Australians: What is the nature of your country's relationship with the USA?

Message Bookmarked

And the nature of *their* relationship with *you*, so to speak...

This isn't btw specifically about Iraq or Bush or anything like that. It's a broader query, but I don't want to define the parameters of the question, so if you want to focus on that or anything else that's fine

trappist monkey, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

We're drenched in US culture, but then everyone is really.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and our Prime Minister is brown-nosing Bush something fierce, despite 98% of Australia not actually wanting him to.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the percentage really that high though? Cos it aint in Britain.

trappist monkey, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a pretty sound consensus that Howard should back off a bit. Probably not 98% though; I'm sure the number of conservative rednecks is closer to 20%.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, so you're in Britain?

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the nation is smothered in american "reality" tv shows. i hate them. but obviously a lot of our population likes them or i suppose they wouldn't air them on the telly.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post Yes. Up late :- )

trappist monkey, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah :)

Yeah, we get heaps of those too. Some good, some awful.

Btw, I don't have a problem with US television. What concerns me is the chance that we'll lose a lot of local content [hence jobs] to more US traffic. Recently our nutbag leader signed a free trade agreement with the US.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

By reality shows do you mean Joe Millionaire and Average Joe? Because those shows were sick yet entertaining as hell.

Homosexual II, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep.

We were supposed to get The Joe Schmo Show this year, but it appears to have vanished without a trace. 'Reality' shows are dying a serious death here.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that's exactly what i mean. i didn't find them entertaining so much as reminiscent of fingernails scraping down a blackboard. but i am a grumpy bitch, most of my mates loved them.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

are they mr almanac? yay finally. so please say australian reality shows are dying too??? e.g. big brother etc.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Brother's charging along this year, but everything else is suffering horribly, to wit:

- Popstars Live
- The Block
- My Restaurant Rules [picked up at the end but]
- 239857923487934 dating shows

The networks kind of don't know what to do now. Here's a tip: MAKE PROPER SHOWS.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

my only must-see telly at the moment is (sadly) repeats of north square and black books. it is a very sad state of affairs.

So am I. 'Confidence' isn't a word that springs to mind.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My relationship with the US is chiefly a relationship with specific Americans. I like Americans, and always have. I am not a typical Australian except insofar as I like to digress. And drink.

Americans have the following relationship to me: they sleep on my couch when touring; swap CDs with me; or become friendsters with my gf.

Sorry, I'm on topic. And sober.

I have not come across an Australian (or a NZer) who I did not think was a supremely cool human being. I love their humor and the fact that they seem so down-to-earth. In my mind, they are similar to blue-collar Westerners, what with their colorful language and gentle ribbing. I believe I even started a thread extolling their and their contry's virtues.
(this post is an elaborate attempt to ingratiate myself in case I ever can afford to actually travel to AU)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a blue-collar Westerner?

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they have gentle ribbing apparently

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe i wondered that too.... does it mean we all have to wear stetsons and work in a factory?

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

But also, a soft underbelly.

You can have our couch of course, oops.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost don't shatter my world! you all wear Stetsons, say the phrase "that dingo ate my baby" at least once a week, and cow-tipping is your favorite hobby. ( i was mostly referring to your relaxed nature and propensity to use humor in any situation. whether this has any basis in reality, i do not know)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

psssst oops we call stetsons akubras. and of course we all wear them! i find sometimes they get in the way though when passing through low doorways. and mum makes me take it off at the dinner table too, then i have hat hair which isn't that pretty.

Janne Karlsson, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

do you actually want the specific knife brandished by mick/hoges himself? because if not, i feel certain you could buy a similar one from any kitchen provedore. if you do want that exact one, i'm not sure what to suggest. ebay?

An interesting manifestation of the US-Australia free trade agreement is a brand new US-sponsored train line, that runs from Glen Waverley to Endeavour Hills via Rowville. Trains are already running on this line, even though the line hasn't yet been built. So, in effect, the trains are SIGNIFICANTLY DERAILED.

(I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and) Whittle Away My Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the word I was struggling to find (as I'm apt to do) when comparing y'all to Westerners was unpretentiousness.

y'all say "bloke"? isn't there a male equivalent to 'sheila'? (please don't tell me you don't always refer to women as 'sheilas')

the nation is smothered in american "reality" tv shows.

Hey, we're not the ones who have "Big Brother" on five nights a week.

And I can't believe that "Deal or No Deal" is so popular Down There. Americans, I'm talking about a show where people open suitcases for half an hour. That's it.

It's on network television. Someone's watching it.

I'm surprised that Australia and the U.S. don't buddy-up more. C'mon, America! They don't speak French and you don't have to tip!

(I am slathering it on a bit here. Don't take me too seriously. I'd sure hate for Canada to get upset. Who knows what would happen if that occurred?)

xxposts, Almanac -- I always lol'd at my parents going on about Asian invasion, there wasn't an Asian within 100 miles of our wee country town. And yeah, Dad and his friends would go on about the Italians ...I remember that pretty well. I guess I just meant, 'who could complain about Franco, his commericals are so happy and cool sounding.' But if all you think is 'arrglebargleberloodywogs' then there's no helping ppl.

A Chris & Marie advert just fell out of one of the papers. Would you believe. I took a photo but don't know how to upload from here.

IN BEDDING WITH MADONNA!!! (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

Grrrl: That was a hideous dark time obv, but what's awesome is that those 'invaders' had kids and added depth to our culture and Australia is approx. 5755327696854 times more enjoyable as a direct result.

It's like how these days the people who most hate on asylum seekers are people in western sydney who blame them for traffic congestion.

I have an Uncle who I love to death except that he's a racist POS when you get him going. When I went to Uni, he would corner me and ask me how many Asians were in my lectures and could I get a word in edgeways and were they making me speak Mandarin in my classes and all this weird shit; or he'd go on at me about the Jews taking over Melbourne and oh my god it was the worst. Same guy who used to pick me up and whirl me around by my feet and give me airplane rides when I was a kid. Ah, blood relatives.

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and the bloody shouting matches I had with Mum about flippin Pauline Hanson and her bit. "She's got a point" my fat ass she does. Or the other favorite, aaaaaaall the Aborigines getting $$ benefits and rorting the system and blah blah blah all that from a part of the country that HAS no Aboriginal community to speak of why bc they were shot. Ooof.

Ahh twitpic yes, soon then.

The racist bogans actually think govts' lack of infrastructure planning & expenditure is in fact the fault of ~7,000 refugees in boats annually. I mean fucking seriously. These are cities of 4+ million, use yr branes you thick cunce.

IN BEDDING WITH MADONNA!!! (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

Also if they are not Ab or TSI then they are also immigrants.

IN BEDDING WITH MADONNA!!! (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

Meanwhile the actual indigenous people are battling a 20-yr life expectancy gap b/n themselves and the whining pricks in western Sydney. Aaagh I could go on.

MADONNA, BABY...WHAT ARE YOU DOING??

Pro Bono Impersonator (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 18 November 2010 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah there was also a special on 4 Corners or something like that during the election campaign that quizzed all these people in marginal labor seats in Western Sydney and they all said their number one issue was too many asylum seekers making everything too crowded and busy in their area.

?????

This was in seats with incredibly low intakes of even regular refugees let alone asylum seekers.

You're not in Noble Park you f***s.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:52 (fifteen years ago)

They just assume everyone with a darky face and funny headgear is a boat reffo. The idjits.

Sunn O))) Sundae Smile (Trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:53 (fifteen years ago)

Also it's really bad how the Government just gives asylum seekers all these cars so they can spend all their time driving between Parramatta and Rooty Hill and clogging up the roads.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, driving from slum to slum and making crime because they don't have qualifications or highly-skilled well-paying jobs or anything.
