francisco. (KT)
