As a former resident of Hell's Kitchen, I second the nay.

I just realized I misspelled "stadium" in the thread title. Apologies.

Hell's Kitchen has already lost most of its seedy character thanks to encroaching gentrification, but I'd still like to see it left alone.

By the way, fans of Hell's Kitchen and its lore should really investigate:

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe cities are still willing to contemplate this stuff. The only people who these things ever make sense for are the team owners and the developers. And the public tab always ends up being higher than they say. It's even more baffling in New York -- why does New York feel like it has to impress anyone? What conceivable benefit is there for the people who actually live here (and who will pay for all the infrastructure and shoulder the 30-year debt or whatever)?

(I feel the same way about the stupid Olympic bid. Who wants the fucking Olympics? Who needs the headache? I had friends who were ejected from their apartments in Atlanta in '96 to make way for the athletes' village.)

spittle (spittle), Friday, 11 June 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

nay nay nay nay nay. god, that picture is frightening.

nay also to the nets redevelopment project in brooklyn. actually, i don't find the idea of a nets arena so bad. what i don't understand is why they have to build several blocks of tall, horrible office buildings and new apartments around it while wiping out a perfectly good low-rise residential neighborhood. it may well me a lot more devastating to the neighborhood than a jets stadium would be to manhattan.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 11 June 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

philadelphia recently sprang for TWO new sports complexes -- one for the eagles, the other for the phillies. but both are within walking distance from where the vet was (before they imploded it -- though originally the phillies' new stadium was supposed to be in center city). so while both are rip-offs for the taxpayers, at least neither is really destroying the character of the neighborhood (the vet didn't either, since it was not too far from old JFK stadium).

building up the west side of NYC isn't a bad idea, really. but jets stadium is a bad idea, for logistics and the transportation nightmares it will cause alone.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 11 June 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

from the Encyclopedia of New York, bitches:

Clinton (CL)

Neighborhood Boundaries:
North 59th Street
East 8th Avenue
South 42nd Street
West Hudson River

Notable Features:

An industrial district that by 1850 had slaughterhouses, warehouses, factories, and tenements. The Irish were the largest ethnic group and the area was notorious for gangs. Contains De Witt Clinton park, and also on the edge is the Port Authority bus terminal. Has a location close to Lincoln Center and the Theater District.

Other Features:

Was once referred to as Hell's Kitchen.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

dude alex by no stretch of the imagination is 23rd Street in Hell's Kitchen. It's not called the Hell's Kitchen Hotel.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan extends between 34th and 59th Streets and from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River. The neighborhood was first inhabited in the 17th century when the Dutch arrived in New York, drawn to the West Side's freshwater streams and grassy meadows. They named the area Bloemendael, meaning "Vale of Flowers." In decades to come, Irish and German immigrants would eventually settle in Hell's Kitchen to work at the Hudson River Railroad, which was set up in 1851. Industry in New York was bustling mid-century, and European immigrants took jobs in neighborhood breweries, factories, slaughterhouses, warehouses, brickyards and on the docks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well, whatever, I think we can both agree that nobody except a fucking tourist would refer to it as "Clinton."

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell's Kitchen (Clinton)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The expansive area from West 30th Street to West 59th Street between Seventh Avenue and the Hudson River is known by two names, one historic, one contemporary. While the name Hell's Kitchen comes from this neighborhood's traditional reputation as one of New York's toughest slums, in recent years the area has been renamed Clinton in an attempt to make it more attractive for investment and development. Many long-time residents, unhappy about the wave of change sweeping the neighborhood, cling to the old name. Originally farms and woodland, the area began to change after the construction of rail lines along the Hudson River. As the city grew, it was the location of slaughterhouses, warehouses, lumberyards, factories, and the docks that lined the West Side of Manhattan. Tenements teemed with Irish and other European immigrants and blacks coming up from the south. In later years, Puerto Ricans moved into the neighborhood. Its long-time status as a poor, working class section made it fertile ground for gangs. The most famous, the "Westies", served as enforcers for the Mafia, which controlled much of the neighborhood from the time of Prohibition. Recently, with the television industry based on the West Side and its close proximity to the theaters of Broadway, the neighborhood has become home for hundreds of up-and-coming actors, playwrights, musicians and others in the entertainment industry. Now Ninth Avenue is one of the busiest streets in Manhattan, with shops, bars and restaurants open well into the night. With the revitalization of the Times Square area, and Chelsea's upsurge in value, Hell's Kitchen, or Clinton, has become one of Manhattan's most sought-after neighborhoods.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

unless of course they're procuring certain services on 10th Avenue, that is.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Clinton" is fucking ridiculous. Apart from Real Estate agents, I don't know a single soul who calls the neighborhood "Clinton".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Even many real estate agents don't.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"North Chelsea"

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the Hell's Kitchen going all the way to 30th thing though... Between Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen is that kinda no-man's land of the Garment District which doesn't really seem like it belongs to either of its neighbors.

I'd buy Hell's Kitchen down to about 38th or so, tops.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Garment District? More like the no-man's-land of public housing. Which really makes it no-white-man's-land, to be crass.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard some people swear the Southern border of Hell's Kitchen is as far down as 28th. In any event, I'm not an expert on the subject, but I do believe it involves at least some of the 30s.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have said "Garment District" (with the air quotes). And yeah, I thought Hell's Kitchen went to the top of the 30s. I thought 38th for some reason.

Beats me. When I lived in Manhattan I was on 10th Ave b/t 44th and 45th.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Garment District doesn't go further west than 8th Avenue, unless you count this one sweatshop I know of.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd be suprised--few people realise that glasgow's merchant city actually extends all the way to buchanan street.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd be surprised how few people give a shit.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad idea and the proposal is ugly. Football teams need to the throwback thing like baseball did - make all the stadiums look like Soldier Field.

I dunno, this reminds me of that.

do you think they'll tear down bellevue? i hope so

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Err.....Bellevue's on the East Side, Phil.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

no the bar not the hospital!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. My mistake. I hope not.....Bellevue's great...or at least it was (I don't think I've been since that fabled FAP next door at Siberia).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard there are lots of gays in hells kitchen now

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"now"

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh was it always fagville?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"roughnecks"

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh. curtis martin.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

How are the Jets doing, actually? Like, over the past two seasons or something? I like them, but it's hard to follow over here.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Who could give a damn, honestly? With the exception of one person -- a Russian personal trainer -- I don't know a soul who gives even the slightest roll of a ratfuck about the Jets.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Jets.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

How are they doing, Stence? (I know NOTHING)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea either. When it's not the season, I totally lose track of seasons past and off-season moves and all that crap. More invested in baseball and beating the Lakers right now.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm. "Even the slightest roll of a ratfuck" pretty accurately describes what I give about football regardless of team.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

are you a COMMUNIST? Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the COMMUNIST PARTY?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, so I know TWO people who like the Jets.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

really, I'm shocked that martin, a native Tennesseean, doesn't like football. That's like, I dunno, a Russian who doesn't like vodka or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not really a native Tennessean. I just lived there during most of my formative years.

I was born in Virginia (and lived in Alaska and Arizona before TN).

Thing is, other than soccer, I've never been particularly interested in any sports. (I've never been particularly good at anything but soccer either, which may have a lot to do with it. And I don't think I was even that great a soccer player looking back.)

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say the idea is a big dud.

Up until about last week the Cowboys were discussing building a new stadium in Fair Park (a very financially depressed area with a high crime rate). I'm very glad that the county of Dallas didn't pony up enough money for them to do it. They might become the Arlington Cowboys now.

One big argument for it was that it would "revitalize" the area. Bullshit. That part of town has been a historically black neighborhood for nearly forever and as they expanded the State Fairgrounds (bringing big college games to the cotton bowl, building a huge outdoor concert ampitheater) all it has down is push people further and further away. They are forced to move out of their homes to make way for these projects, their neighborhoods are overrun with traffic it can't handle (and of course these brief visitors never leave places better than when they found it.)

And usually "revitalize" means "gentrify" which raises property values to the point where the orignal inhabitants of the neighborhood can't afford to live there. It's total bullshit (that they expect the taxpayers to pay for on top of that.)

I want to see the Cowboys build their stadium in Highland Park (very ritzy area smack in the middle of Dallas.)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 11 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

asking the public to finance stadiums owned by private organizations = always a dud. there are many economic studies out there that prove that building stadiums adds no discernable positive "revitalization" to a community.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hell's Kitchen" as an historical matter may well have included the 30's, but any contemporary usage would be as martin specifies above (ending at ~38th). The question is how you're using it, or how much of an historical term you think it is.

I have no problem with a stadium replacing disused railyards (right?); the question is what is the collateral impact? And what benefits might it bring? I can easily see it ruining the Ninth Ave in the 40's neighborhood (which I sometimes call Clinton, big surprise), which I really like.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oh gabbneb, we hardly knew thee.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Between Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen is that kinda no-man's land of the Garment District which doesn't really seem like it belongs to either of its neighbors.

the neighborhood is called "the Javits Center" (or, if you prefer, "Sandwich Planet")

Yeah, "Clinton" is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, really, why name part of a city after a guy who was its State Senator, Mayor, Lieutenant Governor, Governor and Senator, not to mention instrumental in the development of its public school system, among many other things?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's more an objection based on the fact that nobody calls it that, gabbneb. Everybody can agree that Dewitt Clinton WAS THE MAN, man.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I know, but maybe they should start. (I like "Hell's Kitchen," too, of course)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I admit the real reason it's called that is so 23-year-old investment bankers don't have to tell their parents they live in "Hell's Kitchen"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I already live in Clinton Hill, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

are there any good vietnamese sandwich joints in hells kitchen?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe when they build the stadium, you can open your own vietnamese sandwich stand on the concessions level or whatever.

I can tell you one person that thinks this idea is FUCKING BRILLIANT (and for his purposes I cannot really disagree at all).

TOMBOT, Friday, 11 June 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil was referring to my post? I was referring to this.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

because then it would be all revenues (for the politicians), no expenses (for the taxpayers), and we can't have that.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it was bad enough when the REPUBLICANS took over the city for a week

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

actually the faux-republican that's taken over the city for the past 4 years has been pretty bad. not to mention the real republican before him, and the one still up in albany these past 9 years.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

But we need to let the world know that New York is a big and vibrant city, and a world-class tourist destination with many tasty restaurants!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

who knew?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

and we need to let 'em know that we're not lily-livered, limp-wristed pinko pansies! new york likes sports too!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

but all the olympics sports are the livy-livered, limp-wristed pinko pansy types! thank god it'll be a football stadium too.

fuck this city. fuck its republicans, fuck its "art installations" with 24/7 police detail, fuck its sports teams. i'm going somewhere where priorities are things like not letting people i know slowly die in subway stations that MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT BE DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO ANOTHER MAJOR SPORTING ARENA AND MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT BE THE SECOND MOST TRAVELLED AND "SECURE" SUBWAY STATION HERE after being robbed.

oh wait that place doesn't exist cos they're all competing with this shithole.

i hope the jets become cursed. bloomberg too but that's not an uncommon sentiment.

i say let the jets win some fucking playoff games, then we will think about building them a stadium. what the hell have they done since, like, the days of joe nameth?!?!

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i thot you meant the guy who got shot in chelsea?!? there were more? goddamn, i'm really sorry.

OK seriously when people who are in charge of major cities start getting all excited about bringing THE OLYMPICS do they not, you know, look at other cities that have been done in by the same scam for the past, what, forty years? MY, ATLANTA, WHAT AN AIRPORT YOU HAVE.

Also I almost went fucking gonzo destroyer in my class tonight when people start chattering about "homeland security" and law enforcement but either the prof saw my hell grimace breaking up or he just decided it was boring and dumb to talk about so he changed the topic at precisely the right moment.

Mr. Kitty thinks this is all a hock of shit too.

i hope the jets become cursed

Y'mean they're not already?

Sorry to hear about your friend, Ally.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem you should buy a house in stratford now so you can make megabucks when the olympics happen there.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Adding to the condolences. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, I don't mean to completely bring down the thread, i was really angry reading this again and decided to make the point.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The olympics are a mess of an idea. By what logic are they even selling this? That for a HUGE amount of money the economy will jump up for like 2 weeks?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well, actually, it probably won't.

i like the idea of the olympics, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The point of the Olympics is to create a new source of jobs independent of Wall Street. For a limited period of time, yes, probably, but potentially closer to 2 years than 2 weeks.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

jobs outside of Wall St already exist. Virtually everyone I know has one.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

n.b. "new source of jobs"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

please, gabbneb, find us some numbers about the increase in "new jobs" that will be furnished by this project, the amount of money the people in these "new jobs" will be making versus the amount of money this project will be costing the city.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying that I believe this is a good idea, let alone advocating it. I am stating what I understand to be the given rationale.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the idea of the olympics, tho.

I like the idea of the olympics too......SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of the olympics, only as long as they encourage the use of steroids.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ok gabbneb, sometimes it's a little hard to tell the difference between "things you actually think" and "when gabbneb is stating the policy line" to be totally honest, i apologize.

that picture of the made up stadium up thread is creeping me out the more i look at it. is it under attack??

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Jean Claude van Damme...no, Nicholas Cage...no, Vin Diesel...no, ICE CUBE TO SAVE THE DAY!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously it is the ugliest stadium i've ever seen and it looks like there's an oncoming fleet plus that helicopter plus all the explosions...wtf. too bad Black Sunday was such a shitty boook or I'd reference it right now!

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah. I was thinking of that but decided to steer clear. What was the sporting event action movie for Cage, Snake Eyes? Thanks De Palma!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, why is that hellicopter in the picture?

x-post
