I live in DC--I am roughly savaged by humidity every god damn DAY

95 to 97 in NYC tomorrow, followed by icky storms

I put in an air conditioner yesterday, just in time. My room is bliss.

I put in an ac at the beginning of July, but I took it out a few days later. My apartment (on the first-floor) stays pretty cool. However, I went for a mini bike ride today, nothing strenuous, and when I stopped by the river and took off my helmet, I realized I was dripping with sweat. Hopefully this is the humidity, and not early-onset unhealthiness.

I'm pretty confident that this has been the least pleasant summer I've ever experienced, in terms of conditions outdoors. Even compared to the one Chicago heat-wave summer month I spent in a moldy garden apartment while some white supremacist was driving around the area shooting people. At least that summer the tomatoes were really good and the evenings were pleasant.

New York seems not to have "weather" and just have, like, atmospheric unpleasantness. That seems especially true this summer. It's never nice. There are barely even any pleasantly gray and drizzly days. There are just super-unpleasant days and then tolerable days where at least it's not actively gross out.

It's so gross here. I'm about to head home and I'm dreading having to go down into the subway. :-(

maybe it is just that perspiring is preferable to working my job, but getting to go out and feel sweat trickle from my brow for twenty minutes was nice before. yesterday, when it was humid without even being squinty and sunny and with the buildings being all edward hopperfied, that was unpleasant.

tbh there's been some hot days here in western MA but all in all it's been a relatively cooler summer. humid and rainy for sure but there haven't been many days that are over 90. none over 95 iirc. this past weekend was pretty gorgeous, yesterday was actually a little cool

like i remember last summer had a 3-4 week heatwave that was like 95 everyday. still tho it's absolutely nothing compared to the months-long swamp environment of DC where i had been previously.

I really don't mind heat in itself -- where I grew up it was over 100 half the summer, but dry enough that that was sort of pleasant. I mind the whole ocean-proximity humidity and the way that instead of just raining and getting it over with it'll drizzle grossly for a week, and the way the sky here is rarely ever pleasant or sky-like, and the way there have only been like four days all summer that have mustered up anything approaching a pleasant breeze, and the air's just still and there are humid vaporous clouds of street-level stink that seem to wander around the sidewalks, and when it's hot the sun seems to beat in on you more than I ever felt like it did even when I lived in a high-altitude desert, and sweating doesn't even accomplish anything, due to humidity and no breeze, so you just show up where you're going with your shirt sticking to your back and hotter than ever.

I swear to god no day in Brooklyn has been that bad. Maybe it helps that I travel to work before 9am and not in the hot part of the day?

Yeah, I shouldn't really complain because it hasn't been that bad at all compared to other summers but the subway/walk home were just as bad as I'd anticipated. Think it's supposed to be a bit better the rest of the week.

yeah, L, I walk to work just after noon, so I care more. and maybe I miss the pleasant parts of the evening due to still being at work. but even apart from the rainiest June in apparently decades, I just don't think I've run into enough days lately where I walked outside and thought hey, it's pleasant out.

the only really pleasant time of day is really early morning~~ i was walking home friday morning around 6:30 and it was really nice, not too cool but still warm and idk fresh, i guess? haha the sky was pretty too

there was this day, a couple of days ago, and it was like it was a kind of perfection that could only be fashioned through days of preparation and aftermath. so there had to be two days of thunderstorms before, for the clouds to get it out of their system, to exhaust the rain and also clear the air; then there had to be two days of aftermath, because the sunshine had all been used up. so to make this perfect period which fell roughly between the hours of nine until five, weather had to be bad for like a week. and i worked through it.

Well, I did get sunburnt in England once but only after spending twelve hours outdoors for three days straight.

The first summer I lived in England (2003) there was a ridiculous heatwave and it was nearly 100F for almost a week. I nearly died. I actually took baths with ice cubes in them and slept on the tiled kitchen floor. Since that kind of heat is so unusual air conditioning isn't that common and nearly every shop was sold out of fans. Savages.

lol I remember the fans selling out. The reason a/c is not big over here is not because it's never hot enough, more because we are less into destroying the planet as swiftly and mercilessly as possible as our American brethren.

Britishers, was this year unusually humid or did I just get old or something? I was dying of TOO HOT so often even though the temperatures never got much above 25. (Might just be my office, which lets pretty much no air in ever)

90 deg indoors here. We have AC units in two rooms, but trying to limit them to the evening when I just can't take it anymore. Heat makes me lose my will to live. Actually I would be okay with just a stand-fan directed at my sleeping form but BF is convinced that sleeping in the wake of a fan is a health concern. Europeans, feh!

Wait, what? I've never really head this before. My wife and I sleep with a fan on in the bedroom pretty much every night starting in about May, a good way yo keep the AC costs down overnight.

I agree, Jvc! But it's something about the draft, he thinks it causes more congestive/sinus problems through drying. I appreciate that a lot of European views on medicine are more holistic than ours but I refuse to believe a fan is a bad thing. Right now we have an AC in the bedroom so it's a moot point but I like sleeping under moving air.

i don't like it either! when people have fans on at work i move away because i can feel my mouth getting dry.

even the a/c makes it too windy for sleeping, i just do nothing about the heat except not using blankets

I HATE IT SO MUCH. The liquid air is making BUGS come back into my apartment, I AM UNDER SIEGE AND LOSING. The sight of a palmetto bug deflates my weeks and weeks of back-straining manual labor because I think, why bother? If you're not safe from giant insects that make you want to vomit, who cares if your home is nice or not?

I'm starting to feel a Temple-of-Doom level of freakout coming on just from being STICKY ALL THE TIME.

bit of rain here earlier and it's only 27 out there now - Summer having a pretty normal one so far tbh

the good thing about this weather is being able to wash 3 or 4 loads of laundry and dry it all outside in one day. Bad things: almost passing out attempting to cut the hedges. A drunk idiot has scared off the ice cream van driver, making some dubious accusation that he scraped his car and threatening to drag him out of the van. Before I had the chance to buy an ice cream.

Is there not a giant fucking thunderstorm near any of you? It's all very exciting here.

But on the other hand, I couldn't sleep last night because of the stupid heat. Bloody muggy summer.

here it looked they were coming yesterday and the Met office predicted storms and 60% chance of rain. And it was a total thunderfail and no rain either.

I'm OK with hot weather but it went from low 20s at the end of last week to 32 this weekend.
