Playoffs are a yawner (read: my team has been eliminated), so let's get to talking offseason.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 24 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ideal Mavs offseason (these are both rumors I've heard, both sound highly unlikely):

Magic get the #1, trade it and Grant Hill for 'Toine. Mavs take Okafor.
Nets trade Kenyon Martin for 'Tawn.

Nash
Finley
Dirk playing SF
Martin
Okafor

Not a bad lineup.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 24 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not bad, especially since next season sees the entire elite Western Conference implode save Minnesota and Dallas, which are your two front runners for the conference finals. Back East, Indiana returns to the conference finals by shoring up its current line-up, and will likely meet Miami there. If Miami gets themselves a true center, go ahead and put them in the finals, where they would match up quite nicely against either Dallas or Minnesota....

jolly roger, Monday, 24 May 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

someone take our (bulls) draft pick.. please. and eddy curry's fat ass while you're at it.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 24 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

If Miami gets themselves a true center go ahead and put them in the finals

This is said about 10 or 15 teams every year.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 24 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha like TRUE CENTERS even exist anymore.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 May 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

XPOST

That's wrong. They've been written off completely since they lost Mourning, especially this year. There was no talk of finals by anyone this year until Indiana started showering them with respect. Even at the start of that series, every columnist and sportscaster save Kenny Smith said "sweep". I'm just saying that if Dwayne Wade shows up better next year than this year, they may not even need a center. And I'm not even from Miami, I'm just calling it how it is, because the East has maybe two other teams, both of which are still playing right now. If Dwayne Wade continues to develop, he can carry that team to the finals....

But yeah, true centers really aren't around much these days....

jolly roger, Monday, 24 May 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
Houston robbed the Magic blind. Ouch.

Dirk+Walker+junk for Shaq - yea or nay?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The McGrady trade's official? Nice!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what they were saying on the radio, but ESPN.com doesn't confirm.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, re: your Dallas trade - YES YES YES. Shaq / Jamison / Howard / Finley / Nash seems like a nice starting 5. Also: defense.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Marquis Daniels would start over Howard at this point.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

assuming they can re-sign him. I'm mixed on Shaq - four years at 30mln, and one fluke injury makes him Grant Hill (only twice as much money). And Dirk is young, fun, etc.. But it would be mighty fun to watch Shaq and Nash.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Chad Ford just said T-Mac to Houston not a done deal... They have to wait till the Bobcats do their expansion draft tonight to make sure none of the pieces (like Reece Gaines) are picked. Plus they won't announce it till July 15 because of Francis' contract. Plus, other teams have made better offers. BUT McGrady has said that Houston is the only team he'll sign an extension with, so it looks like it'll happen. Crazy. T-Mac, Yao, plus ???

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

can the bobcats bribe houston/orlando, like "this here's a hold-up. u gimme $3mln cash or we gonna pick cuttino mobley."

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Milo - yeah, I don't know the particulars re: Daniels vs. Howard, but I think the fun-&-done style the Mavs have played w/ their current unit is played out. What're Shaq's trouble spots - his foot? his back? Also, using the Grant Hill thing as a comparison point is specious, as GH's ankle troubles were a total fluke, IIRC.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

His weight + other issues (though if the dude is fighting for a trade, spec. to D-town, I bet he works his ass off). And yeah, a major injury would be a fluke, but they aren't unknown, and when you've got a dead guy taking up 60% of the cap, you're el-screwed-o.

Dallas fans don't seem to excited, I suspect because of this reason and Dirk-love. The team was so bad for so long, fans are torn between "yay, win a championship by putting it all on the line" vs. "play it safe, just don't go back to 9-72 even if you never win a championship"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

can the bobcats bribe houston/orlando, like "this here's a hold-up. u gimme $3mln cash or we gonna pick cuttino mobley."

Exactly.

Also, using the Grant Hill thing as a comparison point is specious, as GH's ankle troubles were a total fluke, IIRC.

You know, the Magic didn't want to give Hill a physical before he signed that ginormous contract because they thought it would "offend him" and scare him off. The injury happened when he was in the playoffs the last year with the Pistons and didn't want to be thought of as soft. Tragedy upon tragedy.

I think Howard would start over Daniels just because of the positions they play. Daniels is great coming off the bench.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

They didn't give Hill a physical? Oh man... That's inexcusable.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Crazy huh?

So, the Bobcats are now Larry Baxter, J.R. Bremer, Primoz Brezec, Maurice Carter, Predrag Drobnjak, Desmond Ferguson, Marcus Fizer, Richie Frahm, Brandon Hunter, Jason Kapono, Zaza Pachulia, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Jamal Sampson, Tamar Slay, Theron Smith, Jeff Trepagnier, Gerald Wallace, Jahidi White and Loren Woods.

I'm a big basketball fan, and have heard of maybe 6 or 7 of these.

NBATV is showing the 1986 NBA Draft. Kind of sad knowing that Len Bias is about to get picked.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Brad Daugherty just went #1! Cavs doing some major rebuilding trading for the top pick. He looks kind of soft to me though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, ABBA two-play on VH1 Classic.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy crap, they cut back from some stupid Bobcats press conference just in time to show just-drafted Kenny Walker do his Rodney Dangerfield impression.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

francis is already crying about going to orlando, apparently he may be shipped to seattle. the highest a player has averaged under van gundy is 19.4, mcgrady is gonna be crying by the end of november and van gundy will probably be gone before christmas.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If Van Gundy can get McGrady to play Van Gundy style ball (and don't forget, T-Mac said Houston was the only team he'd resign with).... Houston could be very interesting.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

howcome nobody is talking about the kobe bryant lakers implosion?

again, i am hilarious.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lakers would be such a clusterfuck if the Mavs deal went down. Kobe+'Toine+Dirk, with Fisher (?) at the point and no center (maybe Cuban would throw in Shawn Bradley!). Like the Mavericks last year, only without the good young guys and Nash.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Kobe will surely sign a contract early - how does that work if he gets convicted? Is it still two years of no play before the contract comes off the salary cap, or are there felony provisions that would let a team off the hook?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if anyone will sign Kobe prior to a conviction, if only to save themselves the trouble of having to deal with any potential salary cap dead weight. If there ARE provisions, however, where a team signing Kobe can take an exemption to alleviate cap pressure, THEN you'll see owners (interested in KB) chasing after him with contracts and new fountain pens and ties flapping in the wind.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Every contract has an out if a player is convicted of a felony... so it's no lose. If say the Clippers sign him and then he gets convicted, they're off the hook and can go into the next off season with tons of cap room. Or, he's theirs.

I think it's a forgone conclusion that he resigns with the Lakers though. Most money, and stupid Buss and Kupchak are giving him the keys to the proverbial minivan. Still not convinced that Shaq is really a goner though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

shaq is totally a goner, unless laker management is seriously inept and can't rig up a decent trade. shaq was modestly zen all season and rarely (if ever) went in for the bickering with kobe of previous seasons, and they still couldn't make it work. which means shaq asking for a trade- he's serious.

and i definitely agree with milo upthread that shaq would work his ass off in a new city. on the right team he really could go on another championship run or two, which ought to be enough incentive to drop a few pounds and bang. the legendary big men (kareem et al) were able to be effective long past the age where shaq is being called old (32?!) and i think he's serious about getting a new city, new teammates and going to work.

.rob (rgeary), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So it looks like the hot talk now is Shaq to ... the Clippers? Does that rumor make sense to anyone? Certainly Jerry Buss wouldn't want the big man playing in the same division, in the same conference and the same building. And if Kobe+Toine+Dirk looks bad, how bad would Kobe+Quentin Richardson+Corey Magette+Elton Brand be? I shudder.

Heard some talk on the radio this morning that Derek Fisher might be headed to the Rockets now with Payton staying in L.A.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean SHAQ + Q + Brand + Magette, right? Who the hell's at the point for the Clips?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I guess either Shaq OR Kobe could end up with that crew, depending on how any trade went down. We might do well to wonder not just how's at the point for the Clips, but who the hell is in the front office?

So anyone think that the McGrady trade could fall apart if Francis keeps karping? It doesn't seem to me like Francis has an awful lot of leverage here, but stranger things have been known to happen in the NBA. Maybe Orlando trades for Francis et al, keeps Mobley, drafts Okafor and tries to spin Francis somewhere else on draft day? Orlando seems dead set on somehow landing Shawn Marion, so who knows? But as it is I think Francis probably ends up in a Magic uniform next season.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's happening.... Jamison got traded to the Wizards for the #5 pick.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1827125

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm coming to grips with losing Dirk, but trading away Nash would be insanity. Nash has been the key to the team for the last two or three seasons - when he's out or hurting, they suffer so badly. Who's going to replace him? Are there a bunch of All-Star point guards out there for the midlevel exception?

The Jamison trade would make more sense if the Shaq deal was a definite impossibility. As long as O'Neal's taking up most of your cap space, you might as well keep a good player with a big contract on the books, since flexibility isn't an issue at all.

(What on Earth would convince Don Nelson to draft a really tall, skinny white dude? Hasn't Shawn Bradley taught him anything?)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No! Don't get Stackhouse and Laettner! And why didn't they get rid of Walker instead of Jamison?
OTOH, one of those tall high school kids would be great (but not Pavel, please Cuban not Pavel)

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

'Toine's much better trade-bait because of his contract. 'Tawn still has a number of years left on a max contract.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, as long as Walker is out of Dallas next season, I'm happy.

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What the Mavs really need is a new coach. Can we get Riley?

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I never realized how stupid most people/sports fans are until I listened to the last three days of sports talk radio. Jesus Christ. "Well, why won't they take Finley and Jamison and a first-rounder for Shaq?!?! That's a good deal!!!" Also the "Well, if Shaq couldn't win with Kobe, how's he going to win with... Nash, Finley, Jamison, Daniels and Howard" (when the rumors were Dirk/Walker for Shaq) people. Argh.

Someone on the ESPN Mavericks board just floated a Walker/Stackhouse/5 for JERMAINE O'NEAL trade. WTF? Yeah, man, a couple of overrated, overpaid guys and a bad draft pick for Larry Bird's franchise player.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Booo. I like Don Nelson. Any other coach in the league wouldn't have done as well at small-ball as he did at the end of last year. (And I don't know how much of the player woes you can blame on him, and how much on Cuban/Donnie Jr. - I suspect he wasn't first in line to mess with the Big Three chemistry)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe Dallas fans would turn on Nelson (as they have, at times) - I mean, does anyone even remember the ten years before Nelly and Cuban arrived?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Don Nelson too, but I think they'd win more if they, y'know, played some defense. Original idea, right?
xp

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You've got to have players to play defense. Without a strong defensive big guy, what options did they have? Danny Fortson got written off after he broke the arm of that kid from Phoenix.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Nelson's bruise-a-Bruce Bowen tactic last year was my favorite coaching gambit ever (and it worked, too!). But I don't think he'll ever win a championship.

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The draft is starting!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa Howard went #1!!!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Can Dick Vitale make a point OTHER THAN he loves his beloved college kids? (Baby)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Devin Harris to the Mavs .... another chip in the Shaq deal falling into place?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.... Say hello to the Mavs new starting PG (so sez David Aldridge).

Steve Nash in a Lakers uni?? Weird.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Vitale in slobbering-over-Luol-Deng shockah

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(Baby)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man. Raptors just blew it.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Bill Simmons does his draft journal again this year.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

DAMMIT VITALE! Stop comparing players to the Pistons.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Stephen A Smith arguing with Vitale.... God help us.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Mullin is trippin'.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno how I'd feel about

Harris
Finley
Howard/Daniels (assuming one or both don't go to LA)
Dirk
Shaq

If you're going for Shaq and a championship, having a rookie PG is a mighty big risk. Part of me suspects Harris is trade-bait for the Lakers, if they're going to lose Fisher.

Poor Pavel blahblahblah - two days of "he's going number 5!" talk now he's looking at the mid-teens.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Dallas-Washington trade is official.

That footage of the high school player that the Sonics took. It seriously looked like he was playing against 7th graders.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

CASH CONSIDERATIONS?

They had to pay money (in addition to Jamison) to get Harris and two overpaid chumps?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Portland took Telfair? Doesn't he have some attitude issues (plus not being great, according to the analysts)? Didn't they just spend a year shipping out attitude problems?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Cuban care?

Wow, Telfair is a REACH at 13.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hold on now there boys
portland has d. stoudamire,
telfair's just learning

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess it just sounds insane - Washington was getting a good deal anyway, and they wanted money on top?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

plus Harris will play
the hell out of the point for
the Mavericks.
word.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I have to cancel my appt. for a Steve Nash tattoo. Fuck.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess it just sounds insane - Washington was getting a good deal anyway, and they wanted money on top?

Probably because of Jamison's crappy contract.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it that much worse than Stackhouse and Laettner, given his production?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

SHUT UP VITALE!!!! SHOVE YOUR 4-YEARS UP YOUR ASS! (Baby)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

NBA analysts need to get off the NCAA's dick. "Oh, players coming out of high school are ruining college basketball!" Good. College basketball needs to be ruined and maybe they'll find a way to stop screwing the players.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Pavel Padkblahblah is crying right now. "But I vas supposed to go FIVE"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i cant wait for the korean to get picked.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I still loved the dig Chad Ford had after last year's draft... that "some analysts" make money off of selling their recruiting/assessment services and they're whining is more about losing out on that than really giving a shit.

I think it's also been proven that these HS or early draftees have a MUCH bigger percentage of becoming impact players than experienced college players. Called "upside."

Stackhouse makes 7-8 mil over the next 3 years, Laettner 6.2 but is a free agent next summer.

Jamison is 12-16 mil till 2008.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

and i wonder what my bulls are going to do with gordon/crawford/chandler/deng.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounded like Paxson was gonna keep 'em.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's also been proven that these HS or early draftees have a MUCH bigger percentage of becoming impact players than experienced college players. Called "upside."

where is this proven?
i want stats and names right now,
or else i say NAY

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

eddy curry, kwame brown, deshawn stevenson, tyson chandler, darius miles, dasagna diop. stars

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

x-posts Maybe it's that they're more likely to become exceptional (KG, Kobe, Dirk might as well have been) but more likely to bust completely too.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(haiku, i was joking.)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dick, the agents and the KIDS MAKING MILLIONS benefit.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Vitale is going to stroke out before the end of the first round.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

so by 'experienced' you meant 'played for all four years'? i didn't understand.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Instead of living off whatever the boosters can slip them while going to BS classes. I really hate Vitale.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ESPN had a rumor up that Harris+Walker+someone were going to Golden State for Dampier. Now it's gone, thank God. That would be really bloody stupid. Dampier doesn't solve your problems. Once he signs his contract, he's back to chumpsville.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

PAVEL BOL

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

meanwhile they just said
that beltran's been traded to
the houston astros

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, no one disagrees that it sucks that all these young players are coming out and not contributing for a number of years. But Vitale is full of shit.

I think the Russian might actually be good. Sloan is a good coach for him.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah and now utah
has another big white guy!
cue mormon rapture!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

With Kirilenko+Pavel, Utah jerseys are going to sell like hotcakes in Eastern Europe.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jameer Nelson to the Magic. Vitale's head will explode since they now have a HS and 4-year player.

Denver and Orlando in draft-day deal shockah! What is this like the fifth year in a row? Or does it just feel like it?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

McGrady for 'Melo and Nelson!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(kidding of course)

I'm beginning to suspect that the only players left on the Mavericks from last year will be Najera, Finley (since no one will take his contract) and Howard.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I would pay all the money I have to see David Stern do standup comedy.

Wha? Shaq maybe to the....... Kings???

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

for who, though? The Lakers wouldn't take C-Webb and his problems, Peeler's gone. Peja+Bobby Jackson (also injury issues)+Brad Miller?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The rumor was just that Shaq was in Las Vegas and said he'd want to go to the Kings. Which might (now that I think bout it) be a HUGE bluff.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened to the Brazilian guy in his mid-20s? ESPN profiled him but then he dropped off the end of the world.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Vitale would rather the kids go to college and make a DIV I school some millions. Lord knows that so many big schools really CARE that you get an edumacation with your hoops.

earlnash, Friday, 25 June 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be happy if even one EPSN talking head would challenge Vitale on that stuff. None of them stick up for the players or criticize college practices.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf, why did the bulls pick duhon?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob freakin Knight has even changed his mind about some of these kids going pro. He is all for trying to separate the college game from the pros and have the NBA develop a true minor league system.

The NBA is really losing out not developing a true AAA system. It would give them a place to rehab players, have players ready to fill in on rosters knowing a teams system if called up for a couple of games and the level of play would probably be as good or perhaps better than NCAA ball. I think they are morans for not giving it a go. They could also use those mid market connections to play preseason games and help build up support for the parent clubs.

earlnash, Friday, 25 June 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

FYI, Kidd left Berkeley after two years.

(Not like he was really there to begin with.)

Also what's this about Mullin?!? I must know every Mully content.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 25 June 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I also think the NFL should get off it's duff and just buy the Arena Football League. It is becoming somewhat popular in some markets and is much closer to home than Barcelona. Europe is NEVER going to get into American football, now they could perhaps turn that Arena league to the next level. I think people are so fanatic about their NFL teams, that they would support the local summer team if it had a tie to the big squad. They are eventually going to lose the court case with the minors, better to have a system where they could work with young players and let them develop and become ready for the big game.

earlnash, Friday, 25 June 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You're on a roll!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 25 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

A minor league basketball system makes soooo much sense.

I was just thinking, though... Why not change the rule that you can't draft a player and let him stay in college? My understanding is that they made the rule after the Celtics drafted Bird and let him stay at Indiana State another year. The thing is, European players can stay in Europe. So, like a Sebastian Telfair... He's going to be guaranteed X number of dollars when he wants to come to the NBA. Let him go to college a year instead of ride the pine.

I guess the downside would be that the draft would be ALL freshmen and HS players... Just a thought though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, of course. The answer is that the NCAA won't allow it:

If the player was still eligible to play in college before he was drafted, the team retains the player's draft rights until the draft the player would have entered had he not left college early.  For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2001, they retain his draft rights until the date of the 2003 draft.  Note that the current NCAA rules state that players lose their NCAA eligibility if they are drafted, so the player could not return or go on to play college ball.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

all the more reason to make the nbdl into a real minor league. i for one would absolutely pay 5-10 bones to go see sebastian telfair demolish other rookies and rehabbing veterans and such.

.rob (rgeary), Friday, 25 June 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"I guess the downside would be that the draft would be ALL freshmen and HS players... Just a thought though"

That isn't how it happens in baseball, there are still quite a few big players taken out of the NCAA and it has become more the case in the last twenty years or so. The thing that the colleges will have for some players is that they can get an education in case the pros don't work out and at big schools will get excellent focused coaching on how to play the game.

Do you think someone like Tayshun Prince would have had a chance to go straight to the pros? Probably not at all, as he was so slight, but four years at playing at a top level school like UK and playing in such a spotlight probably provided a whole lot of experience that he wouldn't have gotten playing minor league hoops. Mateen Cleaves will never be a big player in the pros, but that experience he had at MSU will pay a dividend over a lifetime that no minor league playing experience will ever provide.

I don't think a well put together minor league bball system will hurt college ball at all. People will still care about NC/Duke or college hoop at that level no matter who is in the jerseys.

"Sources said Tuesday that the Rockets and Magic have finalized a deal that sends Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue and Reece Gaines to the Rockets in return for Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato." - Chad Ford EPSN.com

Man. If Shaq stays in the West this is going to be a crazy year.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I really, really want T-Mac to make everyone forget everything about Kobe Bryant except for the fact that he fell apart in the 2004 Finals.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope that playing for Van Gundy helps McGrady turn into the real superstar of the league. I _gotta_ imagine he will.... he pretty much engineered being traded to Houston, so Van Gundy and Yao have to be big pieces. But it'll all be on McGrady. He started acting like a spoiled child last season in Orlando.

Houston in a year or two - once they assemble a few more supporting pieces to the team and Yao and McGrady get on the same page - should be a favorite in the West.

Gonna be an interesting season.

This was pretty funny:

O'Neal, wary of being questioned about his desire to be traded from the Los Angeles Lakers, declined to comment during a break in Monday's meeting.

People who were in the meeting said O'Neal raised his hand twice during a team-by-team roll call, jokingly claiming to represent the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings. He did not raise his hand when the Lakers were called.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it when Shaq called the Lakers fat

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've wound up liking Shaq so much more after the Pistons-Lakers series (where he was clearly the only Laker who was working hard) and how he's ripped into the Lakers.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

In a couple years, Yao's going to be on the Warriors!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaq was great all season. He was by far the best part of the all-star game. But I've hated him for so long it's gona be weird seeing him in a Mavs uniform.

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never cared one way or another about Shaq, but Aaron OTM - after the finals and all the goings-on, Shaq's the man.

I'm coming to grips with the idea of a Nash-less Mavs. If he's really looking for a long-term big/max money deal, given his age and fragility, I dunno if I'd pay it. $10-12mln/yr+ for a guy who Nellie only wants to play 30-32 minutes a game and can run cold is a lot of money.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Chad Ford sez the following are all on the block in addition to Shaq (not that they'll all get traded, but still)...

Kidd
Pierce
Stojakovic
Ray Allen
Marion
Abdur-Rahim
Sczerbiak
Jason Richardson
Jason Terry
Al Harrington
Caron Butler
Matt Harpring
Walker & Stackhouse (duh)
Mashburn
Chandler

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, Caron Butler? Really?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly they're using him as bait for a team to take Eddie Jones' terrible contract.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I'd forgotten all about Eddie Jones -- which I guess speaks to Miami's need to rid themselves of him. He's just disappeared. I'm guessing of Ford's list Harrington and Marion will probably be the most sought after. I can't see Butler or Stojakovic actually moving.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'd be suprised if they both moved as well. Harrington and Marion were part of trade rumors around the draft, which means "they can be had." Or whatevs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard that Portland
wants Ray Allen and would trade
Ratliff or Shareef

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope that playing for Van Gundy helps McGrady turn into the real superstar of the league.

Me too. Van Gundy will make him pass a lot more and play defense a lot harder, two things that McGrady can use in his game. He won't have the go-ahead to shoot everytime he touches the ball and we'll see if he gets used to that. I can't wait.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

So who's going to run the point in Houston? I suspect it's going to end up being Derek Fisher; any other rumors out there?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of Van Gundy, has anyone heard anything about the Knicks? Seems Isiah has been uncomfortably quiet.

So who's going to run the point in Houston? I suspect it's going to end up being Derek Fisher; any other rumors out there?

I don't know, that's a good question. Hell, McGrady could carry the ball down court.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Tyronne Lue will run the point? But yeah... gotta imagine they'll bring someone else in.

Knicks rumor is Stackhouse for Kurt Thomas. Ugh.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

My money is on Eric Snow playing point in Houston, which would be perfect for that team. Houston should fill out their roster with role players who can compliment Yao and McGrady. I'd like to see a starting lineup of: Yao, Howard, Sczerbiak (good shooter, plays hard, finally got humbled in Minnesota), T-Mac, and Snow (doesn't turn the ball over, reads the court well, doesn't look for his own shot). Their bench really blows at the moment (Nachbar never really found his game, Mo Taylor is undersized, Glen Rice is still a pussy), so I don't think this is the year they make the run. I'm hoping that the front office can get creative in surrounding 1-11 with mistake-free players.

Anyway, I'm hella excited about this. The Rockets are literally the only professional sports team I have any loyalty to.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yet another reason to hate LA?!?! Sweet.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Kobe and Shaq probably stay in the west
McGrady's gone to the west
the Hornets move to the west
Denver, Phoenix, the Spurs, the Jazz and the Clippers have all got free-agent money...

Even with the Pistons, Pacers and (maybe) Heat, next year might be even more embarassing for the Eastern Conference.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa whoa whoa

"even more" embarrassing? how was it embarrassing to have the best team in the eastern conference beat the shit out of the lakers in the finals? I mean, the regular season may have indicated one thing, but the post-season proved who the best team in the league was, and it wasn't the lakers, spurs, t'wolves, kings, mavericks or anyone else from the west.

jimmy crackhorn, Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, even more embarassing. The WC had a ~.630 winning percentage against the East. Losing one of their playoff teams and the biggest superstar and maybe more (K-Mart/Kidd for instance) to the West and adding an expansion franchise. Two strong teams doesn't make up for the rest of the JV crew.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Say it ain't so Steeeeeeve!

The Mavs are so screwed if they can't/don't land Shaq now.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the typo on ESPN's front page - "bittersweat" instead of "bittersweet."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright, I'm breaking my "I'm not posting to ILX anymore" (guess it doesn't matter with the imminent shutdown)....

Mavs are going to have a REALLY tough time landing Shaq without giving up Nowitski now that Nash is out of the equation. Ray Allen is on the block and VC wants out of Toronto. And Mike K would be an idiot to take that job in LA... Seriously, since successful college coaches have done SO WELL in the NBA.

Anyway, see y'all in 2 weeks. I figure half the teams in the NBA will look totally different!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 July 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the typo was because nash was so sweaty!

Symplistic (shmuel), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no, my loyalties are all shot to shit. But as a Vancuverite, I guess I'm rooting for Phoenix now. Sorry Milo!

Symplistic (shmuel), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so rooting for the Suns next season.

Barring some major shakeups (always poss with Cuban), the Mavs might be lucky to finish third in the Midwest.

One major upside - it's always entertaining to watch the Dallas media and fans turn on an owner/GM in no time flat.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

if they get shaq, they'll be fine. But nash and shaq would have been an amazing combo.

Symplistic (shmuel), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think so. To get Shaq, they'd have to give up (one way or another) Dirk and Walker. Even if they didn't have to give up Walker, does anyone really want 'Toine on the floor jacking up threes that should be in Shaq's hands?

So you've got

Harris
Daniels
Finley
Laettner?!
Shaq

There's no way that team is better than the Lakers were last year, or McGrady-Yao, Duncan's Spurs, etc. Shaq and one superstar+outside shooter was one thing, Shaq, no superstar and losing most of the outside game? Not pretty.

Plus, if you want Shaq to play, you've got to give him $30mln+ for two more years on top of his current two. If you're unwilling to give a slightly younger, smaller player half of that for cap/financial reasons, that's a mighty big risk.

I'm sure Cuban and the Nelsons know way more about basketball than I ever could, but I don't get what they're doing. The only realistic options (to me) were either to sign Nash, not worry about trouble on the back end of that deal, go hard for Shaq and try to win one or two in the next couple of years, then rebuild. Or, let Nash go, forget about Shaq, and figure out a way to go back into rebuilding mode (ie no championships, no home-court playoffs) right now. But Cuban isn't into delayed gratification.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 2 July 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Teams currently better than the Mavericks:
T-Wolves
Spurs
Rockets
Nuggets (Andre Miller, 'Melo, K-Mart, Nene, Camby? nice team Kiki)
Kings

Teams that could be pretty easily be better than the Mavericks:
Suns
Jazz
Grizzlies

Team that doesn't deserve to better than the Mavericks, but might be:
Lakers

Hello, lottery!

Carlos Boozer going to Utah, C/D?

I wonder what the conversations with Lebron on the Olympic team are going to be like.

Can't wait to see that Nuggest frontcourt next year.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Very excited about the new Rockets and Nuggets. The new Heat will be a big bust though I'm thinking.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Give it up for my Oakland Warriors!

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So the opening-day lineup for the Mavs (as of now) is

Devin Harris
Brokedown Fin
Marquis Daniels (better pray that the end of last season wasn't a fluke)
'Toine
Dirk

with Laettner, Stackhouse, Howard, Bradley Avery Johnson and Najera on the bench. The Tall White Guy doesn't count, he won't see the floor this year.

I hope that pick they traded for Tall White Guy is lottery protected or Devin Harris is the second coming in his rookie year.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Jason Richardson still there? Semi-tall Skinny White Guy (Dunleavy)? And we can't forget contract-year Dampier.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Richardson's still around, as is Dunleavy and Pietrus. Just re-signed Adonal "drafted #7 overall, graduated from Colgate" Foyle. Darko II baby! And Derek Fisher yall!

Dampier's all but gone, simply biding time for the right sign+trade deal to crop up.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did the Warriors give Fisher a 6-year contract?? Boggles my mind.

The Mavs can still trade for Vince Carter and add another underacheiving whiny SF who needs 90 shots a game to be effective.

I love Cuban but his analysis of why the Pistons won the Championship (because they made shots and the Lakers didn't, as if defense or team chemistry had nothing to do with it) shows why the Mavs will continue to be also-rans in this league.

So, Pistons are actually going to be better this year than last - adding Delfino and McDyess (who should be able to give them 20 min a game) plus keeping Rasheed with only giving up Okur who wasn't going anywhere in a Pistons uni. Not really scared of Miami because that team has like 4 players (even though one is Shaq and the other is D Wade) and 1.5 mil to try to sign 8 more. Pacers upgrade with Stephen Jackson who I swear is a totally overrated player. Nets are imploding. Hornets are in the West now. None of the other teams have really improved.... I'm guessing they win 64 next year with the usual "if everyone stays healthy" caveat.

T-Wolves looking mighty nice in the West right now.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did the Warriors give Fisher a 6-year contract??

No one knows for sure except this handsome guy.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

funniest trade scenario I've seen - 'Toine and Laettner for Kidd & 'Zo's contract. So Cuban says no to signing Nash for four or five at $50m - but he'd OK a trade for a (admittedly better) PG for six years, around $100m who just had major knee surgery?

Marc Stein floats some great ones.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

All my hopes for next year are riding on Sam Cassell's hip. His arthritic, moth-eaten hip.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are draft pick signings dragging out so long? The money part is all set by the league, shouldn't the contracts be pretty standard?

Thia ain't your fantasy league, kid! There are lawyers!

I have no idea, actually.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Terry for Walker = equals 6 guards and 1 forward on Dallas = Milo shoots himself (I would too, but I'm rooting for the Suns now)

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Kind of:

I like

Terry
Finley
Daniels
Dirk
Shawn FUCKING Bradley
w/ Josh Howard and Devin Harris off the bench

better than
Harris
Finley
Daniels
'Toine
Dirk
w/ Howard and the Tall White Guy Center Rotation coming off the bench

also, this probably means no trade for Kidd which I see as a franchise-dooming move. Older than Nash, way more money than Nash, bigger injury problems than Nash. Anyone who trades for his 5yrs/90mln without see him play half a season or a full season is nuts.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I marvel at Mullin's ability to get the Mavs to accomodate the Warriors so much and willingly.

What a terrible deal for the Mavericks.

I hope 5 pts and 5 boards for 50gms are worth $10mln a year, Mr. Benefactor!

What's Dampier gonna be like in 2011 when he's 38 and making $13mln?

If he trades away Dirk next, I'll have absolutely no reason to root for the Mavericks. Maybe the Warriors will someday be worth watching.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the combined salaries of the Mavs and Knicks next season is equal to the GNP of Southeast Asia.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not that bad of a deal. They didn't lose any players (tho it would have been a better deal if they had lost Stack) and they desperately need someone big that can rebound. Of course, the money would have been better spent on steve nash. As long as Cuban accepts that he'll be paying 300 billion dollars a year for the next decade, it's a great deal.

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say it was a great deal, if Dampier had a record of being good. But he's injury-prone and lazy. This is the last contract he'll ever sign - what's his incentive?

They've traded away the next three years of first-round picks, maybe more (didn't Washington get a first somewhere along the line?). That's a huge gamble if Dirk goes down or something comparably bad happens.

It was probably smart to go into breakdown and rebuild mode after missing out on Shaq, but this switches that completely.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah there are a lot of reasons to believe he won't play as well as he did as last year. but otoh it's not as if there's tons of great rebounding free agents out there for the mavs to pick up (and overpay).

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just pissed that the Knicks didn't sign Dampier for the mid-level. My hopes are dashed yet again.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - That's why I think they should have waited - see if one of the kids develops, see who else is on the market soon.

If they were getting Dampier to make a run for the next two or three years (when he's definitely going to drop off the face of the Earth) Cuban definitely should have re-signed Nash, he can't claim cap flexibility or anything else was in the way.

But he didn't want to pay luxury tax, etc. Cut back on the personal DVD players and maybe it won't hurt so bad, dude.

The criticism of USA Basketball is borderline racist, is definitely unsophisticated and exposes a lot of super patriots as hypocrites. Allen Iverson is wearing our jersey -- our red, white and blue -- and playing the game the way we taught him to play it

Well, I feel vindicated for the way I've been watching the Olympics, yelling at American Olympians for letting me down PERSONALLY when they fail to attain gold.

But seriously, last I checked the starting 5 of the Pistons were all black, and they played a style which is pretty close to Intl game with it's tough interior defense, ball movement, team play, etc.

Anyway, in my daily "Chad Ford said this and thus it is true".... $1 billion was spent of free agents this summer.... Funny how Cuban argued that 65 million was too much for a 30 year old PG who's had a lot of injuries but 75 million for a 29 year old C who's had even more injuries (and lacks heart) is okay. Dampier will be nice for a couple years but BOY are Mavs fans gunna be angry in 3-4 years when there's a new collective bargaining agreement and he's sitting on the bench resting his sore knees pulling down 20% of the team's salary... and the owners have basically proven exactly why the league needs a salary cap.
