Echo Park, Silverlake, Los Feliz, Atwater Village
You could try Hollywood but it's sort of shitty around there and too expensive for what it is. the areas above are places where you can find cheap and relatively nice studios, maybe even supercheap houses (I know a girl who lives in a house for 816 a month, a two bedroom house, and another who lives in a 2b house for 700...by themselves...in Echo Park). They're also within decent driving distance of USC, and very close to the best live music venues in L.A., great bars, and generally cool people.

Then I knew I was back in Texas.

In which case, NYC, Chicago etc prove you wrong as those are equally, if not bigger cities, yet do mass transit, non-car well. On the other hand places like TX's Metroplex serve yr point b/c although our population is smaller than all of those cities are sheer geographic spread makes non-car transportation nearly impossible.
I'm not quite sure what I'm getting at other than there are many differnt angles to compare getting around in places like LA vs. nearly anywhere else no matter what the population and you didn't neccesarily need to off-handedly insult Huck to make that point. (which I felt like you did.)
so yeah. whatever.

that's Manhattan on the left and San Francisco on the right, both at the same scale as the L.A. map. The greater metro areas of both of those cities are of course much larger, but it's still a telling comparison of overall scale. Santa Monica to Downtown is roughly equivalent to the entire length of Manhattan (from Battery Park to the Cloisters). My friend takes a bus for that in L.A. but only because it saves money on parking. If he took his car, the time would be halved. Many people commute from the San Fernando Valley or even from Santa Clarita or San Gabriel which would be two or three Manhattan lengths.

But yeah, LA is big and spread out but most areas you'll never have/want to go to. Lots of people get along without cars here. You can take a subway from downtown to Hollywood, and a bus to the beach.

I'd look at Highland Park, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, and *some* areas of Koreatown. Most of these areas have dodgy elements, but there's some really nice subneighborhoods that are still affordable.
My suggestion is to check with USC's campus housing office first and sub-let or just rent a room out from some other students first. The last thing you need when starting grad school is dealing with getting oriented to a new city AND finding a place on top of that. Just grab a room first, get the lay of the land, and then strike out for a better place.
― Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 June 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)
Ned also lives in a nice vaguely upscale apartment complex in Orange County that's near effective 24 hour bus service. This is eons away from the horrible area that surrounds USC.

for me to use public transportion to get to my school, a 15 minute drive on the freeway turns into an hour and half bus to train to bus then walk trip.
when my car isn't working, I just call in.

What I was getting at is that Regina isn't that big a city, size-wise, and there are probably other factors as to why public transportation ain't so hot. I don't think Huck took offense to that, although if he did, I would definitely apologize.
― hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)
SF area - Muni, Bart - and Portland seem to be okay.
― hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)
1. Is it possible to live near USC and not have a car? Well, of course it's possible.2. Is ones quality of life going to be acceptable living in LA without a car? Absolutely not.
― Skottie, Monday, 14 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)
Public transit is okay with me if I'm living locally though it doesn't sound like it's too attractive for long-range local travel, and I'll prob. end up with a bike or summat. The USC website recommends www.housing4students.com but the UI is appreciably overwrought and irritating to use. I'm gonna tentatively try craigslist for rooms (though this netted me a chihuahua-obsessed ex-stripper last time) and try to hit up connections in the area.
Will the purchase of a high-detail street map help me in any way?
― x Jeremy (Atila the Honeybun), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)
Half-on Topic: But I do think that LA and Regina are probably both lousy for public transit for a few of the same reasons. Sure they're not on the same scale, but a city is a city is a city. Take that, Gertrude Stein. That is to say, both Regina and L.A. (and a good number of other cities) are not based on the old European City Model like New York or Montreal are. They are New World settler towns, expansion frontierisms. The great (north) American vastness, examples of Don'tFenceMeInism. So next time you spend an hour and a half on the bus when you could have driven there in 10 minutes, blame Rogers & Hammerstein (or possibly Cole Porter).

I don't know how many people come into Manhattan every day, but only 1 million live there. 8 million is the population of the city as a whole. The metro area is about 22 million, just slightly larger than Texas itself.

Jeremy, I'd go with Elvis' suggestion. Rent a room near USC, within walking distance. It'll be convenient for the first few months, but will eventually force you into getting a car and finding somewhere else to live.

It is extremely leafy and fairly Grosse Pointeish for LA, but this might be down to the era in which it was built. Adam, think the London equivalent is Richmond/Ham/Sheen for poshness or Bedford Park for intent. I also remember that she and her best friend, who had gone to Westridge, lived very near the float parking for the Tournament of Roses parade. Ashley always found horseshit in the road in front of the house every New Year. This will make you a Goth fo' sure.
I had a great-auntie in Altadena but she died ten years ago. San Marino is where the HQ of the John Birch Society is - bleurgh.
