This is a good beer.

I doubt Ben Franklin would approve.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you explain the American obsession with Newky Brown - which no-one drinks over here?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys don't actually like it? IIRC it is supposed to be served cold.... hmmm

I like Newcastle. It's a dark beer that's usually not too expensive.

I heard that Ben Franklin wanted to put jokes into the Declaration of Independence.

*ROGERING GEAR!'S ROOMIE* (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

newky brown is pretty popular in oz too. i think it's popularity is positively correlated with the proliferation of tacky english themed pubs though.

following rigourous taste tests whilst in america, i can assure you that the slop they knock out as dog over there bears NO RESEMBELENCE AT ALL to the delightful beery goodness that is produced over here (although this is particularly odd, as they got appelation controlee for it, so it *has* to be produced in newcastle, maybe it just doesn't travel well)

*ROGERING GEAR!'S ROOMIE* (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Returning to America, he advanced to the forefront of the Patriot cause as a member of the Continental Congress (1775-76). He served on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. (It has been said that he was not chosen to draft the document for fear that he might conceal a joke in it.) He was the eldest signer of the Declaration of Independence, and when he finished signing the document, he joked, "Gentlemen, we must now all hang together, or we shall most assuredly all hang separately." Ironically, while Franklin was working on the Declaration, his son William, a militant Loyalist and the last Royal governor of New Jersey, was being incarcerated in Connecticut. Franklin left the Continental Congress to become president of Pennsylvania's constitutional convention in 1776.

Before you judge Newcastle, have it on tap - it tastes a lot different (richer, for some reason).

Dadaismus wrote:

MARKETING. Same with Beck's and Germany. And probably Stella Artois and Belgium. Stella is waay overrated in my book. Pretty much *any* other Belgian beer I've had is better than Stella. We should have a thread just on Belgian beers...have you guys had the Belgian brew "Bush"? TWELVE PERCENT alcohol. It comes in wee bottles.

Make no apologies for liking Blue Moon (Belgian-style white, made in USA) - I think it's great stuff, pretty decent substitute if you can't get Hoegaarden.

The forementioned Honey Brown *is* indeed a great value (something like $8 for a 12 pack, right?) - and I'd add Pete's Wicked to that "beer bargain" list (but just the Wicked Ale - the other Pete brews don't do much for me).

What happened to Sam Adams Cherry Wheat? Haven't seen it in forever.

Had Rogue's "Brutal Bitter" last night...mmmmmmmmm...Rogue continually impresses me...

Ernest P. (ernestp), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Pilsner Urquell (at least as we get it in the U.S.) is watery. My favorite beer bargain (since I haven't seen OB in years) is Bavaria (which apparently comes from the Netherlands). Anyone who tries to tell me that Bavaria is the Ryan Adams of beer is cordially invited to drink from my ass.

I, too, wonder why Spuyten Duyvil is located nowhere near its namesake. Williamsburg and Greenpoint bars named after bodies of water-related things should be called "Spalding Gray's Corpse" or "Albert Ayler with Cement Shoes On" or something.

I like Mugs, they got a decent veggie burger.

My generic cheap-beer love goes more to Rolling Rock than to Red Stripe though, but that's likely cause I attended college in eastern Pennsylvania.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Stripe, now there's some ass-tasting beer, my fine noblemans Sir Chaki McBeer the III esq. and the Honorable Earl Martin M. XVI. I can't get with that shit at all.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But, sirs, can we agree on Rolling Rock?

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just at that 100 beers on tap Baltimore place last month. I walk in and there's this fancy tap all by itself at the end of the bar. I ask for a pint of whatever it is. The bartender takes a long time to pour it, what with all the head that he keeps on having to dump off. Then he sets it on the bar and says "that'll be $20". My mouth hit the floor and I just stared dumbly back at him. He stares back at me, steel-eyed. I'm just about to say "fuck that, I ain't paying $20 for a goddamn beer" when he says "okay, how bout $5". Fucker.

The house beers there are pretty good. I think the one I had was the golden ale. Magic Hat is pretty tasty, too.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Stella Artois tastes like Budweiser, that's why Americans love it. They don't like beer that tastes too much like beer. Hahahahahahaha, i'm being all snobby. From a marketing angle though, Stella is a work of genius. I would drink rolling rock if i was thirsty.

My all-time fave is probably Saison Dupont though. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

this peasant likes Rolling Rock.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Stripe isn't that good but the bottles are cute so sometimes I'll buy it anyway.

Rolling Rock is for pussies, but it's not bad. I haven't drank it for years, back when I didn't really like the taste of beer. It's very unoffensive.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You can probably get Dogfishhead in Baltimore, right? Those will knock you over blind.

I worked at this store in Philly called the Foodery for awhile and they sold over 300 or 400 kinds of beer. I tried about 100 of them. I got really fat. and drunk. I ended up owing them money at the end of the week. That's where I learned that I didn't like those goopy scotch ales. They gave me blinding headaches. I tried every Belgian worth trying.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The college staple. Now you know.
http://www.oldmilwaukee.com/images/ourbeeraward.jpg

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Thing about Rolling Rock is I like it in spite of it's being a pretty non-committed beer-tasting beer. I can't say the same for most other beers commonly described as "weak," "watered-down," or "for pussies."

Sometimes I like having a beer that's not gonna keep reminding me just how beery it really is.

Also, I can drink like 12 Rolling Rocks before I realize how fast I'm downing them, so there's that advantage too.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Rolling Rock? Probably one of the most inconsistent mass-produced beers I've had. Sometimes it has a strong corn flavor. If you're going for bland and really cheap, just get Natural Light or Schaefer's (wait, do they make Schaefer's anymore?). A friend of mine went to the Anheuser Busch tour in St. Louis and asked about the existence of "Natural" (if you have Natural Light, then surely its predecessor was Natural...yes?) - I don't remember what they told him.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

In my youth, I drank Blatz, Old German, Meister Brau, and Iron City. 2 16-oz six-packs a nite usually. I was smelly.

I realize that Pabst is the butt of all trucker hat jokes now, but it IS better than Bud and Bud's ilk. I would buy it sometimes when I didn't want something heavy or expensive.

I could talk about beer forever.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben Franklin's autobiography gives quite a different view of beer. In Chapter 5 our hero 'drinks Water only, and is yet stronger than such of his Companions as drink Beer -- Enacts several wholesome Laws among his fellow Workmen -- Ingenious Dissertation on the folly of swallowing Strong Beer...':

'My companion at the press drank every day a pint before breakfast, a pint at breakfast with his bread and cheese, a pint between breakfast and dinner, a pint at dinner, a pint in the afternoon about six o'clock, and another when he had done his day's work. I thought it a detestable custom; but it was necessary, he suppos'd, to drink strong beer, that he might be strong to labor. I endeavored to convince him that the bodily strength afforded by beer could only be in proportion to the grain or flour of the barley dissolved in the water of which it was made; that there was more flour in a pennyworth of bread; and therefore, if he would eat that with a pint of water, it would give him more strength than a quart of beer. He drank on, however, and had four or five shillings to pay out of his wages every Saturday night for that muddling liquor; an expense I was free from. And thus these poor devils keep themselves always under.'

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

But you won't be drunk! That stuff has like .000001% alc.

But I like the fact that I can drink that much of it without falling over. It's good for when I don't want to be very drunk, but I want to drink without nursing one vodka tonic the whole damn night.

Now, if I wanted to get hammered on cheap stuff I'd be drinking Mickeys.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

in spring 2005 the DOG won't be brewed in Newcastle any more, it'll all come from Dunston, Gateshead.. the company has a European protection that gives it the sole right to produce a "Newcastle Brown Ale" but the company's applied to have that removed so that they themselves can use the name once they move to Gateshead

which would mean that one of Newcastle's microbreweries could come out with a beer called "Newcastle Brown Ale" and say, truly, that they are the only Newcastle brewer making brown ale

Home is more like cans of Pabst, Bud Ice and Gennesee.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

my uncle gets the gout like mad. He also drinks Budweiser like it is water.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever's $2

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

so at the Asylum, that would mean almost anything domestic on draft before 9pm. Incl. Shiner Bock.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer's answer is better.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

IAN YOU HAD SO MUCH PBR @ HOME!!

Alex, Yuengling is a rising star

0r4l R0b3rt5 (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

PBR ALL GONE.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been in expensive-town too long, it's ridiculous that $20 wouldn't be able to get me wasted!!

dude if beer is proof of god's love and benevolence then what the hell does CHAMPAGNE BEER prove??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yuengling is a rising star

I guess this must be regional. When I lived in PA, you could throw a handful of rocks and 90% of them would hit people drinking Yuengling. That was 10 years ago.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the champagne beer so much. I am all about the framboise lambic.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

proof that God is a monk who likes Hello Kitty

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Gordon S. Wood to thread.

I like Newcastle. In college, I got made fun of for drinking lambics (I also got made fun of for advocating 'fresh berries' though). I don't go there anymore. But I don't really drink much anyway.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you calling what I'm drinking twee, Tracer? I will fuck you up properly.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No I'm calling YOU twee.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

lambec is totally for girls, ally

chaki_burger (chaki), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ps guiness doesnt get me very drunk

chaki_burger (chaki), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what would be twee? That concoction I wanted to make of bubble tea + boooze. That would be twee drinking.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

vodka + bubble tea + a stephen merrit solo album + cosby sweater = tweeness to the nth

x Jeremy (Atila the Honeybun), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa you've somehow changed my delicious money making idea into something from the depths of hell.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I had some kind of evil iced-tea-beer thing in SF a few weeks ago. It was vommy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I drank a lot of Yuengling while out in MD, which was dumb cause I grew to love it and now can only have a long distance relationship with it.

"OK YOURE AT A BAR YOU ONLY HAVE 20 AND YOU WANT TO GET FUCKED UP. WHAT DO YOU PICK?"

If you're at a bar where there aren't at least two easy answers to that question, you're at the wrong bar. And if your goal is to get fucked up and you choose beer, you haver failed both as a beer drinker and as a lush.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to drink LOTS of Newcastle Brown Ale. It is indeed a good beer.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I get myself a fuckin' Moonshine and two pints of Mountain Goat.

Mike Stuchbery, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Newcastle is great .. no nasty aftertaste.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That Black Sheep Ale is filthy - I couldn't even drink it.

Old Speckled Hen, especially on tap, is lovely, as is Leffe Blonde - both are available in my sainsburys, which'll do me. There's also some special Hoegaarden on sale, which is very good indeed.

As for lagers, avoid Grolsch, drink Singha. I also prefer Heineken out of the big five corporate lagers.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Old Speckled Hen on tap always tastes kind of stodge and musty to me.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, maybe I've been lucky with taps. There's also the fact that I'll often start a session with a Hen, then move onto inferior, weaker/cheaper beers, so it gets the benefit of being both the gorgeous first taste, and the highest quality of the evening.

There's a premium bottled version called Hen's Tooth which is very nice too.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

College....Bud, Mickeys, Heffenreffer, Schlitz 40's, Schaeffer, Naragansett, Natty Light.

Now...Wachusett Country Ale, Wachusett Summer Breeze, Harpoon UFO. I support my local breweries like there is no tomorrow.

I went to a bachelor party on the cape this past weekend and drank nothing but Miller High Life and Pabst. I've been shitting for four days.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I got pretty drunk last night. 1 can Yuengling before dinner + chianti with dinner + 5 pints or so of Newkie Brown = FEELIN' FINE!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're at a bar where there aren't at least two easy answers to that question, you're at the wrong bar. And if your goal is to get fucked up and you choose beer, you have failed both as a beer drinker and as a lush.

I understand the second sentence!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was out at a shitty club last night! They had $1 Stella Artois (16 oz!!!!)

This beer has one of the most tantalizing and complex hop profiles (aroma- and flavor-wise) of any US beer you can find. It's exquisite.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My beer diet is like 50% (at least) wheat beers right now, though, with Victory Whirlwind being a newly discovered fave.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I either didn't drink enough or drank too much beer last night, as I couldn't get to sleep 'til like 4:30 am. Also baring partial responsibility for my insomnia: Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra (who are TEH AWESOME live), belly dancers who know my name but I don't know their's, Gamecube.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This is probably the best beer I've ever had. The taste reminds me of buttery toast or a muffin.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG oops, Anderson Valley makes some of the sickest, most awesome beers in the country -- try their ESB and their Amber Ale! They make miracles, no lie.

I just polished off a bottle of Kastell brown ale (a deliciously malty and sweet Belgian) -- at 11% alcohol, I'm given to a bit of hyperbole right now. Forgive meh!

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

There's only one store anywhere near me where I even have a chance of finding any Anderson Valley beer but next time I'm there I'll definitely keep an eye out for it.

Has anyone ever had Sam Adams Triple Bock? 17. something% alc!
