what is wrong with people?

this is a serious question. i spend my life in a near-constant state of frustration and disbelief at how myopic, ill-informed, selfish, inconsiderate and all-round bloody stupid people are. now i know many of you think i'm a miserable bastard anyway and i'm fully aware of ilx's "let's all hold hands and sing kum by yah round the campfire" tendency, but plenty of you spend a lot of time unloading on groups you don't like (the poor, the uneducated etc), so, this is the thread where you stop pretending to be nice and let it all out.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You really are a complete and utter cunt, aren't you Dave?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really mean that. Shit, I'm not very good at this, am I?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a start

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a serious answer. there's nothing wrong with people. it's one of my favourite show tunes. barbra streisand's is the definitive version but the tymes did a good soul cover.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

you just need to work at it

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Every person I have dealt with recently has ignored my requests. Banks, agents etc etc. I have seriously phoned about 10 ppl in the last 3 weeks to arrange stuff or amend details & not one of them has managed to do what I ask. The world is full of incompetents & unfortunately it is making me think why the fupp do I bother with anything.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and i'm fully aware of ilx's "let's all hold hands and sing kum by yah round the campfire" tendency

bwahahahaaaaa, what?

anyway i know what you mean Dave but i sense that your annoyance has once again been provoked by something written on this board and i don't think you should let it get to you like that when it can just be taken as words on a screen (actions annoy more).

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They're too intolerant of other people's failings. God, how I hate people like that.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling anything I add to this thread might be superfluous.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what is wrong with groovin'?
(i love that song tho i can never write or pronounce the name of the woman who sings it - i also laugh when she sings 'what is wrong with wailin?' cos i hear it as 'whalin')

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They shouldn't punch me in the nose for absolutely no reason at all when I am on vacation. Fuck that.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Awareness

Awareness that you are not the only person in the room and that the views and moods and requirements of the others may differ from yours for whatever reason, the only person who needs to get somewhere, the only person who might feel a certain way about a certain someone, the only person 'this' has happened to...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

They shouldn't punch me in the nose for absolutely no reason at all when I am on vacation. Fuck that.

stay outta Riverdale

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's mainly the way the bnp thread descended into another "hey let's laugh at proles" fiasco (the unloading), yet still most people were having a go at calum for being prejudiced (the kum by yah tendency). still, this could just be fun anyway.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, wot's RIGHT with people?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

they are capable of not being coonts

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

people are OK.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Up with people.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, mostly people are OK.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

You beat me to it Liz, are you telepathic or sumthin?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Just a mental-keen Lambchop fan.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz *is* telepathic. Ppl only have to think "I could really do with some cake right now" and she bakes a cake! Amazing!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray for everything. There should be a board about that.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"that" meaning what exactly?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

it's this thing.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

try people more

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

stop being so pedantic. that's one of the things that's wrong with people.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does it matter if other people are myopic, ill-informed, selfish, inconsiderate and all-round bloody stupid?

What if you are myopic, ill-informed, selfish, inconsiderate and all-round bloody stupid? (and people are, so unless you are from some superevolved space race, you are too)

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

do you mean the being pedantic? or the stopping?

xpost

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you wrote that's twice dave (sorry)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have 20-20 vision, thus am not myopic. Ahem.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

like i see A Nairn 'awareness' or lack of is the real problem

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

really liz?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm generous and loving and amazing.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The incompetence thing has been a really problem for me lately. Before I moved, I arranged to have my phone number changed. (I was told I had too, in order to have voice-mail; which probably wasn't even true, since the person I talked to screwed up on every other point.) I was told I could not get a DSL connection in my new apartment, so I signed up for (more expensive, and so far, less satisfactory) cable internet. A few days ago, I received a package from Verizon (my phone company): "Thank you for choosing Verizon DSL as your. . ." etc. I called Verizon to let them know that I had not ordered DSL service, but also that when I originally inquired about it, I had been told it was unavailable in my new location. (I haven't mentioned that my phone service was shut off a month or two before it was scheduled to be, thanks to a mistake the person I talked with must have made while keying in the shut-off date.)

Meanwhile, the cable TV I decided to get (since I was already paying for cable internet) has not been working. I haven't found the time yet to call the cable company about that.

Despite the screw-ups with Verizon, I am thinking of switching to them for DSL, to save money. (If I make them my long-distance carrier, I will save additional money. Goodbye Working Assets. I hardly ever make long-distance calls anyway.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

does your mind's eye have 20-20?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave this thread is sort of ill advised. You've been very sanctimonious since returning here. I realise you were pissed off when you left but still.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, I don't suppose for a moment you thought about sympathising with Rumpy before launching into her for abhorring the people who are making her life a misery BECAUSE OF THE WORDS SHE USED???

Maybe that's what's wrong with people.

You're right about pedantry, though.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i think this thread is okay (so far). there have been too many stupid threads lately. i often revel in stupid posts, but not stupid threads, that's the line.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually this fucks me off all the time, Dave. But HOPEFULLY you know a few good people, and besides even tho I barely post there's clearly a lot of pretty likeable people on ILX, right? They exist! More might be nice (in real life, I mean), but then you'd have to like PHONE them and that sort of shit, that'd get annoying.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid posts kinda rule

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

People I cannot understand :

Huntingdon Labs protesters
People who work at Huntingdon Labs
The BNP
Class fascists (I note one or two around here)

Everyone else is alright

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

What is wrong with "people" that I deal with at the moment is that they don't deliver stuff when they say they are going to, or they send something not quite like the part that they ordered so the object I was going to repair remains unrepaired, and the person who I am supposed to be repairing it for gets pissed off with me, or the big japanese cycle part manufacturer manages to fuck up its stock levels or wtfe, and I wind up getting quoted 190 day lead times on commonplace items wtf.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Huntingdon Labs?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

as this is the tread where you don't have to make any apologies, i'm going to ask you very politely to please stop being such a self-righteous twat, markelby

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

being too loud and never listening is one thing that's wrong with people

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm remeinded of a Depeche Mode song.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"people are people so why should it be/you and i should get along so aw-ful-ly". that one? CLASSIC.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

what is wrong with stevem?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

People are people so why should it be, you and I should get on so awfully

Simple. Because you are a tosser. You can't even work out that you are a tosser. Fits in well with this thread.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

what is wrong with stevem?

he says he'd like to play footie on sunday but never reads the FAKA thread.

i don't like it when things are planned or talked about too much ;) what else is wrong with me, i am intrigued to hear what others may say although i'm not i would like what i find and this may or may not be the right place to ask

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the nice weather we've been having lately, we're not used to it. I've never seen or heard so many cranky people before, me included.

penelope_111, Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't say anything bad abt stevenm and that kind of annoys me

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't listen to dancehall enough

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Since Stevem heard A Grand Don't Come For Free he insists on going "look, she's playing with her hair!" every time I go anywhere near a woman. Will that do?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why you are crap, Dave. Just make something up! (x-post: see even Steve can find something)

Delete the words "anything" and "add to this thread" and you'd be OTM.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

why would anyone ever want to say anything bad about stevem?

I've never listened to dancehall. Does that make me a bad person?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Huntingdon Life Sciences - infamous UK research centre where a lot of animal testing goes on. Ppl who work there have been subject to continuous attack and harrasment (physical violence, attacks on homes etc) by 'Animal Rights' protesters who want to close the place down. e.g http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1494924.stm

What's wrong with people is they need to work and sleep. If they didn't need to, they would have the chance to run a search on every subject on ILX prior to posting to check what ppl had posted about it previously.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, the need to sleep as much as we do is a huge flaw in our design imo

you're a pathetic waste of oxygen. a public school tory pretending to be a liberal. an overgrown bullying prefect who thinks he can tell anybody what to do because you can't in real life. you have no power, no energy, no beauty, no love, no life, no hope. as a human being you are DEAD, DEAD, DEAD. and you haven't even got the guts to say these things out loud, face to face, in an FAP because you know full well what you'd get back.

so go and enjoy the cossetted, unearned life that awaits you. in the meantime i'll fuck off whenever i want, so i suggest that we just go back to ignoring/hating each other. deal?

good god, no not me.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Has there ever been a fight between two people on these boards? I imagine there would be loads of pints knocked over, manly chests to the fore, fat fingers a jutting. That's the girls, obviously.

The boys would consist of girly swipes and specs knocked askew.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You are of course aware of the legendary Brown-Hopkins Gut Fite?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i am hoping that there will be before this thread is done.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Mikey G. I'm becoming too nice for this board.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have only heard this 2nd hand from Lixi, by the way. It was followed by the phrase "and when I woke up there was a MALLETT in the jelly", which makes me think it must have been quite a night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt that was just a highly specialised form of cuddle. No, not *that* highly specialised form of cuddle.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

lets start a cuddle club!

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What stevem said sort of. I like Marcello, I like Mark C. let's call the whole thang orff.

This thread is a crap idea. What was the idea? Was it a Stelfoxian experiment in social engineering (dub mix)?

Hey Dave S, is it true about your hair? Come to a FAP we want to see.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I am responsible for the rumour that Stelfox is actually a shorter version of Ned, with ginger hair.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just noticed someone upthread said there were too many threads about football? C'mon then, you fanny, you want some?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I'm ILB's most frequent poster. What? The quantity vs quality issue? Oh, right, I see.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim OTM, as i pointed out the political atmos at FAPs is practically non-existent as everyone is too busy being jolly nice, engaging in stimulating conversation and having the fun. It's well known that Tim and I despise each other yet we always manage to keep our cool when London ILX shenanigans are afoot.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Though sometimes I laugh and point at his hair while he's not looking. I'm only jealous.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not going until some of the Czech blastcore and pagan culture people show up

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean Marcello doesn't mind you putting your hand up his kilt?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

If the money's right, I'm nay fussy.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

**my hair is longish, actually not that long, really, and a very dark red - actually passes for brown most of the time. want to make something of it? i don't really do FAPs**

Oh lighten up man. I'm a greying old fart. But we can make something of it if you want.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i piss people off more in person, honestly.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If we can cope with SteveM's antics, DS, I'm sure we can cope with yours.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr C i'm not apologising or saying i was kidding but this thread is about not pretending to be nice and not entirely serious either so you should get the gist.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

antics?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, I don't suppose for a moment you thought about sympathising with Rumpy before launching into her for abhorring the people who are making her life a misery BECAUSE OF THE WORDS SHE USED???
Maybe that's what's wrong with people.

2) "it's somebody else's problem"

I don't mean people who have a congenitally low intelligence; I mean people who fly in the face of logic and common sense, and are resolutely and unrelentingly stupid.

i could engage in similar kneejerk hatred of the middle classes but happily i've got better things to do.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Overpriced, past it, European striker? Sounds ideal for Middlesbrough.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Larsson. Middlesbrough's considerably sunnier than Blackburn is it?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, this isn't a football thread. It's about some bloke / bird (I've forgotten his / her name and can't be bothered to check). Everyone seems to hate him / her, so make them feel good about themselves.

C'mon, it's Friday and the sun is shining.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The birds are signing, in nature's own improvised dissonance.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 May 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the trouble with these boards, loads of blokes banging on about football when some poor tosser needs our help.

The Church

darraghmac, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, that tautology works both ways. What is wrong with The Church? people!

Hasn't been the same since it stopped being Ask Chaki.

If they wanted to commandeer a disused board for The Church, I'd have been perfectly happy for it to have been IDME. Sigh.

maybe the failure to answer this question is an answer in itself? i'm just thinking out loud here.

i've never been so insulated (Roberto Spiralli), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

I have given this question a lot of thought. My conclusion is: people are born with intractable design flaws that require endless, clumsy patches and workarounds. Much like MS Windows(tm).

Aimless, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

we should spend more time teaching people to be people, and less time moulding them into socio-economic units. you didn't think i was gonna go there but i did.

what is wrong with that guy is that he eats meat, basically. he's just not as impersonal about it as most.

"It's far from 'loi' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

as a hypocritical non-vegetarian, the wildly contingent morality of Western eating (Western values!!) is something I guess I basically accept. So therefore, wtf this guy.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

what is wrong is that guy apparently marinades his meat alive, with fur on. i've more of a problem with him as a chef than anything else.
