I've gound myself finding it easier and easier to do this. I dob't know when it happerned but I've never been trained to do it, but as yoy csn see my touch typing isn't so vad is it?

So here we go, try typing without looking at the keyboard and keep tour mistakes intact... i.e. no delete kety.

When I first started to use computers (when I was ickle) I thought every keyboard was personalised for me, cos they had the little marks on the f and j keys, which are my initials.

but the other way round.

I have been learning to touch type for quite some time now so this should be not bad at all...let's check now.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I always type without looking at the keyboard. I couldn't touch type till i was about 22 - one day i noticed i was typing and not looking and there's been no stopping me since.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think that's called showboating)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I never look at the keyboard. And you are supposed to put your fingers on teh F and J keys - they usually have little pujmps on them.

I tried this with my eyes closed. Now I will try some punctiuation! Maybe? "Shellow".

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to be terrible at touch typing, and spent hours on things like Mavis Beacon, but they were pretty useless. It wasn't until I started using the internet that I learnt how to touch type, in order to keep up with conversations in chatrooms.

..Solution to the problem, let kids use chatrooms at school.. oh. maybe not.

I'm actually going to show all of you up (except for maybe a few) and not even look at the screen whilst I type this post up. I am currently watching "The Screen Savers" while I type this out, which is interesting because it's a computer show and I'm actually using the computer while paying attention to Patrick Norton and company.

(Been typing without looking at the keyboard for almost ten years now. Can even do the numbers -- look? "867-5309" -- hey, Jenny's number!)

Those Beautiful Lines (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I never, ever, ever look at the keyboard when I type. Often I'm not even looking at the monitor. I scare friends and coworkers with this.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Every so often I look at the keyboard but not really. It's just something I've learned to do automatically. Handy that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(been touch-typin since age 6, yo)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I try to learn youch typing I sod it up.

If you type the sloippy way, but do it enough p[i.e. 10+ years] you find yourself no longer looking at the keynoatd. I do tend to do a lot of bakspacingf though.

What's your typing speed? Mine's around 100wpm I think.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

this is def something ui've never been bverty good at not to mewntion myt compulsiobn to keep loookibnf down at the keyboard

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Andrew... I don't ever look at the keyboard when I type, and a lot of the time at work I'm actually reading something in one window while I type in another. For example, right now I am "listening" to my girlfriend on instant messenger while typing this.

I do look at the screen when I type numbers, but I was trained to do that simply because a typo on a number is often potentially way more dangerous than a typo with letters. I mean, everybody knows what you mean if you type "teh" instead of "the," but if you accidentally typed $900 when you meant to type $800, somebody could wind up pissed.

Oh, and I do this around 80-90 wpm with almost no mistakes... ever.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, aren't you just pquecious. :)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Heheheheh. And bored at work today...

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The backspace key is my friend, BTW. I don't look down @ the keyboard at all, unless my right or left hand is off by one, and I end up typing something like "sp,emtjejomg;lso;k".

You know, for kids.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only type thirty words pet minute. I am not good with numbers on the keyboard,

Have you noticed.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This is fun.

Well, sort of....

Aja (aja), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

let me see if i can even pretend to do this correctly hey i can i am doing it the only problem is that i have no idea where the punctuation is on this keyboard and it's really hard to find the shift key when you are typing this fast i don't understand how people do this i think i will stop now.....

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja (aja), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Some keyboards have th e bumps on the d and k , though, which is hell. Next thread: "draw an album cover in MS Paint without looking at your mouse heheh

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wow, OleM, thanks for bringing to my attention the bumps that I've now noted are on my keyboard. I didn't even really notice the little bumps on the f & j keys! Wow, so I don't even need to look at the keyboard long enough to place my index fingers in the proper positions! Yay!

Ha, so this post has truly been typed out without even looking once at the keyboard. This is the coolest thing; whomever decided to put these little bumps here is a wonderful individual. In fact, I'm going to have to see if I can type out a whole post with my eyes closed, as I've been doing with this sentence here.

(Ha, thank God no one's in the same room I'm in right now. ;) )

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what the problem is. Why you people can't type perfectly normally without looking at the keyboard is beyond me.

(OK, my speling may be a different story, but it's not through lackof knowing where the keys are.)

Kissing Time At The Pleasure Unit (kate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I mean, working with dyslexics in a "sticking them in a biofeedback machine and treating them" sense.

I do work with idiots, but that's another story. ;-)

(sorry, I had to look at the keyboard to find the smiley)

woah this is blowing my mind a bit, I've never even considered that some opeople don't need to look at the screen OR the keyboards. I 'm sitting typuing with my eyes closed and I feel like stevie wonder. Right, let's see how that went.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You lot need my piano teacher sitting next to you with a ruler, waiting to bash you on the knuckles the minute you look down. I actually prefer looking at the screen anyway - you spot your mistakes immediately (and reach for backspace without looking down too).
